Afternoon all! | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
Ricky here with your Saturday Newsround. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
We're live with all of this: | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
The first glimpse of Emily Blunt as the new Mary Poppins. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
The daredevils taking up icebiking. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
And spring is in the air in Japan. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:26
First to the story of a boy who, like thousands of children | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
from Syria, has travelled to a new country in | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
Europe to escape war. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Jenny went to Sweden to catch up with him to see | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
what life is like now. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Meet Kava. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
He is ten years old and likes football, music and bowling. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
And, like millions of kids across Sweden, he's off to school. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
But 18 months ago, Kava's life was very different. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:57
Kava and his family were forced to leave Syria because of a war that | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
has been going on there since 2011. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
Thousands of people have died and around 4 million people, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
like Kava, have had to leave the country to get | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
away from the fighting. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:12
Many people have made long journeys to countries in Europe | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
because they think they will be able to have a better life there. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
TRANSLATION: We left when it was evening and we were very | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
scared on the road. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
It was completely dark. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:33
Kava and his family travelled from Syria to Turkey | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
and then got on a boat | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
to make a dangerous journey across the sea to a Greek island | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
called Lesbos. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
TRANSLATION: We eventually took a small boat across | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
the sea to Europe. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
And we were very terrified. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
Newsround first met Kava in 2015, shortly after he had | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
arrived from Lesbos. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
TRANSLATION: I want to see my brother who lives in Sweden. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
He is already there and I want to join him. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
I miss him. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
And he got his wish. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
After getting a ferry to mainland Greece, Kava's family | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
travelled overland by bus all the way to Sweden. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
Kava and his family have been living in this very snowy town | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
for more than a year now. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
And Kava has even started going to his local school. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
So I have come to find out what his life is like now. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
TRANSLATION: I like the school. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
The school is good. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
There is no violence here. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
It is good here. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
I like Sweden. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
I like mathematics and doing my lessons. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
And writing on a computer, laptop or an iPad. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
I want to write. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Learning Swedish was difficult at first but later it | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
became easier, very easy. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
I have friends. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
They are very kind. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
They are good. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
My friends and I chase each other, run around | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and we slide our mattresses on the snow. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
Is there anything you miss about life with | 0:03:11 | 0:03:17
your friends in Syria? | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
TRANSLATION: My friends are not in Syria any more. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
They went to Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
They are not in Syria. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
I would like to meet them again. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
CHEERING | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
Although Kava is happy to be settled | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
with his family here in Sweden, I want to find out how | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
he feels about having to leave his home in Syria. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:40
TRANSLATION: In our old home, we used to play. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
We had a laptop, we had a large house with a large | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
garden when we used to play. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
But I don't remember much else. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
TRANSLATION: When the war broke out, everybody went in | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
different directions. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:01
Some left their mothers, others their fathers | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
or their brothers. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
Not many people stay together. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
TRANSLATION: We stuck together and held each other closely | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
so none of us would be left behind. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
That is why we remained holding each other so strongly. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
What are your hopes for the future? | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
TRANSLATION: Now I am with my brother, sister | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
and parents here together. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:24
We are very happy. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:25
It is nice here. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
I wish to continue going to school and study | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
and become something one day. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
For more about what's happening in Syria, go online | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
for Newsround's guide. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
Now I want to tell you about a sport that's got some people talking. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
Cycling on ice isn't normally a good idea, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
but "ice biking" is becoming a booming sport all over the world, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
especially in Scandanavia. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:52
Now it's arrived in the UK. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
The back wheels on an ice bike are replaced with blades and the aim | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
is to get round the course as quick as you can! | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
Next, do you recognise this lady? | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
Yes, it's the flying nanny Mary Poppins, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
played by Julie Andrews more than 50 years ago. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
Now Disney has released the first photo of the new-look Mary set to be | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
recreated by Emily Blunt. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
The British actress will be dressing in her navy coat and picking | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
up her patterned carpet bag for the sequel, which is due to be | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
released on Christmas Day next year. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:33
That | 0:05:33 | 0:05:33 | |
That is | 0:05:33 | 0:05:34
That is quite | 0:05:34 | 0:05:34
That is quite a | 0:05:34 | 0:05:34
That is quite a wait. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:35
Now, take a look at these pictures from Japan | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
where spring is in the air. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
Cherry flowers are in full bloom on a type of tree that blossoms | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
in early spring in Western Japan. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:43
Residents of this town planted around 1,000 of these trees over | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
the last 30 years to attract lots of tourists. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
Don't they look pretty! | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
And go online for loads more stories, including the twins helping | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
Nasa's research into the affects of space travel on the body. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
And the secrets of how elephants sleep. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
That's all from me, Newsround's back right here at around quarter to two. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01 |
