This is Jackanory Junior. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
Hello! I'm Jo. Have you heard the story of Rapunzel, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
the girl with beautiful long hair, who was locked in a tall tower | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
by an evil witch? Well, this is a seriously silly story | 0:00:27 | 0:00:32
that sounds something like Rapunzel. It's called Shampoozel. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
There once was a jolly hairdresser named Dan Druff. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
Dan loved hair. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
He loved the gleam of his mirrors | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
and the snippety-snick of his sparkling silver scissors. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Dan even sang about hair. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
# Hair, hair, glorious hair | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
# It spreads from your head Nearly everywhere | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
# It grows on your toes Even inside your nose | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
# Hair, hair...hair, hair. # | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Only one thing upset Dan's happiness - | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
his girlfriend, Tam O'Tei, who lived in the flat upstairs. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:18
Unlike Dan, Tam was a sad person, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
who hid away in her bedroom behind tightly drawn curtains. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
From under the hairdryers, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Dan's customers could hear her wretched moans. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
And Dan nearly tore his hair out with worry over her condition. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
The awful truth was... | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
Tam had terrible hair! | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
She wailed, "My head is dull and lifeless! | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
"I have a flaky scalp and unsightly split ends! | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
"But no ordinary shampoo is effective!" | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Dan could find nothing to help, and as the days passed, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
Tam's hair grew as greasy as a chip-shop mop. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Now, not far from the barber's shop | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
was an evil Black Tower, which twisted into the sky | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
like a strange hairstyle. This was the home of the Bad Hair Witch. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
High in her dark rooms, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
the Bad Hair Witch mixed strange shampoos and hair oils | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
which were sold all over the world. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
The secret ingredients came from rare plants, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
which grew only in her private garden. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
Above the barber shop, Tam became convinced | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
that one of these magical hair herbs would bring life back to her scalp, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:38
and she pleaded with Dan to pick some. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
At the mention of the Black Tower, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Dan Druff felt the hairs prickle at the back of his neck. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
"I dare not go there!" he whispered. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
"What if I should fall into the evil hairgrip of the Bad Hair Witch?" | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
But Tam complained so long and hard | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
that, at last, Dan could stand it no longer. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
"All right! Keep your hair on!" he bristled. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
"I will go to the tower and comb the gardens for the herbs!" | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
So, the next morning, the brave barber crept up the hairpin bends | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
that led to the tower. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
# Hair, hair, marvellous hair | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
# The poor can have more than a millionaire | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
# You might think that... # | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
"What on earth was that?" | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Before he could finish his song, Dan had almost walked into a huge sign | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
hanging on the wall before him. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
"Dan Druff, use your head | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
"If you open this gate You'll wish you were dead." | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
Dan felt a shiver run along his moustache. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
Only the thought of Sam's sad locks drove him on. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
CR-R-REAK! | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
Ignoring the sign, he scrambled into the Bad Hair Witch's garden, | 0:03:55 | 0:04:00
where he found a second sign - "Dan Druff, can't you read? | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
"Don't even think about nicking a weed." | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
Dan had never been in such a hairy situation, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
but he tried to stuff his pockets with herbs. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
Suddenly, before him, stood the Bad Hair Witch. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
"Dan Druff, you must be crazy! | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
"You'll pay for those plants with your very first baby!" | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
"B-B-But I don't have a b-b-b-baby," stammered Dan. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
"Let's not split hairs," snapped the witch. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
"I will wait until your first child is born." | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
Grabbing a handful of herbs, Dan haired down the hill to the town. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
He found Tam in her bedroom wearing a paper bag on her head. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
And he poured out the story of his terrifying brush | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
with the Bad Hair Witch. But Tam was barely listening. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
She seized the wonderful herbs, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
crushed them, and lathered her scalp. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
KAPOW! | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
As if by magic, Tam's hair turned into a glorious mass | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
of glossy curls. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
Tam was cured! She tore downstairs into the sunny shop, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
and as Dan shaved the bristly early-morning customers, | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
Tam happily set to work beside him, | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
sweeping up the fallen curls and locks. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
That very week, Tam and Dan were married, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
and the whole town joined them in this glorious hymn. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
# Hair, hair, magnificent hair | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
# It grows on your chest like a big woolly nest | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
# Hair, hair, haa-a-a-air. # | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
Before a year was out, the happy couple's happiness was complete. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
A beautiful baby daughter was born. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
And after much thought, they called her... | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
Shampoozel. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
But the Bad Hair Witch had forgotten nothing. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
High in her tower, she worked day and night | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
on her most amazing invention yet, | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
something all barbers dream of - | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
a marvellous, magical hair-growing lotion. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
"All I need is a helpless, hairless baby to test my invention!" | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
And so, the bad hair day dawned. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
-BELL RINGS -The bell in the little barber's shop tinkled cruelly, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:25
as the Bad Hair Witch burst inside. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
"Give me the child!" she shrieked. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
"Have you got an appointment?" said Tam. "Let's see. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:35
"I could fit you in Thursday." | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
"You don't understand, you fools! | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
"I need to test my new, improved formula - | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
"Ultimate 2-in-1 Hair-growing Lotion." | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
"Leave Shampoozel alone!" pleaded Tam. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
"You can't try your hare-brained inventions on our child!" | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
Ignoring the tears of the unfortunate couple, | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
the Bad Hair Witch seized Shampoozel and carried her back to the tower. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:04
To make sure the precious child would never be taken from her, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
the Bad Hair Witch bricked up the front door behind them. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
The days passed, and the Bad Hair Witch grew to love the baby | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
and looked after her as if she were her own. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
She would sing as she washed the baby's hair. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
# No more tears, baby Shampoozel | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
# My magic shampoo is very unusual. # | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
And day by day, as Shampoozel grew, her hair grew too, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:35
in great, long, golden tresses, | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
which tumbled across the floor, under the dog, round the fridge, | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
across the witch's table, and back upstairs again. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
"Hair-hair-hair!" cackled the Bad Hair Witch. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
"Look at all your beautiful golden hair!" | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
Sometimes hairy Shampoozel remembered her parents' barber shop | 0:07:52 | 0:07:57
in the town, far away. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Now that their daughter had gone, Dan and Tam worked sadly, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
and never sang any more. So, one by one, the customers went elsewhere. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:08
Many years passed, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
and as Shampoozel grew into a young woman, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
the bad hair witch taught her the secret art of the hairdresser. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
"Wash your hair and keep it sweet! Lather, rinse, repeat! | 0:08:20 | 0:08:25
"Run and comb and keep it neat! Lather, rinse, repeat!" | 0:08:25 | 0:08:30
Together, the Bad Hair Witch and Shampoozel created new hair products | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
which were more amazing than anyone could have ever dreamed of. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
They became so famous that a young prince called Gary Baldy | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
heard about them from his home in a distant land. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
The prince, although handsome and wealthy, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
was as bald as a billiard ball. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
Prince Gary had tried one wigmaker after another, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
but without satisfaction. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
So when he finally heard about Ultimate 2-in-1 Hair-growing Lotion, | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
he set out straightaway, and after many days, arrived at the tower. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:13
Even a prince cannot enter a tower without a door, | 0:09:13 | 0:09:17
so Prince Gary concealed himself beneath the walls, | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
and after a while, he saw an amazing thing. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
The Bad Hair Witch appeared at the window with her shopping bag. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
All of a sudden, a great mass of hair cascaded to the ground. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
The witch slid down it and set off towards the town. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
"I suppose that's what they call a hair slide," whispered Prince Gary. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
Half an hour later, the old lady returned, and called out, | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
"Shampoozel, Shampoozel! Let down your hair! | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
"So I can climb to the top of your long, hairy stair." | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
Shampoozel let down her locks again, | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
and the old woman scrambled back up the tower. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
Gary Baldy was no fool, and the next time the old woman went out, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:05
the prince stood below the window himself, and called, | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
"Shampoozel, Shampoozel! Your hair is so curly! | 0:10:08 | 0:10:13
"Let it hang down now! Be a good girly." | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
To his delight, a great coil of hair tumbled to the ground. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:20
He seized it, and began to BALDLY go where no man had gone before. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:26
The prince scrambled into Shampoozel's room, | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
and when his royal eyes fell on the lovely Shampoozel, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
he was captivated by her hairiness. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
He leaned towards her, and kissed her ruby-red lips. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
There and then, Shampoozel and the prince fell in love. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
Gary told her that he adored her limitless locks, | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
and how he would love to have some of his own. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
To his amazement, Shampoozel replied that she was tired of her hair. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:56
"It don't 'alf hurt when people climb up it," she complained. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
"And it takes a week to wash." | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
But then, to the prince's joy, | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
Shampoozel pulled out a bottle of Ultimate 2-in-1 Hair-growing Lotion, | 0:11:03 | 0:11:08
and began to massage his shiny scalp. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
Almost immediately, a single hair popped out of the prince's head. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:16
The first hair was followed by a second, the second by a third, | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
and within minutes, the prince had a mass of curls snaking down his back. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
Gary Baldy seized Shampoozel and danced with joy. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
"My prince! You must wash and go!" whispered Shampoozel. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
She brushed away some stray hairs from his collar, | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
and with one final kiss, the prince climbed down Shampoozel's hair, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
and slipped into the shadows. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
It wasn't long before the Bad Hair Witch returned. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
"Shampoozel, Shampoozel! Don't make me shout! | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
"Let down your hair, girl! Don't hang about!" | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
As soon as she entered the room, | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
the witch spotted Gary Baldy's little crown | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
that Shampoozel left hanging on the coat hook. The witch was furious, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
and after a terrible argument, stormed into her bedroom, | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
leaving Shampoozel weeping. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
The prince, meanwhile, had decided | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
that - witch or no witch - he had to see Shampoozel again. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
He stood at the foot of the tower, and whispered, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
"Shampoozel, Shampoozel! Here is your prince! | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
"Throw down your pigtail! My hair needs a rinse!" | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
Immediately, a long lock of hair curled out of the window | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
and tumbled to the ground. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
But just as the prince was about to climb up, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
he saw a figure sliding down. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
"Free!" It was Shampoozel. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
"I dunno why I didn't think of this before!" she said. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
"All that hair. I cut it off and tied it to the bed. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
"At last we've escaped from the Bad Hair Witch!" | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
"That was a close shave," replied Gary Baldy. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
So, Shampoozel and her hairy prince ran away to his castle. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
But she didn't forget her parents, Dan and Tam. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
Although they were rich, | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
Shampoozel and Gary Baldy liked to work in Dan's shop on Saturdays. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:12
Before long, the barber's shop wasonce again the busiest in the land. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:17
"It's amazing how the customers keep coming back!" laughed Dan. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
And it was true. Some of the customers | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
seemed to have as many as five haircuts a day! | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
Perhaps they loved having their hair cut by Shampoozel. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
Or perhaps her secret shampoo has something to do with it. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
High in her tower, even the Bad Hair Witch joins in. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:39
