Good afternoon, Leah here with a packed show for you this Thursday | :00:00. | :00:07.
afternoon. Coming up: We hear YOUR stories about coping with the UK's | :00:08. | :00:17.
wild weather. It is quite hard to get to school. | :00:18. | :00:24.
And away from the weather, William and Harry do their bit to protect | :00:25. | :00:32.
wild animals. This is Newsround. Ellie in Berkshire and her family | :00:33. | :00:35.
have been making pancakes to give to the volunteers helping people in | :00:36. | :00:39.
their flooded town. Lol in Dorset has lost all the slate tiles off her | :00:40. | :00:43.
roof. And Charlene in Lancashire says they had a flood in their | :00:44. | :00:46.
garden last night. You've been sending in your stories today after | :00:47. | :00:50.
the UK was battered by more wild weather. | :00:51. | :00:53.
So let's bring you up to date. Engineers are trying to get power | :00:54. | :00:56.
back on for tens of thousands of homes after strong winds battered | :00:57. | :00:59.
the UK last night. Severe flood warnings, meaning a serious risk to | :01:00. | :01:03.
our safety, are still in place in south-west and south-east England. | :01:04. | :01:06.
In Worcester, the army's arrived to help people affected by the floods, | :01:07. | :01:10.
and the River Thames is expected to reach its highest level for 60 | :01:11. | :01:13.
years. Ayshah's been to meet Charlotte, a Newsround viewer living | :01:14. | :01:17.
right in the middle of it all in the Thames Valley. | :01:18. | :01:24.
This is not your everyday journey to school, but for Charlotte it is the | :01:25. | :01:30.
only way in or out of her home. I have come to see what it is like | :01:31. | :01:35.
to live with all of those. Charlotte, permission to come | :01:36. | :01:37.
on-board? Some places along the River Thames | :01:38. | :01:43.
are predicted to reach their highest levels for 60 years. Throughout | :01:44. | :01:48.
January steady rainfall has led to more flooding in some areas, because | :01:49. | :01:54.
the ground is saturated and the rivers are already overflowing. | :01:55. | :01:57.
And here in Runnymede Charlotte and her neighbours are having to get | :01:58. | :02:02.
used to the rising water. It's quite hard to get to school, and I cannot | :02:03. | :02:09.
walk in the water because it is too deep. | :02:10. | :02:15.
So which room are going into narrow? This is the lounge. We have put all | :02:16. | :02:22.
of our staff up on the sofas in case the water comes in. These are photos | :02:23. | :02:28.
are -- photo albums that we do not want to get wet. All the power has | :02:29. | :02:36.
gone so we have torches and candles in every room to move around in the | :02:37. | :02:42.
dark. There are about 30 houses along this road. A lot of people had | :02:43. | :02:46.
to leave the first time it begin is back it began at the beginning of | :02:47. | :02:52.
January. There is a big community spirit. | :02:53. | :02:55.
Although there is a break in the weather today, experts are warning | :02:56. | :03:00.
conditions in areas such as these could get worse, with heavy rain and | :03:01. | :03:03.
high winds expected across the UK. The Newsround website is the only | :03:04. | :03:07.
place to be for everything you need to know about this crazy weather. | :03:08. | :03:10.
Find out why the flood water just isn't running away. | :03:11. | :03:13.
We explain what started all this flooding in the first place. | :03:14. | :03:16.
And if you've been affected, you can send us your very own video message | :03:17. | :03:20.
that we might even show on Newsround! | :03:21. | :03:22.
Right, time to check out some of the worst affected places then, to see | :03:23. | :03:26.
how they're coping with the flooding and storms, starting in north-west | :03:27. | :03:34.
Wales. Roofs have been ripped off, trees | :03:35. | :03:38.
which lasted for centuries torn out of the ground. We may not see how we | :03:39. | :03:43.
came force gales batter West Wales again for some time, but weeks of | :03:44. | :03:49.
damage are beginning to show and I think people are simply fed up of | :03:50. | :03:55.
Britain's severe winter. This is a windy day in North West, | :03:56. | :03:59.
but nothing compared to the conditions last night. Anybody who | :04:00. | :04:04.
experienced those additions -- conditions would have expected to | :04:05. | :04:09.
wake up to conditions much worse than they are, but hopefully it will | :04:10. | :04:13.
get a lot of better by the end of today -- a log butter. | :04:14. | :04:20.
This is the new road, the water is too deep to let traffic through, but | :04:21. | :04:24.
the real problem is here. You can see just how much what -- water | :04:25. | :04:29.
there is, so much still coming down stream. | :04:30. | :04:32.
OK, let's put all the weather news to one side for now, because Princes | :04:33. | :04:36.
William and Harry joined their dad the Prince of Wales at a big meeting | :04:37. | :04:40.
in London today to push for more to be done to help protect elephants, | :04:41. | :04:43.
rhinos and other endangered animals in Africa. They're calling for | :04:44. | :04:46.
tougher action to protect animals from the illegal wildlife trade. | :04:47. | :04:49.
Every day, hundreds of elephants are killed for their ivory tusks which | :04:50. | :04:52.
are used in traditional medicines in places like China. Prince Charles | :04:53. | :04:57.
said there wasn't a moment to lose. They hope to draw up a worldwide | :04:58. | :05:01.
deal that will tackle the problem. Last up, to the slopes of Sochi - | :05:02. | :05:06.
and we all held our breath watching James Woods in the final of the | :05:07. | :05:09.
slopestyle skiing this morning. Check this out. | :05:10. | :05:13.
He was one of Team GB's biggest hopes of bringing home gold from the | :05:14. | :05:17.
Sochi Games. But it didn't quite go his way. He finished in a pretty | :05:18. | :05:22.
decent fifth place though. Whale watching from space? Sounds | :05:23. | :05:25.
bizarre, but head to the Newsround website to find out more. I'm back | :05:26. | :05:31.
at 6:50. Have a great afternoon and I'll see you then. Bye! | :05:32. | :05:36. |
