Hi, welcome to Newsround. Today sees the stars from the world | :00:00. | :00:11.
of pop do battle for a Brit. And tapeworms, leeches and head lice | :00:12. | :00:15.
- we meet the TV doctor who's infested himself with all of them! | :00:16. | :00:25.
First, we're going to Ukraine in eastern Europe, where violent | :00:26. | :00:27.
clashes have been going on overnight in the capital Kiev between police | :00:28. | :00:29.
and anti-government protesters. Riot police have been firing explosives, | :00:30. | :00:33.
trying to evict people from the main protest camp, which has been in | :00:34. | :00:36.
place since unrest began nearly three months ago. But protesters | :00:37. | :00:43.
have been fighting back against the police - at least 25 people have | :00:44. | :00:47.
died in this latest violence. The crisis started over whether Ukraine | :00:48. | :00:50.
should have closer ties with the European Union or with Russia. | :00:51. | :00:55.
Next, if you're like me, then last summer - the hottest for many years | :00:56. | :00:59.
- will seem like a long time ago. But here's a bit of good news. New | :01:00. | :01:04.
research out today suggests that last year's good weather was good | :01:05. | :01:07.
news for Britain's farmland butterflies. The Wider Countryside | :01:08. | :01:10.
Butterfly Survey recorded almost double the number of insects | :01:11. | :01:15.
compared with 2012. The report says that sunny weather provided perfect | :01:16. | :01:22.
breeding conditions for butterflies. Well, today is one of the biggest | :01:23. | :01:26.
dates in the calendar for British music, the BRIT Awards. Loads of big | :01:27. | :01:33.
stars from the world of pop will be at London O2's Arena, hoping to bag | :01:34. | :01:37.
a Brit. The likes of Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Rudimental and Lorde are | :01:38. | :01:41.
just some of those battling it out. And this afternoon, our very own | :01:42. | :01:44.
Ayshah will be down live on the red carpet bringing you all the latest. | :01:45. | :01:48.
Next up - leeches, tapeworms and head lice. Not the nicest companions | :01:49. | :01:52.
for most of us, but one TV doctor's decided to get a lot more closely | :01:53. | :01:55.
acquinted with them all! This is Dr Michael Mosley, a man prepared to | :01:56. | :01:58.
put his body through almost anything, all in the name of | :01:59. | :02:03.
science. In a new BBC documentary, he infests himself with a bunch of | :02:04. | :02:07.
gruesome parasites to see how they affect the human body. Jenny has | :02:08. | :02:12.
this one. Bloodsucking leeches, stomach | :02:13. | :02:14.
turning tapeworms and infectious head lice. Not the sort of thing you | :02:15. | :02:21.
would choose to have wriggling around your body if you could help | :02:22. | :02:28.
it. Unless you are this doctor! I had a go with various different | :02:29. | :02:32.
parasites. I started off with tapeworm. It was a little bit | :02:33. | :02:38.
disgusting, I have to say. They were like jelly babies but not very | :02:39. | :02:42.
sweet. Then I swallowed this camera with a glass of water. It sends | :02:43. | :02:48.
pictures to a transmitter and from there to a screen. So you can | :02:49. | :02:56.
actually see your stomach live. That is it! That is the tapeworm. You can | :02:57. | :03:08.
see it. God, that is horrible. Next up, leeches. I basically attached | :03:09. | :03:14.
back to my arm and it started to suck. It was actually quite pleasant | :03:15. | :03:18.
and it grew about eight times the size it was. It drank quite a lot of | :03:19. | :03:30.
blood and then it dropped off. They make nice pets. My daughter took my | :03:31. | :03:40.
leech and unfortunately it escaped after a few months and was eaten by | :03:41. | :03:44.
the cat. Doctor Michael says he is doing this to help scientists at | :03:45. | :03:47.
Salford University in their research into parasites and the diseases they | :03:48. | :03:50.
spread. So, after that, what did they learn? The message for me is | :03:51. | :03:53.
parasites are genius and fascinating. And a little bit | :03:54. | :03:58.
disgusting. It was a bad night for Manchester | :03:59. | :04:02.
City in the Champions League as they lost 2-0 at home to Barcelona. | :04:03. | :04:05.
Tonight, Arsenal take on reigning champions Bayern Munich. Gunners | :04:06. | :04:11.
boss Arsene Wenger has seen his side go out in the first knockout round | :04:12. | :04:15.
in the last three seasons. He's been weighing up his team's chances. We | :04:16. | :04:22.
know that we face the favourite of the competition and what we have is | :04:23. | :04:30.
believed, because on the opposite, we've had many big aims in the | :04:31. | :04:34.
champions league and the FA Cup, we played against Tottenham and | :04:35. | :04:39.
Liverpool. We know that in every single game, we have absolutely to | :04:40. | :04:43.
be 100%. Winter sports now, and it's a big | :04:44. | :04:46.
day in the curling, and an even bigger day for Team GB, with both | :04:47. | :04:50.
the men and woman's sides playing for a place in the final. Eve | :04:51. | :04:54.
Muirhead and co go up against Canada at 10am, whilst the men's side take | :04:55. | :04:57.
on Sweden at three o'clock this afternoon. | :04:58. | :05:01. |
