Coming up on today's live Blue Peter, | 6:48:58 | 6:49:01
as the new Spider-Man film hits the cinema screens, | 6:49:01 | 6:49:03
we've some dangerous and deadly spiders here in our studio. | 6:49:03 | 6:49:07
CBBC's Dick and Dom give us a marvellous treat | 6:49:09 | 6:49:12
as they reveal their all-time favourite story book. | 6:49:12 | 6:49:15
And prepare to be wowed by their amazing stunts - | 6:49:16 | 6:49:20
the UK's freestyle scooter champions are here to perform for you. | 6:49:20 | 6:49:23
APPLAUSE | 6:49:41 | 6:49:44
-Hello. -Hi. Hello, welcome to the show. | 6:49:44 | 6:49:46
It's live, it's interactive and, as you can see, | 6:49:46 | 6:49:48
Team Razor are warming up to give you a display | 6:49:48 | 6:49:50
you're not going to want to miss. Don't go anywhere. | 6:49:50 | 6:49:52
Cool, aren't they? Hands up who's been to the cinema lately. | 6:49:52 | 6:49:55
If you've been, you'll know the Amazing Spider-Man movie | 6:49:55 | 6:49:57
has just been released. That's not my opinion - | 6:49:57 | 6:49:59
it's called that, isn't it? | 6:49:59 | 6:50:01
That is its actual title. It follows the story of Peter Parker, | 6:50:01 | 6:50:04
who's bitten by a radioactive spider | 6:50:04 | 6:50:06
and that's how he got his super powers. | 6:50:06 | 6:50:08
Actually, it's true because these super powers exist in real life. | 6:50:08 | 6:50:13
Yes, we are about to introduce you to three big furry, scary spiders. | 6:50:13 | 6:50:19
You might want to hide behind your cushions now. | 6:50:19 | 6:50:22
I might stay here for this one. | 6:50:22 | 6:50:23
No need to worry because we have an expert handler with us. | 6:50:23 | 6:50:27
It is Crocodile Joe. Now, Crocodile Joe, | 6:50:27 | 6:50:29
your nickname has crocodile in the title, | 6:50:29 | 6:50:31
-but you know about spiders, too, don't you? -I certainly do. | 6:50:31 | 6:50:34
I certainly do. I spent a lot of years in Australia | 6:50:34 | 6:50:37
researching and studying tarantulas of the Australian rainforest. | 6:50:37 | 6:50:42
So you are well positioned to handle the ladies we have in these boxes? | 6:50:42 | 6:50:46
I certainly am. I certainly am. | 6:50:46 | 6:50:47
OK. Who are you going to introduce us to first? | 6:50:47 | 6:50:50
-This is a Chile rose tarantula. -Wow. -She's actually called Tilly. | 6:50:50 | 6:50:53
We mentioned there that spiders have super powers, a bit like Spider-man. | 6:50:53 | 6:50:58
How is Tilly similar to the superhero? | 6:50:58 | 6:51:00
Well, she's very similar to Spider-Man | 6:51:00 | 6:51:02
because this girl actually spins silk, just like Spider-Man. | 6:51:02 | 6:51:06
Now, this one doesn't actually spin a web like Spider-man. | 6:51:06 | 6:51:11
-He actually spins silk to catch his prey. -OK. | 6:51:11 | 6:51:14
This one will actually eat all kinds of little insects | 6:51:14 | 6:51:19
to little mice, all kinds of little animals. | 6:51:19 | 6:51:22
It must be a strong web to catch those sorts of animals. | 6:51:22 | 6:51:25
-It's actually stronger than steel. -What?! | 6:51:25 | 6:51:29
It's stronger than steel. | 6:51:29 | 6:51:31
If you can get a piece of steel as wide as a web, | 6:51:31 | 6:51:34
then the steel would break before the web. | 6:51:34 | 6:51:37
-Is she poisonous? -She's mildly venomous, | 6:51:37 | 6:51:39
but it's almost like a bee sting. | 6:51:39 | 6:51:42
But she does have two centimetre-long fangs | 6:51:42 | 6:51:46
which she'll pump into her prey. | 6:51:46 | 6:51:48
My heart is beating so fast! | 6:51:48 | 6:51:51
You've done really well. | 6:51:51 | 6:51:54
-Nice to meet you, Tilly. -OK. Moving on to the next one, | 6:51:54 | 6:51:57
so we're talking about superpowers, things related to the super hero. | 6:51:57 | 6:52:00
How about our second tarantula in here? | 6:52:00 | 6:52:03
Well, this one, have a look at him. He's a red knee tarantula. | 6:52:03 | 6:52:06
Ah, red knee, so red being the same colour | 6:52:06 | 6:52:07
as the costume that Spider-Man wears? | 6:52:07 | 6:52:09
Absolutely, and red's for danger. As we know, red's for danger. | 6:52:09 | 6:52:13
-Look at him. -He's cool. | 6:52:13 | 6:52:16
He's absolutely cool. You can't really hold this one | 6:52:16 | 6:52:19
because it flicks its hairs and as it's flicking its hairs, | 6:52:19 | 6:52:24
those hairs are going to the back of your throat, | 6:52:24 | 6:52:27
into your eyes and on your skin, makes you really itchy, | 6:52:27 | 6:52:31
and the fascination with tarantulas is they can hang upside down | 6:52:31 | 6:52:34
and they can hold 170 times their own body weight, | 6:52:34 | 6:52:40
that's an equivalent of Spider-Man holding 170 people | 6:52:40 | 6:52:45
-while hanging off a building with one arm. -That's incredible. | 6:52:45 | 6:52:47
So when you see Spider-Man has super strength, | 6:52:47 | 6:52:51
that is because spiders do have super strength? | 6:52:51 | 6:52:53
Super strength, absolutely. | 6:52:53 | 6:52:55
Spider-man doesn't flick hairs from his bottom, though, does he? | 6:52:55 | 6:52:58
-Not in this movie. -Not in this one. -There's bound to be a sequel. | 6:52:58 | 6:53:01
Right, do you want to put him back? Let's meet the next guy, | 6:53:01 | 6:53:04
cos that's a big one. Now, is it worth just leaving | 6:53:04 | 6:53:07
this guy in the cage, cos he's a monster, isn't he? | 6:53:07 | 6:53:10
Well, this one is a Goliath bird-eating tarantula | 6:53:10 | 6:53:12
and out the three tarantulas | 6:53:12 | 6:53:14
that I've brought today, this is the most aggressive | 6:53:14 | 6:53:17
and that's why I'm going to leave him in the terrarium. | 6:53:17 | 6:53:21
We're fine with that. You keep him exactly where he is, dude. | 6:53:21 | 6:53:24
I hate to break it to you, but I can't get the lid back on the box. | 6:53:24 | 6:53:26
I'm going to get you My First Jigsaw for your birthday. | 6:53:26 | 6:53:29
He actually has super senses, just like Spider-man, | 6:53:29 | 6:53:32
because this animal can actually sense a threat | 6:53:32 | 6:53:34
and if he senses a threat, then he'll rub his hairs | 6:53:34 | 6:53:37
and it makes a hissing noise. | 6:53:37 | 6:53:38
So he has spider senses like the superhero himself as well? | 6:53:38 | 6:53:41
This hissing noise you're talking about, he won't do it now | 6:53:41 | 6:53:44
because there's no danger here, he's quite content, | 6:53:44 | 6:53:46
but we have a recording of what this spider sounds like | 6:53:46 | 6:53:49
when he feels threatened. Have a listen. | 6:53:49 | 6:53:51
It's more like a leak, really, isn't it? | 6:53:51 | 6:53:53
-Sounds like a snake. -Like a rattlesnake. When they're scared, | 6:53:53 | 6:53:56
they shake their tail to let you know. | 6:53:56 | 6:53:59
To let you know danger, yes. | 6:53:59 | 6:54:01
This is the largest tarantula in the world. | 6:54:01 | 6:54:04
They can actually grow 12 inches, like a dinner plate, | 6:54:04 | 6:54:07
just like a dinner plate, and its fangs | 6:54:07 | 6:54:10
-are the same length as a cheetah's claws. -What?! | 6:54:10 | 6:54:14
-A cheetah's claws? -A cheetah's claws. | 6:54:14 | 6:54:16
You don't think that's possible from something so small, do you? | 6:54:16 | 6:54:19
Well, there you have it. It's definitely true, isn't it? | 6:54:19 | 6:54:22
You think about Spider-man, he's got the strongest web in the world | 6:54:22 | 6:54:25
he can climb walls and... and he's as scary as... | 6:54:25 | 6:54:27
Are you nervous? | 6:54:27 | 6:54:29
No. It's reminding me about a frog a little bit and I don't know why. | 6:54:29 | 6:54:32
I'm not nervous, but I'm a little bit itchy. | 6:54:32 | 6:54:34
Joe, thank you so much | 6:54:34 | 6:54:35
for introducing us to these fabulous creatures. | 6:54:35 | 6:54:38
Now, this is your show, so let us know what you think. | 6:54:38 | 6:54:40
We're live, get in touch. | 6:54:40 | 6:54:42
The e-mail address is [email protected] | 6:54:42 | 6:54:45

and while you're in touch, let us know what your favourite book is, | 6:54:48 | 6:54:51
because later on in the show, | 6:54:51 | 6:54:53
Dick and Dom are going to be | 6:54:53 | 6:54:55
sharing with us their favourite tale. | 6:54:55 | 6:54:57
So please get in touch, | 6:54:57 | 6:54:59
we'll try and read out your e-mails later in the show. | 6:54:59 | 6:55:01
Now though, a few months ago, we moved our garden | 6:55:01 | 6:55:04
from West London to our new home here in Greater Manchester. | 6:55:04 | 6:55:06
Her Royal Highness Princess Anne came to help us open it in style, | 6:55:06 | 6:55:09
but at the time our gardener, Chris Collins, | 6:55:09 | 6:55:12
had a job that wasn't quite finished. | 6:55:12 | 6:55:15
I've got one big job left to complete our garden - | 6:55:19 | 6:55:22
the pond. | 6:55:22 | 6:55:24
'I want to get some new fish and plants, | 6:55:25 | 6:55:28
'but before I can do that, I need to put in some groundwork | 6:55:28 | 6:55:31
'by cutting off the ugly old metal grill...' Job one done. | 6:55:31 | 6:55:34
'..and replacing it with a specially designed pond cover.' | 6:55:34 | 6:55:37
Look at that! | 6:55:37 | 6:55:39
'All the mess from the drilling has gone straight into the water | 6:55:42 | 6:55:45
'which doesn't matter as the next job is to drain the pond, | 6:55:45 | 6:55:47
'and I'm doing that the good old-fashioned way.' | 6:55:47 | 6:55:49
Staying remarkably dry, considering! | 6:55:52 | 6:55:54
Oh, look. Money. | 6:55:56 | 6:55:59
There's gold in that there water. | 6:55:59 | 6:56:00
As you can see, it's also become a bit of a wishing well. | 6:56:03 | 6:56:06
So if you like muddy money, this is the place to come. | 6:56:06 | 6:56:09
'Now the pond's cleaned out, I'm off to the garden centre. | 6:56:11 | 6:56:14
'First up, I need to choose our plants.' | 6:56:14 | 6:56:16
Now, this is what you call an oxygenator. | 6:56:16 | 6:56:19
It'll keep the water full of oxygen, | 6:56:19 | 6:56:21
and that'll help keep our Blue Peter pond nice and healthy. | 6:56:21 | 6:56:24
Now, I really do want something special and beautiful | 6:56:24 | 6:56:27
for the Blue Peter pond. | 6:56:27 | 6:56:28
So I've chosen the royalty of water plants, the water lily or nymphaea. | 6:56:28 | 6:56:32
You could say this is going to be the princess of our pond. | 6:56:32 | 6:56:35
Now they're chosen, it's time for some fish. | 6:56:35 | 6:56:37
This fella here is called an arowana. | 6:56:40 | 6:56:42
It's a pretty special fish, it can live for up to 20 years | 6:56:42 | 6:56:46
and it's quite expensive. It costs at £2,000 to £3,000. | 6:56:46 | 6:56:49
He's so special that sometimes | 6:56:49 | 6:56:51
they fit them with a microchip at the back of the head | 6:56:51 | 6:56:53
so if they go missing, the owner can still find them. | 6:56:53 | 6:56:55
But I don't think we had enough change in the bottom of our pond | 6:56:55 | 6:56:58
to afford one of these. | 6:56:58 | 6:57:01
These fellas are stingrays. Very beautiful. | 6:57:03 | 6:57:05
Look at the markings on that. They're actually related to sharks. | 6:57:05 | 6:57:09
Now, their bodies are made entirely of cartilage, no bone at all, | 6:57:09 | 6:57:12
and cartilage is the same stuff we have in the end of our noses, | 6:57:12 | 6:57:15
but I'm not going to stick my hand in, | 6:57:15 | 6:57:17
just in case they're in a bad mood. | 6:57:17 | 6:57:18
But tropical fish wouldn't survive in our pond, | 6:57:18 | 6:57:22
so I need to look at some that prefer cold water. | 6:57:22 | 6:57:24
Now, everybody knows and loves a goldfish | 6:57:26 | 6:57:28
and they can get really big. | 6:57:28 | 6:57:30
According to the Guinness World Records, | 6:57:30 | 6:57:33
the biggest one ever measured from tail to snout was 47.4 centimetres. | 6:57:33 | 6:57:36
Now, I think goldfish are the goal for us. | 6:57:36 | 6:57:39
I think they'll go in our pond perfectly, | 6:57:39 | 6:57:41
but maybe this one is a little too big, | 6:57:41 | 6:57:44
so I'm going to put him back and let him rejoin his friends. | 6:57:44 | 6:57:47
There you go, fella. | 6:57:48 | 6:57:50
This is perfect. | 6:57:53 | 6:57:55
Just what I wanted for the Blue Peter pond. | 6:57:55 | 6:57:58
Well, I'm back in the garden. I've got my fish and plants. | 6:57:58 | 6:58:00
Just got to wait a while for that to fill up now, and we can get going. | 6:58:00 | 6:58:04
Right, time to start planting. | 6:58:04 | 6:58:06
You might have frogs and toads or newts that want to go | 6:58:11 | 6:58:14
in and out the pond from time to time. | 6:58:14 | 6:58:16
So what we need to is build a little corridor from land to water. | 6:58:16 | 6:58:19
It's very, very simple. Well, I've got a lot of fish to put in the pond | 6:58:19 | 6:58:22
-and I think I need some help, but luckily I've got... -Chloe. | 6:58:22 | 6:58:25
-Keelagh. -Megan. -Noah. | 6:58:25 | 6:58:28
I think you should go first, Chloe, | 6:58:28 | 6:58:29
and just gently put him on top of the water in the bag. | 6:58:29 | 6:58:32
That's it, and you can let him go | 6:58:32 | 6:58:34
and hold the back of the bag like this. | 6:58:34 | 6:58:36
And let go of the front, brilliant. | 6:58:36 | 6:58:38
Do you want to go next? Gently lower him in. He looks good, doesn't he? | 6:58:38 | 6:58:41
Go on, then. That's it. So there you go. The first four fish in. | 6:58:41 | 6:58:45
Brilliant. OK, well, thanks very much. | 6:58:45 | 6:58:48
Did a brilliant job, released the fish | 6:58:48 | 6:58:50
and that is our Blue Peter garden pond officially completed. | 6:58:50 | 6:58:54
THEY CHEER | 6:58:54 | 6:58:57
And here it is, the new look Blue Peter pond. Isn't it lovely? | 6:58:57 | 6:59:01
And if you are wondering how much money was found, it's £39.96, | 6:59:01 | 6:59:04
it's all in this jar and it's all going to Children In Need. | 6:59:04 | 6:59:07
If you are going to visit the Blue Peter garden, by the way, | 6:59:07 | 6:59:10
please don't throw any more coins in the pond | 6:59:10 | 6:59:12
cos that's where the fish live now. Helen, what's still to come? | 6:59:12 | 6:59:14
Well, Barney, while you make your way back into the studio, | 6:59:14 | 6:59:17
I can tell you what's happening on today's show. | 6:59:17 | 6:59:19
Still to come, CBBC's Dick and Dom | 6:59:19 | 6:59:21
will be revealing their all-time favourite book, | 6:59:21 | 6:59:25
and the UK's freestyle scooter champions | 6:59:25 | 6:59:27
will be here to wow you with their slick tricks. | 6:59:27 | 6:59:31
Now, if you've been watching Blue Peter's big Olympic tour | 6:59:33 | 6:59:36
on Saturday mornings, you will know that Barney and I | 6:59:36 | 6:59:38
have been taking on four celebrity friends | 6:59:38 | 6:59:41
in a different Olympic sport each week. | 6:59:41 | 6:59:43
This week we headed to the tennis courts | 6:59:43 | 6:59:45
and Barney is desperate for you to see what happened. | 6:59:45 | 6:59:48
Here is your host, Football Focus' Dan Walker, to give you the low-down. | 6:59:48 | 6:59:52
Here are our competitors. | 6:59:54 | 6:59:55
She's going from strength to strength, classical singer Laura. | 6:59:55 | 6:59:59
Determined to hold on to his lead, Strictly dancer Brendan. | 6:59:59 | 7:00:02
Formerly of Emmerdale, pleased there's no more cycling, it's Adele. | 7:00:02 | 7:00:06
He's still super-relaxed and stylish, MC Romeo. | 7:00:06 | 7:00:09
Helen's got a spring in her step after winning BMX | 7:00:09 | 7:00:13
and he needs the points to stay in contention, it's Barney. | 7:00:13 | 7:00:17
Athletes, hello. We've had some fun so far but it's all about to change. | 7:00:17 | 7:00:20
You've been competing as men and women but the remaining events | 7:00:20 | 7:00:24
are about technique rather than power | 7:00:24 | 7:00:26
so you are all against each other. | 7:00:26 | 7:00:28
This is how this challenge works - it's human against machine. | 7:00:28 | 7:00:32
Ball machine. | 7:00:32 | 7:00:35
Each player will get 20 balls fired at them | 7:00:35 | 7:00:38
alternating between a forehand and backhand. | 7:00:38 | 7:00:41
The aim is to return as many as they can into the court | 7:00:41 | 7:00:44
where they'll score one point if it bounces in the service boxes, | 7:00:44 | 7:00:47
three points for the back of the court and, if they want to go crazy, | 7:00:47 | 7:00:51
five points if they get them between the tram lines. | 7:00:51 | 7:00:53
And we will not let our athletes see each other, | 7:00:53 | 7:00:56
so they won't know what score to beat. | 7:00:56 | 7:00:58
So it's Romeo to go first and he initially found it hard | 7:01:00 | 7:01:04
wasting a number of scoring opportunities. | 7:01:04 | 7:01:08
Soon he found his range with some consistent forehand | 7:01:08 | 7:01:11
and backhand strokes. | 7:01:11 | 7:01:13
He had good length via the baseline to score a lot of three point shots | 7:01:14 | 7:01:18
but no tram line five-pointers could cost him dear. | 7:01:18 | 7:01:21
Brendan tried to play it safe early on but was put off his stride | 7:01:23 | 7:01:26
by confusing his forehand and backhand. | 7:01:26 | 7:01:28
I'm sorry. Backhand. | 7:01:28 | 7:01:30
He also found the net, which made him very angry. | 7:01:30 | 7:01:33
Argh! | 7:01:33 | 7:01:35 | |
He really wasn't making it easy for himself. | 7:01:35 | 7:01:37
He decided to aim for the tram lines | 7:01:37 | 7:01:39
to try and claw back some vital points. | 7:01:39 | 7:01:42
Will it be enough to beat Romeo? | 7:01:42 | 7:01:45
That was the worst performance I could have possibly done. | 7:01:45 | 7:01:47
I don't believe you. I think you have nailed it. | 7:01:47 | 7:01:51
Adele's turn now and she was caught out early | 7:01:52 | 7:01:55
by the speed of the ball machine. | 7:01:55 | 7:01:57
Some of her mishits actually ended up scoring. | 7:01:57 | 7:01:59
In trying to hit the ball harder, she certainly enjoyed herself | 7:01:59 | 7:02:03
but it didn't necessarily help with the points. | 7:02:03 | 7:02:06
Oh, five! | 7:02:06 | 7:02:07
She did find the tram lines once. | 7:02:07 | 7:02:09
Will it be enough to beat the others? | 7:02:09 | 7:02:12
-I cannot tell you how excited I am! -APPLAUSE | 7:02:14 | 7:02:17
Argh! That was so good! | 7:02:19 | 7:02:22
-Look how excited you are! -I can't believe it. Can't believe it. | 7:02:22 | 7:02:25
Laura was up next and had an excellent start | 7:02:27 | 7:02:29
scoring with her first six shots. | 7:02:29 | 7:02:32
Some were also in the five points area. | 7:02:32 | 7:02:35
She began to lose her rhythm halfway, through, | 7:02:35 | 7:02:38
trying a bit too hard and hitting the ball too long. | 7:02:38 | 7:02:40
So will her great early form be enough? | 7:02:40 | 7:02:43
If you tell them you've not done well, they will think you are lying. | 7:02:45 | 7:02:48
-Did I do that badly? -No, you didn't do... | 7:02:48 | 7:02:50
No, not at all, you did really well. | 7:02:50 | 7:02:53
So, Barney up next | 7:02:53 | 7:02:55
and a perfect start for him as he went straight for the tram lines. | 7:02:55 | 7:03:00
But after hitting a few out, he decided to play it safe. | 7:03:00 | 7:03:03
Some consistent scoring and good technique from Barney | 7:03:05 | 7:03:08
and he certainly left no margin for error with some shots. | 7:03:08 | 7:03:11
-This gives Barney a real chance. -Is that it? | 7:03:11 | 7:03:14
Look at that smile! He's got a wry smile. | 7:03:14 | 7:03:17
-Yeah, he's got a little smug smile. -Finally Barney's back on top! | 7:03:17 | 7:03:21
And finally it was Helen. | 7:03:21 | 7:03:23
She played it safe from the start, aiming for the middle of the court. | 7:03:23 | 7:03:27
There were very few mistakes and one five point shot, | 7:03:27 | 7:03:32
But a lot of her balls did drop short, losing her some vital points. | 7:03:32 | 7:03:35
So will it be enough? | 7:03:35 | 7:03:37
Athletes, I know you are desperate for the point revelation. | 7:03:38 | 7:03:42
With one point, having scored 13, | 7:03:42 | 7:03:46
it's Adele! She did enjoy it, though. | 7:03:46 | 7:03:50
Two points with 28... | 7:03:50 | 7:03:53
goes to Romeo. | 7:03:53 | 7:03:55
33 points was enough to get Brendan three points. | 7:03:56 | 7:04:00
40 points and four points... | 7:04:02 | 7:04:04
go to Laura. | 7:04:04 | 7:04:06
OK, so, 45 score, | 7:04:07 | 7:04:10
five points go to... | 7:04:10 | 7:04:12
Helen Skelton... | 7:04:12 | 7:04:15
-ALL CHEER -..which means... | 7:04:15 | 7:04:18
Barney, 53, six points! | 7:04:18 | 7:04:21
Celebratory dance! Can I just say? The reason I'm so excited - | 7:04:27 | 7:04:30
the only thing I've ever won is a darts competition. | 7:04:30 | 7:04:33
That's cos I was playing against my five-year-old sister | 7:04:33 | 7:04:35
who couldn't reach the board. | 7:04:35 | 7:04:36
I get cross with him because he gets too harsh on himself. | 7:04:36 | 7:04:39
You are back in the game, we're back in the competition Barney. | 7:04:39 | 7:04:42
Thank you very much. How's that affected the leaderboard? | 7:04:42 | 7:04:44
Well, Brendan's still out in front. He's in gold position, | 7:04:44 | 7:04:47
Helen and Laura are in silver position, Romeo is in bronze, | 7:04:47 | 7:04:50
I've moved up a little bit. It's all to play for - | 7:04:50 | 7:04:52
three more challenges to go. ..Ow. | 7:04:52 | 7:04:53
-It's not over till it's over. -True dat. | 7:04:53 | 7:04:55
So make sure you check out Blue Peter's big Olympic tour, | 7:04:55 | 7:04:57
it continues on Saturday at nine o'clock. | 7:04:57 | 7:05:00
-I'm really too competitive, aren't I? -A little bit. | 7:05:00 | 7:05:02
From 10am on Saturday morning, we open our gates | 7:05:02 | 7:05:05
and invite you to a free event. You don't need a ticket, | 7:05:05 | 7:05:08
so come along and see us if you are in Essex. | 7:05:08 | 7:05:11
We'll be in Saffron Walden. | 7:05:11 | 7:05:12
Can we talk about the torch a little bit? | 7:05:12 | 7:05:14
You carried it last week, it's very exciting. | 7:05:14 | 7:05:16
Yes, we can show you exactly what happened | 7:05:16 | 7:05:18
when I carried the torch in Wolverhampton. | 7:05:18 | 7:05:20
Wolverhampton, thank you for your support. They adopted me. | 7:05:20 | 7:05:23
Everybody would, it's your smiley face. | 7:05:23 | 7:05:25
Let's talk about the summer. Let's talk about what you'll be doing. | 7:05:25 | 7:05:27
I have a picture in my head that you will be relaxing, | 7:05:27 | 7:05:30
sitting in your garden on a deckchair like this, | 7:05:30 | 7:05:33
reading your favourite book and earlier, | 7:05:33 | 7:05:34
we asked you to get in touch and talk about your favourite book. | 7:05:34 | 7:05:37
You have been doing that, thank you very much. | 7:05:37 | 7:05:39
Megan got in touch. | 7:05:39 | 7:05:40
That's the first time | 7:05:40 | 7:05:41
Barney's ever done that, | 7:05:41 | 7:05:43
climbed all the way up himself. | 7:05:43 | 7:05:44
See, we're all achieving something today, everybody. | 7:05:44 | 7:05:46
Megan, who is seven, loves Matilda, that's her favourite book. | 7:05:46 | 7:05:50
"The best bit is when Miss Honey | 7:05:50 | 7:05:52
"tells Matilda that Mrs Trunchbull is her auntie." | 7:05:52 | 7:05:55
I love Matilda. Good one. | 7:05:55 | 7:05:56
Meg's favourite book is the Hunger Games | 7:05:56 | 7:05:58
because you never know what is going to happen. | 7:05:58 | 7:06:00
It's a bit scary, though, isn't it? Harriet, who's ten, says, | 7:06:00 | 7:06:03
"My favourite book is the Jane Blonde series | 7:06:03 | 7:06:05
"because I love all the spying in it." | 7:06:05 | 7:06:07
Will says, "My favourite book is How To Train Your Dragon | 7:06:07 | 7:06:10
"cos it's really funny." Wouldn't it be great if you had a dragon? | 7:06:10 | 7:06:13
Now, some great recommendations there. | 7:06:14 | 7:06:16
If you're going on holiday, | 7:06:16 | 7:06:17
you might want to pick up a few of those. | 7:06:17 | 7:06:20
The reason we're talking about books is because last year, | 7:06:20 | 7:06:22
780,000 of you got involved in a reading project | 7:06:22 | 7:06:24
that saw three million books be read. | 7:06:24 | 7:06:26
This year, the project is called Story Lab | 7:06:26 | 7:06:29
and we're hoping that you are going to get involved with it. | 7:06:29 | 7:06:31
You might have heard about it in your school or your local library. | 7:06:31 | 7:06:34
This is the Story Lab. It's a big flat piece of card | 7:06:34 | 7:06:37
that's got stories all over it that you can turn into a 3D laboratory. | 7:06:37 | 7:06:40
And if you look on the outside of it, | 7:06:40 | 7:06:42
it's got various stories and cartoons and animations | 7:06:42 | 7:06:44
but there are certain squares that are missing. | 7:06:44 | 7:06:46
You need to fill them in and make those colourful | 7:06:46 | 7:06:49
by adding stickers to them and you can do that by reading books. | 7:06:49 | 7:06:51
The challenge is to read six over the summer. | 7:06:51 | 7:06:53
If you read two, you'll get a bronze sticker. ..Don't you dare do | 7:06:53 | 7:06:56
-what I think you are about to do! -I know! | 7:06:56 | 7:06:59
Silver is if you read four books and gold is if you read six or more. | 7:06:59 | 7:07:05
And once you've completed all those, stick your stickers on here | 7:07:05 | 7:07:08
take them into your library and they'll exchange these for these. | 7:07:08 | 7:07:11
A medal or a certificate. | 7:07:11 | 7:07:13
So if you read all the books, you will get your hands on one of those. | 7:07:13 | 7:07:16
We're really hoping you'll get involved. | 7:07:16 | 7:07:18
It doesn't matter if you don't like the books, just pass it to a friend | 7:07:18 | 7:07:21
and pick up another. It's all about reading. | 7:07:21 | 7:07:23
Go to the website... | 7:07:23 | 7:07:24
..or just pop down to your local library for your Story Lab kit. | 7:07:25 | 7:07:29
Now, though, it's time for Dick and Dom. | 7:07:29 | 7:07:31
-You love this bit, don't you? -Because it's my favourite story. | 7:07:31 | 7:07:34
Basically, we're going to try and smash | 7:07:34 | 7:07:36
how many people got involved last year, it was 750,000. | 7:07:36 | 7:07:38
-We want more involved. Here, Dick and Dom... -The dog's going to wee! | 7:07:38 | 7:07:41
..talk about their favourite story, George's Marvellous Medicine - | 7:07:41 | 7:07:44
-with a very strange grandma. What's he doing? -Not here! | 7:07:44 | 7:07:46
I mean, normally grandmas are lovely and sweet and kind | 7:07:51 | 7:07:55
-and smell of pretty flowers, don't they? -Here. | 7:07:55 | 7:07:58
Yeah. Well, not in this book. | 7:07:58 | 7:08:02
I mean, this gran is 100% the opposite. | 7:08:02 | 7:08:04
She shouts, she bullies, she eats slugs. | 7:08:04 | 7:08:07
She's got one of those puckered-up mouths that never smiles. | 7:08:07 | 7:08:11
Who'd want a grandma like that? | 7:08:11 | 7:08:13
Well, this lad George, yeah? He's got no choice. | 7:08:13 | 7:08:15
That horrible crinkly old bag is so horrible to him! | 7:08:15 | 7:08:19
-Until George comes up with a secret plan. -Exactly. | 7:08:19 | 7:08:22
And that's what this book is all about. | 7:08:22 | 7:08:26
Every day George's grandma has to take a special medicine | 7:08:26 | 7:08:29
so George decides to make her a brand-new medicine, | 7:08:29 | 7:08:31
so he runs around the farm where he lives, | 7:08:31 | 7:08:34
finding all sorts of weird ingredients. | 7:08:34 | 7:08:36
Yeah. Rotten banana skins, shoe polish. | 7:08:36 | 7:08:39
Shampoo. Extra hot chilli sauce - oh! | 7:08:41 | 7:08:44
Them! | 7:08:45 | 7:08:47 | |
MIXTURE POPS | 7:08:47 | 7:08:49
And he makes a brand-new mixture that he hopes will give his grandma | 7:08:49 | 7:08:53
a big whopper of a surprise. | 7:08:53 | 7:08:55
Can you smell something funny? | 7:08:56 | 7:08:58
-Oh! -Urgh. | 7:08:58 | 7:08:59
You can really tell that the writer, Roald Dahl, is on George's side. | 7:09:07 | 7:09:11
This is one of my favourite parts of the book. | 7:09:11 | 7:09:13
"What mischief are you up to in there now?" Granny screeched. | 7:09:13 | 7:09:17
"I hear noises!" | 7:09:17 | 7:09:19
George thought it best not to answer this one, | 7:09:19 | 7:09:22
he found a long wooden spoon in a kitchen drawer | 7:09:22 | 7:09:24
and began stirring hard. | 7:09:24 | 7:09:26
The stuff in the pot got hotter and hotter. | 7:09:26 | 7:09:30
Soon, George started to get really excited about his wonderful mixture. | 7:09:30 | 7:09:35
And suddenly, George found himself dancing around the steaming pot | 7:09:36 | 7:09:40
chanting strange words that came into his head out of nowhere. | 7:09:40 | 7:09:44
"Fiery broth and witch's brew, foamy froth and riches blue, | 7:09:44 | 7:09:49
"fume and spume and spoondrift spray, fizzle, swizzle, shout hurray! | 7:09:49 | 7:09:55
"Watch it sloshing, squashing, sploshing, | 7:09:55 | 7:09:57
"hear it hissing, squishing and spitting, | 7:09:57 | 7:10:00
"Grandma better start to pray." | 7:10:00 | 7:10:02
Of course, if you want to know more, you'll have to read the book. | 7:10:15 | 7:10:20
Hang on. Where is the book? | 7:10:20 | 7:10:22
DICK CHOKES AND SPLUTTERS | 7:10:22 | 7:10:25
Oh, no. | 7:10:25 | 7:10:27
-It's amazing! -I know the book's amazing. | 7:10:28 | 7:10:32
-It's mind-blowing! -I know the book is mind-blowing. | 7:10:32 | 7:10:35
But now it's covered in goop. | 7:10:35 | 7:10:38
A bit more salt. | 7:10:47 | 7:10:49
Yeah, salt. | 7:10:49 | 7:10:50
Thank you very much to Dick and Dom. | 7:10:53 | 7:10:55
Next week, Kieron Richardson from Hollyoaks | 7:10:55 | 7:10:58
is going to be sharing his favourite book. | 7:10:58 | 7:11:00
Now Barney - where's he gone now? He's gone again. | 7:11:00 | 7:11:04
As you can see, I've come back outside the studio | 7:11:04 | 7:11:06
on this glorious sunny day to see something very cool happening. | 7:11:06 | 7:11:09
This is freestyle scooter-riding. | 7:11:09 | 7:11:12
This is Josh who's showing us what he can do at the moment. | 7:11:12 | 7:11:14
Josh, when you get a chance, pop over here. Hello, mate. | 7:11:14 | 7:11:17
-You all right? -I'm very good, this is exciting to watch. | 7:11:17 | 7:11:19
-You are a freestyle scooter rider? -Yeah. | 7:11:19 | 7:11:21
How does the freestyle part work? | 7:11:21 | 7:11:23
The freestyle part is basically getting on the scooter | 7:11:23 | 7:11:26
and doing different tricks and stunts. | 7:11:26 | 7:11:28
The thing about a scooter is, you've got handlebars and the deck | 7:11:28 | 7:11:33
so that means you can take tricks from a BMX, like bar spins, | 7:11:33 | 7:11:36
and from skate-boarding you can take board slides too, | 7:11:36 | 7:11:39
if you have stunt pegs and stuff, | 7:11:39 | 7:11:42
so you can do different grinds and stalls. | 7:11:42 | 7:11:44
And also a lot of the tricks and stuff we've invented ourselves, | 7:11:44 | 7:11:49
such as being able to flip the scooter and do bar twists and stuff. | 7:11:49 | 7:11:53
And once you have gone from being a solo rider who learns those tricks, | 7:11:53 | 7:11:56
-you then put it together as part of a team? -Yeah. | 7:11:56 | 7:11:58
How did Team Razor come about? | 7:11:58 | 7:12:00
Well, Team Razor kind of started in America at first | 7:12:00 | 7:12:03
and it was a small little group of riders. | 7:12:03 | 7:12:06
And as soon as they started making more scooters | 7:12:06 | 7:12:09
and getting their name out there, | 7:12:09 | 7:12:11
they decided to make a team in the UK | 7:12:11 | 7:12:13
and we were all picked to be part of the UK team, | 7:12:13 | 7:12:15
and do jams, demos and that sort of thing. | 7:12:15 | 7:12:17
Nice one. Josh, thank you very much for now. | 7:12:17 | 7:12:20
Off you go back to your stuff. Here comes Lewis down the ramp. | 7:12:20 | 7:12:23
Lewis is very experienced, been doing it for a long time. | 7:12:23 | 7:12:25
You started a while ago, | 7:12:25 | 7:12:26
but it started with a funny circumstance, didn't it? | 7:12:26 | 7:12:29
Yeah, it was a complete accident. | 7:12:29 | 7:12:31
I was in a car accident and broke my leg quite seriously, | 7:12:31 | 7:12:35
so it was broken for a long time, and I was 11 years old, so... | 7:12:35 | 7:12:39
Whoa! That was definitely worth a round of applause. | 7:12:39 | 7:12:41
That was amazing, well done. | 7:12:41 | 7:12:43
So really, it started from an accident | 7:12:43 | 7:12:45
but here you are all these years later performing. | 7:12:45 | 7:12:48
Yeah, I got too bored of crutches. I wanted to do something more active, | 7:12:48 | 7:12:51
-so I got on a scooter to get around. -What a great idea - | 7:12:51 | 7:12:54
rather than using crutches and being all boring, get yourself a scooter. | 7:12:54 | 7:12:58
Fantastic. Thank you very much. | 7:12:58 | 7:12:59
I'm going to call Nat in now, who's also had an injury on a scooter. | 7:12:59 | 7:13:02
-You're still suffering a little bit, aren't you? -Yeah. | 7:13:02 | 7:13:05
I am, yeah. On the road to recovery at the moment. | 7:13:05 | 7:13:07
-Doctor said ten weeks? -Yeah. -What did you do? | 7:13:07 | 7:13:09
I broke my ankle in three places. | 7:13:09 | 7:13:11
So it wasn't that nice, but surviving. | 7:13:11 | 7:13:13
Well, don't go back to those places. | 7:13:13 | 7:13:15
We wish you all the best on the road to recovery. | 7:13:15 | 7:13:17
Now, show me how to do something cos I'm dying to have a go. | 7:13:17 | 7:13:20
As you can see, I'm sporting this year's latest safety fashion. | 7:13:20 | 7:13:23
-Right, I'll show you how to do a bunny hop. -Bunny hop, what is that? | 7:13:23 | 7:13:27
It's where you basically just jump in the air. | 7:13:27 | 7:13:30
You've just got to get a bit of speed, pull up on the bars, | 7:13:30 | 7:13:32
jump in the air and land with both feet still on the deck. | 7:13:32 | 7:13:35
So both wheels come off the floor, not like a wheelie, then? | 7:13:35 | 7:13:38
-Yeah. -All right, well, do you want to show me first? -Sure. | 7:13:38 | 7:13:42
Just like that. OK. Dead easy. | 7:13:42 | 7:13:44
That was rubbish, I'm doing that again. | 7:13:47 | 7:13:50
Right. Here we go. | 7:13:51 | 7:13:55
Oh, so close! | 7:13:56 | 7:13:59
I could be here all day doing this but the experts are just to my left | 7:13:59 | 7:14:02
so let's hand over now to what is probably the most impressive thing | 7:14:02 | 7:14:05
I think I've seen on the show for a while. Team Razor. | 7:14:05 | 7:14:07
That was absolutely unbelievable. | 7:14:42 | 7:14:44
Congratulations, Razor, and thank you very much for coming along. | 7:14:44 | 7:14:48
Barney and I had to stay inside because somebody barks at scooters. | 7:14:48 | 7:14:51
And it's not me, is it? So we had to miss out on that one. | 7:14:51 | 7:14:54
Now, throughout the show, we have been asking you to get in touch | 7:14:54 | 7:14:58
and let us know what your favourite book is. | 7:14:58 | 7:15:00
Scarlett said that her favourite book | 7:15:00 | 7:15:01
is the Magic Far Away Tree because it's exciting | 7:15:01 | 7:15:04
and the children go to different lands in each chapter. | 7:15:04 | 7:15:06
-Oh, hello, scooter boy. -Hello. How are you doing? | 7:15:06 | 7:15:09
Katie says, "My favourite is the Chocolate Box Girls set. | 7:15:09 | 7:15:12
"I've read the Cherry Crush and the Marshmallow Skye | 7:15:12 | 7:15:14
"and can't wait for the rest." | 7:15:14 | 7:15:15
How amazing was that? Shame you couldn't be there. | 7:15:15 | 7:15:17
Last time you were barking at the scooters. | 7:15:17 | 7:15:19
Sam thought the spiders were interesting but scary | 7:15:19 | 7:15:21
at the same time, especially because they're poisonous. | 7:15:21 | 7:15:24
Jemima likes Harry Potter as it's action-packed and epic. | 7:15:24 | 7:15:27
Mia likes Diary Of A Wimpy Kid. | 7:15:27 | 7:15:30
Jessica, Amy and Florence - we love you - it says, | 7:15:30 | 7:15:33
"Hi, all. What a fantastic show." | 7:15:33 | 7:15:35
Thanks very much. You can let us know whatever you're thinking. | 7:15:35 | 7:15:38
I'm not sure there are many spider fans out there. | 7:15:38 | 7:15:40
Katie's been in touch to say, | 7:15:40 | 7:15:42
"Those spiders made me shiver - I hate them," | 7:15:42 | 7:15:44
and Eve says that those spiders were terrifying, | 7:15:44 | 7:15:46
"I don't mind bath spiders but those ones made me jump off my seat." | 7:15:46 | 7:15:50
-Sorry about that, Eve. -Right, let's talk about perspective photography. | 7:15:50 | 7:15:53
We spoke about this last week. | 7:15:53 | 7:15:54
It's an amazing technique and many people have got involved. | 7:15:54 | 7:15:57
Jack, Luke and Oliver have created this in their back garden. | 7:15:57 | 7:16:00
How amazing is that? Love it. We've got to fly through these. | 7:16:00 | 7:16:02
Ursula and Toby, fantastic shot. | 7:16:02 | 7:16:04
A look at the consequences of explosive beans there. | 7:16:04 | 7:16:06
Ellie and Anna. Love it. | 7:16:06 | 7:16:10
This is such clever stuff and this one happens to be my favourite. | 7:16:10 | 7:16:13
This is Lucy and Milly from Guildford, | 7:16:13 | 7:16:15
this is a girl on the plank, look at that. | 7:16:15 | 7:16:17
So many more photos on the website if you want to have a look at them | 7:16:17 | 7:16:20
-and please send us some more. -We do love seeing your efforts. | 7:16:20 | 7:16:22
Thank you very much. That's almost it for today's show. | 7:16:22 | 7:16:25
There's just time to tell you what is coming up next week. | 7:16:25 | 7:16:27
We're going to be revealing the winner | 7:16:27 | 7:16:30
of our Blue Peter plane competition. Is it your name and design? | 7:16:30 | 7:16:33
Well, you'll have to watch next week to find out. | 7:16:33 | 7:16:35
And we teach you how to get crafty with a glove. | 7:16:35 | 7:16:39
I do love that, that was such fun make. | 7:16:39 | 7:16:41
You're going to love trying that at home. | 7:16:41 | 7:16:43
