Evening, news fans. Hayley and Ricky in the studio for Tuesday's | :00:19. | :00:23.
Newsround. Sit back, because we've got loads to tell you about. Coming | :00:23. | :00:27.
Rescuers fight to save a whale stranded on the Lincolnshire coast. | :00:27. | :00:30.
Plus, we chat to the British athletics world champ who's already | :00:30. | :00:40.
:00:40. | :00:41. | ||
aiming even higher. Motivation isn't a problem. Obviously, I have | :00:41. | :00:45.
won every major Championship apart from the Olympics. I want to put | :00:45. | :00:48.
that right and get a gold medal in from the of the home fans. | :00:48. | :00:52.
But before all that, we're taking you back to the famine in East | :00:52. | :00:55.
Africa because for many people out there, the hunger crisis is getting | :00:55. | :00:56.
even worse. There's a warning that three- | :00:56. | :01:00.
quarters of a million people could die in the next few months unless | :01:00. | :01:02.
they get urgent help. It's especially bad in Somalia which has | :01:02. | :01:06.
also been torn apart by war. But a new radio show is trying to help | :01:06. | :01:09.
the most vulnerable people, and earlier today, I went to visit | :01:09. | :01:13.
their London studio. This special radio show is called | :01:13. | :01:17.
Rescue. It's hoped it'll be a lifeline to the millions of | :01:17. | :01:27.
:01:27. | :01:32. | ||
refugees in East Africa who are fleeing the famine. | :01:32. | :01:35.
These are the people they're trying to reach - families who have left | :01:35. | :01:43.
their homes in search of food and water. The team from BBC Somali | :01:43. | :01:45.
have been speaking to refugees and answering their questions, from how | :01:45. | :01:49.
to register at a refugee camp to bigger issues about the amount of | :01:49. | :01:51.
aid getting through. Many of these people do not know what to expect. | :01:51. | :01:54.
They're fleeing from famine, and in some cases, a conflict, but they | :01:54. | :01:57.
have never been to the new areas they're going to, and they have | :01:57. | :02:03.
never been in this situation, and we try to focus on what their needs | :02:03. | :02:12.
are. The problem in East Africa isn't getting any better - the | :02:12. | :02:15.
drought is worsening. And aid agencies say they still can't reach | :02:15. | :02:18.
some of the worst affected areas in Somalia because of on-going | :02:18. | :02:27.
fighting. But the real difficulty is reaching the Somalis. Not | :02:28. | :02:31.
everyone has a radio, and getting the message out there is proving to | :02:31. | :02:37.
be tough. When I visited Daadaab in Kenya - which is the biggest | :02:37. | :02:40.
refugee camp in the world - I noticed many people had mobile | :02:40. | :02:43.
phones. They're easy to get hold of and don't cost very much. Yusuf | :02:43. | :02:47.
told me he hopes to broadcast the show to mobile phones so that even | :02:47. | :02:49.
more people can get the vital information they need to survive. | :02:49. | :02:58.
Next to an incredible sea rescue. A 23-year-old woman has been pulled | :02:58. | :03:01.
to safety after falling overboard from a ferry 20 miles out at sea. | :03:01. | :03:04.
It happened last night on a crossing from Newcastle to the | :03:04. | :03:08.
Netherlands. These are the pictures taken from the RAF rescue | :03:08. | :03:12.
helicopter. It was pitch dark, and the woman was in the very cold | :03:12. | :03:15.
water for 20 minutes. But thanks to the quick thinking of the captain, | :03:15. | :03:18.
who reversed the ferry, she was found and bought back onboard. She | :03:18. | :03:21.
was then lifted to the helicopter and taken to hospital. She's now | :03:21. | :03:24.
back home - incredibly just suffering from the cold and | :03:24. | :03:26.
swallowing too much sea water. must have had some fairly slick | :03:26. | :03:30.
drills to get them out of the water in the time they did. You can't | :03:30. | :03:34.
imagine how difficult it is to find a head in the Black Sea, even with | :03:34. | :03:37.
all the equipment we've got. I think they did extremely well to | :03:37. | :03:39.
get her out in time. Rescuers have also been working all | :03:39. | :03:43.
day to try to free a young whale that got stuck on a shore in north | :03:43. | :03:46.
lincolnshire Things weren't looking good first thing this morning when | :03:46. | :03:51.
most of its body had sunk into mud. Over 50 people, including the RSPCA, | :03:51. | :03:55.
had to work fast to free the nine metre calf. And brilliantly, they | :03:55. | :04:00.
did it! The whale is now free and will hopefully be re-united with | :04:00. | :04:08.
its mother who was apparently spotted swimming nearby. Wildfires | :04:08. | :04:14.
are raging across Texas. More than 1,000 firefighters are trying to | :04:14. | :04:20.
contain it. Some are so fierce, it's proving impossible to control. | :04:20. | :04:27.
They're spreading and fast. This wildfire is now 16 miels wide and | :04:28. | :04:31.
has destroyed almost 1,500 homes. It's too big to tackle from the | :04:31. | :04:36.
ground, so helicopters have been called in. Texas has had its worst | :04:36. | :04:41.
drought for 50 years, so the dry land combined with high winds means | :04:41. | :04:45.
the fires are starting quickly. So far over 5,000 people have been | :04:45. | :04:51.
forced to leave their homes - some in a real hurry. There was a | :04:51. | :04:54.
volunteer fire department truck coming through on the loud speaker | :04:54. | :04:59.
telling everyone to evacuate now, coming up and down the street, | :04:59. | :05:04.
getting louder each time. It's surreal. You think about it. It's | :05:04. | :05:08.
in every board game you ever did - what would you do if you had 15 | :05:08. | :05:11.
minutes to evacuate? You never think it's going to happen to you. | :05:11. | :05:15.
Sure enough, it is. Firefighters are desperately trying to get the | :05:15. | :05:25.
:05:25. | :05:26. | ||
situation under control, but say the next 48 hours will be crucial. | :05:26. | :05:29.
Britain's medal winners are back home from the Athletics World | :05:29. | :05:31.
Championships in South Korea. They flew in last night. Mo Farah | :05:31. | :05:34.
returning a star after his brilliant gold in the 5,000 metres | :05:34. | :05:38.
and silver in the 10,000. Get used to seeing his face an awful lot | :05:38. | :05:39.
between now and next year's Olympics. | :05:39. | :05:43.
And we've managed to catch up with the other big winner of last week, | :05:43. | :05:46.
Dai Greene. He became the first Brit to win the 400 metres hurdles | :05:47. | :05:50.
in more than 40 years. You've got your medal with you. Let's have a | :05:50. | :05:55.
quick look at that. What will you be doing with that when you get | :05:55. | :05:59.
home? I don't know. I have only just got a new house, so I'll | :05:59. | :06:02.
probably stick it on the mantlepiece on display for everyone. | :06:02. | :06:08.
I don't want to leave it out of my sight for the moment. You looked so | :06:08. | :06:14.
calm crossing the line. You have to believe you will win. The way it | :06:14. | :06:18.
panned out wasn't perfect, but I was just happy to come away with | :06:18. | :06:22.
the victory. I always believed I could win. How do you stay fresh | :06:22. | :06:27.
and keep focused with around a year to go to the Olympics? I have a | :06:27. | :06:32.
tiger on my back after last week's exploits. I have to focus on my | :06:32. | :06:36.
training. I have a great coach, and he'll keep me on the straight and | :06:36. | :06:41.
narrow, he will. Motivation isn't a problem. Obviously, every | :06:41. | :06:45.
Championship is par for the Olympics, so I want to come away | :06:45. | :06:49.
with a gold medal in front of the home fans. Will you watching the | :06:49. | :06:55.
England-Wales game closely? course I will. I will be cheering | :06:55. | :07:00.
on Wales. My girlfriend is English. How does that work out? I cheer for | :07:00. | :07:06.
one team. She cheers for the other. Whoever cheers loudest wins. There | :07:06. | :07:13.
will be lots of shouting at the telly tonight. England and Wales go | :07:13. | :07:17.
head to head at Wembley. Despite being a massive 113 places below | :07:17. | :07:20.
England in the FIFA rankings, Wales manager Gary Speed's hoping his | :07:20. | :07:22.
side can upset England's Euro 2012 qualification. And England boss | :07:22. | :07:24.
Fabio Capello certainly isn't expecting an easy game. | :07:24. | :07:28.
It's a tough game because the Welsh are playing really well. I watched | :07:28. | :07:35.
the game as they played against Montenegro. They played really well | :07:35. | :07:42.
in the counterattack. It will be a really dangerous game. | :07:42. | :07:45.
And good luck to Scotland and Northern Ireland who have must-win | :07:45. | :07:47.
games against Lithuania and Estonia tonight too. | :07:47. | :07:52. |
