Hi, I'm Ricky with all you need to know this afternoon. Coming up on

:00:00.:00:07.

Newsround: Why scientists want to study kids to find out how they

:00:08.:00:14.

spread the flu. Why being the tallest building is all about what

:00:15.:00:17.

you've got on top. This is Newsround. OK, first up, we all get

:00:18.:00:25.

coughs and colds this time of year but getting the flu can be much

:00:26.:00:29.

worse. For the first time, scientists studying how flu gets

:00:30.:00:33.

passed around, want to hear from the people they say are likely to be

:00:34.:00:36.

spreading the disease the most kids! Here's Leah.

:00:37.:00:42.

Coughing, sneezing, fever and generally feeling under the weather

:00:43.:00:46.

- just some of the signs you could have flu. And while nearly everybody

:00:47.:00:53.

is well again after a few days of flu for people with conditions like

:00:54.:00:57.

diabetes, asthma or for older people it can be more serious. But go back

:00:58.:01:01.

nearly 100 years and flu was a massive killer. In 1918 the Spanish

:01:02.:01:11.

flu virus swept across the world. It was the most serious outbreak of a

:01:12.:01:15.

virus ever. That's why there's been lots of focus on preventing the

:01:16.:01:18.

spread of the flu. And scientists say the biggest spreaders of the

:01:19.:01:28.

virus are children. Children might be less worried about washing their

:01:29.:01:33.

hands, and throwing away their tissues. They might be more likely

:01:34.:01:36.

to sneeze on their buddies. And that's the trouble with flu. It

:01:37.:01:40.

passes very easily from one person to the next so if you bring it into

:01:41.:01:44.

school chances are others will catch it too. Flu is really contagious

:01:45.:01:52.

which means it is spread really easily and it is spread in small

:01:53.:02:00.

drops of fluid. So while the medical experts do their bit to understand

:02:01.:02:04.

how the flu virus gets passed between kids. Doctors are preparing

:02:05.:02:07.

to do battle as we head into the winter - when there's most flu

:02:08.:02:11.

around - and are giving a new type of vaccination. Good news if you

:02:12.:02:14.

really don't like injections - there's new nasal spray version

:02:15.:02:17.

being tried out in Scotland and parts of England - there's not a

:02:18.:02:20.

single needle in sight. Next, international aid has finally

:02:21.:02:23.

started arriving in the Philippines after last week's huge typhoon. A

:02:24.:02:26.

group of UK charities said this afternoon that a special appeal to

:02:27.:02:29.

the public has already raised ? 3 million in just over a day. The

:02:30.:02:32.

President of the Phillipines has said the number of people killed may

:02:33.:02:37.

not be as high as people had first thought. But bad weather and the

:02:38.:02:40.

scale of the damage has made it very difficult to get aid to those who

:02:41.:02:44.

have survived. Next up, what makes the tallest building - the tallest?

:02:45.:02:47.

One World Trade Centre isn't yet finished but the decision to declare

:02:48.:02:50.

it the tallest building in America has been a bit controversial. As

:02:51.:02:54.

I've been finding out, it's all about what you've got on top. For

:02:55.:02:57.

centuries, mankind has reached for the skies, searching for one goal:

:02:58.:03:00.

to build the tallest building on Earth. The title's changed hands

:03:01.:03:08.

plenty of times over the years. . In the space of just one year in

:03:09.:03:11.

America's New York City, first there was The Trump Building then it was

:03:12.:03:15.

The Chrysler building, and later the famous The Empire State building all

:03:16.:03:18.

claimed the title of world's tallest. But in the 1990s, tower

:03:19.:03:24.

designers discovered a little trick that would add a few cheeky metres -

:03:25.:03:31.

a mast! Suddenly, loads of tall towers had a mast on top - to take

:03:32.:03:35.

them that little bit higher! Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, the record was smashed

:03:36.:03:39.

time and again. But some people said it was cheating, and a mast

:03:40.:03:42.

shouldn't be counted in the height. It was such a heated debate - that a

:03:43.:03:46.

team was even set up to decide whether a mast counted or not! The

:03:47.:03:56.

catchily titled Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat are the

:03:57.:04:00.

guys who make the decision - and they've just said that the 125 metre

:04:01.:04:05.

mast that sits here...counts! So the One World Trade Centre might not be

:04:06.:04:09.

the tallest in the world - that s this one, Dubai's Burj Khalifa,

:04:10.:04:12.

nearly a kilometer high - but it's beaten Chicago's Willis Tower -

:04:13.:04:16.

whose masts DON'T count by the way - to become the tallest in

:04:17.:04:19.

America...and it's all thanks to a little old...well big old...mast.

:04:20.:04:22.

Last up. The slam dunk is probably the most impressive move in the

:04:23.:04:25.

whole of basketball, right? Yep until it goes wrong. Legendary

:04:26.:04:28.

American basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters were playing in

:04:29.:04:30.

Honduras last week when... OUCH Don't worry! He wasn't seriously

:04:31.:04:33.

hurt, but William 'Bull' Bullard certainly got a bit of a shock. He

:04:34.:04:38.

got a cut on his forehead but was able to get back on his feet. He had

:04:39.:04:43.

to sit out the rest of the match though. Lucky escape! Just time

:04:44.:04:49.

enough to tell you about a great story on the website about a rescued

:04:50.:04:53.

puppy that's climbed the world's highest mountain! I'm out of time,

:04:54.:04:55.

back at 6.50. Bye.

:04:56.:05:00.
