It's Friday, 7th December, and you are live with Newsround, Ricky and | :00:07. | :00:10.
Leah with you, guiding you through the day's big stories. | :00:10. | :00:12.
Coming up: Politicians in Northern Ireland | :00:12. | :00:16.
appeal for calm after the latest violence. | :00:16. | :00:25.
Why there are fewer partridges in pear trees this Christmas. | :00:25. | :00:28.
This is exciting, because we have always wanted to be on Newsround. | :00:28. | :00:38.
:00:38. | :00:48. | ||
We have all the news on the X First to Northern Ireland, where | :00:48. | :00:51.
politicians are appealing for calm after recent violence. It began | :00:51. | :00:54.
after a vote by councillors in Belfast to only fly the British | :00:54. | :00:57.
flag over the main council building on special occasions and not every | :00:57. | :01:01.
day. Today Hillary Clinton, who is America's foreign affairs minister, | :01:01. | :01:11.
has been in Northern Ireland. But what are the chances of a peaceful | :01:11. | :01:14.
solution? We have seen a lot of it lately on | :01:14. | :01:16.
bunting at street parties and around the shoulders of Olympic | :01:16. | :01:19.
medallists. The Union flag is a national symbol for the United | :01:19. | :01:21.
Kingdom, representing England, Scotland, Wales and Northern | :01:21. | :01:26.
Ireland. But this week, a decision to remove it from Belfast City Hall, | :01:26. | :01:34.
in the capital of Northern Ireland, sparked violent protests. | :01:34. | :01:39.
Here in Belfast, there are two broad groups of people, some who | :01:39. | :01:44.
want Ireland to be one country, Northern Ireland and the Republic | :01:44. | :01:47.
of Ireland altogether. There are others who want Northern Ireland to | :01:47. | :01:51.
remain part of the United Kingdom with England, Scotland and Wales. | :01:51. | :01:56.
For them, they are very angry when they look at Belfast City Hall | :01:56. | :02:01.
today and see the Union flag is no longer there. They regard it as | :02:01. | :02:04.
confirmation that they are part of the UK. They are angry that the | :02:04. | :02:09.
flag has gone and are determined to bring it back. The council voted to | :02:09. | :02:12.
only display the flag on a few special occasions a year. But for | :02:12. | :02:19.
the unionists who are protesting, that isn't good enough. | :02:19. | :02:24.
This is the latest in a long history of lock arguments over | :02:24. | :02:27.
centuries. Here in Belfast, there are two broad groups of people - | :02:27. | :02:30.
some who want Ireland to be one separate country, and others want | :02:30. | :02:34.
it to remain part of the UK. After 30 years of violence, in what was | :02:34. | :02:37.
known as the Troubles, leaders on both sides worked hard to find a | :02:37. | :02:39.
peaceful solution. In 1998, they signed the Good Friday Agreement, | :02:39. | :02:42.
which said they would run Northern Ireland together. Things have been | :02:42. | :02:45.
much better since, but the differences are still there and | :02:45. | :02:47.
this week's trouble shows how strongly some people still feel | :02:47. | :02:50.
about their national identity. Ministers in Ireland are working on | :02:50. | :02:52.
a plan to improve community relations, which would include | :02:52. | :02:55.
rules on how and where flags are displayed. But history shows it | :02:55. | :02:58.
will be difficult to make both sides happy. | :02:58. | :03:01.
To Japan now, where an earthquake has struck off the east coast of | :03:01. | :03:04.
the country. It triggered a metre- high tsunami, forcing people to | :03:04. | :03:08.
leave their homes. So far, there have been no reports of any deaths | :03:08. | :03:12.
or injuries. In March last year, the same coastline was hit by a | :03:12. | :03:22.
:03:22. | :03:33. | ||
much bigger earthquake and tsunami which killed nearly 20,000 people. | :03:33. | :03:36.
Christopher, James and Jermaine will battle it out to win the X | :03:36. | :03:39.
Factor this weekend. But it's not been an easy year for the TV talent | :03:39. | :03:41.
show, with falling ratings, contestant drop-outs, and claims | :03:41. | :03:45.
that it's all a fix! So we sent Hayley to find if the show's still | :03:45. | :03:52.
got the X Factor. It is a cold day and just one I | :03:52. | :03:59.
need something to warm me up... The X Factor final in Manchester! | :03:59. | :04:03.
It is the third year the X Factor final has been outside London, so | :04:03. | :04:06.
while I get cosy with the judges, it is a good time to find out who | :04:06. | :04:13.
they think will win. I am excited to see James. He is brilliant. I | :04:13. | :04:19.
would buy his album tomorrow. have looked Germain from day one. | :04:19. | :04:27.
Our I am just grateful to be here. I have enjoyed it showing I am | :04:27. | :04:31.
versatile. That is what music is about. Just do what you can with | :04:31. | :04:35.
what you have. The brother judges and contestants are warming up, | :04:35. | :04:40.
this year's ratings have not been so hot. We have seen the ratings | :04:40. | :04:47.
drop a bit. Have you any idea why? Is it your fault? Yes! You know | :04:48. | :04:52.
what, it goes up and down, but it is still a massive show. The X | :04:52. | :04:58.
Factor has aired six times over the weekend. Collectively, we get a 19 | :04:58. | :05:02.
million viewers. That is what the stars thing, but we will have to | :05:02. | :05:06.
wait to find out who takes home the final award. | :05:06. | :05:09.
"A partridge in a pear tree", goes the Christmas carol, except it | :05:09. | :05:14.
seems there are fewer and fewer partridges in any trees right now. | :05:14. | :05:17.
Or turtle doves, for that matter, that other bird mentioned in the | :05:17. | :05:27.
:05:27. | :05:27. | ||
song, as I've been finding out on a farm in Lancashire. | :05:27. | :05:31.
The classic festive Carol 12 braves of Christmas Features turtle doves | :05:31. | :05:41.
:05:41. | :05:45. | ||
12 they are two types of birds wildlife conservationists say are | :05:45. | :05:50.
facing disaster. These Christmas birds have seen major decline in | :05:50. | :05:54.
the past few years. There are concerns for the turtle dove. It is | :05:54. | :05:59.
now the UK's most endangered farmland bird. Experts say unless | :05:59. | :06:02.
something is done, it could be wiped out from the British | :06:02. | :06:06.
landscape. Her these birds need food, particularly in winter. They | :06:06. | :06:11.
need lots of seeds to feed on. And in summer, they need lots of | :06:11. | :06:16.
insects. Her the turtle dove is small, only slightly bigger than a | :06:16. | :06:20.
blackbird. They make a distinctive sound and you might have heard them | :06:20. | :06:25.
in the summer. And this is a grey partridge. Their numbers are also | :06:25. | :06:32.
down by 30%. The current population stands at around 43,000 pairs. Any | :06:32. | :06:38.
partridges on Milan today? I have not seen any today. We are putting | :06:38. | :06:42.
wild bird mix doubt, which is like having a bird table in your garden, | :06:42. | :06:49.
but on a far bigger scale. They will eat the seeds. The number of | :06:49. | :06:53.
wild birds on farmland has fallen by more than 50% in the past 40 | :06:53. | :06:57.
years. Conservationists say more needs to be done fast to make sure | :06:57. | :07:07.
our birds are protected. Sport now and UEFA - the | :07:07. | :07:10.
organisation that runs European football - has made big changes to | :07:10. | :07:13.
the Euro 2020 finals. Instead of being held in just one or two | :07:13. | :07:23.
:07:23. | :07:25. | ||
countries, the finals will be held in a number of cities across Europe. | :07:25. | :07:28.
Critics say the new idea will make it too expensive for fans to travel | :07:28. | :07:35.
and see matches, but our reporter says there will be some advantages. | :07:36. | :07:39.
Fans at first were a bit sceptical in terms of travel arrangements and | :07:39. | :07:44.
how they would make it from country to country. But of course, it gives | :07:44. | :07:47.
the opportunity for fans in different countries to see | :07:47. | :07:52.
different teams. It also gives football associations, the likes of | :07:52. | :07:56.
Scotland, Wales and Ireland, the chance to bid for something that in | :07:56. | :08:03.
the past, they might not have had the chance to do. | :08:03. | :08:06.
Now, just because you are one of the most famous names in music, | :08:06. | :08:10.
does not mean everyone knows who you are. That was what the rapper | :08:10. | :08:20.
:08:20. | :08:47. | ||
Jay-Z found out on a subway train That is all for now from the | :08:47. | :08:51.
Newsround team. Head over to the website to find our special Advent | :08:51. | :08:55. |
