It's Conor Maynard. Helen and Barney gave me this for Christmas. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
Make sure you stay tuned to find out what it is. Hmm. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
Coming up on today's show... | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
It's time to grab a turkey sandwich | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
and sit back as we revel in the epic year that was 2012 on Blue Peter. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
..as well as catching up with one of this year's superstar guests - | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
the phenomenal Conor Maynard. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
And look out for some familiar faces | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
in our special performance of All I Want For Christmas. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
# More than you could ever know... # | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Hello. Hope you are enjoying the festive period. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
I said I was going to super-size Christmas this year. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
-You have done. -I've got 12 trees instead of one. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Considering the Christmas contacts you do have, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
I didn't get my pony this year for Christmas, what is going on? | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
-Give it time, New Year sales! -Very good. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
As if you could buy a pony in the New Year sales. That'd be amazing. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Anyway, welcome to a very special episode of Blue Peter - | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
our last episode of the year. 2013 is only a few days away. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
This year has gone by so fast. Our feet have hardly touched the ground. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
We've been so busy. We've been all over the country. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
We've been on your screens for 52 weeks of the year. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
We hope that you have enjoyed it and we hope that you have been with us. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
There have been highs, lows, tears, laughs, good times, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
mainly good times. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
We've been blown away with how incredible this year has been. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
We would like you now to sit back | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
and take a look at some of our favourite highlights. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
My favourite has to be learning to fly a loop-the-loop with the Blades. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
What an experience that was. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
-Am I flying the plane at the moment? -You are. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
-My hands are not on the controls. -I'm doing this all by myself? | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
-You are doing this all by yourself. -Oh, my goodness. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
I get goosebumps every time I watch that. I'm so proud of you. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
Good job. We can see a bit more of that later on. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
My highlight has to be all the way back in January | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
when just 21 days into the month, I reached the South Pole. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
It was an ambition that I never even dared dream about. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
This time last year, I was knee deep in snow en route to the South Pole. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
It was a challenge I was undertaking for Sport Relief. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
I had to travel over 500 miles across Antarctica | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
to get all the way to the South Pole itself. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
'I was using three different modes of transport - kite skiing...' | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
If you don't concentrate, you get into a bit of a pickle. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:33
'..cross-country skiing | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
'and, in a world first, a specially adapted bike.' | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
This is so slow. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
We are slower than we are when we're cross-country skiing. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
We had to pull heavy sleds containing our food | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
and equipment over the coldest, windiest, driest place on Earth. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
You have already developed a blister about the size of a 20p piece. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
If we left this on its own, it would just get worse. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
This is the most unpleasant experience of my life. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:05
But it was all worth it and when I finally reached my goal, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
it's a moment I will cherish for ever. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
Really proud of what we've achieved as a team. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
I cannot believe that we are at the South Pole, the bottom of the world. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
Whilst I was completing my expedition to the South Pole, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
a journey of an altogether different nature was also coming to its end. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
Naomi from Live And Deadly | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
joined two giant pandas at their new home in Edinburgh Zoo. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
These rare animals are on an extremely important assignment - | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
to be the first pandas here in the UK to have a baby. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
Pandas by their nature are solitary animals, | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
which means they like to spend time by themselves. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
That's why at the zoo, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
female Sweetie and male panda Sunshine have separate enclosures. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
-You're the panda keeper here at the zoo. -I am. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
Why is it that we haven't had pandas born here in the UK? | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
The last pandas were at London Zoo | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
and unfortunately, they did not breed. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
But now we have a pair so, hopefully, ours will breed. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
But it wasn't just the pandas | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
who won our hearts on the show this year. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
We love animals on Blue Peter. We were even lucky enough | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
to welcome Pudsey the dog with owner Ashleigh to the studio, | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
fresh from having won Britain's Got Talent. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
-I presume it's been the most busy time of your life? -It has! | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
We've been really busy. But we've been having a lot of fun as well. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
We are both just loving the experience. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
In the spring, Blue Peter viewer Ella showed us | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
what life was like for her on her farm during lambing season. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
It's important that we are here to help out with the birth | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
because lots of things can go wrong. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
We don't want to lose either the precious baby or its mother. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
That's it. Clear its nose. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
That's one healthy little lamb. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
This is the miracle of lambing. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
For most of our pets, the future of their breed is assured. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
But not so for all. Naomi went to meet a unique breed of dog. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
Meet the otter hound. Otter hounds have long legs and webbed feet. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
They get their name | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
because they were used to hunt otters in the 18th and 19th centuries. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
In those days, otters were not seen as cute, they were seen as pests. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
This practice ended around 50 years ago | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
and, since then, otter hounds have lessened in numbers, with experts | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
predicting that the breed could be extinct within the next ten years. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:47
But there is hope for this endangered breed. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
I've come to Hereford to meet a woman | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
who is doing everything she can for the otter hound. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
Maria has been breeding otter hound dogs for over 20 years. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
She adores them and even shows them at events like Crufts. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
She currently has seven adult dogs, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
of which four are being used for breeding, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
and I am keen to find out her take on the plight of the otter hound. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
Why do think this breed of dog is so endangered? | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
There have never been many otter hounds around anyway. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
They were not available to the general public | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
until the late 1970s and the early 1980s. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
Up until that time, they were solely a hound used and bred for hunting. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:30
I love these dogs, but I'm more desperate to meet the puppies. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
Let's go. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:35
# Who let the dogs out? # | 0:06:35 | 0:06:36
For the first six weeks of their lives, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
the otter hound pups suckle on milk from their mum. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
But now they are nine weeks old, it is Maria's job to make sure | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
their bellies are full, which is a lot of responsibility. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
-There is a lot of mouths to feed, how much do they eat? -At the moment, | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
they are eating about eight kilos a day of an all-in-one puppy diet. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:57
-They're probably eating their weight in meat? -Getting on for, yes. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
They just get fed once a day? | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
No, they would have this sort of sized meal three times a day. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:11
-And what goes in must come out. -Yes. It's a constant job. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
-There is a lot of poo around in this little pen. -There is. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
I've always fancied having a kennel maid, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
would you like to go and get the shovel? | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
Oh. I'd love to. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
All of these gorgeous puppies now have new homes to go to. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
I get the best jobs. No, don't eat it before I scoop it up. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
But it still does not secure the future of this endangered species. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
Because although 19 puppies seems like a lot, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
most won't be used for breeding. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
All Maria can do is carry on with her good work. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
Hopefully, some of the boys and girls in these two litters | 0:07:51 | 0:07:56
will become parents in the future | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
because we are going to lose the breed | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
if we have not got more being bred. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
Music is another huge passion for us on Blue Peter. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
And throughout the last 12 months, | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
we've welcomed a galaxy of music stars who have performed for you. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
We kicked off the New Year | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
by getting CBBC to do the hump with the Rizzle Kicks. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
# Mama do the hump Mama do the hump hump | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
# Mama won't you please let me do the hump hump | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
# Mama do the hump Mama do the hump hump | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
# Mama won't you please let me do the hump hump | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
# Mama do the hump Mama do the hump hump | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
# Mama won't you please let me do the hump hump... # | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
And the big-name guests kept on coming. Which of these can you name? | 0:08:43 | 0:08:48
Someone who's burst onto the music scene in a big way this year | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
is Conor Maynard. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
# Looking for trouble. But it came looking for me... # | 0:09:47 | 0:09:52
# Turn around... # | 0:09:52 | 0:09:53
And over 135 million views on YouTube. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
So we sent him a little gift to say well done. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
# You say I think we got a problem... # | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
KNOCKING AT DOOR | 0:10:08 | 0:10:09
-Delivery for Conor Maynard. -Thank you. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
"Dear Conor. Sorry we are not there to give you this gift in person, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
"but after a massive year, we wanted to say Merry Christmas. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
"Hope to see you on Blue Peter in 2013. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
"Lots of love, Helen and Barney." | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
That's nice. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
"Sorry, just to say, before you get the present, | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
"you have to answer our questions first. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
"2012 has been an amazing year for you, apart from appearing | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
"on Blue Peter, what have been your top three highlights?" | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
My top three highlights. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
My album going to number one was an incredible highlight. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
Another one would be, for my single Turn Around, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
I got to shoot a video in LA, downtown LA with Ne-Yo. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
My third highlight would be the Olympics. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
I was in the athletics stadium | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
when team GB won three golds in one day. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
I was there during Super Saturday. It was absolutely amazing. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
And yes, I jumped up and down. It was an amazing day, definitely. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
I'd say they were my top three highlights. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
Yes! I get to open a present. Here we go. I'm so excited. Oh... | 0:11:15 | 0:11:20
Another question. "What are you most looking forward to about 2013?" | 0:11:20 | 0:11:26
My album is released in America in 2013, | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
so I am extremely excited about that. Here we go. Last one. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:33
No, it's not, there's another question. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
Helen and Barney, you amazing people, you(!) | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
"What can our audience expect from Conor in 2013?" | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
I'm going to be in a whole bunch of shows in 2013, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
a whole bunch of festivals that I actually get to see you guys at | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
and get to perform live. I get to meet a whole bunch of you as well. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
Thank you for being the Maniacs, as my fans are called. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
I'm really excited about it. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:57
What are the odds? Another question. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
"Is there someone you would love to duet with in the New Year?" | 0:12:01 | 0:12:06
I'm a big fan of Emeli Sande. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
I think she's an incredible writer so if I got to duet with her, | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
I think that would be a lot of fun. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
Next one. Got to be the pre... Another question. Great. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
"If you could be an animal, what would you be?" | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
Well, my favourite animal is a lion. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
I love lions so much, I wanted to change my name to Leo. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
Luckily, my mum told me not to do that. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
But I still love the name, so maybe one day, I might change it to Leo. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
We'll see. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
Oh! Look at that! | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
A lion! | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
I don't know if you guys can see that, but there is a lion. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
I'm going to name it Leo. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
Thank you, Helen and Barney, for the lion, for Leo. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
# You can take my heart | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
# Like a criminal | 0:12:57 | 0:12:58
# Won't you make me believe | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
# I'm the only one? | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
# So grab me by the neck | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
# And don't you ever let go | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
# Mess me up so good until I'm begging for more | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
# You tear me apart | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
# Like an animal | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
# Like an animal, animal... # | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
2012 has been a year like no other. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
Even before the summer holidays began, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
you were all given an extra day off school to help the Queen | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
celebrate her historic Diamond Jubilee and 60 years as our monarch. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
For Blue Peter, DJ Sara Cox went to Buckingham Palace to find out | 0:13:39 | 0:13:44
what Gary Barlow had planned for the celebration concert. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
So, then, Gary, when you got the call from the Palace, | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
asking you to take on such a huge event as this, how did you feel? | 0:13:50 | 0:13:55
It's very exciting. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:56
-Did a bit of you think, "I can't do it." -I think there always is. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:00
Having seen the Golden Jubilee and how successful that was, | 0:14:00 | 0:14:04
I wanted to make it look different and feel different | 0:14:04 | 0:14:08
and feel ten years more improved. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
And how are you going to do that? | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
What we've tried to do with the Diamond Jubilee concert is span it | 0:14:13 | 0:14:17
over 60 years of music. So we have got somebody from every decade. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:22
Another event that took place that weekend was the Flotilla Of Boats | 0:14:22 | 0:14:26
which accompanied the Royal barge on a journey up London's River Thames. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
We joined the Sea Cadets | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
as they made their preparations to take part. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
What other than the wind affects your speed? | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
-Do the ties have an effect? -They can do because of the sandbanks. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
There are a lot on the south coast. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
-So you could actually run aground? -You could, yes. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
You have to be careful. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
I'm sure this crew of cadets would not let that happen. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
In fact, right now I'm counting on their experience | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
because my first job as Sea Cadet Skelton is to climb | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
the 24 metre mast right to the top to let the sails down. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
A bit of a head rush there. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
If the Royalist is going to reach London in four days, | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
all 11 sails need to be used to their best advantage. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
With the sails released, it's straight back down the mast. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:20
Hard on the heels of the Jubilee came a totally unforgettable | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
summer of sport starting with the Euro 2012 football championships. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:28
Excuse me. Can I help you? | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
-Um, yeah, two teas would be great. -Tea? | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
So, Gary... I mean Mr Lineker... Sorry... I love your crisps! | 0:15:35 | 0:15:40
We travelled to Ukraine and Poland | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
to discover more about the host countries. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
And Barney certainly got to bust some moves in the process. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
MUSIC PLAYS | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
Well, that seemed to go OK. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
OK, what's this? What am I doing? | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
What me? My turn? OK? Just spin. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
Spin for all you're worth, Barney boy! | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
Er...should I be doing this? | 0:16:23 | 0:16:25
Er...OK, then. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
Oh, please! Make them stop! Stop! | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
Oh, thank goodness for that! | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
On a more serious note, | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
I learned about a disaster which has had a lasting impact on Ukraine. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:45
26 years ago, an explosion tore through a nuclear power plant | 0:16:45 | 0:16:49
in a place called Chernobyl. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
The disaster had a devastating impact | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
on the people who lived nearby. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
There is so much debate around how many people were affected. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:02
Can you say at all how many people | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
suffered as a result of the explosion? | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
Very difficult to tell. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
According to official data I read, 237 firefighters who took part | 0:17:09 | 0:17:14
in extinguishing the fire, 38 of them died. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:18
In a weird way, I was keen to come here | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
because I was fascinated by what I would see. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
People have discussed and argued about Chernobyl for years | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
and they will do for decades to come. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
But now that I'm here, I can see the scene of a tragedy that caused | 0:17:31 | 0:17:36
so much suffering around the world, I just feel really uncomfortable. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:43
I feel like I'm looking at a car crash and I shouldn't be. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:49
No-one would dispute | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
that the key sporting event of the summer was the Olympics. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
But in the run-up to it, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
every Saturday we followed the Olympic torch as it | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
criss-crossed the country in our special Big Olympic Tour series. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:08
Tens of thousands of you came to see us and I was even allowed to | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
carry the torch as it went through Wolverhampton. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
This is unbelievable, isn't it? This is just... | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
Each torchbearer runs a fifth of a mile before passing | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
the Olympic flame on as it continues its epic journey across the UK. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
Oh, that was such an honour, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
and one of those things I will be talking about | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
for the rest of my life. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:37
The British Olympic team | 0:18:39 | 0:18:40
achieved their best modern performance on the medal table ever. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
What an achievement! | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
And we were lucky enough to welcome Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
and Paralympic gold medallist Sarah Storey to the studio. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
-How do you feel? -It feels amazing. It is just overwhelming, really - | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
-all the support, it's just great. -It is incredible to see what you do. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
And not only that, it's incredible to be here with a gold medal. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
Can we see it? Not many know this, but something magic happens | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
when you win a gold, it attaches itself to your cheek. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
As you lift it, you can't help but go like that. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
Can you remember what each of these is for? | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
Absolutely. The medals are engraved with road cycling track cycling. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
And when I won the second one in each, | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
I put a safety pin on the back. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:21
So that I'd know. So this one was won for the road race | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
-on my final day of competition. -Just look at Sarah's nails. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
-Four gold medals. -And a flag bearer. -Brilliant. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
After a history making summer, we did some making of our own. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:36
Including personalised pencil cases for Amanda from Cover Drive. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:40
I think it's only right that Amanda comes into help me out with this | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
because it is your present after all. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
-So there's your letter. -OK. -It's the final A in your name. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
-Some glue. -Some glue. Do you want me to put it on? -Yes, you do that. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
Fantastic, and just chuck it on there, like that. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:57
There you have it, the finished pencil case. It's as easy as that. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
Plus, edible eyeballs to spook your friends. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
And then because these are horrible, gruesome, diseased eyes, | 0:20:03 | 0:20:08
we're going to paint a little bit of red around the outside of the iris. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
Nice, and you can use that same red | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
to do the veins around the outside of the eye as well. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
If you look, you can see that there is a technique to it | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
because you work outside-in. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
And Halloween botkins - a cross between a bottle and pumpkin! | 0:20:22 | 0:20:27
You should able to find most of the bits that you need around the house. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
Can you put the lights down, please? And... | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
..you should be able to see our ghost glowing in the dark. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
The night of frights itself saw us hotfoot it to a theme park | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
where Barney and I tried to present the show from a rollercoaster. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
You could do a fun-run. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
You could do a sponsored silence. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
You could even do a car boot sale. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
Oh, my goodness. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
-SHE SHOUTS INDISTINCTLY -Whoa-ho! | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
I think Barney is going to be sick. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
I've got that watery thing. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:03
But you would have thought | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
that Barney would have been used to high-octane rides. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
Especially after he fulfilled | 0:21:10 | 0:21:11
his life's ambition to loop-the-loop on a plane. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
-Am I flying the plane at the moment? -You're flying a plane. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
-My hands are not on the control. -I am doing this all by myself? | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
-All by yourself. -Oh, my goodness. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
This is Bernie's first go at a loop. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
OK, start easing back on the stick now. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
That's beautiful, bit more, little bit more. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
Little bit more, little bit more. That's brilliant, keep it like that. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
Keep it like that, keep it coming. That's lovely, Barney. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
-Wow! -Keep it coming, keep it coming. That's it. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:46
Keep it coming a little bit. Relax it down. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:51
That is a loop, Barney. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
That was absolutely incredible. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
In many ways for Barney, his challenge was an emotional tribute | 0:21:57 | 0:22:01
to his aircraft engineer grandfather. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
He worked for British Aerospace, | 0:22:03 | 0:22:05
so I sat with him on so many planes, | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
it was always his ambition to go up in a plane. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
I wish he could have seen what I've just done. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:12
Hopefully, he's looking down from above | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
and he's just seen what you've done. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
For this year's appeal we decided to Go Pyjamas! | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
In support of Children In Need. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
We got you all in your onesies and PJs, | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
with thousands of you across the country | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
throwing them over your clothes | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
and getting sponsored for doing all sorts of crazy things. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:34
Children In Need helps fund this power chair football team. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
It's a growing sport in the UK | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
where two teams of four people control a powerful wheelchair | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
that has a guard, | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
big wheels and a large motor | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
to allow players to move across the pitch at speed. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:55
Emily, what do you love about playing power chair football? | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
Well, you can let your talents out | 0:22:58 | 0:22:59
and you can show people how good you are and what your abilities are. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
It doesn't matter what ability you have, we're all the same. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
So it's just a chance for you to show off? | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
And prove to people that you're not just disabled, | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
you can do other things like other people. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
-'It's time for kick-off.' -Go! | 0:23:13 | 0:23:15
SCREAMING AND SHOUTING | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
I've got it! | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
Yeah! Yes! | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
Yes! | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27 | |
In this game of football everyone's working together | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
and as a result of that we're winning 2-0. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
But just a few of us going pyjamas wasn't enough. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
304 of you helped set a new world record. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
The number of the other people that you had in the line-up was... | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
304, you followed the guidelines, | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
it's a brand-new Guinness world record. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:54
CHEERING | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
I have to say, I actually miss not wearing pyjamas to work, | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
it was a great appeal, I enjoyed myself. We should bring it back. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
It is true that you don't have to do any ironing | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
when you wear pyjamas, you just throw them on and say, | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
-"I'm wearing pyjamas." -It works for everybody. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
But it wasn't just the appeal, we also had fun recently | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
when we invited you guys to come in and take over the show | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
and be our producers. Some had more fun than others. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
The producers thought it would be a good idea | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
for Helen to teach me how to ski. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
-And I fell over a lot. -Have you still got a sore leg? | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
-Yes, right there. She gets you right on the bruise. -It's fine. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
Let's talk about Lapland, that was a great show. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:33
We got pulled on a sled by huskies. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:35
-They were really fast. -I wanted to bring the dogs back. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
But Barney the dog was not up for it at all. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
What about you in that Finnish sauna? | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
That image will stay with me for a while. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
I enjoyed that and it is good for your skin, very healthy. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
And the Christmas show was last week. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:49
-We've done a lot, we'd better start thinking about next year. -We are. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
We're going to kick-off 2013 in a very special way. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
If you got a camera for Christmas | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
or your brother or sister got a smart phone | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
or if you have an old camera laying around, then stick with us. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
We will be teaching you some top photography techniques for 2013. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
We're also going to be making a super-sized animation. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
The star will be someone that you might know. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
It's as if I'm not animated enough. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
We'll find out when we see the finished result. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
All that's left to say | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
is thank you very much for watching Blue Peter this year. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
We couldn't do it without you, we'll see you again in 2013. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
It's nice to go into the office on Mondays | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
and find your letters and e-mails, | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
please keep sending them in. The details are on the website. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
While you're there, you can see a longer version of this gem | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
-when our friends got involved... -SHE COUGHS | 0:25:33 | 0:25:35
..to sing a very special version of All I Want For Christmas. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:39
-Can I start it? -I thought that was you singing. -Play the video. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
