Hi, guys, the boys are back on set - Ricky and Ore with you for the | :00:20. | :00:23.
next eight minutes. You're watching Newsround. We've crammed all of | :00:23. | :00:27.
Tuesday's offerings into this bitesize show. This is all to come. | :00:27. | :00:32.
Ride along for the next chapter of my American roadtrip. | :00:32. | :00:35.
And Nel's been catching up with the stars of this year's Royal Variety | :00:35. | :00:38.
Performance. But first, they're supposed to be | :00:38. | :00:41.
best places to shop and meet your friends when you're in town, but | :00:41. | :00:46.
how buzzing is your high street? More than one in ten town and city | :00:46. | :00:49.
centre shops are empty, according a report earlier this year. Shopping | :00:49. | :00:52.
expert Mary Portas says so many people are now shopping online and | :00:52. | :00:57.
in shopping centres that many high streets are now deserted. She's put | :00:57. | :01:00.
together lots of ideas for the Government on how to bring them | :01:00. | :01:03.
back to life, including holding market days and more car boot sales. | :01:03. | :01:09.
Here's what she said she was hoping for. Whereas the High Street was | :01:09. | :01:13.
always just about shopping, that shopping has shifted into new areas. | :01:14. | :01:18.
We have the internet, these out-of- town malls. We should look at the | :01:18. | :01:22.
high street in a different way. Can you imagine if we put Jim's on to | :01:22. | :01:26.
the high street. Places where people go, but they normally go out | :01:26. | :01:30.
of town for. Well, earlier I headed down to | :01:30. | :01:33.
Altrincham in Greater Manchester to see if their high street is top of | :01:33. | :01:36.
the range or out of season. This is the type of high street | :01:36. | :01:41.
that Mary Portas is talking about. On this street I have counted about | :01:41. | :01:45.
six or seven shops that are abandoned and empty. In the last 30 | :01:45. | :01:49.
years a lot of shops have closed down, a bit like this one. Not many | :01:49. | :01:52.
people are turning up to do their shopping here any more. It is | :01:52. | :01:56.
Christmas in a couple of weeks and D Woods expect more people to be | :01:56. | :02:01.
here. Altrincham was beautiful at one time. Even with the market. It | :02:01. | :02:06.
is losing its heart. supermarkets are selling stuff so | :02:06. | :02:10.
cheap, everyone wants to buy it there. It is quite upsetting to | :02:10. | :02:14.
walk down the High Street. Altrincham is no different from any | :02:14. | :02:19.
other town in the country. There are large out-of-town retailers | :02:19. | :02:23.
setting up, p per large shopping on the internet. Fewer people are | :02:23. | :02:27.
coming into towns. What are you going to do to get more people back | :02:27. | :02:31.
into this town centre? We are looking at getting lots more small | :02:31. | :02:36.
to medium-sized independent shops back. We are looking to upgrade the | :02:36. | :02:41.
street to get restaurants and bars and leisure opportunities. We have | :02:41. | :02:46.
a market that has been here since 1290. So you would come here for a | :02:46. | :02:50.
day out. Now, young, funny and clever - the | :02:50. | :02:53.
characteristics a lot of people reckon helped Barack Obama become | :02:53. | :02:57.
President of the USA. But for many others, it was the colour of his | :02:57. | :03:00.
skin that made him stand out the most. He's America's first ever | :03:00. | :03:03.
black President and on my roadtrip to the States, I wanted to find out | :03:03. | :03:13.
:03:13. | :03:23. | ||
what that means to young people who Over the years, the USA has seen | :03:23. | :03:30.
big changes. 60 years ago, black Americans did not have the same | :03:30. | :03:33.
rights as white people. In some parts of the country, they were not | :03:33. | :03:38.
even allowed to vote, they were not allowed on some buses and many | :03:38. | :03:42.
African-Americans were turned away from shops and restaurants. Now it | :03:42. | :03:48.
is completely different. America has its first ever black President. | :03:48. | :03:54.
It is so overwhelming, so wonderful. Barack Obama has given young black | :03:54. | :03:59.
Americans hope. I wanted to head away from the sky could scrapers in | :03:59. | :04:02.
Chicago to find out what they think. -- skyscrapers. | :04:02. | :04:08.
We're heading to a place called Inglewood outside Chicago. It is | :04:08. | :04:17.
one of the poorer areas of the city. How much of a big deal is it for | :04:17. | :04:22.
you to have somebody like Barack Obama as your President? Having | :04:22. | :04:28.
Barack Obama as President sets a different image for us. Not just | :04:28. | :04:35.
for blacks, but also for the upcoming generation. It put small | :04:35. | :04:39.
fire in to me to learn and be successful. When I was little, I | :04:39. | :04:43.
was always a little kid that said when I wanted -- When I grow up, I | :04:43. | :04:46.
want to be the first black President. When he became President, | :04:46. | :04:53.
I thought damn! For you can still do it! These guys are all going to | :04:53. | :04:56.
college next year and they believe Barack Obama has played an | :04:56. | :05:02.
important part in changing their lives. Tomorrow we had to Detroit, | :05:02. | :05:06.
hit hard by the country's money problems. There are hundreds of | :05:06. | :05:09.
abandoned homes and factories. It is the America you don't usually | :05:10. | :05:14.
see. You have been a busy boy! | :05:14. | :05:17.
Altrincham one day, Ingle with the next. | :05:17. | :05:21.
-- Inglewood. Now to a show that's been going for | :05:21. | :05:24.
99 years and is still going strong - the Royal Variety Performance. | :05:24. | :05:28.
It's got lots of stars, it's got royalty and we get to see the best | :05:28. | :05:31.
bits on TV tomorrow night, but Nel just couldn't wait till then, so | :05:31. | :05:38.
she went in search of the stars backstage. I'm at the Lowry in | :05:38. | :05:43.
Manchester and although it has been a cold day, we have the best stars | :05:43. | :05:46.
coming here to the Royal Variety Show. | :05:46. | :05:50.
Some of the biggest names arrived from all over the world. Cee-lo | :05:50. | :05:58.
Green flew in from the States just for the show. I feel very | :05:58. | :06:04.
privileged to be a part of it. It is a warm and fuzzy feeling. | :06:04. | :06:07.
Green is used to the limelight, but it's extra special for one | :06:07. | :06:12.
performer, this year's Britains Got Talent winner. What does it feel | :06:12. | :06:16.
like to be here? It is a good feeling of accomplishment. To | :06:16. | :06:22.
realise you have come to show and now I'm getting the price for that. | :06:22. | :06:27.
It is pretty awesome. -- prize. of the added pressures is | :06:27. | :06:30.
performing in front of royalty, and this year it was for the Princess | :06:30. | :06:36.
Royal. The cast of singing in the rain. But getting royal approval | :06:36. | :06:42.
didn't worry everyone. You are magicians. You will be meeting the | :06:42. | :06:47.
Princess Royal. Her I guess we are. Are you excited? We are from the | :06:48. | :06:52.
USA so we don't really have Princess Royals. We will see how we | :06:52. | :06:56.
do. I like meeting everybody so it is nice meeting people from | :06:56. | :07:01.
different walks of life. I am looking forward to it. I just hope | :07:01. | :07:06.
she enjoys the show like everyone else. Although it she is the anyone | :07:06. | :07:10.
who gets in for nothing! Up But the thing that's kept the Royal Variety | :07:10. | :07:15.
show going for 99 years is, well, its variety. From what I've seen, | :07:15. | :07:20.
we're in for a spectacular show. Last up - had to show you a toilet | :07:20. | :07:25.
fit for a king...of bling! It's on display in Japan. Covered in 70,000 | :07:25. | :07:33.
crystals, it's worth 82,000. You'd have to be pretty flush to buy it! | :07:33. | :07:36.
Just before we go, toy shop Hamleys has stopped labelling its toys as | :07:36. | :07:40. |
