Hi there, Ore and Hayley here for your Wednesday afternoon helping of | :00:17. | :00:20.
Newsround. On the way, we meet the broomstick brigade on Mission | :00:20. | :00:25.
Clean-Up after the riots across parts of England. And the Blade- | :00:25. | :00:31.
runner's Olympic dream moves one step closer. | :00:31. | :00:34.
But we start with the story we've been leading with all week. The | :00:34. | :00:37.
violence and looting which has been causing chaos in some parts of | :00:37. | :00:40.
England for four nights now. Today, Prime Minister David Cameron said a | :00:40. | :00:44.
fightback is under way. He said he's going to do everything in his | :00:44. | :00:47.
power to restore law and order and bring the people involved to | :00:47. | :00:49.
justice. The trouble began in London but now it has spread | :00:49. | :00:55.
elsewhere. As darkness fell, once again groups | :00:55. | :00:59.
of young people took to the streets. Not London this time though. Last | :00:59. | :01:02.
night, with thousands more police on the streets, the capital was | :01:02. | :01:07.
pretty quiet. But the trouble spread elsewhere. In Manchester, | :01:07. | :01:10.
these people ran through the city centre for hours, smashing windows, | :01:10. | :01:20.
:01:20. | :01:20. | ||
starting fires and looting shops. My message is extremely simple. | :01:20. | :01:26.
Hundreds and hundreds of people, we have your image, we have your face, | :01:26. | :01:31.
we have your acts of wanton criminality on film. We are coming | :01:31. | :01:37.
for you from today. There was also violence in parts of Liverpool, | :01:37. | :01:40.
Nottingham, West Bromwich and other places too. In Birmingham, three | :01:40. | :01:45.
men died after being hit by a car. It's being called copycat violence. | :01:45. | :01:48.
It's thought people, some as young as 12 and 13, have seen what's | :01:48. | :01:57.
going on and mindlessly decided to copy it. It is people being | :01:57. | :02:01.
interested on YouTube, Twitter, and saying, this looks fun, we can have | :02:01. | :02:07.
a go at this. They can break into the shop and no one will stop them. | :02:07. | :02:12.
There's probably not a lot going on in their minds, except for what can | :02:12. | :02:16.
I get to go on the streets with my friends and show off? Prime | :02:16. | :02:18.
Minister David Cameron today said police can start using tougher | :02:18. | :02:21.
measures to try and stop the trouble. And he gave his view on | :02:21. | :02:26.
why all this is happening. It is a complete lack of responsibility in | :02:26. | :02:30.
parts of our society. People allowed to feel that the world owes | :02:30. | :02:32.
them something. That their rights outweigh their responsibilities. | :02:32. | :02:37.
And that their actions do not have consequences. Well, they do have | :02:37. | :02:40.
consequences. Hundreds of people have been arrested. And the Prime | :02:40. | :02:43.
Minister also said that extra police officers will keep | :02:43. | :02:46.
patrolling the streets for as long as necessary to put an end to the | :02:46. | :02:53.
The Prime Minister has also said water cannons could potentially be | :02:53. | :02:57.
used to break up crowds if needed. They send out really strong jets of | :02:57. | :03:01.
water but have never been used before in England. The government | :03:01. | :03:04.
says that allowing them now shows how seriously it's taking the | :03:04. | :03:09.
situation. Hundreds of you have been getting in touch on the | :03:09. | :03:14.
Newsround website to tell us what you think. Natasha, who's nine and | :03:14. | :03:19.
from Manchester told us: "I couldn't sleep last night with all | :03:19. | :03:22.
the police and I could smell smoke from outside. Today is my birthday | :03:22. | :03:26.
and it's not safe to go out so my party has been called off." And | :03:26. | :03:29.
Alexandra, who's 13 and from Derbyshire, says: "My sister is a | :03:29. | :03:32.
special in the police. She said that it was very scary. I was so | :03:32. | :03:36.
worried about her." Thank you for all your comments. It's worth | :03:36. | :03:39.
remembering that the trouble's only been happening in certain areas, | :03:39. | :03:42.
not everywhere. If there are any problems near you, police advice is | :03:42. | :03:45.
to stay at home. And there's advice on our website about what to do if | :03:45. | :03:48.
you find the story upsetting. Across the country, volunteers are | :03:48. | :03:52.
busy cleaning up the mess caused by vandals. In parts of London, people | :03:52. | :04:00.
have taken to the streets, armed with more brooms than Hogwarts. | :04:00. | :04:06.
It started as an early call across the internet. By the afternoon, | :04:06. | :04:11.
many people turned up in Clapham in London using the latest technology | :04:11. | :04:15.
they organised to meet up and clean-up. I liked the fact the | :04:15. | :04:19.
community, although it's really bad, it is bringing the community | :04:19. | :04:24.
together. But everybody is showing we are going to stick up together. | :04:24. | :04:34.
The there is a lot of problems. James was running the show. We have | :04:34. | :04:38.
got guys are bringing out and doughnuts and coffee and tea. The | :04:38. | :04:41.
shops are letting us use their facilities as well. It started off | :04:41. | :04:46.
as a social networks thing. Looters and rioters threw bricks through | :04:46. | :04:51.
these shop windows, stealing the contents and then left to the mess | :04:51. | :04:55.
behind but now everybody is taking action. They have had enough and | :04:56. | :05:00.
want to see their streets back in order for I could stay at home and | :05:00. | :05:04.
watch it on the news and do-nothing or I could make something of my day | :05:04. | :05:10.
and to help and get involved in community spirits. Children of all | :05:10. | :05:18.
ages have been getting stuck in. have been cleaning up because some | :05:18. | :05:24.
body messed London upon. Nice one, Grace. Now, England | :05:24. | :05:26.
football fans were left disappointed as tonight's match | :05:26. | :05:30.
against the Netherlands was called off because of the riots in London. | :05:30. | :05:33.
But over in Birmingham, despite the trouble there have been plenty of | :05:33. | :05:37.
ecstatic England cricket fans around today. The match went ahead | :05:37. | :05:44.
as planned and England bowled India out earlier for just 224. At the | :05:44. | :05:51.
moment England have scored one for no wickets. England won the last | :05:51. | :05:54.
two Test matches, and if they win again they will be the number one | :05:54. | :05:58.
team in the world. The best team in the land, you might say. | :05:58. | :06:01.
And we'll stick with sport to finish because this guy, Oscar | :06:01. | :06:03.
Pistorius, or the Blade-runner as he's known, is fast becoming one | :06:03. | :06:08.
the biggest names in the world of athletics. He's already a | :06:08. | :06:10.
Paralympic champion, but he's now qualified for the World Athletics | :06:10. | :06:13.
Championships too, competing alongside able-bodied athletes. | :06:13. | :06:16.
He's the first amputee to run in the event. And that puts the South | :06:16. | :06:22.
African on track for the 2012 London Olympics. | :06:22. | :06:26.
It's a dream he's had for years. Taking to the track at the London | :06:26. | :06:30.
Olympic Games. And when Oscar Pistorius lines up for the 400 | :06:30. | :06:33.
metres at the World Championships later this month, he'll come a step | :06:33. | :06:37.
closer to turning that dream into reality. Oscar was born missing | :06:37. | :06:41.
some bones in his legs. So when he took up running, he was fitted with | :06:41. | :06:45.
carbon fibre prosthetic blades. Some say they give him an advantage | :06:45. | :06:50.
over able-bodied athletes. But Oscar reckons his speed is all down | :06:50. | :07:00.
to intensive training. I put in more hours, and overall, I think I | :07:00. | :07:03.
am a more diligent. No one denies it's incredible for a disabled | :07:03. | :07:07.
athlete to get this far, but not everyone think it's fair. It sets | :07:07. | :07:14.
an amazing achievement. There will be questions over whether it's an | :07:14. | :07:18.
level playing field between the able bodied and disabled athletes. | :07:18. | :07:20.
Able bodied and disabled athletes have competed together in other | :07:20. | :07:24.
sports before. But because Oscar has to run on blades, it's been a | :07:24. | :07:27.
controversial decision to allow him to run. But many feel he deserves | :07:27. | :07:34.
it. He works hard. You can see the determination each time he races. I | :07:35. | :07:39.
think he should be given the chance to compete. Oscar has taken tests | :07:39. | :07:43.
to prove his blades don't give him the edge. Now the world will be | :07:43. | :07:48.
watching to see if he can make it to the London Olympics in 2012. | :07:48. | :07:52. |
