Hello and welcome to Newsround. It's just gone 5.00pm. Hayley and | :00:09. | :00:15.
Joe here with all the day's news, including: Girls Aloud are back. | :00:15. | :00:19.
know what we have got and we hope everybody else loves it, as well. | :00:19. | :00:29.
:00:29. | :00:40. | ||
And, we go undercover at a duck But first, to a subject that we | :00:40. | :00:43.
talk about lots on Newsround - bullying. The charity ChildLine | :00:43. | :00:46.
says the number of children getting in touch with them to say they've | :00:46. | :00:50.
been bullied has gone up. Now they've hooked up with Facebook to | :00:50. | :00:55.
try and bring those numbers down. It's happening everywhere. On your | :00:55. | :01:01.
way to and from school, on the internet and on your phone. Child | :01:01. | :01:04.
Line say there's been a 34% rise this year in the number of children | :01:04. | :01:09.
saying they've been bullied and also an increase in bullying online | :01:09. | :01:12.
and your phone. It's thought one in four children of high school age | :01:12. | :01:17.
are affected. It's happening to some big stars, | :01:17. | :01:21.
too. Celebrities including Liam from One Direction have spoken | :01:21. | :01:31.
:01:31. | :01:37. | ||
How do you stop children being bullied? Well, Childline have | :01:37. | :01:41.
joined forces with Facebook and developed a new app. When you sign | :01:41. | :01:46.
up and click on you get advice and support if you are being bullied. | :01:46. | :01:50.
This app is a step in the right direction. We were pleased when | :01:50. | :01:53.
Facebook contacted us because of their reach, they have 30 million | :01:53. | :01:56.
active users in the UK, many of which are young people. Kids on | :01:56. | :02:01.
Facebook have to be over 13 to use it, so if you are under 13 and | :02:01. | :02:05.
still getting bullied what what can be done? We have a website which | :02:05. | :02:09.
has message boards and advice and information and it has online | :02:09. | :02:13.
counselling which is where you can speak directly with a counsellor | :02:13. | :02:16.
and our counsellors are trained to understand different issues | :02:16. | :02:21.
children go through. This year the number of children bullied has been | :02:21. | :02:24.
going up in one direction. It's hoped with celebrities like Liam | :02:24. | :02:27.
and the new app the numbers could soon be going down. | :02:27. | :02:30.
Well, earlier we asked Facebook how worried they are about online | :02:30. | :02:40.
:02:40. | :02:51. | ||
They say Facebook has no current plans to open up the site to under- | :02:51. | :02:54.
13s. If someone reports an underage account to us then we will remove | :02:54. | :02:57.
it, and try and prevent them signing up again. | :02:57. | :03:00.
Moving on, and in Afghanistan, a British soldier has been shot and | :03:00. | :03:03.
killed by a man dressed in Afghan army uniform. It happened yesterday, | :03:03. | :03:06.
on Remembrance Sunday, at an army base in Helmand province in the | :03:06. | :03:08.
south of the country. 438 British servicemen and women | :03:09. | :03:12.
have died in Afghanistan since 2001, but this year there's been a big | :03:12. | :03:18.
rise in attacks by Afghan soldiers and police officers. The BBC's | :03:18. | :03:20.
Caroline Wyatt, who's in Afghanistan, says there is little | :03:20. | :03:23.
doubt the attack was carried out by an Afghan soldier training with the | :03:23. | :03:30.
British Forces. Today there will be questions asked | :03:30. | :03:35.
and a lot of soul-sevening both among Afghan army but also in the | :03:35. | :03:38.
British Army here and widely at NATO as to what more can be done. | :03:38. | :03:41.
Both in the vetting process but also when people are working | :03:41. | :03:49.
closely together. Next - the BBC is one of the | :03:49. | :03:52.
biggest broadcasters in the world. It makes shows like Doctor Who, | :03:52. | :03:57.
Strictly and Deadly Sixty. And, also lots of news programmes like | :03:57. | :04:02.
BBC Breakfast, The One Show and, of course, Newsround. The organisation | :04:02. | :04:05.
is famous for being a trusted source of news all over the world, | :04:05. | :04:08.
but today it's at the centre of the news headlines itself. It all | :04:08. | :04:11.
started because one news programme made one of the worst mistakes | :04:11. | :04:14.
possible and accused someone of a crime they didn't commit. The head | :04:14. | :04:17.
of the BBC had to resign at the weekend and everyone's now talking | :04:17. | :04:21.
about what happens next. The British Broadcasting | :04:21. | :04:24.
Corporation brings us TV and radio shows watched and listened to by | :04:24. | :04:29.
millions of people in more than 200 countries around the world. It's | :04:29. | :04:33.
been broadcasting since 1922 and is paid for by everyone in the UK who | :04:33. | :04:40.
owns a TV through the licence fee. In return for that, the o promises | :04:40. | :04:43.
to make honest and trustworthy programmes. It's earned a | :04:43. | :04:47.
reputation for being one of the world's most trusted brands that's | :04:47. | :04:52.
why what's happening stphou so important. Two weeks ago, Newsnight, | :04:52. | :04:55.
a well-known BBC News programme, broadcast a report accusing a man | :04:55. | :04:59.
of a very serious crime. An accusation that has since turned | :04:59. | :05:04.
out not to be true. In newsround there are a team of journalists | :05:04. | :05:07.
working on each story, it's their job to check facts are right before | :05:07. | :05:12.
anything is broadcast in TV, radio or online. The programme that made | :05:12. | :05:15.
the mistake, Newsnight, this was not done and because of that the | :05:15. | :05:19.
whole of the BBC is in crisis. Programme-makers have apologised | :05:19. | :05:22.
for getting it wrong but that wasn't enough and on Saturday the | :05:22. | :05:29.
boss of the whole BBC, director general, George Entwistle resigned. | :05:29. | :05:32.
He felt responsible for such a serious mistake. Telling the truth | :05:32. | :05:37.
is hard, strenuous work and that's what we have the BBC to do and on | :05:37. | :05:43.
this one occasion it's failed. It can make it better. It can remedy | :05:43. | :05:46.
that but it's undoubtedly failed. It's a serious thing because it | :05:46. | :05:49.
breached its relationship with you, the audience. As a broadcaster, | :05:49. | :05:53.
paid for by all of us, the BBC is both well-loved and often | :05:54. | :05:57.
criticised by the British public who want the best from the money | :05:57. | :06:00.
they pay. After this scandal, people are demanding things change | :06:00. | :06:09.
so this kind of mistake doesn't happen again. | :06:10. | :06:12.
Now, go to any pond and you'll probably see people feeding the | :06:13. | :06:15.
ducks. But in Bolton ducks have been getting their beaks into an | :06:16. | :06:19.
unhealthy menu that's been making them ill. I've been to find how the | :06:19. | :06:24.
council there is fighting back. CCTV cameras are used to track | :06:24. | :06:28.
crimes and catch criminals around the world. They can target, focus, | :06:28. | :06:33.
and track in a matter of seconds. Nowhere are they more important | :06:33. | :06:37.
than here at this duck pond in central Bolton. The local council | :06:37. | :06:41.
have so fed up with people dumping their rubbish that they've taken to | :06:41. | :06:45.
installing spy equipment. The last thing we want is people dumping | :06:45. | :06:51.
their waste here and it was a problem from a fly-tipping point of | :06:51. | :06:56.
view, and also a health hazard for the ducks. This is the special spy | :06:56. | :06:59.
camera used to track criminals who are possibly tipping. It can be | :06:59. | :07:03.
used in the dark and used in the day. It can focus and it can track | :07:03. | :07:08.
and it's even a designed aerial that looks like a twig. Genius! | :07:08. | :07:13.
Since the CCTVs have been here they've spotted a number of tippers, | :07:13. | :07:16.
people dumping all sorts of rubbish, including food. The cameras have | :07:16. | :07:21.
even led to the arrest of this man after he dumped leftover takeaway | :07:21. | :07:29.
food and was fined over 200. curry is going to affect your tummy | :07:29. | :07:34.
after days, it will do same to the ducks. They could be infected, it's | :07:34. | :07:38.
going to bring rats and disease and could affect humans if that's lying | :07:38. | :07:42.
around ponds. If you want to feed ducks properly you can buy proper | :07:42. | :07:46.
food from shops or just use things like wheat or bird food. They're | :07:46. | :07:51.
happy to eat that and it's very good for them. Since installing the | :07:51. | :07:55.
cameras Bolton council have seen a decrease in the number of people | :07:55. | :07:59.
throwing rubbish and food in this pond. I must say, the ducks look | :07:59. | :08:03.
pretty healthy for it! They do. I thought bread is OK to | :08:04. | :08:08.
feed ducks? No, bread is bad for ducks. You should be feeding them | :08:08. | :08:16.
things like seeds and oats, things like wholegrain. Bread clogs them | :08:16. | :08:26.
:08:26. | :08:27. | ||
up. It's like fast food for ducks. Girls Aloud fans, listen up! It's | :08:27. | :08:30.
Children in Need this Friday and the girls are singing this year's | :08:30. | :08:33.
official single. The band recently announced their reunion to mark | :08:33. | :08:36.
their 10th anniversary. They've got an album out this month and a tour | :08:36. | :08:39.
early next year. The girls have been talking for the first time | :08:39. | :08:44.
about how it feels to be making music as a group again. To have our | :08:44. | :08:48.
music out there again, it's nerve- racking, you always worry how it's | :08:48. | :08:52.
going to be perceived. We know what we have got and we hope everybody | :08:52. | :08:57. |
