Championships. That is at 6:30pm. Welcome to The Film Review on BBC | :00:25. | :00:30.
News. Anna Smith joins me to take us through the releases. We have three | :00:30. | :00:35.
quite hotly tipped the -- anticipated releases, there is a | :00:35. | :00:41.
buddy cop comedy with two women, Vicky To starring Sandra Bullock and | :00:41. | :00:51.
:00:51. | :00:52. | ||
Melissa McCarthy. Then there is Only God Forgives, which comes from the | :00:52. | :01:00.
person who brought us Drive, again, starring Ryan Gosling. And then | :01:00. | :01:03.
finally Red 2, Bruce Willis back in the saddle with Helen Mirren and | :01:03. | :01:13.
:01:13. | :01:14. | ||
some other faces in the comedy caper. I noticed that is The Heat | :01:14. | :01:22.
was originally called Untitled Female Buddy Cop Movie. Yes, we have | :01:22. | :01:27.
so rarely seen this! Sandra Bullock is a New York FBI agent, very | :01:27. | :01:31.
buttoned up. Melissa McCarthy is a Boston cop, it is her local home, | :01:31. | :01:35.
she runs around the streets, cleaning them up her own way. They | :01:35. | :01:45.
:01:45. | :01:50. | ||
How long will this take? Maybe 12 others, hopefully less. Wii we could | :01:50. | :01:56.
just beat him with a phone book? Reign for so many reasons, no. It is | :01:56. | :02:01.
crucial that you remain patient. is also crucial that you stop | :02:01. | :02:08.
wearing this stupid hair slide. I have one on top of my head like a | :02:09. | :02:13.
normal person. Just move on. If you enter that room, you could break the | :02:13. | :02:18.
bond that we have created. Do you understand how important this is? | :02:18. | :02:26.
Wii I do. And you will be patient? Wii I will. All right. | :02:26. | :02:36.
:02:36. | :02:37. | ||
Hello. Coffee? I drink a little more coffee than I probably should. | :02:37. | :02:43.
I laughed throughout, it is very funny. It is. Melissa McCarthy is | :02:43. | :02:49.
hilarious, she has a great talent for improvisation. You saw that in | :02:49. | :02:54.
Bridesmaids as well, which had the same director, Paul Feig. She is a | :02:54. | :02:56.
wonderful contrast to Sandra Bullock and they work very well together. | :02:56. | :03:01.
The main problem is the plot, which is pretty negligible, it is Scooby | :03:01. | :03:06.
Doo style. The writers do not seem very interested in the story. But | :03:06. | :03:11.
when it is that funny, does it really matter? It probably doesn't. | :03:11. | :03:19.
If you look at the first of the Hangover films, or Bridesmaids, at | :03:19. | :03:25.
least with Bridesmaids, there is a wedding. Bridesmaids is probably | :03:25. | :03:29.
slightly stronger, thematically and emotionally, but this one, like many | :03:29. | :03:33.
buddy movies, they start off hurt -- hate each other then become warmer | :03:33. | :03:39.
towards each other. It is a bit of a cliche, but not with women, I have | :03:39. | :03:45.
never seen that before. We have not been this dynamic much before. We | :03:45. | :03:51.
saw it briefly in the second Miss Congeniality film, but she was | :03:51. | :03:56.
paired with a man. Thereafter idea is such as gender dynamics in the | :03:56. | :04:01.
workplace, which you do not get so much with a buddy comedy film. | :04:01. | :04:10.
I thought that Drive was terrific, Ryan Gosling was terrific and the | :04:10. | :04:19.
direction was terrific. I am looking forward to Only God Forgives. | :04:19. | :04:23.
seems like a very personal project. It is very experimental, I have | :04:23. | :04:28.
nothing against that, I have enjoyed many films such as Enter The Void. | :04:28. | :04:32.
Ryan Gosling is a Bangkok criminal who has two settle a score, he comes | :04:32. | :04:37.
up against a vigilante cop. There is very little dialogue, long swathes | :04:37. | :04:41.
of nothingness, and then suddenly extreme violence. It almost | :04:41. | :04:46.
fetishised as violence. Then perhaps asks for forgiveness. But I could | :04:46. | :04:52.
not forgive the tedium. It is relentless. And the point is you | :04:52. | :04:57.
don't get to know the characters. They are very broad brushstrokes. | :04:57. | :05:05.
There is so little dialogue and Ryan Gosling gives nothing away in his | :05:05. | :05:10.
face, even though he is a great actor. There is an Oedipus complex, | :05:10. | :05:12.
Kristin Scott Thomas is his brassy, blonde, American mother, playing | :05:12. | :05:15.
against type. But this has no humour like David Lynch or Tarantino would | :05:16. | :05:25.
have. It is a bit solemn. Red 2, I bumped into somebody who said, why | :05:25. | :05:32.
did they even make the first film, never mind a sequel? But I thought | :05:32. | :05:37.
the first film was harmless. thought it was harmless, three out | :05:37. | :05:44.
of five. I didn't see why they needed a sequel and apparently you | :05:44. | :05:49.
are making a third. They are reluctantly coming out of | :05:49. | :05:52.
retirement, certainly in the case of Bruce Willis's character, Frank. Not | :05:52. | :06:00.
only is he wrongly implicated in a nuclear plot, but there is a hit out | :06:00. | :06:05.
on him. MI6 has just given me a contract to | :06:05. | :06:10.
kill you. Apparently you are guilty of nuclear terrorism, murder and you | :06:10. | :06:15.
are number one on Interpol 's most wanted. What did you say?Yes. The | :06:15. | :06:22.
money is good, and if I don't do it, somebody else will. Is that Marvin? | :06:22. | :06:30.
! And Sarah? Reign Marvin gave her a gun. Are you being controlling? You | :06:30. | :06:34.
have to take chances in a relationship and be supportive. | :06:34. | :06:41.
just need her to be safe. Just rent Dirty Dancing and tell her you love | :06:41. | :06:47.
her, it is important to enjoy life while you still can. That is a funny | :06:47. | :06:53.
scene, there probably four or five which are very funny, the rest, not | :06:53. | :06:57.
so much. There is a lot of action. There is a breezy, light tone, with | :06:57. | :07:00.
bodies flying everywhere. Mary-Louise Parker is great fun as | :07:00. | :07:06.
his girlfriend, you have John Malcolm, who is great, Anthony | :07:06. | :07:09.
Hopkins really brightens up the screen as a crazy scientist, but it | :07:09. | :07:16.
just spotted. It was not as funny as the first film. I enjoyed the first | :07:16. | :07:26.
:07:26. | :07:26. | ||
film but I did think, this could be Ocean's 11, but it is not quite | :07:26. | :07:30.
sharp enough. It has a great ensemble cast. Helen Mirren is | :07:30. | :07:36.
terrific, but it just doesn't quite carry it off. I would say this is | :07:36. | :07:44.
the same, if not slightly worse. Your Best of the week? I have seen | :07:44. | :07:50.
Wadjda, this amazing Saudi film. first film made solely in the | :07:50. | :07:55.
kingdom, and the first female film in Saudi Arabia. It is about a girl | :07:55. | :08:01.
who simply wants to have a bike, which is very frowned upon. It is | :08:01. | :08:04.
her journey of discovery, coming into adult hood and discovering the | :08:04. | :08:08.
repression in her own world. It is not a thumping feminism, but it is | :08:08. | :08:15.
her own personal search boy quality. I learned more about Saudi | :08:15. | :08:21.
Arabia, the human face of what happens there, you're watching this | :08:21. | :08:26.
film than any newspaper article or documentary. You understand it | :08:26. | :08:32.
through the eyes of a child in the way that Oliver twist tells you | :08:32. | :08:36.
about Charles Dickens' London. one of those lovely slice of life | :08:36. | :08:40.
films where you feel you are immersed in that culture. I agree. | :08:40. | :08:47.
And the men are peripheral, it is what women do to women. And your DVD | :08:47. | :08:53.
is The Paperboy? If You Did Not See This In The Cinema, It Is Really | :08:53. | :09:00.
Worth Seeing On Dvd. If only for novelty value. It is a deep South, | :09:00. | :09:06.
torrid crime thriller about erotic obsession. Nicole Kidman is | :09:06. | :09:10.
transfixed on John Cusack's incarcerated criminal, Zac Efron and | :09:10. | :09:14.
Matthew McConaughey, a great cast. You will talk about it with your | :09:14. | :09:19.
friends, whether or not you agree on it. One review said it was a plain | :09:19. | :09:23. |
