round matches and Saturday night's fight. Now on BBC News, it's time

:00:00.:00:00.

for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to the Film

:00:00.:00:34.

Review. Mark, what have you got? The story of man falling in love

:00:35.:00:40.

with an operating system. And the Lego movie. It has surprised all the

:00:41.:00:49.

critics. Myself included. And, Monuments Men, directed by and

:00:50.:00:56.

starring George Clooney. Who is quite interesting -- Her, but

:00:57.:01:06.

it is difficult to explain to people and take it seriously. The main

:01:07.:01:11.

character is emotionally withdrawn and at the end of a marriage, the

:01:12.:01:17.

divorce all but signed off. He has retreated from personal interaction

:01:18.:01:21.

and starts having an affair with an operating system on his computer,

:01:22.:01:27.

uploaded to help him sort out his office staff and diary. He opts for

:01:28.:01:34.

a female voice and the operating system seems to develop a

:01:35.:01:37.

personality that he becomes infatuated with. Turns out he is not

:01:38.:01:43.

the only one. I have a friend. The absurd thing is

:01:44.:01:50.

she is an operating system. She is totally amazing, smart, does not

:01:51.:01:56.

just see things in black and white. She is helping me explore it. We

:01:57.:02:04.

just bonded. Really quickly. That is weird, right? I am bonding with an

:02:05.:02:12.

operating system. I don't think so. The woman that I have been seeing,

:02:13.:02:19.

Samantha, I didn't tell you, but she is an OS. You are dating one? What

:02:20.:02:30.

is that like? I feel really close. When I talk to her, like she is with

:02:31.:02:35.

me. Are you falling in love with her?

:02:36.:02:41.

It is a smart, well-written script. But a couple of problems. Samantha

:02:42.:02:47.

Murray to and was doing the voice, but in postproduction they changed

:02:48.:02:52.

it to Scarlett Johansson. I wonder if something organic did not get

:02:53.:02:56.

lost in the shift. It is thought-provoking in beautiful to

:02:57.:02:59.

look at. The image is beautiful, beautifully shot. Absolutely

:03:00.:03:04.

gorgeous. Looks fabulous. The story is that the ghost -- the ghost

:03:05.:03:19.

writes. -- he. So his job is to create faux emotion. My problem with

:03:20.:03:34.

the film is that it is oddly emotionally detached. Is that the

:03:35.:03:43.

part of it? I think one of the strong points is that I enjoyed

:03:44.:03:47.

thinking back on it after I had seen it. You do think, what is a

:03:48.:03:53.

relationship? Is it a conversation? But whilst watching, like you, I

:03:54.:03:58.

thought it was a bit emotionally try. -- dry. And it is also about

:03:59.:04:12.

control. Yes, like the gag about an imaginary girlfriend who gets bored

:04:13.:04:21.

and Leeds! -- leaves. It is illegal. It works up here. -- cerebral. It

:04:22.:04:31.

felt a little bit too clever, as opposed to genuinely emotionally

:04:32.:04:35.

engaging. It just needed something more, for me.

:04:36.:04:43.

The Lego movie. We all went into this, thinking, it

:04:44.:04:49.

will be Pokemon the movie. But it looks fantastic. Made by the same

:04:50.:05:01.

people who brought us Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs which I compare

:05:02.:05:07.

to a David Lynch film. It is anarchic, the kids will live it, and

:05:08.:05:14.

the parents will love how smart, sassy, and edgy is the screenplay. I

:05:15.:05:23.

watched it with a bunch of stuff the critics. One of the gags is

:05:24.:05:31.

conformity. There is a song called, everything is awesome. Yet by the

:05:32.:05:36.

time you come out of the movie, you will be singing it, and only in a

:05:37.:05:42.

partly ironic way! I laughed all the way through. Just like Cloudy With A

:05:43.:05:57.

Chance Of Meatballs, plenty for kids and adults, what you want from a

:05:58.:06:04.

family movie. The funny thing is, with the reviews it has had, it is

:06:05.:06:09.

almost respectable for a middle-aged person to go and see. It is fine! I

:06:10.:06:16.

just love Lego! Across the board, everybody loves how funny it is.

:06:17.:06:30.

Monuments Men. Yes, inspired by a true story, so

:06:31.:06:34.

they have taken some liberties with it. A group of art lovers are sent,

:06:35.:06:40.

essentially, into the field of conflict, to protect works of art in

:06:41.:06:44.

danger of being plundered or destroyed by Li Na says. -- by the

:06:45.:06:56.

Nazis. Every single one of these paintings

:06:57.:06:59.

is a masterpiece heading for Germany. The Nazis are on the run

:07:00.:07:06.

but they are taking everything with them. We need to get as close to the

:07:07.:07:12.

front as we can. Preston, you head for Belgium, specifically Ghent.

:07:13.:07:25.

I'll go with Garfield. Now, you and John Claude get as close to Germany

:07:26.:07:32.

as you can. Why don't you take Sam from Newark, and I'll head up to my

:07:33.:07:39.

old stomping ground, Brugge? Looks like we're going to be together,

:07:40.:07:44.

buddy. A great cast.

:07:45.:07:51.

Yes. But a problem inherent with the poster, are they smiling? Are they

:07:52.:08:00.

stony faced, is it a great caper? The film cannot decide if it has got

:08:01.:08:08.

a comedic turn or if it is serious. Characters keep repeating the

:08:09.:08:16.

message, it is one of those movies in which words speak louder than

:08:17.:08:21.

actions. They call it a non-cynical movie. Post to Vietnam, war movies

:08:22.:08:27.

became cynical. But there is a thin line between cynicism and naivete.

:08:28.:08:34.

It is very uncertain and terribly episodic. A lot of individual

:08:35.:08:40.

performances to like, but terribly clunky. It constantly explains to

:08:41.:08:44.

you what is going on, what it means that it is going on, and just in

:08:45.:08:48.

case you missed it, let me explain what is going on again! It is not

:08:49.:08:54.

terrible, it is populist, it means something, but what it was not have

:08:55.:08:59.

is a lightness of touch and the smartness of reviews George Clooney

:09:00.:09:08.

efforts. Good Night Good Luck was terrific. And there was a very

:09:09.:09:15.

important theme, like there is here. Here, it is not so much laid on by a

:09:16.:09:22.

trowel is a great bulldozer. -- as a. Constant explanations for the

:09:23.:09:30.

hard of thinking. And the best of the week is Dallas Buyers Club, the

:09:31.:09:44.

best I have seen of the year. There are Oscar contenders and it is a

:09:45.:09:47.

well-made movie lifted shoulder high by two great actors. They are trying

:09:48.:09:53.

to bring a mainstream audience to a story which you might not

:09:54.:09:57.

automatically think suits. But the fact it is doing well no box office

:09:58.:10:01.

means it is playing a wide audience, and I am glad it is. And your pic on

:10:02.:10:12.

DVD, Blue Jasmine. Kate Lang should still has a very good chance on

:10:13.:10:20.

Oscar night. -- Cate Blanchette. It is not my favourite Woody Allen

:10:21.:10:24.

film. Not because it is not funny enough, it is very dry and wearing,

:10:25.:10:31.

but she is on camera almost all the way through and is fantastic. She

:10:32.:10:36.

does brilliantly. You compare that with her performance in Monuments

:10:37.:10:51.

Men and... A crazy accent. Yes, she is wondering how far she can push

:10:52.:10:55.

the accent before it becomes ironic, and the answer is not very far! But

:10:56.:11:03.

in Blue Jasmine she is terrific, it is a winner. That is all for this

:11:04.:11:09.

week. Thank you for watching and goodbye.
