Coming up on today's live Blue Peter, | 6:48:10 | 6:48:12
we show you how to trick your friends with photos like these. | 6:48:12 | 6:48:16
We visit Kiev, where they make chicken with a runny garlic centre. | 6:48:19 | 6:48:22
Only kidding, it is a city where | 6:48:22 | 6:48:23
the Euro 2012 final will be held this weekend. | 6:48:23 | 6:48:26
And Stephan Gates milkshakes it up with the Shake It Up Girls. | 6:48:26 | 6:48:30
Do it, do it. Good job. | 6:48:30 | 6:48:32
-Hello. -Hello. Hi. | 6:48:50 | 6:48:52
-Welcome to Blue Peter. -Welcome to the show, how you doing? | 6:48:52 | 6:48:55
Now, let's talk about England. Their dreams of winning Euro 2012 | 6:48:55 | 6:48:58
are shattered. They were beaten last Sunday by Italy. | 6:48:58 | 6:49:01
So that leaves one question, who's going to win the tournament? | 6:49:01 | 6:49:04
Luckily for us, we have two guys in the know. | 6:49:04 | 6:49:06
It's time for our footie pundits, Bobby and Will. | 6:49:06 | 6:49:09
Welcome to the final edition of Bobby And Will's Kick-off | 6:49:12 | 6:49:16
with me, Bobby Fuller. | 6:49:16 | 6:49:17
And for the final time, me Will Nye. | 6:49:17 | 6:49:19
And speaking of finals, we've got our predictions | 6:49:19 | 6:49:22
for the Euro 2012 final this Sunday. | 6:49:22 | 6:49:24
GONG | 6:49:24 | 6:49:25 | |
Spain booked themselves a place in Sunday's final last night | 6:49:25 | 6:49:29
after this winning goal. | 6:49:29 | 6:49:31
'Fabregas could do it for Spain.' | 6:49:31 | 6:49:33
'And does...just!' | 6:49:37 | 6:49:40
'It's Fabregas and it's Spain to Kiev in the final.' | 6:49:41 | 6:49:47
-Yes, an excellent finish there, Bobby. -Certainly, Will. | 6:49:47 | 6:49:49
But who do we think they're going to face | 6:49:49 | 6:49:51
out of Germany and Italy in the final? I'm going to go with Germany | 6:49:51 | 6:49:54
as they've got midfielder Mesut Ozil who's a magician with the ball. | 6:49:54 | 6:49:58
What, like dynamo? | 6:49:58 | 6:49:59
Does he do the one where you pull a coin behind someone's ear? | 6:49:59 | 6:50:02
Like... Ooh! | 6:50:02 | 6:50:05
He's not an actual magician, Will. | 6:50:05 | 6:50:08
Oh. Anyway, I disagree with you there. | 6:50:08 | 6:50:11
I think that Italy will progress. | 6:50:11 | 6:50:13
Andrea Pirlo could single-handedly take them to the final. | 6:50:13 | 6:50:16
He looks as old as my dad. | 6:50:16 | 6:50:18
But it doesn't matter anyway as we both agree | 6:50:18 | 6:50:20
that Spain will win the tournament. | 6:50:20 | 6:50:22
And that, our faithful viewers, is the final prediction | 6:50:22 | 6:50:25
of Bobby And Will's Kick-off. | 6:50:25 | 6:50:26
We're off for a well-earned rest. See you later, sports fans. | 6:50:26 | 6:50:30
Thank you very much, Bobby and Will. I kind of agree. I'm backing Spain. | 6:50:33 | 6:50:36
They are legends. The only two football pundits ever to grow | 6:50:36 | 6:50:39
different moustaches depending on the make-up artist on the day. | 6:50:39 | 6:50:42
Now, of course, as Euro 2012 comes to a close, | 6:50:42 | 6:50:45
so does our trip around its host cities, Poland and Ukraine. | 6:50:45 | 6:50:48
Now, it's been great to show you the sights, sounds and flavours | 6:50:48 | 6:50:52
of the two host countries, but for the final leg of our trip, | 6:50:52 | 6:50:55
I head to Kiev in the Ukraine. While I was there, | 6:50:55 | 6:50:57
I went to see the stadium in which England crashed out | 6:50:57 | 6:51:00
of the tournament, but let's not dwell on that. | 6:51:00 | 6:51:02
let's move on and find out what happened when I went to Kiev. | 6:51:02 | 6:51:06
On the trip, we've travelled around 1300 miles, | 6:51:08 | 6:51:11
but I have 500 more to go because I'm going to the host city | 6:51:11 | 6:51:14
of the Euro 2012 final. | 6:51:14 | 6:51:17
Kiev is the capital city of Europe's second largest country, Ukraine. | 6:51:17 | 6:51:22
It's home to around 3 million people and one of its most | 6:51:22 | 6:51:25
distinctive landmarks is this 62 metre high stainless steel statue | 6:51:25 | 6:51:29
commemorating those who died in the Second World War. | 6:51:29 | 6:51:33
This historic city has a stunning skyline that is peppered with gold. | 6:51:33 | 6:51:37
Check out the roof of St Michael's Cathedral. | 6:51:37 | 6:51:39
That isn't just the building, it's a piece of art. | 6:51:39 | 6:51:43
And Kiev is about to become big in the sporting world, too, | 6:51:44 | 6:51:47
because in a few days' time, it will play host to the final footie match | 6:51:47 | 6:51:51
for Euro 2012. | 6:51:51 | 6:51:52
this stadium was completely rebuilt for the Euros | 6:51:52 | 6:51:55
and it will be the stage for the final | 6:51:55 | 6:51:57
of the European Championships 2012. | 6:51:57 | 6:52:00
it is, after all, one of the best football tournaments in the world. | 6:52:00 | 6:52:03
On this trip, all of our accommodation has been a surprise. | 6:52:07 | 6:52:10
I need to open my envelope to find out where I'm staying tonight. | 6:52:10 | 6:52:13
Results. I'm staying in a boat. Thank you. | 6:52:13 | 6:52:16
I guess for a boat, I need the river, though. | 6:52:17 | 6:52:19
With the Dnieper River running right through the heart of the city, | 6:52:24 | 6:52:28
my hotel on a boat is pretty central. | 6:52:28 | 6:52:31
Wow! Now, when I read boat, my head immediately conjured up | 6:52:32 | 6:52:35
a picture of a narrow boat, a canal barge type of thing. | 6:52:35 | 6:52:38
But this...looks grand. | 6:52:38 | 6:52:41
'It has 200 rooms and was purpose-built | 6:52:41 | 6:52:44
'as a floating hotel.' | 6:52:44 | 6:52:45
-Thank you. -You're welcome. | 6:52:45 | 6:52:47
Oh, my word. | 6:52:47 | 6:52:50
This is the most striking view I have ever been met with | 6:52:50 | 6:52:53
in a hotel room. Look at this. | 6:52:53 | 6:52:55
I mean, this is unbelievable. | 6:52:55 | 6:52:58
Gorgeous room, gorgeous view, gorgeous weather - | 6:52:59 | 6:53:04
which I'm going to make the most of because I have a feeling | 6:53:04 | 6:53:07
tomorrow could be quite intense. | 6:53:07 | 6:53:09
There is a place in Ukraine that his world-famous, | 6:53:17 | 6:53:20
but for all the wrong reasons. | 6:53:20 | 6:53:22
In Chernobyl, an accident happened in the 1980s | 6:53:22 | 6:53:25
and it's had worldwide effects. | 6:53:25 | 6:53:28
Just two hours north of Kiev is Chernobyl, | 6:53:29 | 6:53:32
a former nuclear power plant. | 6:53:32 | 6:53:34
It's the site of one of the worst disasters in recent history. | 6:53:34 | 6:53:38
In 1986, one of the plants four reactors exploded, | 6:53:39 | 6:53:42
releasing a massive amount of radiation into the air. | 6:53:42 | 6:53:45
the radiation emitted was 300 times as high | 6:53:45 | 6:53:48
as that released by the first ever atomic bomb. | 6:53:48 | 6:53:52
Even though it's over 25 years since the disaster, | 6:53:52 | 6:53:56
radiation levels are still high and a 30-kilometre-wide no-go area | 6:53:56 | 6:54:00
exists around the reactor. This is known as the exclusion zone. | 6:54:00 | 6:54:05
As I pass over its border, I turn on Geiger counter - | 6:54:05 | 6:54:09
a device that reads the amount of radiation in the air around it. | 6:54:09 | 6:54:13
In Kiev, it was reading 0.15, | 6:54:15 | 6:54:18
but this figure is increasing the closer I get to the plant | 6:54:18 | 6:54:21
and is already more than double what it was. | 6:54:21 | 6:54:25
Just inside the border of the exclusion zone | 6:54:25 | 6:54:28
is a monument to the villages, abandoned | 6:54:28 | 6:54:30
because of the tragedy. I'm meeting with Micha, who was evacuated | 6:54:30 | 6:54:33
from the area with his family ten years after the disaster. | 6:54:33 | 6:54:37
How far away from Chernobyl is the village you were born in? | 6:54:37 | 6:54:40
Approximately some 50 kilometres from here. | 6:54:40 | 6:54:44
So, 50 kilometres away, nearly a decade after the explosion, | 6:54:44 | 6:54:48
-people were still being evacuated? -Yep. | 6:54:48 | 6:54:52
So these signs are all the names of the villages | 6:54:52 | 6:54:55
-and places that were evacuated? -Yep, exactly. | 6:54:55 | 6:54:58
Why on one side... What does this mean? | 6:54:58 | 6:55:01
It means that no-one lives there at all. | 6:55:01 | 6:55:04
It means that the village disappeared from the Earth. | 6:55:04 | 6:55:07
-So they've literally been crossed out? -Yep. | 6:55:07 | 6:55:10
Micha is taking me closer to the reactor and as we get nearer, | 6:55:12 | 6:55:16
the radiation levels are getting higher. | 6:55:16 | 6:55:18
Now, this Geiger counter is reading... | 6:55:18 | 6:55:23
-1.38. -It's creeping up all the time. | 6:55:23 | 6:55:25
-Is that because we're getting nearer? -Yeah, exactly. | 6:55:25 | 6:55:28
'The radiation is already over nine times as high | 6:55:28 | 6:55:31
'as the safe levels we saw in Kiev.' | 6:55:31 | 6:55:33
-So, is that the actual power plant? -Yeah. | 6:55:33 | 6:55:36
That doesn't look too solid from here. | 6:55:36 | 6:55:39
It looks kind of tin and almost rusty. | 6:55:39 | 6:55:42
There's a lot of cracks on the walls and the roof. | 6:55:42 | 6:55:44
-So it is possible that it's leaking? -Yep. | 6:55:44 | 6:55:49
So, at what point should we look at this and say, | 6:55:49 | 6:55:52
"That's it, too close." | 6:55:52 | 6:55:53
-It depends on the time which we spend here. -OK. | 6:55:53 | 6:55:56
So if you spend five or ten minutes, it's not so dangerous. | 6:55:56 | 6:55:59
-Right, shall we go closer? -Yep. | 6:55:59 | 6:56:02
While it is safe to go closer, our time here has to be limited. | 6:56:03 | 6:56:07
The radiation released into the atmosphere on the night | 6:56:09 | 6:56:12
of the explosion travelled two times around the world. | 6:56:12 | 6:56:16
It caused an unknown number of serious illnesses | 6:56:16 | 6:56:19
across Europe and beyond. | 6:56:19 | 6:56:21
Micha is taking me to a village just north of the reactor | 6:56:22 | 6:56:25
that was devastated by the events. | 6:56:25 | 6:56:27
Prypiat was completely abandoned just three days after | 6:56:30 | 6:56:33
the fire in the reactor broke out. | 6:56:33 | 6:56:35
Its residents haven't been allowed to return. | 6:56:35 | 6:56:39
So this was the main square? | 6:56:41 | 6:56:43
Yeah, it was the main square of the town Prypiat. | 6:56:43 | 6:56:47
What would these shops have been? | 6:56:47 | 6:56:49
So here, we had a furniture shop, | 6:56:49 | 6:56:51
the children's shop, here were flats of people who lived here. | 6:56:51 | 6:56:56
The people who used to construct the nuclear power plant, | 6:56:56 | 6:56:59
people who constructed the town, they used to live here. | 6:56:59 | 6:57:01
This abandoned Ferris wheel is one of the saddest | 6:57:02 | 6:57:05
and most iconic sights in Prypiat. | 6:57:05 | 6:57:07
The disaster happened just a few weeks before | 6:57:07 | 6:57:10
the funfair was set to open | 6:57:10 | 6:57:12
and it stands today completely unused. | 6:57:12 | 6:57:15
We can't spend long in Prypiat because the radiation is so high. | 6:57:18 | 6:57:21
On the way out, the readings on our Geiger counter spike suddenly. | 6:57:21 | 6:57:25
GEIGER COUNTER TICKS | 6:57:25 | 6:57:27
Oh, my word, it's jumped straight up to seven, eight, nine, ten. | 6:57:28 | 6:57:32
'That's over 70 times the safe levels we saw in Kiev.' | 6:57:32 | 6:57:36
Before it's time to leave the exclusion zone entirely, | 6:57:39 | 6:57:42
Micha takes me as close to the reactor as is safe. | 6:57:42 | 6:57:45
There's so much debate around | 6:57:47 | 6:57:49
how many people were affected. | 6:57:49 | 6:57:50
I mean, can you say at all how many people | 6:57:50 | 6:57:53
suffered as a result of the explosion? | 6:57:53 | 6:57:55
It's quite difficult to tell. According to official data I read... | 6:57:55 | 6:58:00
So the amount, 237 firefighters who took part in extinguishing the fire, | 6:58:00 | 6:58:05
38 of them died. | 6:58:05 | 6:58:07
this monument stands at the foot of the reactor | 6:58:08 | 6:58:11
to commemorate the bravery of the firefighters. | 6:58:11 | 6:58:13
In a weird way, I was keen to come here because I was fascinated | 6:58:17 | 6:58:21
by what I would see and, you know, people have discussed and argued | 6:58:21 | 6:58:25
about Chernobyl for years and they will do for decades to come, | 6:58:25 | 6:58:29
but now that I'm here and I can see the scene of a tragedy | 6:58:29 | 6:58:35
that caused so much suffering around the world, | 6:58:35 | 6:58:37
I just feel...really uncomfortable | 6:58:37 | 6:58:43
and I kind of feel like I'm looking at a car crash and I shouldn't be. | 6:58:43 | 6:58:47
This is telling me that it's time for me to go. | 6:58:47 | 6:58:51
What was it like being there? | 6:58:53 | 6:58:55
It's just very, very eerie. You feel like you shouldn't be there. | 6:58:55 | 6:58:58
If you mentioned Chernobyl to an adult, their eyes were widen | 6:58:58 | 6:59:01
because so many question marks remain over the long-term effects. | 6:59:01 | 6:59:04
It was just a very sad episode in that country's history, | 6:59:04 | 6:59:08
and what an amazing country. | 6:59:08 | 6:59:10
It really is an amazing country. | 6:59:10 | 6:59:11
Poland and Ukraine, when we travelled around we did so many things. | 6:59:11 | 6:59:14
I learnt to Cossack dance, we tried some local delicacies | 6:59:14 | 6:59:18
and there's a film you haven't seen yet which was... I went to Lviv | 6:59:18 | 6:59:20
and actually learnt to make chocolate and that's now an exclusive video | 6:59:20 | 6:59:24
on the website. If you want to check that out it's bbc.co.uk/bluepeter. | 6:59:24 | 6:59:28
I wasn't rolling my eyes, just as you said Cossack-dancing, I went... | 6:59:28 | 6:59:32
It's good, it's worth seeing. There are some web exclusives | 6:59:32 | 6:59:34
so head over to the Blue Peter website. | 6:59:34 | 6:59:36
-Now, there are 29 days until the Olympics. -Can you believe it? | 6:59:36 | 6:59:40
If you've been watching Blue Peter's big Olympic tour at the weekend, | 6:59:40 | 6:59:43
you'll know that we've been competing in our own challenges. | 6:59:43 | 6:59:45
On Saturday, Barney and I took on BMXing. | 6:59:45 | 6:59:48
Each week we take on four celebrities | 6:59:48 | 6:59:51
in a different Olympic event. BMXing was quite eventful | 6:59:51 | 6:59:54
so here's a chance to see what happened. | 6:59:54 | 6:59:56
Your host is Football Focus's Dan Walker. | 6:59:56 | 6:59:58
Here's a reminder of our line-up. | 6:59:59 | 7:00:01
First up, multi-talented singer, Laura. | 7:00:01 | 7:00:04
He's looking the one to beat so far, dancer Brendan. | 7:00:05 | 7:00:08
She's got bundles of energy, actress Adele. | 7:00:09 | 7:00:11
He's cool, calm and collected, it's Romeo. | 7:00:11 | 7:00:15
And still very much in contention, these two, Helen and Barney. | 7:00:16 | 7:00:20
Athletes, welcome. We have reached event five out of nine | 7:00:23 | 7:00:26
in the Blue Peter Olympic challenge. | 7:00:26 | 7:00:28
These beauties are still on offer. The bronze, the silver and the gold. | 7:00:28 | 7:00:32
Who's pumped for this challenge? | 7:00:32 | 7:00:33
ALL: Yes! Can't wait. | 7:00:33 | 7:00:35
We have got, right now, a three-time world champion | 7:00:35 | 7:00:37
to show you how it's done. It's Dylan on the demo. | 7:00:37 | 7:00:40
Hit it, big boy! | 7:00:40 | 7:00:41
There are two tracks here at the National Cycling Centre. | 7:00:44 | 7:00:47
One for the pros like Dylan, and an easier version for our athletes. | 7:00:47 | 7:00:51
It's still going to be a big test of nerve, though. | 7:00:51 | 7:00:53
They've got just one hour to get to grips with the BMX bike | 7:00:53 | 7:00:56
and the bumpy course. | 7:00:56 | 7:00:58
And they soon find out this could be their toughest test so far. | 7:00:59 | 7:01:03
It's just, erm, terrifying. | 7:01:04 | 7:01:06
If I'm being honest, it's really scary. | 7:01:06 | 7:01:08
If you go a little bit too fast, it's all over. | 7:01:08 | 7:01:11
Just one little wobble sends you into a manic panic in your head. | 7:01:12 | 7:01:16
You're like, "Oh no, this is it, I'm going." | 7:01:16 | 7:01:18
This is where it all begins for our athletes on the start ramp. | 7:01:20 | 7:01:23
Fast as you can, legs pumping, and it's when you reach the first hump | 7:01:23 | 7:01:28
that the tactics kick in. | 7:01:28 | 7:01:30
You've got to force yourself down the ramps | 7:01:30 | 7:01:32
to get speed up. You've got to make sure, in terms of pedals, | 7:01:32 | 7:01:35
they've got to be level when you reach something like this. | 7:01:35 | 7:01:37
Otherwise, possible game over. So you've got a men's race, | 7:01:37 | 7:01:40
we've got a women's race, as well, | 7:01:40 | 7:01:42
and at the end of it all, somebody will be crowned BMX Bandit. | 7:01:42 | 7:01:45
Here we are, the women's race, Helen on the inside line | 7:01:47 | 7:01:49
and she could get to the first corner first, | 7:01:49 | 7:01:52
that would he crucial. Shanaze Reade there. | 7:01:52 | 7:01:54
A world champion looking on. No pressure there, then. | 7:01:54 | 7:01:56
And they're off. | 7:01:56 | 7:01:57
Adele, a terrible start. Helen got off well, though. | 7:01:57 | 7:02:00
She's keeping that up, although Laura's coming up to tie the lead. | 7:02:00 | 7:02:03
She struggled on that bump! Helen gets into the first corner first. | 7:02:03 | 7:02:07
And Adele, where is Adele? Oh, she's struggling very badly. | 7:02:07 | 7:02:10
Enjoying it, though. She's going for it still. | 7:02:10 | 7:02:13
Look at the height of the bumps for the leaders. Almost disappeared. | 7:02:13 | 7:02:16
Helen still maintaining the lead over Laura. | 7:02:18 | 7:02:21
She's got a good rhythm going. She's into the last few bumps. | 7:02:21 | 7:02:24
She's going to take it. Good balance. | 7:02:24 | 7:02:28
Laura in second place. Shanaze looks on clapping. | 7:02:28 | 7:02:30
Adele, she's still going. She's determined to finish it. | 7:02:32 | 7:02:36
Well done, Adele. | 7:02:36 | 7:02:38
And that's what it's all about. | 7:02:39 | 7:02:41
I feel like that was the first time I really went for it. | 7:02:42 | 7:02:44
Because someone's on your heels, | 7:02:44 | 7:02:46
you have to go for it and push it. | 7:02:46 | 7:02:48
So now it's the men's turn. | 7:02:49 | 7:02:51
Away they go. | 7:02:52 | 7:02:53
Barney got a good start, as did Romeo, but all together. | 7:02:53 | 7:02:56
Brendan's got the early advantage, though. | 7:02:56 | 7:02:58
He's gone into the first corner in the lead. | 7:02:58 | 7:03:00
Romeo's keeping track. | 7:03:00 | 7:03:02
Barney in third at the moment. | 7:03:02 | 7:03:04
Oh, Barney, where are you going? | 7:03:04 | 7:03:06
He's tried to go down the wrong track. | 7:03:06 | 7:03:08
That'll cost him. He was looking good, as well. | 7:03:08 | 7:03:11
But Brendan's gone into the final corner, he's got a very good lead. | 7:03:11 | 7:03:15
It's his to lose. | 7:03:15 | 7:03:17
Excellent technique - look at the balance, look at the confidence. | 7:03:17 | 7:03:19
He takes it, no problem at all for Brendan. | 7:03:19 | 7:03:22
Here comes Romeo in second place. And, Barney - what could have been? | 7:03:22 | 7:03:27
Romeo's shattered in second place. Brendan, dominating again. | 7:03:28 | 7:03:32
The one race where I thought I had a chance. | 7:03:32 | 7:03:34
I made a mistake, so I stopped, I had no choice. | 7:03:34 | 7:03:38
It's a shame there wasn't a bright orange cone | 7:03:40 | 7:03:42
to tell me where to go, wasn't it? I was so gutted about that. | 7:03:42 | 7:03:45
I like this about you, though. | 7:03:45 | 7:03:47
You pretend you're not competitive, and you are. | 7:03:47 | 7:03:49
I love that you're gutted - you should be! | 7:03:49 | 7:03:51
I did really well in the run through. My fault, anyway. | 7:03:51 | 7:03:54
That result means that, for the first time, | 7:03:54 | 7:03:56
I move into medal contention. | 7:03:56 | 7:03:59
It's all still to play for. | 7:03:59 | 7:04:01
You can find out what happens next | 7:04:01 | 7:04:03
this Saturday morning at 9am on the CBBC channel | 7:04:03 | 7:04:05
when we go head-to-head in tennis. | 7:04:05 | 7:04:07
We'll be in West Park in Wolverhampton. | 7:04:07 | 7:04:09
Come and join us from 10am for the free event. | 7:04:09 | 7:04:11
Here's what you can look forward to getting involved with. | 7:04:11 | 7:04:14
We're in town this Saturday from 10am until 4pm | 7:04:14 | 7:04:17
with Blue Peter's Big Olympic Tour. | 7:04:17 | 7:04:19
You can try out all kinds of different sports, | 7:04:19 | 7:04:22
take part in a Horrible Histories stage show, | 7:04:22 | 7:04:24
and even have a go at being a sports presenter. | 7:04:24 | 7:04:27
It's a free event and you don't need a ticket, | 7:04:28 | 7:04:31
so come along, say hello and enjoy the fun. | 7:04:31 | 7:04:34
So that's a date for your diary, and if you need a new calendar, | 7:04:35 | 7:04:38
look no further than the Blue Peter website, | 7:04:38 | 7:04:41
because Barney has been making a photo calendar. | 7:04:41 | 7:04:43
Every month we've used a different technique to create an image. | 7:04:43 | 7:04:47
We tried macro photography to start - | 7:04:47 | 7:04:49
where you make something really small look really big. | 7:04:49 | 7:04:51
We then tried light painting - one of my favourites, | 7:04:51 | 7:04:54
where you use a torch to create an image. | 7:04:54 | 7:04:56
I'm now going to show you perspective photography, | 7:04:56 | 7:04:58
where you can make something really big look really small, | 7:04:58 | 7:05:01
and the opposite. | 7:05:01 | 7:05:03
And, if you practise really hard, | 7:05:03 | 7:05:05
you should be able to create an effect like this. | 7:05:05 | 7:05:07
It's working! I'm dangling Helen from my hand. | 7:05:07 | 7:05:10
Here's more. | 7:05:10 | 7:05:11
Check out these photos. | 7:05:13 | 7:05:15
They've been taken using a technique called perspective photography. | 7:05:15 | 7:05:19
It's a way of forcing your brain | 7:05:20 | 7:05:22
to make things look different by the use of optical trickery. | 7:05:22 | 7:05:25
So, how does it work? | 7:05:29 | 7:05:30
The trick is actually quite simple. | 7:05:31 | 7:05:33
When an object is close to the lens, it looks really big. | 7:05:33 | 7:05:36
But, when the object moves further away from the lens, | 7:05:36 | 7:05:40
it's really small. | 7:05:40 | 7:05:41
Is that a tiny lion, or a giant camera? | 7:05:41 | 7:05:44
So, what do you need? | 7:05:46 | 7:05:48
Well, you need an open space, so I've come to the park. | 7:05:48 | 7:05:51
This is going to be perfect for what I need. | 7:05:51 | 7:05:53
Second, you need a camera - you can take this picture | 7:05:53 | 7:05:56
on absolutely any camera. | 7:05:56 | 7:05:57
Thirdly, you need a person, a subject | 7:05:57 | 7:05:59
or an object to take a picture of. | 7:05:59 | 7:06:01
Today, I'm going to be using Rob and this football. | 7:06:01 | 7:06:04
Thanks, Rob. | 7:06:04 | 7:06:05
Finally, you need your imagination. | 7:06:05 | 7:06:07
The best perspective photography pictures are the original ones, | 7:06:07 | 7:06:10
so get your thinking caps on, and let's get started. | 7:06:10 | 7:06:13
OK, Rob, are you ready? | 7:06:13 | 7:06:15
About 20 metres that way. | 7:06:15 | 7:06:17
Perfect. | 7:06:18 | 7:06:20
We're going to try to create the effect | 7:06:20 | 7:06:22
of Rob kicking a football towards the camera. | 7:06:22 | 7:06:24
As you can see, Rob is miles away, | 7:06:24 | 7:06:27
and he's going to strike that famous footballing strike pose. | 7:06:27 | 7:06:31
When he does that, Natalie's going to throw the ball into the camera, | 7:06:31 | 7:06:34
and if we time it just right, it'll look like | 7:06:34 | 7:06:36
Rob's kicked the football from where he is right in front of the lens. | 7:06:36 | 7:06:40
'Well, that's the theory, anyway. Fingers crossed.' | 7:06:40 | 7:06:43
Let's try one - one, two, three. | 7:06:43 | 7:06:45
Oh, it's so close, it's so close! | 7:06:46 | 7:06:49
There's Rob's footballing pose we're after. | 7:06:49 | 7:06:51
That one is where the ball ended up. | 7:06:51 | 7:06:54
This takes lots of time and patience, | 7:06:54 | 7:06:56
so don't worry if you don't get it right first time. | 7:06:56 | 7:06:58
Oh, it's so close! | 7:06:58 | 7:07:00
One, two, three. | 7:07:00 | 7:07:02
Yes! We've done it, look! | 7:07:02 | 7:07:04
That's what I'm talking about right there. | 7:07:04 | 7:07:06
Fantastic. I am so pleased with that photo. | 7:07:07 | 7:07:11
Perspective photography is a lot better and way more fun | 7:07:11 | 7:07:14
if you get your friends to help you. | 7:07:14 | 7:07:16
All right, guys! | 7:07:16 | 7:07:17
As you can see, I've brought some top photographers | 7:07:17 | 7:07:20
who've each brought their own camera. | 7:07:20 | 7:07:22
First up is Molly. | 7:07:22 | 7:07:23
She's using a flashy tablet with in-built camera. | 7:07:23 | 7:07:26
Then we've got Mia, | 7:07:26 | 7:07:27
with an instant camera that prints photos straight away. | 7:07:27 | 7:07:30
Kaleem has got a sleek, compact, digital camera. | 7:07:30 | 7:07:33
And Aashir has a low-cost disposable camera that's so retro. | 7:07:33 | 7:07:38
The guys split into pairs to take their photos | 7:07:38 | 7:07:40
and they're coming up with ideas thick and fast. | 7:07:40 | 7:07:43
I've got a dog called Darcy and I want her to be very, very big. | 7:07:43 | 7:07:47
We can make the ball proper big spinning on our finger. | 7:07:47 | 7:07:49
Yeah, I'd like that, yeah. | 7:07:49 | 7:07:50
I brought a balloon and I thought if we blew it up dead big | 7:07:50 | 7:07:53
it'd look well good. | 7:07:53 | 7:07:55
Aashir is trying to take a picture of Kaleem showing off his skills | 7:07:55 | 7:07:58
by spinning a huge football on the end of his finger. | 7:07:58 | 7:08:01
Kaleem's idea is to squash Aashir under my giant foot. | 7:08:01 | 7:08:04
How cruel! | 7:08:04 | 7:08:06
-Face! -I've just stood on your head. | 7:08:06 | 7:08:09
Let's see how the girls are getting on. | 7:08:09 | 7:08:11
Mia's trying to create the effect | 7:08:11 | 7:08:12
of Molly blowing a huge balloon across the park. | 7:08:12 | 7:08:16
-Down a bit. -Have you taken it yet? | 7:08:16 | 7:08:18
Nearly there. | 7:08:18 | 7:08:20
Don't move. | 7:08:20 | 7:08:21
How's that? Oh, that's brilliant. | 7:08:21 | 7:08:24
Molly wants Mia to make her dog, Darcy, enormous | 7:08:24 | 7:08:28
and have Mia give her a kiss - ah, that's cute. | 7:08:28 | 7:08:30
-Now bend down. -Bend down and give a kiss. | 7:08:30 | 7:08:33
THEY LAUGH | 7:08:33 | 7:08:35
That was brilliant, are we happy with our photos? | 7:08:36 | 7:08:39
-ALL: -Yeah! -Fantastic. Aashir, yours is a film camera | 7:08:39 | 7:08:42
so we have to get those developed, | 7:08:42 | 7:08:44
then we'll get all the photographs together and choose the best one, | 7:08:44 | 7:08:47
and that will go into the calendar month of July - sound good? | 7:08:47 | 7:08:50
-ALL: -Yeah! -High-fives. | 7:08:50 | 7:08:52
Well done, team, I can't wait. Don't leave me hanging. | 7:08:52 | 7:08:55
And I'm delighted that our team of photographers | 7:08:56 | 7:08:58
are with us in the studio now. Welcome, team. | 7:08:58 | 7:09:01
Hello, top pro photographers, good to see you here. | 7:09:01 | 7:09:03
Kaleem, what do you like about your photograph? | 7:09:03 | 7:09:06
What I like about my painting... I mean... | 7:09:06 | 7:09:09
Your photo. | 7:09:09 | 7:09:10
Yeah, my photo, is that, | 7:09:10 | 7:09:12
cos it's like you're stepping on Aashir, | 7:09:12 | 7:09:16
and I like how he's put his face, like, to say | 7:09:16 | 7:09:20
that you're actually stepping on him. | 7:09:20 | 7:09:22
It's a good bit of acting, that, Aashir, it really is. | 7:09:22 | 7:09:25
Cos, the way we've put this together | 7:09:25 | 7:09:29
is Aashir is going really far back | 7:09:29 | 7:09:34
and you're near the camera, putting your foot down, | 7:09:34 | 7:09:37
so it looks like you're stepping on him. | 7:09:37 | 7:09:41
It's a brilliant photo. | 7:09:41 | 7:09:42
How about you, Mia? What do you think? | 7:09:42 | 7:09:45
Well, I made Molly look really small by standing really back, | 7:09:45 | 7:09:47
and the balloon looks massive, | 7:09:47 | 7:09:50
so she looks like she's blowing it away. | 7:09:50 | 7:09:52
I like the way it's been done, | 7:09:52 | 7:09:55
that she looks dead small and the balloon looks really big. | 7:09:55 | 7:09:58
They've been really successful, these two photos, Helen. | 7:09:58 | 7:10:01
Yeah, Molly's is pretty impressive, as well. | 7:10:01 | 7:10:04
Are you happy with how it's turned out? | 7:10:04 | 7:10:06
Yeah, I'm really happy, because Darcy was supposed to be | 7:10:06 | 7:10:09
very, very, very big and Mia's supposed to very, very, very small. | 7:10:09 | 7:10:13
But Darcy's really close to the camera, and Mia's taken | 7:10:13 | 7:10:19
loads of steps back and she's bending over and kissing Darcy on her nose. | 7:10:19 | 7:10:24
It works really, really, really well, Molly, so well done, you. | 7:10:24 | 7:10:27
Aashir. | 7:10:27 | 7:10:28
Well, ours wasn't what it turned out to be, because BARNEY... | 7:10:28 | 7:10:33
What?! | 7:10:33 | 7:10:35
-You stepped in front of the photo! -Barney! | 7:10:35 | 7:10:38
I know, what can I say? If I see a lens, I head for it, sorry. | 7:10:38 | 7:10:41
It's not really Barney's fault because our camera was digital, | 7:10:41 | 7:10:45
so you couldn't really see how the photo was going to turn out. | 7:10:45 | 7:10:50
So you didn't use a digital camera, | 7:10:50 | 7:10:52
-so you couldn't see instantly how the photo would look? -No. | 7:10:52 | 7:10:56
It was disposable, so we had to wait for it to be developed, | 7:10:56 | 7:10:58
so if you are going to try doing this, | 7:10:58 | 7:11:00
it's very difficult to use a disposable camera. | 7:11:00 | 7:11:03
Try using a digital camera, you'll have an easier time with it. | 7:11:03 | 7:11:05
We were so impressed with all of your photographs, | 7:11:05 | 7:11:09
that when we were looking and mulling over which one | 7:11:09 | 7:11:11
to put into the calendar we couldn't decide, | 7:11:11 | 7:11:13
so we decided to put them all in. | 7:11:13 | 7:11:16
APPLAUSE | 7:11:16 | 7:11:17
-Happy about that? -ALL: -Yeah. | 7:11:17 | 7:11:20
-LAUGHTER -Practically jumping in the air! | 7:11:20 | 7:11:22
Molly, you asked me four times, I thought you'd be happier! | 7:11:22 | 7:11:25
She's stunned. | 7:11:25 | 7:11:27
There's the calendar, there's the picture | 7:11:27 | 7:11:29
I took with the lovely Rob, and there's yours underneath. | 7:11:29 | 7:11:32
If you want to download this, you can go to the website - | 7:11:32 | 7:11:34
bbc.co.uk/bluepeter. | 7:11:34 | 7:11:35
There's an important date on there, as well - the 27th, | 7:11:35 | 7:11:38
that's when the Olympics come to town. | 7:11:38 | 7:11:40
And if you want to e-mail us your perspective photographs, please do - | 7:11:40 | 7:11:43
[email protected] - We'd love to see them, | 7:11:43 | 7:11:45
and hopefully we'll show them next week. | 7:11:45 | 7:11:47
Another date on that calendar is 4th July, American Independence Day. | 7:11:47 | 7:11:51
It's when Americans have parties and celebrate with fancy food. | 7:11:51 | 7:11:55
So we sent Stefan Gates to make a milkshake | 7:11:55 | 7:11:58
that brings all the girls to the yard. | 7:11:58 | 7:12:00
I couldn't resist it, I'm so sorry! | 7:12:00 | 7:12:02
Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry - | 7:12:03 | 7:12:05
just three of your typical milkshake flavours. | 7:12:05 | 7:12:08
They're all right, but you know me, | 7:12:08 | 7:12:10
I'm not somebody who likes to stick to the ordinary stuff. | 7:12:10 | 7:12:13
When it comes to food, I like to shake it up. | 7:12:13 | 7:12:15
Meet Bella and Zendaya, who play Cece and Rocky | 7:12:15 | 7:12:18
in the hit Disney dance series, Shake It Up. | 7:12:18 | 7:12:21
The show follows the adventures of our young starlets | 7:12:21 | 7:12:24
trying to rise to fame as back-up dancers on a local show. | 7:12:24 | 7:12:27
-Ladies, welcome to London. BOTH: -Thank you! | 7:12:27 | 7:12:29
Brilliant to have you here. We are here with an American classic. | 7:12:29 | 7:12:32
How important is it to American culture? | 7:12:32 | 7:12:34
I think it's pretty important, everyone grows up on milkshake. | 7:12:34 | 7:12:37
It's a childhood favourite, and even now I'm obsessed with ice cream, | 7:12:37 | 7:12:41
so you can drink your ice cream. | 7:12:41 | 7:12:43
What's your favourite milkshake? | 7:12:43 | 7:12:45
I'm starting to lean towards strawberry now, | 7:12:45 | 7:12:47
so I guess maybe I'm ill? | 7:12:47 | 7:12:49
-Covering all the major food groups then? -Yes! | 7:12:49 | 7:12:51
4th July - also known as Independence Day - | 7:12:51 | 7:12:54
is the date when United States | 7:12:54 | 7:12:56
declared its independence from the UK in 1776. | 7:12:56 | 7:13:00
Or American cousins celebrate by taking a national holiday | 7:13:00 | 7:13:04
and having loads of fun, parades and, of course, fireworks. | 7:13:04 | 7:13:07
It's really about being with your family and barbecue... | 7:13:07 | 7:13:11
And a pool, and just relaxing. | 7:13:11 | 7:13:12
-It's a chilling day? BOTH: -Yes. | 7:13:12 | 7:13:14
I've come up with a few milkshake recipes | 7:13:14 | 7:13:17
which I think are based on American classic food | 7:13:17 | 7:13:19
that you don't normally find in a milkshake. | 7:13:19 | 7:13:22
Would you mind helping me try them out? | 7:13:22 | 7:13:24
-For sure. -Yeah, let's do it! -Let's go. | 7:13:24 | 7:13:26
Now, these recipes are a little bit experimental. | 7:13:26 | 7:13:29
They've never been tried before, they might be disgusting, | 7:13:29 | 7:13:32
but we might discover something fantastic. | 7:13:32 | 7:13:34
First, I thought we'd make milkshake from apple pie. | 7:13:34 | 7:13:38
-Apple pie, of course. -That sounds good. | 7:13:38 | 7:13:41
First of all, we'll start with some apple sauce. | 7:13:41 | 7:13:45
Now some biscuits. | 7:13:45 | 7:13:46
200ml of milk. | 7:13:46 | 7:13:48
Two to three lumps of ice cream. | 7:13:48 | 7:13:51
Cinnamon, ginger biscuit. | 7:13:51 | 7:13:52
It does look really good. | 7:13:52 | 7:13:55
A little splash of apple juice to add to the appley flavour. | 7:13:55 | 7:13:57
For the apple, gotcha. | 7:13:57 | 7:14:00
Give it a whizz. | 7:14:00 | 7:14:01
One glass. | 7:14:04 | 7:14:05
It looks good. | 7:14:08 | 7:14:09
-Artfully, please, artfully. -Oh, wow! | 7:14:12 | 7:14:14
It looks good, but what does it taste like? | 7:14:14 | 7:14:16
Actually good. I like it. | 7:14:19 | 7:14:20
I didn't know what I first thought of the apple taste, | 7:14:20 | 7:14:23
but I like it, and then the cinnamon kicks in. | 7:14:23 | 7:14:25
It adds a little freshness to it. You can taste all the ingredients. | 7:14:25 | 7:14:28
-First one's a winner? -Oh, yeah. | 7:14:28 | 7:14:30
Success! Now let's try something outrageous. | 7:14:30 | 7:14:33
Hot dog milkshake. | 7:14:33 | 7:14:35
-Urgh. -Does that not sound good? | 7:14:35 | 7:14:37
-No! -Do you not have a hot dogs in milkshakes in the States? | 7:14:37 | 7:14:40
-BOTH: -No! | 7:14:40 | 7:14:42
Hot dog, crispy onions, plenty of ketchup and mustard... | 7:14:42 | 7:14:46
White pants - not a good idea. | 7:14:46 | 7:14:48
..lots of milk and, yes, loads of ice-cream. | 7:14:48 | 7:14:52
-It looks like vomit. -Not looking good. -No. | 7:14:53 | 7:14:55
There's a pickle. | 7:14:57 | 7:14:59
That makes it look better, doesn't it? | 7:15:00 | 7:15:02
'Oh dear.' | 7:15:02 | 7:15:04
-Zendaya, you are a vegetarian. -I am a vegetarian. | 7:15:05 | 7:15:07
You are immune from having to try this. | 7:15:07 | 7:15:10
Do it! Do it! | 7:15:10 | 7:15:12
Not liking it. | 7:15:12 | 7:15:13
Good job. | 7:15:13 | 7:15:14
And the verdict is a "Yeeees!" for apple pie, | 7:15:14 | 7:15:18
and a definite "Nooo!" for hot dog - bleugh! | 7:15:18 | 7:15:22
