Hello. Welcome to the One Show with Alex Jones. And Matt Baker. Today's

:00:23.:00:27.

guest spends so much time on the road that he describes himself as

:00:27.:00:32.

the travelling salesman of comedy. Shall we let him in? Go on then.

:00:32.:00:41.

It's Jimmy Carr! Do you like our tree. If only you could have found

:00:41.:00:50.

Is it? I thought woolies had closed down. But you have connections.

:00:50.:00:57.

you a busy boy. You're often called the hardest working comedian.

:00:57.:01:05.

That's a misnomer. What do we do, an hour a day at most. Being on

:01:05.:01:09.

tour, you constantly travel. Do you get time off? No, I have a job that

:01:09.:01:17.

I love. It's great. You know what you're doing up to Christmas 2013.

:01:18.:01:22.

I have put a gagging order tour on sale. I put in Christmas 2013.

:01:22.:01:27.

That's a lot. Isn't it. People can book now to see you then? Yeah, if

:01:27.:01:34.

they want. Don't feel you have to. Other comedians are available. Go

:01:34.:01:38.

and see someone else. There are lots of funny boys and girls out.

:01:38.:01:43.

There More from Jimmy later. Security systems in new cars are so

:01:43.:01:47.

sophisticated thieves often have to steal the keys to get away with the

:01:47.:01:50.

vehicle. Simon Boazman was surprised to discover where these

:01:50.:02:00.
:02:00.:02:03.

There's nothing more heart breaking than watching your pride and joy

:02:03.:02:07.

being pinched. The way car thieves operate and what they do with your

:02:07.:02:14.

car once they have the keys is changing. Security systems in

:02:14.:02:19.

modern cars are so effective, you're now more likely to come face

:02:19.:02:27.

to face with a thief. In thap year Ken and his daughter were targeted

:02:27.:02:32.

after being followed onto private land. I parked up on the side. I

:02:32.:02:36.

walked back to give her a hand... Leaving the car unlocked? Yeah,

:02:36.:02:41.

with the keys in, and left the engine running. We pulled the gate

:02:41.:02:48.

to and we watched him. My daughter man icked -- panicked. He got in

:02:48.:02:52.

the car. My daughter was at the car as he slammed the door and said,

:02:52.:02:57.

thank you very much and drove O If my daughter had gone round the

:02:57.:03:01.

front of the car to stop him, which she could have done, he'd have run

:03:01.:03:05.

her over. Ken's Range Rover dais peered without trace. He soon had

:03:05.:03:10.

more bad news. Insurance wonts pay up because I left the keys in the

:03:10.:03:15.

car with the engine running, though it's on private ground. I never

:03:15.:03:19.

even thought people would be watching me. How much are you out

:03:19.:03:26.

of pocket? It was two years old when it got stole be, -- stolen.

:03:27.:03:32.

34,000 to 40,000. How does it make you feel? Bit sick really. I've had

:03:32.:03:36.

my money and people can just take it away. Shelley was arriving home

:03:36.:03:41.

to her young children when she was robbed on her doorstep. Before I

:03:41.:03:46.

knew it I was standing here, he was there, had a balaclava on, hood and

:03:46.:03:50.

just said give me your keys and I won't hurt you. Needless to say I

:03:50.:03:55.

gave him my keys. Just like Ken, police believe Shelley had been

:03:55.:04:01.

followed home in her Audi. I went towards the door and he said "Don't

:04:01.:04:06.

call the police yet and I won't hurt you." Initially after, when he

:04:06.:04:10.

drove off, I became hysterical. After her terrifying ordeal.

:04:10.:04:13.

Shelley eventually reached a settlement with her insurance.

:04:13.:04:17.

Shortly after she received an unexpected phone call. I found out

:04:17.:04:21.

where my car was when the insurance company rang to say actually it's

:04:21.:04:28.

been found in South Africa. It was part of a much bigger criminal

:04:28.:04:32.

organisation. So how does a car stolen here end up in South Africa?

:04:32.:04:37.

The answer lies in ports like this, every day thousands of containers

:04:37.:04:42.

leave our shores. There's growing evidence they're being used to ship

:04:42.:04:47.

thousands of stolen cars from the UK every year. That's exactly what

:04:47.:04:51.

happened to Ken and Shelley's vehicles. Both were stolen by the

:04:51.:04:56.

same criminals before being loaded onto containers full of other

:04:56.:05:02.

expensive cars and shipped to Africa. But the investigative team

:05:02.:05:06.

were on their trail. How did you locate all these stolen cars?

:05:06.:05:10.

picked up a container randomly that's was going out of the country.

:05:10.:05:13.

From that, working with the shipping industry, and doing a good

:05:13.:05:17.

paper trail with them, we were able to identify a number of other

:05:17.:05:21.

consignments, we were able to get the containers intercepted in South

:05:21.:05:24.

Africa as soon as they arrived. What kind of value are we talking

:05:25.:05:34.

about, there's 19 cars here? Conservetively these are worth

:05:34.:05:40.

500,000 all together. Among them is one vehicle waiting to be reunited

:05:40.:05:45.

with his owner, the Range Rover Ken bought himself as a retirement

:05:45.:05:50.

present. Good gracious me. That's mine! I reckon that's mine. What's

:05:50.:05:54.

it like seing it again? Brilliant. I never thought I'd see it again.

:05:54.:05:59.

Most of the stolen cars, including Shelley's Audi, will be sold at

:05:59.:06:03.

auction by the insurers hoping to recover some of the money they've

:06:03.:06:06.

already paid out on them. Because Ken never got a pay out, he will

:06:06.:06:12.

get to drive his home. We got it. That's one for us. My daughter says

:06:12.:06:17.

she wants to stick it where it was stolen and take a picture of it and

:06:17.:06:23.

say there we are, we got it back. Indeed. Not the only car ending up

:06:23.:06:29.

in South Africa in the next few days. Classic! I see what you've

:06:29.:06:32.

done there. You are genius. That's a good film. No-one thought that

:06:32.:06:37.

was happening in the end. Five minutes and get the car back.

:06:37.:06:40.

other service can you offer? reason they're going to South

:06:40.:06:44.

Africa is like any good scam it's seen as a high reward and low risk.

:06:44.:06:49.

Because of the way the shipping system works, good gangs can get

:06:49.:06:54.

cars in containers without putting hands on them. If you don't touch

:06:54.:07:01.

the car, getting caught is very small. In Africa it's worth a huge

:07:01.:07:06.

amount of money. It's the weird thing that people don't get

:07:06.:07:14.

arrested for stealing a car is it TOKing?, taking without owner's

:07:14.:07:19.

consent. I know this, and it's your job, come on. Take an interest in

:07:19.:07:22.

this. They've made the technology too good so people break into your

:07:22.:07:26.

house now to get the keys. They've made it worse. Yes. I'd rather

:07:26.:07:31.

leave the keys in the car and have it stolen than have someone attack

:07:31.:07:34.

me in a balaclava. Shall we talk about the weather. On a different

:07:34.:07:38.

note. It's turned freezing. Very cold today. It's not his fault.

:07:38.:07:48.

Well, this is the M74 in Lanarkshire. There's snow in Durham.

:07:48.:07:53.

The institute of advanced motoring have offered tips. There's a link

:07:53.:07:57.

on the website, go there nor further information. Some of the

:07:57.:08:01.

basics is if the police are issuing weather warnings, don't go out.

:08:01.:08:06.

Take advice from the police. Don't use country roads or housing

:08:06.:08:10.

estates, they're far less likely to be gritted. Advanced driving school

:08:10.:08:15.

have said stay at home. Their advice is don't drive? Clear your

:08:15.:08:18.

windows, make sure there's no snow on the cars before you go out and

:08:18.:08:24.

you should be OK. Before you go out, but don't go out. Clear the snow

:08:24.:08:29.

off the car and stay indoors. They always say no essential journeys.

:08:29.:08:35.

Who's just going for a spin? They're all essential. Talking of

:08:35.:08:41.

driving, you have tyre news as well. Just want to clarify the legal

:08:41.:08:47.

limit for tyre tread in the UK is 1.6mm, it comes from a film from a

:08:47.:08:52.

while back. It's acrass three quarters of the central tyre, so

:08:52.:08:56.

you have to check everywhere if you're going to check your tyre.

:08:56.:09:02.

How do you spell circumference. They recommend the 20p test. If the

:09:02.:09:07.

outer rim of a 20p is visible when you drop it into the grooves of

:09:07.:09:11.

tyre they advise it might be an idea to get new tyres. If you can

:09:11.:09:16.

see the outer rim. Because it's getting wet now, anything with less

:09:16.:09:19.

than 1.6mm on your stopping distance increases. Get your tyres

:09:19.:09:27.

checked. Or ask your dad. Ask your dad or anyone in a HGV. They'll

:09:27.:09:31.

know. All right. They know everything. Everyone's looking for

:09:31.:09:36.

ways to save money. More and more people are using internet vouchers

:09:36.:09:40.

that trigger huge discounts if enough people sign up for a

:09:40.:09:44.

particular offer. One company Group On is being investigated because of

:09:44.:09:49.

claim that's savings are exaggerated.

:09:49.:09:56.

These days from the moment we wake up, there's bargains to be had.

:09:56.:10:01.

There'scy certain David Dickinson once said "It's time to go bargain

:10:01.:10:08.

hunting". 20% off Origami lessons. That should come in handy. Half

:10:08.:10:12.

price golf equipment, bargain. There are literally thousands of

:10:12.:10:20.

discount vouchers available for a range of products and experiences.

:10:20.:10:26.

I wonder if there's one for double glazing? These days, coupons are

:10:26.:10:32.

big business. People are saving 50 billion a year with vouchers and

:10:32.:10:37.

discount codes. How do you find the bargains? Have a look online, look

:10:37.:10:41.

round the shops. Monsoon had vouchers last week. I had a dress

:10:41.:10:47.

for 25% discount. Free Pizza Express, cinema vouchers. I will go

:10:47.:10:51.

to those shop it's they give me a voucher. Someone who can show most

:10:51.:10:55.

of us how to save more than a few pennies is Debbie. Before I go

:10:55.:10:59.

shopping any time, I go and have a look on the internet just to find

:10:59.:11:04.

out what's out there. What are your top tips for saving money? You need

:11:04.:11:07.

to know the price you are paying currently for the things you buy.

:11:07.:11:11.

Because if you don't know what you're currently paying you won't

:11:11.:11:14.

recognise a bargain when you see it. What would you say would be the

:11:14.:11:19.

best bargain so far? Two mattresses, that I have ordered. I'm waiting

:11:19.:11:29.

for them to arrive on Groupon. I paid 300, 150 each. They are

:11:29.:11:34.

telling me I saved 1200 by doing that. 1200, now that is a saving.

:11:34.:11:40.

It was that kind of a bargain that this bakery was looking for when

:11:40.:11:45.

they put a 75% discount voucher online. What we were offering was

:11:45.:11:50.

75% discount from the usual price of 26 down to 6.50. We expected

:11:50.:11:56.

from the advice that we would get probably 250 orders a week and that

:11:56.:12:01.

turned into something like 4,000. They are thinking, this is exciting.

:12:01.:12:05.

This is a fantastic opportunity. 250 a week, we can deal with that.

:12:05.:12:10.

That's based on their discussions with yourselves. Yeah the issue is

:12:10.:12:14.

that I find it unlikely that the sales represent would have said

:12:14.:12:17.

maybe 250-odd. It's difficult to comment because I wasn't in the

:12:17.:12:21.

conversation. What was the impact of this on the business? Everybody

:12:21.:12:26.

here was working ten, 12, 14 hour days. We had to get lots more staff

:12:26.:12:31.

in. We're not a mass production outfit. We're not used to that kind

:12:31.:12:36.

of through put. It was crazy. understand that Groupon offers can

:12:36.:12:39.

put pressure on businesses. The key message from that and the learning

:12:39.:12:45.

for businesses out there is that preparation, we're clear on working

:12:45.:12:50.

out how many vouchers we can sell. We have two key customers, the

:12:50.:12:54.

first of which is the business, the second is the customer. Consumers

:12:54.:12:56.

as well, people who have been taking up the vouchers have been

:12:56.:13:00.

having a bad experience and now the Office of Fair Trading have said

:13:00.:13:04.

you know, some of the stuff you have put out there has been

:13:04.:13:06.

misleading. We're in full compliance with the investigation.

:13:06.:13:10.

We have the same goal. We want customers to get a great offer. We

:13:10.:13:15.

have nothing to hide. We're completely transparent. If --

:13:15.:13:18.

people have a problem, what's the come back? We have a fully

:13:18.:13:23.

functional customer service team. We have the Groupon promise F

:13:23.:13:27.

you're not happy with the offer, we'd like it talk to you. If you're

:13:27.:13:31.

not happy with, it we'll look at giving your money back. It added

:13:31.:13:35.

that it relies on business partners to make the final decision on how

:13:35.:13:42.

big the offer should be and 75% of subscribers would recommend to

:13:42.:13:49.

others. Do you like a bargain? Everyone likes a bargain. It's a

:13:49.:13:55.

bit hunter damage rer, just go into the store and pretend you're on the

:13:55.:13:57.

apprentice. There's hidden cameras everywhere, I need a discount. I

:13:57.:14:04.

was on the Groupon's guy side. It seems like an odd item, you're very

:14:04.:14:10.

much on the consumers friend, that guy was going we gave 75% off cakes.

:14:10.:14:14.

It's the quantity of the offers that's the Irish you. Too many

:14:14.:14:19.

people getting good deals, OK? That sounds bad. Too many people getting

:14:19.:14:26.

a fair deal. Would you sell tickets through those websites? For a live

:14:26.:14:29.

show? I would be weird about that. We never discount tickets. If

:14:29.:14:35.

people pay to see the show, it's the most annoying thing on a flight,

:14:35.:14:41.

if you're at a comedy show, and somebody went I paid 8 for my

:14:41.:14:45.

ticket. You'd be gutted. They all have to pay the same. That seems

:14:45.:14:49.

fair. Let's see you in your seventh DVD, Being Funny. Have we found a

:14:49.:14:53.

clip we can play? Yeah, indeed. really.

:14:53.:14:58.

This is going to be short. Enjoy it. The first few weeks of joining

:14:58.:15:00.

Weight Watchers, you're finding your feet.

:15:00.:15:07.

LAUGHTER Are there any parents in?

:15:07.:15:10.

CHEERING Has been got parents? Had you to

:15:10.:15:17.

think about that, you're an idiot. Parents have got a favourite. If

:15:17.:15:21.

your parents told you they didn't have a favourite, all that means is

:15:21.:15:25.

you weren't it. If you're an only child and your parents went out of

:15:25.:15:28.

their way to tell you they didn't have a favourite, that is bad.

:15:28.:15:33.

APPLAUSE I did a joke there about Weight

:15:33.:15:36.

Watchers on that clip. It's not easy losing weight. I've had

:15:36.:15:42.

complaints about that. A woman came up to me, a larger lay lady, big

:15:42.:15:50.

boned. She said "How do you think I feel?" I said "Skwidgey. You've

:15:50.:15:55.

lost weight as well. A lot of weight. It was just life on the

:15:55.:15:59.

road. You're eating late night, unhealthy food, being a comedian is

:15:59.:16:04.

an unhealthy thing. You're up and down the motorways, eating pasties

:16:04.:16:07.

or whatever it is that's open at that time. You're constantly

:16:07.:16:12.

touring. How well do you know the country do you think? Inside out.

:16:12.:16:15.

This is going into a game. We're putting your knowledge to the test.

:16:15.:16:21.

I've been to every town in Britain. I don't do the big rooms.. I do

:16:21.:16:26.

limb rooms. I think the smaller the town, the better the response.

:16:26.:16:30.

have snapshots of places. If we show you three, can you guess where

:16:30.:16:36.

are you? Yeah definitely. Give it a ring. It's a reception bell. I love

:16:36.:16:46.
:16:46.:16:49.

You performed here the 29th January, 2009, 27th September, 2011. Leny

:16:49.:16:58.

Henry was born here. Dudley. It is! APPLAUSE

:16:58.:17:04.

The Town Hall in dud sli where I play. It's really nice. Totally

:17:04.:17:14.
:17:14.:17:18.

from Birmingham. Here's the next I've got it. Inverness. Good.

:17:18.:17:22.

you're a comedian, you're on stage for two hours a night, the rest of

:17:22.:17:27.

the day I'm round the shops. Looking for deals. Looking for

:17:27.:17:33.

deals on Groupon. Let's see if we can bankrupt this baker. OK. You

:17:33.:17:38.

did very well. Two out of two. know two towns in Britain. From

:17:38.:17:41.

Inverness to Somerset now. The Heath family got in touch with us

:17:41.:17:45.

because they had a mystery that needed solving. Time for Detective

:17:45.:17:55.
:17:55.:17:57.

In a house in Somerset there are sorry sights to behold for the

:17:57.:18:01.

Heath fallily. There are no eggs for their toasted soldiers. No

:18:01.:18:08.

butter for the sandwiches. And no cakes are being baked. But why?

:18:08.:18:12.

Because something or someone is stealing food right off the Heath's

:18:12.:18:17.

doorstep. I've come town cover exactly who or what is poaching the

:18:17.:18:21.

eggs and butter. This summer is the first time it's

:18:22.:18:26.

happened. It's become a weekly occurrence. Helen, come on, what's

:18:26.:18:31.

been going on? Well, it's just been really strange because we've had 18

:18:31.:18:36.

months of milk deliveries, then suddenly one morning we went to

:18:36.:18:40.

collect the eggs and the egg box had been eaten. Something had eaten

:18:40.:18:45.

all around and taken the eggs out and eaten some of the eggs. They'd

:18:45.:18:50.

taken a pack of butter and drag today part way down the path.

:18:50.:18:56.

any idea what might be nicking the butter? I think a badger, because a

:18:56.:19:00.

badger is down there. Your prime suspect is a badger. And you're a

:19:00.:19:04.

friend of the family, what do you think? I think it's a bear that's

:19:04.:19:09.

escaped from the zoo. A bear! That's known as a long shot, but a

:19:09.:19:15.

funny one. And Emily, what do you think? I think it's a fox or badger.

:19:15.:19:19.

I think it's something smaller. We saw a little claw mark in the

:19:19.:19:25.

butter one day. I think it's something like a stoat. Mammals

:19:25.:19:31.

seem to be the chief suspects. To solve the mystery the Heaths have

:19:31.:19:35.

left the body of evidence undisturbed. Here we are! The scene

:19:35.:19:41.

of the crime. You see where the yolk has run on the flag stone. The

:19:41.:19:45.

egg box is down there. Where did the butter end up? That was dragged

:19:45.:19:49.

down the path. Just looking round here and checking out the evidence,

:19:49.:19:55.

it's much clearer to me what is probably causing this. I think for

:19:55.:20:00.

you chaps, the plot is thickening. Definitely. Very much. Looking at

:20:00.:20:04.

the carnage left behind I can definitely rule out a mammal being

:20:04.:20:09.

the perpetrator. Firstly, the eggs haven't been removed from the scene

:20:09.:20:15.

of the crime. Where they have been broken, they've not been smashed to

:20:15.:20:19.

bits. There's just a hole in one side. That tells me the culprit

:20:19.:20:28.

hasn't got four legs, it's got two. So, what can it be? The milkman

:20:28.:20:35.

usually delivers the milk, eggs and butter around 5am. The Heaths are

:20:35.:20:40.

often about by 8am, leaving plenty of time for the culprit to commit

:20:40.:20:45.

the crime. The One Show team set up motion detecting cameras, a packet

:20:45.:20:50.

of butter and a tantalising fresh car ton of eggs, hoping the guilty

:20:50.:20:54.

party would be caught on cam ra. Luckily, those greedy well doers

were. The One Show has solved your who done it. Are you ready to see?

:21:01.:21:05.

This clip will reveal all. You weren't even in the right group of

:21:05.:21:15.
:21:15.:21:21.

That's a magpie. That's amazing! I never thought it was a bird

:21:21.:21:26.

never thought it was a bird actually. This is absolutely

:21:26.:21:30.

brilliant. They are really clever birds. They're a member of the crow

:21:30.:21:34.

family. They're really smart. They're taking advantage of a

:21:34.:21:38.

window in between when the milkman comes and when your mum and dad get

:21:38.:21:42.

up. Isn't that astonishing. eggs are smashed because of its

:21:42.:21:46.

beak. The beak is really strong on magpies. Do you remember the

:21:46.:21:53.

butter? Watch this. It comes up to the camera and makes sure the coast

:21:53.:21:57.

is clear and drag it's down the garden path. That's amaigz. I've

:21:57.:22:03.

never seen them doing this before. They will eat berries, fruit, but

:22:03.:22:08.

particularly when they're raising their chicks, they steal lots of

:22:08.:22:12.

eggs from other birds' nests and take chicks out of the nests.

:22:12.:22:16.

They're real predators. I never thought it would be birds. I just

:22:16.:22:21.

think it's weird. With this new- found knowledge, Helen's eggs and

:22:21.:22:25.

butter will be placed well out of harm's way. The magpies will have

:22:25.:22:27.

harm's way. The magpies will have to look elsewhere for their free

:22:27.:22:35.

breakfast. Mystery solved. How dare he!

:22:35.:22:40.

delightly worried, what's the item about, magpies' cholesterol level?

:22:40.:22:49.

Serious health issue here. Leave some all bran out. Poor little

:22:49.:22:59.
:22:59.:22:59.

things. Diabetic magpies. Something must be done. As you said in the

:22:59.:23:03.

film, magpies are from a particularly clever family.

:23:03.:23:11.

crow family. We think parrots or mynahs, but this is a raifpb,

:23:11.:23:17.

they're coming in to -- raven, they're coming in to winter roost.

:23:17.:23:21.

If three people walk into the roost before it goes dark, they won't go

:23:21.:23:25.

in unless all three come out F two come out, they won't come in. They

:23:25.:23:30.

can count. They can fly as well. During your research, you have come

:23:30.:23:34.

up to another bird not related to the crow, but could be related to

:23:34.:23:41.

the Carr family. Yes, this hornbill called julio was spotted by Seann

:23:41.:23:51.
:23:51.:23:54.

Walsh. -- Gary Gary Warlow in Whitstable. Let's hear the laugh.

:23:54.:24:04.
:24:04.:24:08.

It's very close. That is remarkably similar and slightly humiliating.

:24:08.:24:17.

Thank you very much. It's a weird laugh. Each year Christmas cards

:24:17.:24:21.

raise an estimated 50 million for charity. When they were first

:24:21.:24:28.

invented they caused a scandal. million times, but rather than

:24:28.:24:31.

spreading seasonal goodwill, the very first commercial Christmas

:24:31.:24:37.

cards caused something of a controversy. It all began in 1843

:24:37.:24:44.

with a packed diary of one Mr Henry Coal.

:24:44.:24:50.

# Ding dong merily on high... # He was the Renaissance man in

:24:50.:24:55.

Victorian London. He was a designer, inventor and entrepreneur, a book

:24:55.:25:00.

publisher, a leading light in the great exhibition of 1851 and he

:25:00.:25:04.

still found time to found the Victoria and Albert museum. This

:25:04.:25:10.

was one busy bee. Too busy to write to all his nearest and dearest at

:25:10.:25:15.

Christmas, Henry had a brainwave. He would commission a thousand pre-

:25:15.:25:19.

printed cards that he could send to friends and relations and then sell

:25:19.:25:26.

the rest in his shop. But his inspired idea was at odds with the

:25:26.:25:31.

rising puritan tide. The card was designed by leading artist JC

:25:31.:25:36.

Whoresly. He came up with a middle class family scene, with

:25:36.:25:40.

festivities being enjoyed and good works for the poor being done. But

:25:40.:25:46.

look closely, a young child is sipping from a large gablet of wine.

:25:46.:25:52.

-- goblet of wine. Scandal. Alcohol was thought to be the demon drink

:25:52.:26:00.

by the teetotal tem prance movement who demanded complete abs napbs.

:26:00.:26:02.

Crusading against public drunkenness the movement was

:26:02.:26:06.

gaining momentum. The public promotion of alcohol on a Christmas

:26:06.:26:14.

card was too much for some to bear. There had been concern about people

:26:14.:26:18.

drinking since the 18th century, but after the passage of the beer

:26:18.:26:22.

act in 1830, when drink became much more available and there was much

:26:22.:26:28.

more public drinkenness, the movement to make tem prance tea-

:26:29.:26:33.

totallism was born, so not having any alcohol at all. The movement

:26:33.:26:40.

swept the country. There were many, many temperance societies. What

:26:40.:26:44.

would have been the reaction to seeing that image on a Christmas

:26:44.:26:47.

card? I think it would have been absolute horror. This would be like

:26:47.:26:53.

a red rag to a bull, because people would have seen illustrations

:26:53.:26:57.

promoting temperance showing a child being given drink by its

:26:57.:27:00.

mother. To have that in a Christmas card would have been appalling.

:27:01.:27:05.

as we know, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Word spread about

:27:05.:27:10.

the card and its alcoholic youngster. Sales rose. The first

:27:10.:27:18.

thousand print run sold out. And a reprint was ordered.

:27:19.:27:24.

# Hark, the herald angels sing # Glory to the newborn king #

:27:24.:27:28.

He had a Christmas hit on his hands, and the tradition of mass produced

:27:28.:27:35.

Christmas cards had begun. And how smart was this? Three years earlier,

:27:35.:27:39.

in 1840, he had also helped to invent the way these cards would be

:27:39.:27:44.

delivered. He was one of the men behind the penny post. What he was

:27:44.:27:51.

really good at was publicity. He publicised pro, deucing leaflets,

:27:51.:27:56.

pamphlets, doing dramatic sketches. He did cartoons. He even did jokes

:27:56.:28:01.

where he invaded Post Offices. Anything to bring the cause to the

:28:01.:28:06.

penny post to the public eye. Three years after the introduction, here

:28:06.:28:11.

he is promoting a Christmas card which will massively boost the

:28:11.:28:18.

sales of postage stamps. Henry created a scandal that created a

:28:18.:28:22.

global multimillion pound industry. Little can he have known 170 years

:28:22.:28:27.

after he sent the first one, the Christmas card would still be going.

:28:27.:28:32.

So as you write yours, don't be too quick to curse him, before Henry,

:28:32.:28:42.
:28:42.:28:48.

you'd have been writing Christmas Very festive. Thanks very much

:28:48.:28:52.

Jimmy. Don't send me a card with a letter telling me how good your

:28:52.:28:57.
