Hello and welcome to The One Show with Matt Baker... And Alex Jones.

:00:21.:00:24.

Tonight, two burly northern bikers who love nothing better than taking

:00:24.:00:31.

their passion for food on the road. They are also very, very hairy.

:00:31.:00:41.
:00:41.:00:49.

is of course Si King and Dave Myers What comes first? Food, motorbikes

:00:49.:00:59.
:00:59.:01:05.

or your hair? Everything. There is lots of filling in tonight Show.

:01:05.:01:11.

Also with us tonight: The One Show's street barber, Michael

:01:11.:01:14.

Douglas, will be unleashing his scissors on two hairy fellas in

:01:14.:01:24.
:01:24.:01:24.

need of a trim. Are you happy about this? I am not entirely sure.

:01:24.:01:31.

take the ends of. Nothing to worry about. That is all I have left.

:01:31.:01:36.

have not actually got that long. are also going to be talking pies

:01:36.:01:40.

and tucking into a festive one with Si and Dave later on. This has

:01:40.:01:43.

become a familiar sight - a sinister looking mask - worn at

:01:43.:01:46.

anti-capitalist protests around the world. But why do they wear it and

:01:46.:01:54.

what does it mean? Justin Rowlatt has been finding out. From New York

:01:54.:02:00.

to Madrid, to Rome and to London, waves of protesters have come out

:02:00.:02:05.

against politicians and financial institutions the world over. Some

:02:05.:02:11.

protesters have adopted an eerie mask - first worn in 2007. They

:02:11.:02:16.

have since spread throughout the global protest movement. Where does

:02:16.:02:23.

the mask come from and what does it mean? Some of you might recognise

:02:23.:02:27.

this leering face with its moustache, pointy beard and

:02:27.:02:37.
:02:37.:02:39.

sinister smirk from the 2006 fell, the for Vendetta. This is a masked

:02:39.:02:45.

vigilante and the film's anti-hero. It is my very good honour to meet

:02:45.:02:50.

you. The film tells of a future Britain under a fascist

:02:51.:02:54.

dictatorship. The hero emerges to torment the ruling powers with acts

:02:54.:03:03.

of violent resistance. Perhaps less well known is that the film is

:03:03.:03:09.

based on a 30-year-old comic strip of the same name. It was the

:03:09.:03:14.

brainchild of Alan law and David Lloyd. We produced something that

:03:14.:03:21.

was like a warning against the possibility of a future fascist

:03:21.:03:26.

dictatorship. Both Allen and myself were very concerned about the rise

:03:26.:03:31.

of the far right. We wanted to combine an adventure strip with

:03:31.:03:36.

something was a social warning. a comic strip, he has asocial

:03:36.:03:45.

desire to create a better Britain. It is a vision of 1984 with a brave

:03:45.:03:53.

new world, in which we warned what could happen. Why does the main

:03:53.:03:59.

character wear a mask? I had a brainstorm. We could resurrect the

:03:59.:04:05.

character of Guy Fawkes. He had a mask because he was representing

:04:05.:04:10.

someone other than himself. It was a good way of establishing the

:04:10.:04:15.

revolutionary spirit of the character. The mask was first used

:04:15.:04:21.

by the protest group Anonymous but has since spread to other groups. A

:04:21.:04:25.

lot of people seeing protesters in masks think that those people are

:04:25.:04:31.

trying to hide something. Up we are trying to hide something - our

:04:31.:04:36.

faces. We do not believe in violence. We do not want violence.

:04:36.:04:44.

Anyone who does, they are not part of Anonymous. Today it is worn by

:04:44.:04:48.

some protesters at occupied London. This is the man who designed the

:04:48.:04:57.

mask that you are all wearing. use it for the same reasons. The EC

:04:57.:05:02.

ourselves as freedom fighters. Guy Fawkes was the only man to enter

:05:02.:05:09.

parliament with honest intentions. The mask represents every man.

:05:09.:05:13.

Should you not stand up and identify ourselves so you are

:05:13.:05:18.

personally accountable for what you're arguing? In certain

:05:18.:05:22.

countries, without anonymity, they could not rise up against

:05:22.:05:28.

oppressive regimes. You are not being honest about who you are.

:05:28.:05:33.

From the left side of politics and the right side of politics, we're

:05:33.:05:38.

citizens of openness and transparency. Around 100,000 of

:05:38.:05:43.

these masts are sold every year. Who would imagine and I must

:05:43.:05:48.

vigilante from an obscure comet series would become such a potent

:05:48.:05:58.

:06:01.:06:09.

the inspiration for 140 different fillings? It is a seminal work. We

:06:45.:06:50.

cranberry and kumquat source on the top. It is a good leftover pie.

:06:51.:06:58.

Where do you stand with the pastry? Short crust or puff pastry?

:06:58.:07:05.

Sometimes a short crust bottom and a puff top was dubbed nothing but

:07:12.:07:21.

I find puff pastry a bit drive. are eating the wrong puff pastry. -

:07:40.:07:47.

like a romance. I knew they would use that. That is what they're like

:07:55.:08:02.

do not. -- A T F. We are like brothers. We have been on the road

:08:02.:08:09.

for such a long time, we know when to give each other a bit of space.

:08:09.:08:14.

We had a row over mayonnaise. I maintained you do not make

and we realised it was stupid. at this! There are crests

you how to throw a Christmas party. It involves a lot of singing.

:09:12.:09:17.

is it, every time we have a party, we're stuck here cooking in the

middle of the night? That is what # walking in at a winter

That was lovely. Very nice. Let's talk Christmas. What will you be

and it is all about film -- food. Cut yourself a piece of pie. Ruth

:11:02.:11:07.

Goodman has been investigating a culinary mystery. Bamburgh Castle

:11:07.:11:13.

is one of the most spectacular on the North East of England. It was

:11:13.:11:18.

pivotal to British history. Until the 10th century it was one of the

:11:18.:11:23.

key Anglo Saxon strongholds. This was the seat of the kings of

:11:23.:11:28.

Northumbria. They learned stretch from the Cumbria to the Firth of

:11:28.:11:33.

Forth. Here mighty warriors and scheming politicians met.

:11:33.:11:39.

Archaeologists are finding these mighty lords had a very sweet tooth.

:11:39.:11:43.

Today, the oldest part of the castle dates from the twelfth-

:11:43.:11:50.

century. Annual excavation has revealed a fast Anglo Saxon

:11:50.:11:54.

cemetery from the 8th and 9th centuries. The skeletons there were

:11:54.:11:58.

buried here are telling us a lot about the indulgent lifestyles of

:11:58.:12:04.

the Lords who lived at the castle. It tells us about the lifestyle of

:12:04.:12:12.

the Bamba people. What is missing is the teeth. -- Bamber. The teeth

:12:12.:12:22.

on these skulls are riddled with Carrick to -- cavities. There is a

:12:22.:12:29.

big hole. That is a rotten tooth. These badly rotted teeth are not

:12:29.:12:34.

signs of a poor lifestyle. This is caused by a diet high in sugar of

:12:34.:12:41.

which, in Anglo Saxon times, was very unusual. They did not have

:12:41.:12:44.

should there so Hanneke was the sweetener of choice. They were

:12:44.:12:51.

clearly enjoying a very lavish diet. You would not find this in the

:12:51.:13:01.

general Anglo Saxon population. is different from Anglo Saxon

:13:13.:13:18.

were well known across the land. They were the social elite of their

:13:18.:13:23.

day. Partying was a big part of their lives. Contemporary accounts

:13:23.:13:29.

says guests would travel hundreds of miles to a legendary feast.

:13:29.:13:34.

Excavations of the kitchen tip are showing just how splendid the

:13:34.:13:39.

legendary medieval banquets really were. Archaeologists are finding

:13:39.:13:49.
:13:49.:13:50.

remains of some of the finest foods. This looks fantastic. We used the

:13:50.:13:54.

foodstuff we were finding in the excavation to find out what they

:13:54.:14:02.

were eating. These things, we have wheat grain. Types of bread, brown

:14:02.:14:10.

bread and white bread. Hazelnuts. A lot of seafood. We have lots of

:14:10.:14:15.

beef. The main reason for the back teeth was honey. It was expensive

:14:15.:14:21.

and sometimes used as currency to pay rent. Lots of the most popular

:14:21.:14:25.

dishes contained large quantities of it. Even the equivalent of the

:14:25.:14:34.

bread roll was made with it. This is where the honey comes in.

:14:34.:14:40.

Definitely. They get cavities. going to try a bit of honey cake.

:14:40.:14:46.

That is nice. What really did for their teeth was the mead. It was

:14:46.:14:53.

central to medieval culture. It could contain about half a pint of

:14:53.:14:58.

honey. It is amazing how you could get from dried up remains to a big,

:14:58.:15:05.

luscious diet. It is wonderful. Tasting it for a change. I think

:15:05.:15:12.

you should have some mead. Ruin your teeth. The people who lived at

:15:12.:15:17.

Bamber and their guests were rich, successful, glamourous people. You

:15:17.:15:23.

can imagine them when you are standing here, enjoying a huge

beast. With the most terrible How did you find Bamburgh Castle?

:15:39.:15:43.

:15:43.:15:52.

We have filmed their back-up of times. It is a special place and

:15:53.:15:57.

most of that family holidays were spent on the beach there. You just

:15:57.:16:04.

get the most amazing views. It is actually quite a quiet place as

:16:05.:16:12.

well. Because it is so beautiful you would think it would be crowded.

:16:12.:16:18.

But it is quite peaceful. It is just fantastic. In winter time and

:16:18.:16:24.

summertime, just spectacular. Best of British series is on

barber Michael Douglas is here to give our hairy bikers a trim. He is

:17:19.:17:27.

ready for you now. It is like going to the dentist!

:17:27.:17:35.

Welcome to the salon. When is the last time you were at one of these?

:17:35.:17:37.

While Michael gets started on them, here's what happened when he took

:17:37.:17:44.

his hair dressing paraphernalia to a Christmas market in Winchester.

:17:44.:17:48.

To a Christmas traditions seem to have sprung up in recent years -

:17:48.:17:54.

ice rinks and German Markets. I have come to Winchester and the

:17:54.:18:04.
:18:04.:18:06.

market here is expected to get over 300 visitors. I love Christmas!

:18:06.:18:15.

She is pretty good. Do you fancy a haircut? What is it you're doing

:18:15.:18:21.

here? I am a Marshall, I am here just to make sure that everyone is

:18:21.:18:27.

safe. And get the feeling that you're used to skating? I have been

:18:27.:18:32.

doing it since I was about five years old. Where did you get these?

:18:32.:18:38.

The internet! I would just give you belittle trim. You used to be a

:18:38.:18:43.

champion? I was in the British championships and I did win it one

:18:43.:18:53.
:18:53.:19:17.

year. Right, almost finished. Take This is ed from the world famous

:19:35.:19:42.

that be your favourite Christmas Song? Hark, the Herald Angels sing.

:19:42.:19:49.

What kind of hair cut can you get away with? Among he can? I do not

:19:49.:19:55.

know if that would be allowed. does Christmas hold for you? I will

:19:55.:19:58.

be singing in the cathedral right up until about 5 o'clock on

:19:58.:20:04.

Christmas Day. I think we're almost finished. The perfect, that is

:20:04.:20:14.
:20:14.:20:15.

fantastic. Can we take a look? A feast of colour.

:20:15.:20:22.

Time for a bit of relaxing Christmas shopping. This is like a

:20:22.:20:31.

dream come true! Honestly, I am too busy! This is Clare and she has got

:20:31.:20:36.

lovely hair but she does not want it all so we're going to lose it.

:20:36.:20:44.

What kind of things do you sell? sell things that are supposed to

:20:44.:20:54.
:20:54.:20:59.

look like Brussels sprouts. Where has this come from?! There you go.

:20:59.:21:07.

Are you ready? I am scared! Take a look. I love it. I was scared but

:21:07.:21:15.

now I love it. Haircuts finished, I'm going to

:21:15.:21:25.
:21:25.:21:32.

have a go on the ice. Do I go that way? I am going to do that. I think

:21:32.:21:42.
:21:42.:21:50.

I will leave it to the professionals.

:21:51.:22:00.
:22:01.:22:07.

What look of we going for? I think it is definitely a Viking look.

:22:07.:22:14.

is very straight at the back. are hairy biker, you cannot have a

:22:14.:22:24.
:22:24.:22:25.

pony tail if you are a Hairy Bikers. What are you doing here? Much of

:22:25.:22:35.

the same. It's all I have got! the name Hairy Bikers has an irony

:22:35.:22:45.
:22:45.:22:50.

for you? Yes, I developed alopecia up when I was young. I developed

:22:50.:22:59.

proper hair when I was 40. But when I was 14 I had no hair or eyelashes.

:22:59.:23:09.
:23:09.:23:12.

Just like a big embryo! It was not a good look at the time. Are you

:23:12.:23:17.

worried about losing it again? really. What was left, I just shade

:23:17.:23:27.
:23:27.:23:30.

it. You knew me for years as a bald man. He had a full beard but no

:23:30.:23:39.

hair! You could lose yours in solidarity and become the balding

:23:39.:23:48.

bikers. One hairdresser is said to me, you have terrible split ends.

:23:48.:23:58.
:23:58.:23:58.

But now all I would kill for a split end! If you have a hairy

:23:58.:24:01.

friend that needs veterinary care, the costs can mount up to thousands.

:24:01.:24:06.

So taking out pet insurance could be a sensible option. The pet

:24:06.:24:08.

insurance market is volatile, with a few big names pulling out over

:24:09.:24:13.

the last few years. The latest to leave pet owners barking mad is

:24:13.:24:23.
:24:23.:24:28.

Halifax, as Lucy Siegle explains. We absolutely love pets in this

:24:28.:24:33.

country. Half of all households have either a cat or dog. They may

:24:33.:24:38.

look adorable but that is a huge amount of money we are walking out

:24:38.:24:42.

in bills. And these are expensive times to get treatment for Sick

:24:42.:24:47.

animals. These are on the up which means the only way to access to

:24:47.:24:53.

affordable treatment is to take out pet insurance. According to the

:24:53.:24:56.

British Veterinary Association it is the sensible thing to do, but

:24:56.:25:00.

more of us are choosing not to have insurance in order to save money.

:25:00.:25:04.

But for those who still want pet insurance, it is becoming harder

:25:04.:25:08.

and the options available are not always clear. And in some cases

:25:08.:25:15.

they are disappearing altogether. Linda's Dalmatian is nine years old.

:25:15.:25:21.

He has had Halifax Insurance since he was three years old. His

:25:21.:25:27.

premiums are higher because he is a pedigree. He has had two operations

:25:27.:25:32.

in the past year which cost a massive 2,300. However the full

:25:32.:25:38.

amount was picked up by the insurance company. But not any more.

:25:38.:25:41.

Jake was covered by the same policy for years and it was renewed

:25:41.:25:46.

annually. He was healthy when it started but even when he got ill he

:25:46.:25:50.

was still covered under the terms. However this year Halifax announced

:25:50.:25:55.

it was pulling out of the pet insurance market altogether and the

:25:55.:26:02.

policy was withdrawn. This left Jake high and stride.

:26:02.:26:08.

What did you understand by that policy? I understood that he would

:26:08.:26:12.

be covered for everything and anything and for the period of his

:26:12.:26:16.

lifetime. They have just dropped just like a stone and it is

:26:16.:26:21.

disgusting. Halifax is not doing anything wrong by withdrawing the

:26:21.:26:29.

policy but Linda now cannot get new cover for the baddest -- bladder

:26:29.:26:36.

stones as companies will not cover for pre-existing conditions. If he

:26:36.:26:41.

needs another operation we do not know what we will do. It is

:26:41.:26:46.

devastating. Owners have lost their cover are up in arms and an online

:26:46.:26:49.

petition has been signed by hundreds of people. Halifax told us

:26:49.:26:54.

that it was clear in a document that the policy was an annual one.

:26:54.:26:58.

They say their share of the market is small but they are sorry for any

:26:58.:27:03.

inconvenience caused. The bank made the decision to pull out to

:27:03.:27:06.

concentrate on their core Markets and they did not take the decision

:27:06.:27:11.

lightly. All pet owners could face tough times as the market is

:27:11.:27:15.

changing. This expert says that underwriters have also pulled out

:27:15.:27:21.

because it is too hard to make a profit. Why do you think those big

:27:21.:27:29.

players have had to retreat? It is not like the other insurance

:27:29.:27:37.

Markets. Mostly the claims are low- volume. So the insurance companies

:27:37.:27:42.

do not want to lose out but does it not mean that many consumers will

:27:42.:27:49.

lose out? Many will find themselves without the same cover as before.

:27:49.:27:54.

It will not be quite so comprehensive. With confusion and

:27:54.:27:58.

higher prices, it you need to make sure you get the right cover. If

:27:58.:28:03.

you cannot get that then the best bet is to start saving for a rainy

:28:03.:28:09.

day as soon as you get your pet. I wonder how much it costs to

:28:09.:28:14.

insure this Jack Russell? Uggi, the skateboarding dog from America,

:28:14.:28:17.

will star in a new film called The Artist, out in cinemas at the end

:28:17.:28:27.
:28:27.:28:28.
