well. That is all on Sportsday at 6. 30pm with me Olly Foster. Now on BBC

:00:00.:00:00.

News it's time for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to the Film Review

:00:00.:00:22.

on BBC News. To take us through this week's cinema's releases, Mark

:00:23.:00:26.

Kermode. What do we have? A mixed batch we have American Hustle.

:00:27.:00:32.

Already got seven Golden Globe nominations. Leading the awards

:00:33.:00:37.

pack. We have Walking with Dinosaurs, the 3D movie which does

:00:38.:00:43.

what it sayses on the tin. It is in 3D and we walk with dinosaurs. And

:00:44.:00:52.

after nine years, Ron Burgundy is back in Anchorman 2 - the The Legend

:00:53.:00:57.

Continues. A very interesting film based on the

:00:58.:01:15.

scam - the FBI were Attempting to ensneer public officials. They came

:01:16.:01:19.

up with a conman and came up with a plot. What we have in this is the

:01:20.:01:24.

retaling of a story which says, some of what you are about to see, some

:01:25.:01:30.

actually happened. It is interesting that you check out the real story.

:01:31.:01:34.

More is true than perhaps you would expect. We have terrific

:01:35.:01:38.

performances. We have Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and

:01:39.:01:44.

they are all characters who are all pretending in some way or other to

:01:45.:01:49.

be other people. Some are FBI, some wives, some politicians. They are

:01:50.:01:54.

all basically living in a world in which is the face they show to the

:01:55.:01:58.

world and the one in their private lives and they all have extravagant

:01:59.:02:08.

haircuts. Here's a clip. Historically the best perfumes in

:02:09.:02:12.

the world are laced with something... You cannot get enough

:02:13.:02:19.

of that smell! Couldn't get enough! Smell her nails. Sweet and sour.

:02:20.:02:28.

Rotten and delicious. Smells like flowers. You know what it is for me

:02:29.:02:33.

- it is coriander for me. You can't get enough - that is what hooks you.

:02:34.:02:39.

He always comes back for it. I can't get enough!

:02:40.:02:48.

So nice! In five, four, three, two, one...

:02:49.:02:56.

Can me and the man talk about business here?

:02:57.:03:02.

Great hair styles but a great script. When it was submitted to the

:03:03.:03:10.

Golden Globes, it was submitted as a drama. There is debate - is it a

:03:11.:03:15.

comedy or a drama which has comedy overturns. It is a caper movie. It

:03:16.:03:20.

is more dramatic I is wrong just to call it a -- it is wrong just to

:03:21.:03:25.

call it a comedy. You get fantastic performances. Christian Bale doing

:03:26.:03:29.

that thing about immersing himself in a role. There's an opening

:03:30.:03:35.

sequence, in which he's seen applying his wig. It involves glue,

:03:36.:03:40.

a hair appliance. Hair is a big thing all the way through. We see

:03:41.:03:45.

almost every member of the cast in rollers at some point. The question

:03:46.:03:50.

is this - alongside the great performances, Amy Adams is terrific

:03:51.:03:58.

- it owes more to Good Fellas and to Last Days of Disco. It is about the

:03:59.:04:03.

look, all about the clothes. If it is going to be dramatically

:04:04.:04:08.

successful, the question is, is there anything underneath it? On

:04:09.:04:12.

first viewing, it was about surface. What a glittery, what an attractive

:04:13.:04:18.

and enticing surface it was. It is really good fun. I am not sure it

:04:19.:04:29.

has the heart of Is Silver Linings Play Book. It was a broad broadly

:04:30.:04:36.

funny story - it was dealing with heartbreak and tragedy and this is

:04:37.:04:39.

sort of attempting to do the same thing. On a visual level it is

:04:40.:04:42.

extraordinary. On a performance level it is very, very good. I

:04:43.:04:47.

wonder in the end whether it has enough heart and soul. It may be it

:04:48.:04:52.

takes a few viewings to find that. Very much like the lifestyle it

:04:53.:04:55.

portrays, it was great to look at and great to be in the presence of

:04:56.:05:00.

it. I don't know that it lasts much longer than that. Walking dinosaurs

:05:01.:05:05.

- I remember that from the BBC. It was terrific. I don't know if I want

:05:06.:05:14.

to pay to go and see it. It is What we have is very - well rendered 3 D,

:05:15.:05:22.

great big reptiles, but with cute voices. This is a story of a young

:05:23.:05:29.

dinosaur called Patchy. He's not got to be eaten or trampled. He falls in

:05:30.:05:35.

love, has friendships I is very kid-friendly. We have information

:05:36.:05:41.

coming up saying what th is the name of the dinosaur. Behind it all you

:05:42.:05:44.

feel there is some educational remit. It was very good to look at.

:05:45.:05:50.

It is amazing how we have become bla say about the idea of seeing

:05:51.:05:55.

dinosaurs on screen. It looked very good. If you compare it to Moshi

:05:56.:06:01.

Monsters, going out for the children - believe me, if you are a parent

:06:02.:06:05.

and you take your kids to see something - this is a walk in the

:06:06.:06:10.

park. It is not Earth-shattering, but perfectly fine. And Ron

:06:11.:06:14.

Burgundy, he was wonderful, I think. Yes. It was nine years ago. When it

:06:15.:06:24.

was first made took $90 million worldwide. The story is Ron Burgundy

:06:25.:06:29.

is enlisted as one of the anchormen on a 24-hour News Channel. This

:06:30.:06:35.

sounds to him like the most stupid idea that anyone has had... Until he

:06:36.:06:40.

gets there. Well to GNN. Here is Curtis

:06:41.:06:49.

Nightfish and the best in the biz - Jack!

:06:50.:06:53.

Oh, my God! He's absolutely magnificent. I bet his poop smells

:06:54.:06:59.

like sandal wood! Can I help you? What do you mean?

:07:00.:07:05.

You are staring at me. Do you want my autograph? No. He was explaining

:07:06.:07:15.

who you were. I was looking at you. Ha-ro-ha-ro-ro!

:07:16.:07:19.

Is that what I sound like when I talk?

:07:20.:07:24.

You were laughing a lot. I laughed at the first one. I laughed a lot. I

:07:25.:07:30.

know I'll laugh at it. When the first one came out I was not won

:07:31.:07:34.

over by it. I thought it was all right. It was a slow burner. People

:07:35.:07:40.

started to love it on DVD and it become very quotable. They talk

:07:41.:07:45.

about a broad way musical. It was on and off and the stud yes said it --

:07:46.:07:51.

studio said it cost too much. It is about the birth of rolling news. In

:07:52.:07:59.

America, live car chases, silly pet stories and patriotism will outsell

:08:00.:08:02.

anything else. There is a serious outpinning about what has happened

:08:03.:08:06.

to news in the wake of 24-hour rolling news. The problem is, on top

:08:07.:08:11.

of that, the gags are kind of old hat. There is a very ill-judged,

:08:12.:08:15.

interracial thing about Ron not being able to deal with African

:08:16.:08:19.

Americans, which is dragged out. You think it is a little thing, but it

:08:20.:08:24.

carries on. They have a reprise of the street fight from the first - it

:08:25.:08:28.

is bigger, louder and more celebrities in it. When you start to

:08:29.:08:34.

throw celebrity cameos into it, it means you have lost confidence in

:08:35.:08:38.

it. The first - people were not already expecting a whole bunch.

:08:39.:08:42.

When I sat in the preview theatre, there were people expecting to be

:08:43.:08:45.

knocked out by it and they weren't. It is not terrible, by any means. It

:08:46.:08:50.

is very very average. It's not as funny as it needs to be by a long

:08:51.:08:54.

way. The interesting thing is the underpinning, the satirical

:08:55.:08:59.

underpinning about rolling news, about what is happening in America,

:09:00.:09:02.

about entertaining taking over from news - the gags are not funny

:09:03.:09:06.

enough. I do think the sort of take on

:09:07.:09:14.

rolling news and particularly the if it bleeds it leads culture - which

:09:15.:09:20.

in some American T V stations is strong. Car chasesle - it may not be

:09:21.:09:27.

an -- char chases. I was impressed by the thread. It is the old Woody

:09:28.:09:34.

Allen think - insufficient laughter is grounds for divorce.

:09:35.:09:39.

Now back in October, 5 Live's Kermode and asked viewer to make a

:09:40.:09:53.

two-minute short film. A winner has been chosen. We will speak to the

:09:54.:09:56.

winner live in the studio in a moment. Let's look at the winning

:09:57.:09:59.

entry. That was terrific. With us is the

:10:00.:11:56.

winning director. You've got your 5 Live trophy, with I is clearly no

:11:57.:12:00.

expense has been spared to reward you for your efforts. Was that quite

:12:01.:12:06.

tricky to make? It was quite tricky, yes. They are all practical effects.

:12:07.:12:12.

We used string and then we had a hairdryer to blow it around. Yes,

:12:13.:12:18.

various techniques were used. The thing that impressed me is that is

:12:19.:12:23.

two minutes. Shorter is, can be tricky, can't it? It can. The

:12:24.:12:27.

original film was three minutes. My brother, who composed the music as

:12:28.:12:32.

well, kept saying you have to cut it down to under two minutes.

:12:33.:12:35.

Eventually we got there. Were you impressed? I was. The entries

:12:36.:12:40.

overall were good. We had hundreds of entries T two rules were, it had

:12:41.:12:45.

to be two minutes or under. It had to qualify for a U certificate -

:12:46.:12:51.

meaning suitable for all. Nothing likely to harm or offend. We had

:12:52.:12:58.

comedies, we had animation, action movies. What we were looking for was

:12:59.:13:03.

something that surprised us. It is a lovely story. It is well told. The

:13:04.:13:08.

effects that it is done in camera, meaning you are not going for

:13:09.:13:11.

special effects afterwards - you are doing it all there. It was

:13:12.:13:17.

mechanical. I think you yourself have drawn comparisons that that

:13:18.:13:23.

single idea was well executed. It is hard to get right. We were very

:13:24.:13:28.

impressed by the entries and very impressed with the winner. Are you

:13:29.:13:32.

going to do other stuff? I am hoping to become a film maker. I have done

:13:33.:13:38.

some short documentaries. One other very short narrative film. I would

:13:39.:13:43.

like to make films for the cinema if that is possible. You now have an

:13:44.:13:48.

audience. It is quite good. What do you actually do? Do you have a day

:13:49.:13:53.

job? I work part-time for my dad's company. It is kind of like a gap

:13:54.:13:58.

year for me. I hope to go to a film school next year. Which is tricky.

:13:59.:14:03.

It can be difficult to get into. A terrific film. Thank you.

:14:04.:14:08.

And a reminder before we go - you will find more film news on Kermode

:14:09.:14:14.

Uncut. Our thanks to Mark and to Phillip.

:14:15.:14:18.
