# But here's my number

0:02:210:02:23

# So call me, maybe?

0:02:230:02:25

# You took your time with the call

0:02:290:02:31

# I took no time with the fall

0:02:310:02:33

# You gave me nothing at all

0:02:330:02:35

# Still, you're in my way

0:02:350:02:37

# I beg and borrow and steal

0:02:370:02:40

# At first sight and it's real

0:02:400:02:42

0:03:200:03:22

# Try to chase me

0:03:220:03:25

# But here's my number

0:03:250:03:27

# So call me, maybe?

# I missed you so, so bad

0:03:350:03:37

# Before you came into my life

0:03:370:03:40

# I missed you so bad

0:03:400:03:41

# And you should know that

0:03:410:03:44

# So call me, maybe? #

0:03:440:03:47

Amazing, amazing! Thank you, Carly. I love that song.

0:03:480:03:51

It sounds so good.

0:03:510:03:53

It's one of those songs I've been singing and whistling all summer.

0:03:530:03:56

-Whistling?

-We'd like to hear it actually.

0:03:560:04:00

HELEN WHISTLES "CALL ME MAYBE"

0:04:000:04:02

-That's pretty good.

-That's a possible extra part?

-Better than my singing voice.

0:04:020:04:06

Call Me Maybe is where you've exploded on to the music scene.

0:04:060:04:09

You had a few albums out before but this really kicked off for you, hasn't it?

0:04:090:04:12

Yeah. It's definitely been the song that changed the game for me.

0:04:120:04:15

It was really exciting and I was doing my thing in Canada and Justin Bieber came home for Christmas,

0:04:150:04:20

heard the song being played on the radio, and tweeted about it to all of his fans.

0:04:200:04:23

If you take us back to when you first started to love music,

0:04:230:04:26

what was it about music that made you want to get into it as a career?

0:04:260:04:30

Oh, everything about music.

0:04:300:04:32

I love the words, melodies and stories involved.

0:04:320:04:35

My family was very musical and my dad used to play guitar for me before bed

0:04:350:04:39

and I would fall asleep listening to him sing and trying to sing along before I passed out.

0:04:390:04:43

So, when I was seven, I went on stage for the first time in a local talent show,

0:04:430:04:47

and that's when I knew it was love at first try.

0:04:470:04:49

I wanted to do as many performances as I could from there on out.

0:04:490:04:53

So, what you say to anybody who is a budding musician,

0:04:530:04:56

who thinks, "I'd love to be where she is. I love music. I want to make it my career."

0:04:560:05:00

Oh, I would say, "Try and get your hands on an instrument

0:05:000:05:03

"as early as you can." And never give up.

0:05:030:05:05

You know, you never know which door's going to open for you, so knock on all of them.

0:05:050:05:10

You could be exploding on to the music scene in a couple of years.

0:05:100:05:13

Carly, thank you very much for now. Obviously, if you want to be a pop star, you want to release your track,

0:05:130:05:17

you must get lots of things ready. It's not just about writing a song.

0:05:170:05:20

You've got to have your promoter, a publisher, a song writer as well.

0:05:200:05:23

-There's a lot that goes into it.

-A lot of important jobs.

0:05:230:05:26

Perhaps one of the most important is the producer.

0:05:260:05:28

I was lucky enough to go along and meet the man

0:05:280:05:30

who helped kick-start Ed Sheeran's career.

0:05:300:05:33

The English countryside is not the most obvious place

0:05:350:05:39

for a top music studio.

0:05:390:05:40

But in this oasis of creativity,

0:05:400:05:42

is the home of music producer Jake Gosling.

0:05:420:05:45

It's here, at his Sticky Studios,

0:05:450:05:48

that Jake helped turn Ed Sheeran into a Brit Award-winning star.

0:05:480:05:52

And I've come along to find out how - in this idyllic setting -

0:05:520:05:55

Jake creates musical magic.

0:05:550:05:58

In your job, what would you say the key things are?

0:05:580:06:02

When I first met Ed Sheeran, we hadn't met.

0:06:020:06:04

And then, suddenly, we're in a studio and we're like,

0:06:040:06:06

"What should be write a song about?" And you're like a psychiatrist, I guess, a bit.

0:06:060:06:10

"So, tell me what's going on. Have you broken up with anyone or whatever?"

0:06:100:06:14

-Erm...

-When there is a break-up, are you a bit like, "Yes!"

0:06:140:06:18

-Yes.

-That's great material.

0:06:180:06:20

Do you need to be a musician? Do you need to have an acoustic guitar?

0:06:200:06:25

Er, not necessarily, no. I used to do piano lessons.

0:06:250:06:29

I was never particularly good, to be honest with you.

0:06:290:06:32

But um... I sort of experimented.

0:06:320:06:34

My dad played piano and stuff, so I learned a bit from him.

0:06:340:06:38

So, for our budding Eds at home, where do they start? What should they do?

0:06:380:06:41

I think the first thing to do is to try and really be original.

0:06:410:06:45

I think it's very easy to... We don't want another Ed. We've got Ed.

0:06:450:06:48

We love Ed. It's about having something individual.

0:06:480:06:52

It's nuts to think you could write a song in a day

0:06:520:06:55

and that song could be around for decades and become iconic.

0:06:550:06:59

It's like when I heard Lego House.

0:06:590:07:02

I went to Wembley and saw 16,000 people sing it.

0:07:020:07:06

I was like, "I co-wrote that with Ed" and it was just bizarre.

0:07:060:07:09

# I'm out of touch I'm out of love... #

0:07:090:07:12

The latest act to be produced by Jake is 18-year-old Nina Nesbitt.

0:07:120:07:16

She released her second single, Apple Tree, in April.

0:07:160:07:19

How did Jake put it together?

0:07:190:07:21

This song, Apple Tree, is very emotional.

0:07:210:07:24

It started with just the acoustic guitar here.

0:07:240:07:27

-It was pretty empty so we thought, let's just put some "ahs" in there.

-MUSIC PLAYS

0:07:270:07:31

There we go. We've got some "ahs" coming in.

0:07:310:07:33

# Ahh-ahhh...#

0:07:330:07:34

-Is that Nina?

-That's Nina doing backing vocals, yeah.

0:07:340:07:37

OK, so that's nice and pretty.

0:07:370:07:40

We thought, let's step it up a bit. Let try some drums.

0:07:400:07:43

So, are they all recorded separately?

0:07:440:07:48

They're all recorded separately bit by bit, yeah.

0:07:480:07:50

When you listen to a song, you don't realise

0:07:500:07:52

there are so many bits involved - so many layers to it, do you?

0:07:520:07:55

I know. A little cymbal here or a guitar there.

0:07:550:07:57

I think that's what makes it interesting.

0:07:570:08:00

Jake, thank you for your advice and expertise.

0:08:000:08:02

Nina sounds great on the computer.

0:08:020:08:04

But I'm delighted to say that the lady herself

0:08:040:08:06

is going to give us an exclusive performance.

0:08:060:08:10

# Where do I start with you?

0:08:160:08:18

# I could say you're a bit way-lead boy

0:08:180:08:20

# Where is my heart with you?

0:08:200:08:23

# I could say I left it on the floor, boy

0:08:230:08:25

# Are you gonna pick it up pick it up? Hey-ey

0:08:250:08:29

# Things kinda got dark with you I drunk your love up too quick boy

0:08:290:08:33

# Where did our love get to?

0:08:330:08:35

# Don't ask me That's something that you destroyed

0:08:350:08:38

# Cos now we're burning up burning up, burning up, hey-ey

0:08:380:08:42

# Flames race like cars in a haze

0:08:420:08:44

# Tears in my eyes But not down my face

0:08:440:08:47

# This was a waste This was a waste, whoa-oh-oh

0:08:470:08:51

# A shame to embrace the love that we faced

0:08:510:08:54

# Hours were days when I was in your grace

0:08:540:08:56

# This was a waste This was a waste. Whoa-oh-oh

0:08:560:09:01

# Well, I'm sorry to be honest but this love is no good, boy

0:09:040:09:08

# And I'm sorry you're drunk on it But it's making me annoyed

0:09:080:09:14

# Heartbroken heartbreaker that's me

0:09:140:09:16

# I accept it, I get the point

0:09:160:09:18

# But stop jumping in to fountains Just to pick up all the coins

0:09:180:09:24

# We were rushed We had no foundations

0:09:240:09:26

# Explanations were never settled first

0:09:260:09:29

# I guess when building something special

0:09:290:09:32

# You should always use ground work

0:09:320:09:34

# We're falling down falling down, hey-ey

0:09:340:09:36

# I could blame you for a lot but I guess it was me that let us drop

0:09:360:09:41

# You go crying to your friends now And I'm left looking not so hot

0:09:410:09:46

# But now we're burning up burning up. Hey-ey

0:09:460:09:49

# Flames race like cars in a haze

0:09:490:09:53

# Tears in my eyes but not down my face

0:09:530:09:55

# This was a waste, this was a waste Woa-oh-oh

0:09:550:10:00

# A shame to embrace the love that we faced

0:10:000:10:03

# Hours were days When I was in your grace

0:10:030:10:05

# This was a waste, this was a waste Whoa-oh-oh

0:10:050:10:10

# Well, I'm sorry to be honest But this love is no good, boy

0:10:130:10:17

# And I'm sorry you're drunk on it But it's making me annoyed

0:10:170:10:23

# Heartbroken heartbreaker that's me

0:10:230:10:25

# I accept it, I get the point

0:10:250:10:28

# But stop jumping in to fountains Just to pick up all the coins

0:10:280:10:33

# I let you walk all over me Leave your footprints on my heart

0:10:330:10:39

# And it's becoming clear to see It's been like this from the start

0:10:390:10:44

# I let you walk all over me Leave your footprints on my heart

0:10:440:10:50

# And it's becoming clear to see It's been like this from the start

0:10:500:10:54

# Well, I'm sorry to be honest But this love is no good, boy

0:10:580:11:03

0:11:360:11:43

We're in BBC Maida Vale Studios - the home of the Radio 1 Live Lounge.

0:11:440:11:48

Now all kinds of people have recorded here.

0:11:480:11:50

Our next guest is no stranger to the place either.

0:11:500:11:53

-Tulisa, thank you for joining us.

-Thanks for having me.

0:11:530:11:55

Now, this programme is all about giving everybody a guide to making it in the music industry.

0:11:550:11:59

Now, I mean, your year has been so successful, hasn't it?

0:11:590:12:03

Singles, album on the way. Success with N-Dubz.

0:12:030:12:06

Rewind a bit. Did you ever think you would be this much of a success?

0:12:060:12:10

I think when I was really young

0:12:100:12:12

I did believe I was going to be a pop star in my mind.

0:12:120:12:17

There was nothing else I could do. I won't be able to do anything else - this is it.

0:12:170:12:21

And then, when I hit like 15, 16, and I started to see the real world,

0:12:210:12:26

and wake up a bit, I was like, "Hmm, this is a lot tougher than what I thought it would be.

0:12:260:12:30

"I've got just as much chance as everyone else, so I've got to work triple as hard."

0:12:300:12:35

Maybe that was good then. You realised it was tough and it made you keep going?

0:12:350:12:38

Exactly! And kept you grounded as well.

0:12:380:12:43

Everyone, when they're 11 years old, "I'm going to be a pop star!"

0:12:430:12:46

And then you get a bit older and you're like, "This is a tough industry."

0:12:460:12:49

So, for kids out there, who are thinking, "I can do it.

0:12:490:12:52

"I've got the X Factor. I'm going to make it in the music industry."

0:12:520:12:55

What would you advise? What are your top tips?

0:12:550:12:57

For an audition, I would say, the first thing we're going to see

0:12:570:13:01

before you open your mouth, is going to be what you're wearing.

0:13:010:13:04

So, make sure you get your outfit right.

0:13:040:13:07

Something that represents you as a character

0:13:070:13:10

and makes you stand out from the crowd.

0:13:100:13:12

I don't mean come dressed up as a giraffe, I just mean...

0:13:120:13:15

It would get you noticed.

0:13:150:13:17

It would. If that's what you're about, then dress up as a giraffe.

0:13:170:13:20

But, just an outfit that expresses you.

0:13:200:13:24

The second thing will be warm up. So many people come on stage and they haven't warmed up.

0:13:240:13:28

Because they've been in the queue all day, they think,

0:13:280:13:31

"I don't want to do it. There's other people around."

0:13:310:13:34

Warm up, so, when you step on the stage,

0:13:340:13:36

your voice is in tip-top condition.

0:13:360:13:38

And, third tip would obviously be song choice.

0:13:380:13:42

Make sure you pick something that shows off your voice to the best of its ability.

0:13:420:13:47

Something that the public... You think everyone can relate to.

0:13:470:13:51

This is a song that everybody will know.

0:13:510:13:53

Um, and also that is close to the genre of music you want to do.

0:13:530:13:56

Some people might pick a song that they personally love.

0:13:560:14:00

You've got to think about everything.

0:14:000:14:02

You're pitching yourself as a package.

0:14:020:14:04

How do they go about getting the right people to hear their music?

0:14:040:14:08

It's definitely all about the internet.

0:14:080:14:10

I think it's the easiest way to get noticed by the public -

0:14:100:14:14

build a fan base - and by the record labels as well.

0:14:140:14:16

They have people that go on to the internet and search for people

0:14:160:14:20

that have buzzes around them just online. And then, you never know.

0:14:200:14:23

You could have a record label get in contact with you before you contact them.

0:14:230:14:26

Wise words, Tulisa. Thank you very much for your advice.

0:14:260:14:29

Thank you for having me and listening.

0:14:290:14:31

Form one pop star to another, Barney, who's with you?

0:14:310:14:34

-Tinchy, thanks for coming.

-Good to see you.

0:14:340:14:36

Can you talk us through what it was like starting as a young musician and getting to where you are now?

0:14:360:14:40

Yeah, definitely. It's never been easy

0:14:400:14:42

from when I started when I was young.

0:14:420:14:45

When I was much younger, it felt like something

0:14:450:14:48

it was just like fun - a hobby.

0:14:480:14:50

There were always things where you feel, is this really possible?

0:14:500:14:53

You have dreams - what you want to achieve. But...

0:14:530:14:55

I needed the right people round me and the right attitude.

0:14:550:14:58

I thought like, you go through so many stages and there's so many things, like trials and...

0:14:580:15:02

I always say, you can never experience how good something is

0:15:020:15:05

if you don't see the bad side of it. That's what I went through.

0:15:050:15:08

You've got to do something wrong before you do it right, that's always the way.

0:15:080:15:11

You learn more from failing than success I've always been told.

0:15:110:15:14

And that's actually a key saying.

0:15:140:15:17

When everything's going right, you don't know what wrong is.

0:15:170:15:19

So, when things don't go as good, you realise or notice, wait,

0:15:190:15:22

I need to change this, and change that to make it that much better.

0:15:220:15:25

Let's imagine for a second, we've got an army of little Tinchy Stryders,

0:15:250:15:29

who want to be like you. They're watching what you do - listening to your music.

0:15:290:15:32

What advice would you give?

0:15:320:15:33

Try and be yourself. That's the key thing.

0:15:330:15:36

Being unique is the easiest thing, the way I look at it.

0:15:360:15:39

Picture this. You look in the mirror and there's only of you.

0:15:390:15:42

-Sure.

-Trying to be someone else is harder, so being unique -

0:15:420:15:45

working hard, focussed - never feel like...

0:15:450:15:48

Everyone's entitled to have their opinion but, if you believe in something, stick with your heart.

0:15:480:15:52

You're renowned for being unique and your new single, Help Me,

0:15:520:15:55

is going to show that. So, without further ado, let's hear it.

0:15:550:15:58

-Thank you.

-Cheers, mate!

0:19:020:19:04

# Money can't buy this not even a lump sum. Yeah. #

0:19:040:19:08

It's amazing that he manages to get so many words in one breath.

0:19:110:19:15

-I've tried it, it's impossible.

-Go on!

0:19:150:19:17

De be do bi da. Just... I can't even say words.

0:19:170:19:20

That's great. It might be a hit.

0:19:200:19:23

Anyway, it's one thing having a great song,

0:19:230:19:24

but to make it a hit you need to make sure

0:19:240:19:26

that a lot of people listen to it.

0:19:260:19:28

Tulisa said that one way to do that is by using the internet.

0:19:280:19:31

Another great way to do that is to go on tour

0:19:310:19:33

and perform your song for thousands of people.

0:19:330:19:35

Recently, that's exactly what happened

0:19:350:19:37

when I met a girl called A*M*E.

0:19:370:19:38

She's an aspiring pop star and got to live out every pop star's dream

0:19:380:19:41

by going on tour with the fabulous JLS.

0:19:410:19:43

Here's what happened when I went along to meet her.

0:19:430:19:46

Welcome to Lincoln.

0:19:480:19:50

Famous for its cathedral, its Lincolnshire sausages,

0:19:500:19:53

and steep hill - voted Britain's greatest street,

0:19:530:19:56

though I don't know who voted for it. I'm exhausted!

0:19:560:20:01

But even better than that is the Lincolnshire Showground.

0:20:010:20:04

Not so much the showground itself, but the fact that tonight

0:20:040:20:06

it's playing host to a huge concert with JLS.

0:20:060:20:09

Also on the bill tonight is a brand new popite

0:20:090:20:13

about to take the music world by storm.

0:20:130:20:15

She's called A*M*E, so let's say hello.

0:20:150:20:17

-A*M*E, hi!

-Hello.

-How are you?

-I'm good. How are you?

0:20:170:20:21

Very well. Nice to meet you.

0:20:210:20:22

-So, you're going to be our tour guide for the day.

-I am indeed. Yes.

0:20:220:20:25

-Shall we start backstage?

-Let's do it.

0:20:250:20:28

17-year-old A*M*E was discovered last year

0:20:280:20:31

when performing at her high school talent show.

0:20:310:20:34

This led to her signing to Gary Barlow's record label.

0:20:340:20:37

Since then, A*M*E's been getting her music heard

0:20:370:20:39

by supporting the likes of Jessie J, The Wanted,

0:20:390:20:42

and now touring with JLS.

0:20:420:20:45

She's about to release her first commercial single, Play The Game Boy.

0:20:450:20:50

-First things first - make-up.

-OK. Do you think I need some?

0:20:530:20:57

I think you might need a little powdering.

0:20:570:20:59

-This is my lovely make-up artist, Heather.

-Nice to meet you.

0:20:590:21:02

Can we start from the beginning? When did it all start?

0:21:020:21:04

Probably when I was round about eight.

0:21:040:21:07

The transition from Sierra Leone to here. I was born in Sierra Leone.

0:21:070:21:11

Just discovering more music and like discovering different genres

0:21:110:21:14

and things that I didn't know existed kind of like musically.

0:21:140:21:18

How important are influences to you? People that you look up to.

0:21:180:21:21

I'm really a massive 90s pop head.

0:21:210:21:23

I look up to all the greats - people like Beyonce and Mariah Carey.

0:21:230:21:27

With someone like Jessie J as well - being able to tour with her

0:21:270:21:30

was the greatest thing ever because she is pop right now.

0:21:300:21:32

If someone's watching now, who wants to be a pop star,

0:21:320:21:35

what would you say to them?

0:21:350:21:37

I would say get into clubs definitely. Stuff like choir.

0:21:370:21:41

Choir was what made me where I am today.

0:21:410:21:43

I would say after school clubs - like singing lessons or dancing.

0:21:430:21:47

Every opportunity you get, just dive at it. That's what I think.

0:21:470:21:50

How about taking your hairbrush and singing in front of the mirror?

0:21:500:21:53

-I still do that.

-That's 100% the best way to become a pop artist.

0:21:530:21:57

As the crowd begin to arrive,

0:21:570:22:00

it's time for A*M*E to pick her costume.

0:22:000:22:02

-We need something bright that will pop out on stage.

-Yeah.

0:22:020:22:06

Most of my outfits are really bright and they go with my lips.

0:22:060:22:09

This is a nice little pink number.

0:22:090:22:11

It's like a little blazer

0:22:110:22:13

but like cut-off sleeves and it's got spikes.

0:22:130:22:15

Everyone needs a bit of spikes on stage.

0:22:150:22:17

I'll leave you to get changed.

0:22:170:22:19

-Thank you.

-I'll see you on your way to the stage.

-See you then.

-OK.

0:22:190:22:24

With a packed crowd waiting,

0:22:240:22:26

there's just a quick chance to ask the boys from JLS

0:22:260:22:28

if they have any tips on how to command such a large audience.

0:22:280:22:31

When you're out there and you see thousands of people, it's showtime.

0:22:310:22:35

Do you know what I mean?

0:22:350:22:36

All you can do is go out there, have fun and enjoy it.

0:22:360:22:39

The more you enjoy it, the more the audience will.

0:22:390:22:41

For us, we like to get totally mad and physical on stage.

0:22:410:22:47

We're jumping about, singing and dancing at the same time.

0:22:470:22:50

It involves for us a lot of outside training

0:22:500:22:53

as much as anything else.

0:22:530:22:55

No matter how good you get, you still get pre-show nerves, surely?

0:22:550:22:58

It's always a good thing to get nervous.

0:22:580:23:01

I don't think you should stop getting nervous.

0:23:010:23:03

As soon as you go out there, and you feed off the crowd,

0:23:030:23:06

and you're halfway through your first song,

0:23:060:23:08

usually your nerves have gone

0:23:080:23:09

and that makes you put on a better performance.

0:23:090:23:12

I'm keeping you obviously from getting ready for your big gig.

0:23:120:23:15

-You'd better get on there and get that crowd warmed up.

-Yes! Showtime.

0:23:150:23:19

-Thank you, boys.

-Have a good one.

-See you later.

0:23:190:23:21

With what feels like half of Lincoln out there,

0:23:210:23:26

it's time for 17-year-old Amy to dominate the stage

0:23:260:23:28

and become A*M*E - the popstar.

0:23:280:23:31

They sound ready.

0:23:310:23:32

Come on. Let's make some noise - come on!

0:23:320:23:35

Go wild for A*M*E.

0:23:360:23:38

-Good luck!

-Thank you.

0:23:380:23:40

-Let's do this.

-It's all yours.

0:23:400:23:42

I'm nervous and I'm just watching.

0:23:430:23:46

A*M*E.

0:23:470:23:50

# You can't stop me now Or hold me down... #

0:23:540:23:59

So amazing to see somebody who's so quiet back stage go on there

0:23:590:24:04

and just command that stage.

0:24:040:24:06

So confident for somebody so young.

0:24:060:24:08

If you're there sat thinking you want to be a popstar,

0:24:080:24:11

there's proof that you can do it.

0:24:110:24:13

All I'm going to say is watch this space. She was amazing.

0:24:150:24:19

You absolutely loved it. He said, "She ripped it up!"

0:24:190:24:21

Stop it! I'm trying to be cool and it's not working.

0:24:210:24:23

You can pull that sentence off, I'm sure you can.

0:24:230:24:26

Right, we are in the Radio One Live Lounge,

0:24:260:24:28

with the fabulous Carly Rae Jepsen.

0:24:280:24:30

We hope we've shown you today being a popstar is a fantastically glamorous life

0:24:300:24:33

but it can be hard work. Is that fair?

0:24:330:24:35

Totally worth it though, totally worth it.

0:24:350:24:37

So many questions for you on our message boards.

0:24:370:24:40

-We'd love it if you would answer them for us.

-Absolutely, yes!

0:24:400:24:43

Brilliant. It's an exclusive on the Blue Peter website so check them out.

0:24:430:24:46

Now though, it is time for Carly Rae Jepsen and Good Time.

0:24:460:24:49

Let's go dance.

0:24:490:24:51

# Woke up on the right side of the bed

0:25:020:25:06

# What's up with this Prince song inside my head?

0:25:060:25:10

# Hands up if you're down to get down tonight

0:25:100:25:13
