Hello and welcome to Newsround. I'm Hayley and I'm all on my own so | :00:25. | :00:29.
I've been working twice as hard to bring you a packed show. Here's | :00:29. | :00:32.
what's coming up. Counting the country - the results | :00:32. | :00:36.
of last year's Census are in. Do you need to splash cash on | :00:36. | :00:40.
expensive days out to have fun? You've been telling us what you | :00:40. | :00:43.
think. There are just 11 days left until | :00:43. | :00:47.
the opening of the Olympic Games in London. 10,000 athletes from every | :00:47. | :00:50.
corner of the world will be competing for the chance to win | :00:50. | :00:53.
gold. Today athletes started arriving with all their equipment | :00:53. | :00:56.
at Heathrow Airport and the Olympic Village which will be the home for | :00:56. | :00:59.
most of them has opened its doors for competitors to start checking | :00:59. | :01:08.
Years of preparation, hours of intensive training and miles of | :01:08. | :01:12.
travelling. It's the beginning of a challenge of a lifetime for | :01:12. | :01:15.
athletes arriving at Heathrow airport for the Olympics. Thousands | :01:15. | :01:18.
of competitors will be coming to London, each bringing hopes of | :01:18. | :01:23.
Olympic glory and some of them have some pretty unusual luggage too. | :01:23. | :01:25.
Airport staff have been warned to expect things like canoes, kayaks | :01:25. | :01:31.
and bows as each athlete brings the kit they need to take part. The | :01:31. | :01:38.
sailing team from USA were one of the first to arrive. It is my first | :01:38. | :01:44.
Olympic Games and it is a dream come true. I have been working at | :01:44. | :01:49.
this since I was seven years of age. The Olympic Village will house | :01:49. | :01:53.
around 16,000 people at its busiest time. 45,000 meals a day will be | :01:53. | :01:58.
prepared for all those hungry athletes. Organisers have had to | :01:58. | :02:00.
come up with one million pieces of sports equipment including 600 | :02:01. | :02:10.
basketballs, 356 pairs of Boxing gloves and 2,700 footballs. The | :02:10. | :02:17.
Olympic Park is a huge area the size of 357 football pitches. Over | :02:17. | :02:20.
the next month about 11 million people will turn up to watch the | :02:20. | :02:24.
world's top athletes compete. After seven years of work, it is finally | :02:24. | :02:34.
:02:34. | :02:37. | ||
BBC sports reporter, Katie Gornall, is lucky enough to be at the | :02:37. | :02:40.
Olympic Park. What has been happening today? It is quiet here | :02:40. | :02:43.
today. You get the sense that will change, of course, in 11 days time. | :02:43. | :02:47.
But there is a lot of the park that is sectioned off. It is not ready | :02:47. | :02:50.
just yet. There are areas that are a construction site and you see | :02:50. | :02:55.
people walking around with yellow vests and hard hats, but the big | :02:55. | :02:59.
news is that the athletes have been arriving to the village here, not | :02:59. | :03:03.
all of them had a smooth ride. We have heard reports of some of the | :03:03. | :03:06.
bus drivers transporting the athletes getting lost on their way | :03:06. | :03:13.
here from Heathrow Airport! One of the US team said on Twitter, he | :03:13. | :03:18.
said his bus had been lost for four hours. The athletes on board were | :03:18. | :03:21.
hungry and tired and he said it didn't make a good first impression | :03:21. | :03:26.
on him. Hopefully, that will change when he arrives here. | :03:26. | :03:30.
Thank you very much, Katie. Let's hope things change. | :03:30. | :03:35.
Now, can you think back to 27th March last year? Can't remember | :03:35. | :03:39.
what you were doing? Don't worry, neither can I! But chances are your | :03:39. | :03:42.
parents would have been filling in a Census form, along with millions | :03:42. | :03:45.
of other people. The Census is a massive survey which asks lots of | :03:45. | :03:48.
questions about the people living your house. It has taken a year to | :03:48. | :03:51.
go through the 26 million forms that were filled in and today they | :03:51. | :03:57.
have revealed the results. The big news is that the population of | :03:57. | :04:00.
England and Wales has shot up by a whopping 3.7 million over the last | :04:00. | :04:03.
ten years. It's the largest growth in numbers since records began and | :04:03. | :04:09.
brings the total number of people living here to 56 million. That | :04:09. | :04:12.
compares to just 9.4 million when the Census was first carried out | :04:12. | :04:16.
more than 200 years ago in 1801. The reason for the big rise is | :04:16. | :04:20.
partly down to people from other countries coming to live here. | :04:20. | :04:23.
These figures are just for England and Wales, the results for Scotland | :04:23. | :04:26.
and Northern Ireland will come out later, but they should help the | :04:26. | :04:29.
Government work out how much they need to spend on things like | :04:29. | :04:35.
It's the newest country in the world but South Sudan is facing big | :04:35. | :04:42.
problems. Thousands of people have had to leave their homes because of | :04:42. | :04:44.
fierce fighting on the countries border. The charity Save the | :04:44. | :04:48.
Children say that 2,000 kids a day are arriving at refugee camps, but | :04:48. | :04:50.
because of their location they can't get enough help to them. | :04:50. | :04:55.
Ricky has been finding out more. These were the celebrations last | :04:55. | :04:59.
year when South Sudan became independent from Sudan. Two big | :04:59. | :05:04.
wars had left the country as one of the poorest in the world. People in | :05:04. | :05:08.
the south hoped splitting up from the north would give them a chance | :05:08. | :05:12.
of a better future. At the time Leah spoke to Annette whose family | :05:12. | :05:15.
fled Sudan and moved to London because of the fighting, but a year | :05:15. | :05:22.
later, the situation in some areas hasn't got better, it's got worse. | :05:22. | :05:28.
My hope is that everyone is safe. A bad harvest this year means 2.4 | :05:28. | :05:31.
million people, a quarter of the country's population, won't have | :05:31. | :05:36.
enough food. Forces in Sudan have been clashing with troops from | :05:36. | :05:39.
South Sudan over who controls resources, like oil, along the | :05:39. | :05:48.
border between the two countries. Around 150,000 people had to leave | :05:48. | :05:53.
thavr homes because of the violence. Save the Children said 2,000 | :05:53. | :05:57.
children are arriving at refugee camps along the border every day. | :05:57. | :05:59.
Over half the people living in the camps are children, many of them | :05:59. | :06:03.
have been separated from their families, and had to walk for miles | :06:03. | :06:06.
to get here. It is difficult to tell what is | :06:06. | :06:10.
going to happen. The rainy season has started and heavy rains are | :06:10. | :06:17.
swelling the rivers so it is difficult for people to travel. | :06:17. | :06:21.
There maybe further influxz in the future so we need to stay prepared | :06:21. | :06:25.
for that. The United Nations is calling for | :06:25. | :06:35.
:06:35. | :06:41. | ||
more aid so they can help people in need. | :06:41. | :06:44.
Now most of you will be breaking up for the summer this week if you're | :06:44. | :06:47.
not on holiday already. But the charity Family Action is warning | :06:47. | :06:51.
that this year more of you may be sitting at home instead of doing | :06:51. | :06:53.
exciting activities or days out. It says more families are struggling | :06:53. | :06:57.
with money and need to spend less. We asked you for your tips on | :06:57. | :07:07.
:07:07. | :07:15. | ||
having fun on a budget and loads of Finally to get you in the mood for | :07:15. | :07:18.
the start of the Olympics the Newsround team have been tracking | :07:18. | :07:21.
down some of the country's top Olympians to ask them what it is | :07:21. | :07:26.
like to compete in the biggest sporting event on the planet. Today | :07:26. | :07:29.
it's the turn of Olympic silver and gold medallist sprinter, Darren | :07:29. | :07:38.
Campbell. I'm Darren Campbell and I competed in the 1996 Olympic Games, | :07:38. | :07:43.
the 2000 Olympic Games and the 2004 Olympic Games. In the 100 meters, | :07:43. | :07:50.
the 200 meters and the four by 100 meter relay. | :07:50. | :07:56.
In 2000, I remember the build-up to the 100 meters. I remember actually | :07:56. | :08:00.
arriving at the stadium and starting to warm up. It dawned on | :08:00. | :08:04.
me what I was about to take part in and it was the actual 100 meter | :08:04. | :08:08.
Olympic final. I started to think about the 110,000 people in the | :08:08. | :08:12.
stadium, all the billions and billions of people watching at home. | :08:12. | :08:19.
One of the most surreal feelings I've ever felt. In the final, I | :08:19. | :08:25.
came sixth. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, in the 200 meters I was | :08:25. | :08:30.
lucky enough to win silver. In the 2004 Olympic Games, as part of the | :08:30. | :08:36.
four by 100 meter relay team, I won Olympic gold. Every time I see the | :08:36. | :08:42.
three other guys who I won the gold with, it is like we were right back | :08:42. | :08:47.
in the stadium celebrating. It is a strange thing, but in life, it is | :08:47. | :08:51. |
