BLUE PETER CBA U192F/01 BSD000000

0:00:000:00:00

.

7:33:137:33:20

It may be cold outside,

7:33:277:33:28

-but things are hotting up here in the Blue Peter studio.

-That's right.

7:33:287:33:31

Daredevil scientist Greg Foot is here,

7:33:317:33:33

with food that will make you sweat, shake, and shiver.

7:33:337:33:36

I find out if I have got what it takes to make it as a top spy

7:33:367:33:38

-on a new series of M.I. High.

-Of course you have.

7:33:387:33:40

And he is tipped for big things in 2014. Elyar Fox is right here

7:33:407:33:43

in the studio performing his debut single, Do It All Over Again.

7:33:437:33:46

That is all coming up on today's live Blue Peter.

7:33:467:33:49

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:34:047:34:07

ALL: Hello!

7:34:077:34:09

How are you doing?

7:34:097:34:10

You're watching Blue Peter, it is a live show, I'm wearing a bowtie.

7:34:107:34:13

It is a special occasion. I have missed you people, I really have.

7:34:137:34:15

-We have missed you.

-Welcome back, Barney.

7:34:157:34:18

-Thank you very much, it is good to be here.

-Don't leave me hanging.

7:34:187:34:20

-Sorry, didn't see that.

-Awkward. You might not be smiling so much

7:34:207:34:23

when you find out about the chilli challenge

7:34:237:34:25

for you and Radzi at the end of the show.

7:34:257:34:27

-I'm not doing that, see you later.

-You are. Stay here.

7:34:277:34:29

You are not going anywhere. It is happening.

7:34:297:34:32

-Yes, my taste buds are literally terrified, Lindsey.

-They should be.

7:34:327:34:35

And later on, I will be giving you a tour

7:34:357:34:37

of the brand-new series of M.I. High.

7:34:377:34:39

Plus, we will be showing you some real-life spy gadgets

7:34:397:34:42

-in the studio, Barney, incredible.

-Can't wait.

7:34:427:34:44

That's songs, spies, seriously hot chillies.

7:34:447:34:46

-What's not to like about today's show?

-That's true.

7:34:467:34:49

-Apart from your hair.

-Stop it!

7:34:497:34:50

Speaking of spies, we want to know,

7:34:507:34:52

if you had to design a secret spy device, what would it be, and why?

7:34:527:34:56

-I would have a watch that fires some kind of disc out of it.

-Oh!

7:34:567:34:59

Like disc golf?

7:34:597:35:01

Like the thing you did last week, yes, some sort of proper, like...

7:35:017:35:04

whatever you fire it into, it then, maps the location,

7:35:047:35:07

-to let others know. Something cool like that.

-It's not very clear.

7:35:077:35:10

You need to go away and think about your spy gadgets!

7:35:107:35:12

I should have thought about it before I came on.

7:35:127:35:14

I'd have a hand-held gadget, I'd press it, just disappear.

7:35:147:35:16

Really nice. Whatever your ideas are, let us know.

7:35:167:35:18

We are live and we want you to get involved.

7:35:187:35:22

-We love when you get in touch.

-We do love when you get in touch.

7:35:227:35:25

So much so that like a proud parent with a big fridge,

7:35:257:35:27

-we stick your stuff up on our big badge wall over here.

-Stop it!

7:35:277:35:30

I got a onesie for Christmas, I am genuinely the most excited

7:35:307:35:33

I have been. I haven't worn onesies before, and I am loving it.

7:35:337:35:36

Abigail knew this, she sensed it, in the Christmas spirit,

7:35:367:35:39

and she has designed onesies for you and me, and...whoever else is here!

7:35:397:35:43

-These two are being so annoying today.

-I have missed being here.

7:35:437:35:47

Don't give me a live TV show, because it is going to go...brilliantly.

7:35:477:35:51

Right, so there you go. Bob skeleton and a radio there.

7:35:517:35:54

This is Radzi's onesie,

7:35:547:35:56

and then you have got Lindsey's onesie at the back,

7:35:567:35:58

which has got musical notes on it, and lots of flags.

7:35:587:36:01

Because we know you like flags.

7:36:017:36:03

I like languages, that is why that is there.

7:36:037:36:05

And my onesie has got Radzi gunged on the sleeve,

7:36:057:36:09

-and Lindsey in my armpit.

-Oh, lovely!

-That is the pits.

7:36:097:36:13

-Lucky me.

-Oh! Don't leave me hanging!

-Take two!

7:36:137:36:17

This is from Chloe.

7:36:177:36:19

We were at the big badge wall. This is the big badge book.

7:36:197:36:22

And if you look inside, it has got all the Blue Peter badges.

7:36:227:36:26

The orange one, the purple one, the sports one, the silver one,

7:36:267:36:29

but the most important one, the gold one!

7:36:297:36:31

-We all want the gold one.

-Oh, yes.

7:36:317:36:33

And it's not just post and e-mails you have been sending in.

7:36:337:36:35

Check this out, it is from Jasmine and Harry from Buckinghamshire.

7:36:357:36:38

And they have changed the Blue Peter theme

7:36:387:36:41

into a jazzy song called Blues Peter.

7:36:417:36:42

Very good. We absolutely love this.

7:36:427:36:45

Their grandad filmed it, and best of all,

7:36:457:36:47

it is on my favourite instrument, the saxophone. Take a look at this.

7:36:477:36:50

JAZZY BLUE PETER THEME

7:36:507:36:54

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:37:047:37:07

-Take a bow, guys.

-So good.

-Absolutely brilliant.

7:37:077:37:09

I love that Jasmine's name is actually jazz-min.

7:37:097:37:12

-How cool does that look? Brilliant, thanks very much.

-I like that.

7:37:127:37:14

Now, we know you love it when we go behind the scenes.

7:37:147:37:17

So when I got the chance to do just that at the brand-new

7:37:177:37:19

series of M.I. High, I jumped at the chance. You are going to love this.

7:37:197:37:23

Linds, Barney, four words for you. Oh, yeah? Spy in the making.

7:37:237:37:27

Today is a very exciting day.

7:37:367:37:38

I am set for a brand-new series of M.I. High.

7:37:387:37:41

M.I. High is set in a school that has got a top secret.

7:37:437:37:47

There are more than just teachers and pupils here, and it is not

7:37:477:37:49

just their homework that MI9 agents are battling with.

7:37:497:37:52

So, here I am at the M.I. High spy base. How cool is this?

7:37:557:38:00

But, I have work to do.

7:38:007:38:02

I am on a mission to find out what skills

7:38:027:38:04

I will need to make it as a great spy.

7:38:047:38:07

I wonder who I could ask.

7:38:077:38:09

Sam, Oyiza and Oscar, or better known as Agent Dan,

7:38:177:38:19

Agent Aneisha and Agent Tom.

7:38:197:38:21

What has the new series got to offer us, do you think?

7:38:217:38:24

-Are we going to see more action?

-Definitely.

-More baddies?

7:38:247:38:27

-More baddies, more action, more fighting.

-More saving the world?

7:38:277:38:30

More saving the world.

7:38:307:38:32

What are your characters' strongest skills, do you think?

7:38:327:38:34

Practicality in the field.

7:38:347:38:36

Not too much into the technical side of things

7:38:367:38:39

as much as he is going out there and doing it.

7:38:397:38:42

Aneisha joined as the master of disguise, so she can tell

7:38:427:38:45

when something's not right. She's really good at reading people.

7:38:457:38:48

Tom is an electronics genius.

7:38:487:38:51

Really, he's the main one, to be honest.

7:38:517:38:54

-He's modest, as well, isn't he?

-Very modest! Very handsome!

7:38:547:38:58

I'd love to be a spy.

7:38:597:39:01

-We've got some challenges. Are you up for it?

-ALL: Yes.

7:39:017:39:04

That's what I'm talking about. The first one is on the screen.

7:39:047:39:07

Radzi, I hear you want to be a spy.

7:39:077:39:09

You're going to have to be able to crack codes. In the following story, there is a coded message. Crack it.

7:39:097:39:14

'So the spy master is saying'

7:39:147:39:15

somewhere in the text on the screen there is a hidden message.

7:39:157:39:19

'The answer is in there somewhere.'

7:39:197:39:21

-What are our thoughts, guys?

-I have no idea.

7:39:217:39:24

You kind of think it's going to be like the first letter of one word and the second letter.

7:39:247:39:29

Oh, OK, go on. What about if it was the last letter of a sentence? T-Y-Y.

7:39:297:39:36

That doesn't make sense. We've got to get this.

7:39:367:39:38

-Is intelligence important to being a spy?

-Apparently not!

7:39:387:39:41

LAUGHTER

7:39:417:39:43

-Um...

-What if it was the first letter in a sentence?

7:39:437:39:48

Blue Peter love...

7:39:487:39:50

-S...

-Loves.

7:39:507:39:52

-M-I...

-Oh, we all know what it's going to be.

7:39:527:39:56

-What are we thinking?

-Blue Peter loves M.I. High.

7:39:567:39:59

-That's sweet, that.

-High-five!

7:39:597:40:01

'Code cracked. Mission one complete.'

7:40:017:40:04

Boom! Job done.

7:40:047:40:06

Radzi, you did better than I expected,

7:40:067:40:08

although I'm not sure how you would have coped without my team.

7:40:087:40:11

All agents need to be able to solve problems.

7:40:117:40:13

I have two water carriers, one of five litres and one of three.

7:40:137:40:17

You need to fill one of them with four litres of water.

7:40:177:40:20

Use as much water as you like and good luck.

7:40:207:40:23

How are going to do it?

7:40:237:40:25

'This one is tricky.'

7:40:257:40:26

Exactly four litres from three- and five-litre bottles

7:40:267:40:30

without a four-litre bottle.

7:40:307:40:31

'We've got some serious spy sums to do to get this one right.'

7:40:317:40:35

What now? 'How would you do it?'

7:40:357:40:38

That is better. Smart.

7:40:387:40:41

Oh, no! It's gone pear-shaped.

7:40:417:40:44

I've got it, I've got it, I've got it.

7:40:447:40:45

-No, no, no.

-Stop, stop, stop.

7:40:457:40:47

-You put one litre from here into there. Fill it with three litres.

-Yes!

-Wa-hey!

7:40:477:40:52

-Done.

-Yes! OK.

7:40:527:40:55

'Mission two complete.' Job done.

7:40:567:40:58

'Training is going well,'

7:40:587:40:59

but now it's time to get some top tips from M.I. High's newest recruit.

7:40:597:41:03

'Julia plays Keri, a quick-learning high-kicking super-spying agent.'

7:41:037:41:07

-What can you tell us about Keri?

-Well, there's lots of secrets to Keri, so I can't say much.

7:41:077:41:12

She is extremely friendly, bubbly and a bit ditzy!

7:41:127:41:16

Like yourself, I'd like to be a spy. Have I got what it takes?

7:41:167:41:19

I think you definitely do.

7:41:197:41:20

If you just pick up the sneaking-around skills,

7:41:207:41:22

I think you'll be all right.

7:41:227:41:24

'So, I've disguised myself as the janitor.'

7:41:247:41:27

All right, so yellow is a bit bright to blend in,

7:41:297:41:32

but everyone's too busy filming today, anyway,

7:41:327:41:34

and that means I can get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look

7:41:347:41:37

at the new series.

7:41:377:41:39

Once again, the school is under threat

7:41:407:41:42

and it's only MI9 standing in the way.

7:41:427:41:44

They did not look too friendly.

7:41:497:41:51

Uh-oh. We've got company.

7:41:537:41:55

And action.

7:42:007:42:01

And that is what happens when you mess with spies.

7:42:147:42:17

What a day that was.

7:42:197:42:21

Thank you so much everybody at M.I. High. Their series has started.

7:42:217:42:25

You can catch it on CBBC every single Monday at 5:30.

7:42:257:42:29

If you did miss the first episode, go on to CBBC iPlayer.

7:42:297:42:33

Plus, when I was filming,

7:42:337:42:34

I also filmed an exclusive backstage diary

7:42:347:42:37

and if you want to see that,

7:42:377:42:39

go onto the Blue Peter website and click Blue Peter backstage.

7:42:397:42:43

Many of the spy gadgets you see in films

7:42:437:42:46

or on TV programmes are inspired by the real thing

7:42:467:42:48

and we've been lucky enough to have them in the studio.

7:42:487:42:52

Everyone knows I love gadgets and, up until today, I thought I'd seen

7:42:527:42:55

pretty much all there was to see, but I'm wrong.

7:42:557:42:58

This is Mandy Mason, a curator at the Imperial War Museum. Hi.

7:42:587:43:02

What have you brought? It's intriguing. It is nothing I've seen before.

7:43:027:43:05

-What is this down here?

-This little thing is a camera.

7:43:057:43:08

It's a very tiny camera made during the Second World War by Kodak

7:43:087:43:13

and they were making these miniature cameras for the use of spies, secret agents.

7:43:137:43:18

They are called matchbox cameras.

7:43:187:43:20

When spies were sent out with these cameras, they were given

7:43:207:43:22

special covers so it would look just like a matchbox.

7:43:227:43:26

They were given different covers and designs, depending on which country they were spying in.

7:43:267:43:30

It's very clever. Was this actually used?

7:43:307:43:32

This one was used by an American spy at the end of the war.

7:43:327:43:35

Camouflage is a very important thing if you're a spy.

7:43:357:43:38

You don't want people to know you or your gadgets are there.

7:43:387:43:40

They have used some pretty creative ways to hide gadgets over the years.

7:43:407:43:45

Yes, they were hidden in all sorts of things.

7:43:457:43:47

One of the most unusual,

7:43:477:43:48

they had small explosive devices, about so big, called tyre-bursters.

7:43:487:43:53

They hid these tiny explosives in animal poo, or fake animal poo, sometimes.

7:43:537:43:59

So horse poo, mule poo, and they put them on roads and bridges,

7:43:597:44:03

anywhere where there would be a lot of enemy traffic.

7:44:037:44:06

If an enemy vehicle was to drive over one of these, the pressure

7:44:067:44:08

would set off the explosive and burst the vehicle tyres,

7:44:087:44:11

-basically stopping it from going anywhere. So very clever.

-I love it.

7:44:117:44:14

That's one of my favourite things about being a spy -

7:44:147:44:16

you get gadgets and you can hide stuff in animal poo.

7:44:167:44:19

Moving on, we have some feet made of rubber.

7:44:197:44:22

They are a gadget and it's like nothing I've seen before

7:44:227:44:25

and they are very clever, as well.

7:44:257:44:27

These rubber feet were made for the use of agents operating in the Far East,

7:44:277:44:30

where they might be landing on beaches in the dead of night.

7:44:307:44:33

The idea was you'd strap these on under your normal shoes

7:44:337:44:36

or boots and when the agents landed on the beach

7:44:367:44:39

and stirred and walked, it would leave a footprint

7:44:397:44:41

that would looked like a normal bare foot,

7:44:417:44:43

so the sort of footprints left by somebody who is a native to that island,

7:44:437:44:47

rather than a giveaway footprint of a big British Army boot.

7:44:477:44:50

How clever is that? It's brilliant. I want a pair of those.

7:44:507:44:52

If you are going to be a secret agent,

7:44:527:44:54

you'll need a catalogue to find the devices you need to do your job.

7:44:547:44:58

This is said catalogue, with lots of different things.

7:44:587:45:01

One thing I spotted was the itching powder.

7:45:017:45:03

Anyone who's been to a joke shop knows what that is,

7:45:037:45:06

but I was surprised to see it being used by a secret agent.

7:45:067:45:08

Some of the inventions were very technical and complex.

7:45:087:45:11

Some were very basic so, as you say, some were given itching powder.

7:45:117:45:16

The idea was you would try to put it into enemy clothes and uniforms.

7:45:167:45:20

There was one account where somebody managed to put some through a laundry

7:45:207:45:24

into some German submariners' uniforms.

7:45:247:45:27

If you are in a submarine, you're away underwater,

7:45:277:45:30

you can't change your clothes, you can't wash very easily,

7:45:307:45:33

so it would be uncomfortable to have some nasty, itching painful skin.

7:45:337:45:36

Is that what Mucuna is, is that the ingredient?

7:45:367:45:39

Mucuna is the name of the plant and it was the seeds from this plant

7:45:397:45:42

that made the really nasty itching powder they used.

7:45:427:45:44

You've no idea how much fun I'm having right now.

7:45:447:45:46

Gadgets and itching powder, I'm loving this. Mandy, thank so much for coming in.

7:45:467:45:49

If you fancy the idea of becoming a secret agent,

7:45:497:45:52

why not head to the IWM North throughout February?

7:45:527:45:54

You've got lots of activities,

7:45:547:45:56

so that you can try your hand at being a secret agent.

7:45:567:45:58

Don't forget to give us your ideas for your spy gadgets -

7:45:587:46:01

that's the Blue Peter website. Mandy, thank you very much.

7:46:017:46:05

Ugh, gadgets hidden in poo, that is disgusting.

7:46:057:46:08

Though kind of ingenious. I like it.

7:46:087:46:10

Now, from the secrets of being a spy

7:46:107:46:12

to the secrets of seriously hot food.

7:46:127:46:14

We know you love growing your own vegetables.

7:46:147:46:16

Have a look at this. It's from Cameron.

7:46:167:46:18

He is 11, from Manchester.

7:46:187:46:19

It's a photo of him in his garden, growing chillies.

7:46:197:46:22

Well done, Cameron, good job.

7:46:227:46:24

Speaking of chillies, I got to go to a chilli farm in the UK

7:46:247:46:27

a few weeks ago and find out what makes them so fiery.

7:46:277:46:30

If you've ever eaten anything hot, you know how that feels.

7:46:317:46:34

But there are two different kinds of hot.

7:46:347:46:36

This steaming cuppa is what we'd call hot hot,

7:46:367:46:39

which means it can physically burn you.

7:46:397:46:41

But the other type of heat is spicy hot

7:46:417:46:44

and that comes from these little bad boys - chillies.

7:46:447:46:47

Chillies have been grown and used in cooking for centuries

7:46:477:46:50

and people are now finding ways to grow them hotter and hotter.

7:46:507:46:53

Even though they seem exotic, loads of chillies are grown in the UK

7:46:537:46:57

and Alex is one of the few farmers cultivating super-hot chillies.

7:46:577:47:01

Today, I've come to meet him on his farm.

7:47:017:47:04

Alex, what's the deal with these chillies,

7:47:047:47:06

because they are not that hot to hold, but to taste...

7:47:067:47:09

They are quite hot. Oh! That is really hot.

7:47:097:47:14

My lip has gone a bit numb.

7:47:147:47:16

My mouth feels like it's on fire and I feel I can want to cry.

7:47:167:47:18

On the outside of the skin, there is no capsaicin.

7:47:187:47:20

Capsaicin is what makes them hot, that's oil.

7:47:207:47:23

It affects your pain receptors in your mouth.

7:47:237:47:24

It's not physically hot, it won't burn you,

7:47:247:47:27

it won't burn your skin, but it tricks your mind

7:47:277:47:29

into thinking there's something very hot in your mouth.

7:47:297:47:31

So it's nothing to do with the seeds,

7:47:317:47:33

it's to do with the liquid in the chilli that makes it really hot?

7:47:337:47:36

That's right. The seeds are heatless,

7:47:367:47:38

but the hotter part of the chilli is the bit that holds the seeds in place.

7:47:387:47:42

-In the middle.

-The white pith stuff.

7:47:427:47:44

-Actually, it's cooled off now. Shall we go find a really hot one?

-Why not?

7:47:447:47:48

'The amount of capsaicin in a chilli determines how hot it is.'

7:47:487:47:51

We measure that on the Scoville scale.

7:47:517:47:54

A chilli with a Scoville score of one means you need to add

7:47:547:47:57

one drop of water to one drop of chilli extract

7:47:577:47:59

before you can no longer takes the chilli.

7:47:597:48:01

The scale goes all the way up to

7:48:017:48:03

a tongue-torching two million Scoville units,

7:48:037:48:05

which means the hottest chillies in the world

7:48:057:48:07

would need two million drops of water

7:48:077:48:09

before you couldn't taste just one drop of chilli extract.

7:48:097:48:12

'And you'd be back to zero heat.'

7:48:127:48:15

How super-spicy are these chillies?

7:48:157:48:17

These 7-Pot Habaneros

7:48:177:48:18

are over one million Scoville heat units.

7:48:187:48:21

Just one teaspoon of extract from this chilli would take

7:48:217:48:24

5,000 litres of water in order to dilute it to zero heat.

7:48:247:48:28

-OK, Lindsey, here is 5,000 litres of water.

-That is nuts.

7:48:287:48:33

So it takes this much water to cancel out

7:48:337:48:36

the teaspoon of one of these chillies?

7:48:367:48:38

-That's right.

-So they really are very spicy?

7:48:387:48:41

They are very spicy and that's why we recommend wearing gloves.

7:48:417:48:44

If you got that on your finger and touched your eye, or something,

7:48:447:48:47

it's not a good idea? Surely you can't use this much water

7:48:477:48:50

every time you want to measure a chilli, so how is that done?

7:48:507:48:54

These days, it's done totally differently, in laboratories.

7:48:547:48:57

Right. Better get to the lab.

7:48:577:48:58

With my extreme-strength chilli picked,

7:48:587:49:01

it's time to measure exactly how hot it is,

7:49:017:49:02

and no-one is better qualified than plant scientist Andrew Dukes.

7:49:027:49:05

He is the man that chilli farmers send their super-hot chillies to.

7:49:057:49:08

He's measured two of the hottest chillies in the world

7:49:087:49:11

in the ongoing search for record breakers.

7:49:117:49:13

Andy, how do we go about measuring the spiciness of this chilli?

7:49:137:49:17

What we need to do is separate the chilli into its component parts.

7:49:177:49:22

To do that, we use a process called liquid chromatography.

7:49:227:49:26

That might sound science-y,

7:49:267:49:28

but, actually, it's a way of using liquid to separate

7:49:287:49:31

the different chemicals in something,

7:49:317:49:33

like the ink in these pens.

7:49:337:49:35

Andy, what is this?

7:49:357:49:37

This tube is our piece of paper

7:49:377:49:39

and we are pumping this liquid through the tube

7:49:397:49:43

and that's carrying our chilli sample

7:49:437:49:45

and separating the different chemicals.

7:49:457:49:48

The same way as the colour was running up the paper,

7:49:487:49:51

this time, the chilli is running up the tubes, is that right?

7:49:517:49:55

And that's how we can separate all the different parts

7:49:557:49:57

of the chilli out and find its spice factor.

7:49:577:49:59

-Shall we get a real chilli, then?

-Let's go for it.

-Let's do it.

7:49:597:50:02

'So now we just need to prepare the chillies. Simple, right?'

7:50:027:50:07

'Yeah, it really gets up your nose.'

7:50:087:50:11

Carry on!

7:50:117:50:13

COUGHING

7:50:137:50:14

'And your throat...and your eyes.'

7:50:147:50:17

Goggles are steaming up.

7:50:177:50:19

'Basically, it's just really hot.' Straight up the nose.

7:50:197:50:22

'Well, I've helped Andrew with the strength test,

7:50:227:50:25

'but Barney and Radzi are going to have to wait for those results.'

7:50:257:50:28

Thanks, it's been a really cool day. I say "cool"...

7:50:287:50:31

Chilli!

7:50:317:50:33

No? OK.

7:50:337:50:36

I can still feel my mouth burning.

7:50:377:50:39

What we are about to do is a little bit dangerous.

7:50:397:50:41

It's called the Blue Peter Chilli Challenge,

7:50:417:50:43

so please do not try this at home.

7:50:437:50:45

-Here to help us today is daredevil scientist Greg Foot. Hello, Greg!

-CHEERING

7:50:457:50:51

Yay! Thank you so much for being here today.

7:50:517:50:54

-You're welcome. I'm looking forward to this.

-I'm excited.

7:50:547:50:57

I'm nervous for you two.

7:50:577:50:58

You have toured all over the UK with live science shows

7:50:587:51:01

and you love anything that mixes science and adrenaline.

7:51:017:51:03

Absolutely.

7:51:037:51:05

Which is why it's perfect you are here today.

7:51:057:51:07

Tell us a little bit about the challenge they are about to do.

7:51:077:51:10

In your video, when he went to the chilli farm

7:51:107:51:13

you found the chemical inside the chilli that makes a chilli hot,

7:51:137:51:17

makes it feel like it's burning, is capsaicin.

7:51:177:51:19

The more capsaicin you have in a chilli, the hotter it is.

7:51:197:51:23

I've got three different chillies. They go from mild to wild.

7:51:237:51:27

Mild to wild, I like it.

7:51:277:51:29

-Are you guys ready for this?

-Nope.

-Er... Ready as we'll ever be.

7:51:297:51:33

I'm nervous. Shall we start with chilli one? Don't try at home.

7:51:337:51:36

We've got gloves on. That's how hot these chillies are.

7:51:367:51:39

-You've got to have gloves on to taste them.

-Absolutely.

7:51:397:51:43

The first one is a jalapeno.

7:51:437:51:45

Jalapeno is what you get on your pizza

7:51:457:51:47

if you have a hot and spicy pizza,

7:51:477:51:48

but they are normally only around 2,500 to 5,000 Scovilles,

7:51:487:51:52

which you talked about in your film. This one, however,

7:51:527:51:54

is a nice, whopping, slightly punchy 30,000 Scovilles.

7:51:547:52:00

-We're starting low.

-That is quite spicy, isn't it?

7:52:007:52:02

We laugh in the face of 30,000 Scovilles!

7:52:027:52:05

No time like the present. Cheers.

7:52:057:52:07

-Oh, no.

-That's a good bite, Radzi.

-I went in far too strong.

-You did.

7:52:087:52:13

-How does it feel?

-It's a long race.

7:52:137:52:15

The tongue has got very hot, very quickly.

7:52:157:52:17

Let's have a look at the tongue,

7:52:177:52:19

because this is where the action is happening.

7:52:197:52:21

Here is your tongue, it's quite rough. It's lumps and bumps.

7:52:217:52:26

It's got big bumps at the back and little bumps at the front.

7:52:267:52:29

Each of those bumps is called papilla. They're called papillae.

7:52:297:52:33

If you zoom in, this is one from the side.

7:52:337:52:36

You get gaps down the side, these pits. These are your taste buds.

7:52:367:52:41

Each of these green lines, they are neurons going to the brain.

7:52:417:52:44

They send signals about what you are eating to the brain.

7:52:447:52:47

There are receptors inside working out whether it is salt,

7:52:477:52:50

sweet, hot or cold.

7:52:507:52:53

The thing about the capsaicin chemical,

7:52:537:52:55

as these guys are now feeling, is it does something to the receptors,

7:52:557:52:58

so even if you are eating something cold, it feels hot.

7:52:587:53:01

Greg, what you are trying to say is the spice they're feeling

7:53:017:53:04

-is just in the head.

-It's all in your head, boys.

-It's in my mouth!

7:53:047:53:07

Speaking of which, let's get on to chilli...

7:53:077:53:10

I have given this the big one, all day, and I'm regretting that.

7:53:107:53:13

-Radzi, you're sweating.

-I bet you are. This is the second one.

7:53:137:53:16

This is Scotch Bonnet. We should say, don't try this at home.

7:53:167:53:19

This is 200,000 Scovilles.

7:53:197:53:22

We've already stepped up the spice a lot here. Let's go.

7:53:227:53:25

Oh! Oh, no.

7:53:267:53:29

Another massive bite from Radzi. That was impressive.

7:53:317:53:35

How are you doing?

7:53:357:53:36

-Oh.

-Oh, Radzi, are you crying?

7:53:367:53:38

That has got some venom to it, that.

7:53:387:53:40

I think we're getting a sweaty nose on, as well, from you guys. Yes.

7:53:407:53:44

This is a natural reaction from the body.

7:53:447:53:47

Your brain thinks you're actually burning.

7:53:477:53:49

-It doesn't think, it knows!

-Remember, it's all in the head.

7:53:497:53:53

It thinks you are physically burning.

7:53:537:53:55

It kick-starts all your bodily responses,

7:53:557:53:58

your cooling mechanisms, and that is what sweating is.

7:53:587:54:00

Also, you've gone a little bit red.

7:54:007:54:03

-I'm genuinely sweating.

-That is your pain response kicking in.

7:54:037:54:08

Your body is flooded with endorphins and adrenaline

7:54:087:54:10

-and that's why you're flushing red.

-Can I say that was...

7:54:107:54:14

-LAUGHTER

-Barney's gone.

-Is he?!

7:54:147:54:17

-Oh, he's back.

-Barney's back.

7:54:177:54:20

I think... Who's feeling brave?

7:54:207:54:22

-Aargh!

-I need a drink.

7:54:227:54:25

-OK.

-I'm going to do it.

7:54:257:54:28

-OK, let's do this.

-This top one is a real top one. OK, are you ready?

7:54:287:54:32

Barney is trying to leave the studio.

7:54:327:54:34

This is the one that you tested and the results are in.

7:54:347:54:38

910,000 Scovilles.

7:54:387:54:41

-It just gets worse, it doesn't get any better.

-This is a lot worse.

7:54:417:54:45

This really is going to be spicy.

7:54:457:54:47

-I don't mean this gets worse, that got worse!

-Ready?

7:54:477:54:49

-Barns, are you in?

-Come on, Barney, we're in this together, mate.

7:54:497:54:52

A little nibble. Don't take much. Just take a little nibble.

7:54:527:54:55

Oh, just a nibble. Don't do too much.

7:54:557:54:57

OK, this is close to 1,000,000.

7:54:597:55:00

I could give you water, but water would not help at all.

7:55:007:55:03

What you guys need is milk. There you go.

7:55:037:55:06

Capsaicin, it's a fatty molecule.

7:55:067:55:09

Think about when you are cleaning your pots and pans at home,

7:55:097:55:13

if it's got fat on there, water does nothing.

7:55:137:55:16

You need something to wash it away. That's what the milk does.

7:55:167:55:19

-Protein in the milk helps wash it away.

-Is it helping at all?

7:55:197:55:21

Barney has left the studio. Radzi looks like he's about to cry.

7:55:217:55:26

It's like having an armband in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

7:55:267:55:28

I can smell it. Oh!

7:55:287:55:30

There you go, it is all in the head and it's down to that capsaicin.

7:55:307:55:33

-Don't try it at home.

-We should say a well done to the boys for even giving that a go.

7:55:337:55:37

Greg, thank you so much for being here.

7:55:377:55:40

This is the quietest Barney and Radzi have been all day.

7:55:407:55:43

You can come again!

7:55:437:55:45

Now, at the beginning of the show,

7:55:457:55:47

we asked you to let us know what spy device you would design and why.

7:55:477:55:52

Come with me, guys, come on, you can bring the milk.

7:55:527:55:54

Loads of you have been sending in comments.

7:55:547:55:57

We are going to read a few out.

7:55:577:55:59

I will start, considering Barney and Radzi are struggling to speak.

7:55:597:56:03

Don't cry, guys, you can do it.

7:56:037:56:05

The first is from Red Musical Sea Horse,

7:56:057:56:07

who says, "I would make a super, awesome potato,

7:56:077:56:10

"so that when your enemies are trying to find you,

7:56:107:56:12

"the potato could suck you in so you're hidden."

7:56:127:56:15

A magic potato. I like that a lot.

7:56:157:56:16

-Are you able to read, Radzi?

-I'm going to read.

7:56:167:56:19

Magenta Gentle B... Puppy says... Can't read!

7:56:197:56:22

"My gadget would be a newspaper which, when you pointed it

7:56:227:56:25

"at someone, could read his or her mind,

7:56:257:56:27

"because people would think I'm a normal person reading a newspaper."

7:56:277:56:30

Very nice.

7:56:307:56:32

-Are you going to? No, Barney is not even going to attempt it.

-LAUGHTER

7:56:327:56:36

Topaz Smiley says, "I would make earmuffs that had

7:56:367:56:39

"a wireless radio inside so I could speak to my spy agents."

7:56:397:56:43

Very nice. Loads of good ideas. Thank you so much.

7:56:437:56:46

Before we finish, we have time to tell you what's on next week's show.

7:56:467:56:51

We are going to be joined by CBBC stars Sam and Mark

7:56:517:56:54

as they tell us all about their next series of Friday Wind-ups.

7:56:547:56:57

It's going to be good.

7:56:577:56:59

BARNEY: Um, also, the big plane might make it.

7:57:017:57:03

I might not make it,

7:57:037:57:05

but will the big wing make it onto the big plane?

7:57:057:57:08

-Um... Right.

-I would say calcium is very good for the bones.

7:57:107:57:13

Something that is good for the soul...

7:57:137:57:15

It's time to find out about our next performer, Elyar Fox.

7:57:157:57:17

Let's find out a little bit about him.

7:57:177:57:19

# Ah, check it out. #

7:57:217:57:23

Dubbed the British Justin Bieber,

7:57:237:57:24

Elyar Fox became an internet phenomenon from his bedroom.

7:57:247:57:27

He clocked up over 14 million hits online

7:57:277:57:30

before being snapped up by a record label to record his own music.

7:57:307:57:34

He's just finished a successful tour with boy-band sensation Union J

7:57:347:57:37

and has been working on his debut album

7:57:377:57:39

with some of pop music's biggest songwriters and producers.

7:57:397:57:42

This week, Elyar releases his debut single.

7:57:427:57:44

Earlier on in the Blue Peter studio,

7:57:467:57:48

when I was having a much happier time,

7:57:487:57:50

I managed to get together with Elyar

7:57:507:57:52

and we recorded our own version of One Direction's...

7:57:527:57:55

Yeah, they recorded One Direction's Story Of My Life. It's all online.

7:57:557:57:58

Make sure you check it out. But now it's time to hear from Elyar Fox.

7:58:017:58:04

It's a live acoustic version of his debut single. Let's hear it.

7:58:047:58:08

# Hey!

7:58:117:58:12

# Check it out

7:58:147:58:16
