It's Thursday afternoon. Ayshah here with the biggest news and sport

:00:00.:00:09.

stories of the day. Coming up: A shocking discovery for scientists.

:00:10.:00:13.

And not many seats left - the latest on the battle of the backsides.

:00:14.:00:16.

This is Newsround. First up, Britain's Paralympic

:00:17.:00:23.

curling team have made it to the semi-finals of the competition.

:00:24.:00:27.

Aileen Neilson's team got through to the final four, despite losing their

:00:28.:00:30.

latest match to China, after other results went their way. This morning

:00:31.:00:34.

the GB curlers battled back from 5-1 down to beat the USA 8-7, in a

:00:35.:00:40.

nail-biting finish. Next, to the mystery that's baffled

:00:41.:00:46.

scientists for years. How do animals know to avoid electricity pylons?

:00:47.:00:48.

Well, a team of international scientists believe they've had a

:00:49.:00:52.

breakthrough and it's all down to UV light, something humans can't even

:00:53.:00:55.

see. Leah's got more on the shocking discovery.

:00:56.:01:01.

Electricity pylons are all over the UK. We know to avoid them because of

:01:02.:01:08.

how dangerous they can be. While wild animals learn to adapt to

:01:09.:01:12.

obvious dangers around them, like a busy road, how they knew how to

:01:13.:01:15.

avoid the static structure of a plyon was a bit puzzling for

:01:16.:01:25.

scientists. For many years it has been known that many mammals do not

:01:26.:01:30.

like going near roads or power lines. The roads were a barrier, but

:01:31.:01:35.

power lines were not. They could walk under But what they realised

:01:36.:01:39.

was that these UV lights, or sparks, filmed on a special camera, were

:01:40.:01:41.

scaring animals off. A power line with no problem. They

:01:42.:01:44.

tested almost 40 different species by showing them normal light and UV

:01:45.:01:48.

light, and found the UV light was most distracting.

:01:49.:01:50.

They also found more species than ever can pick up UV light, like

:01:51.:01:58.

reindeer and farm animals. What we want to do is to make the power

:01:59.:02:02.

industry aware of this problem so they can take this on board when

:02:03.:02:09.

they planned new power cables. So not only has an age old mystery

:02:10.:02:13.

been pretty much unlocked, it's also given electricity companies more

:02:14.:02:15.

information for planning where pylons are put up.

:02:16.:02:18.

Thanks, Leah. All this week on Newsround we've

:02:19.:02:21.

been showing you the ground-breaking technology behind the next wave of

:02:22.:02:23.

robots. Now, researchers are developing machines based on some of

:02:24.:02:26.

the smallest and fastest creatures on planet earth. Ricky went to meet

:02:27.:02:30.

the scientists who are creating robots by looking very closely at

:02:31.:02:31.

these. Ants. We have entered this new and

:02:32.:02:52.

exciting phase in robotics where the technology is taking inspiration

:02:53.:02:55.

from nature around us, and from us humans, too. We are now trying to

:02:56.:03:05.

make robots which will work in the real world, which is a messy, untidy

:03:06.:03:11.

place. The world is full of amazing animals and creatures who get on

:03:12.:03:14.

perfectly well in the real world. They provide us with not only

:03:15.:03:20.

inspiration, but fantastic designs. Tell us about the swarm. It is meant

:03:21.:03:27.

to behave like an ant. The collection robots are the entire

:03:28.:03:32.

colony of robots. It is designed to model the way that the ants forage

:03:33.:03:38.

for food. Some scientists argue there is not much point in basing a

:03:39.:03:43.

robot on a human being because we are too complex, so they turned

:03:44.:03:47.

their attention to robots inspired by biology, things like and is, a

:03:48.:03:56.

grasshopper, and even a flea. There are plenty of people still

:03:57.:03:59.

interested in robots that look and behave like people but many of us

:04:00.:04:03.

realise that most robots that we really need in the real world don't

:04:04.:04:06.

need to look like people and it's probably best if they don't.

:04:07.:04:10.

Head over to the website to see our amazing pictures of robots that have

:04:11.:04:13.

been inspired by animals. And while you're there check out the gallery

:04:14.:04:16.

of your techno-tastic robot designs you've been sending in.

:04:17.:04:18.

Next, all this week football pundits Alan Shearer and Robbie Savage are

:04:19.:04:22.

putting their bottoms on the line for charity, literally. The pair are

:04:23.:04:26.

having to race round to be the first to sit on half the seats in Wembley

:04:27.:04:30.

Stadium. That's 45,000 seats each. It's all for Sport Relief and

:04:31.:04:34.

they're trying to raise ?500,000. They have until tomorrow to finish.

:04:35.:04:37.

Good luck, guys! Finally, head over to the website to

:04:38.:04:41.

find out all about the battle over where the remains of Richard III

:04:42.:04:44.

should be buried, a story we've followed since the ancient king's

:04:45.:04:47.

remains were found in a Leicester car park in 2012.

:04:48.:04:51.

That's all. I'm back 6.50pm. See ya.

:04:52.:04:56.
