Good afternoon, friends. You are tuned into the right place at the | :00:24. | :00:27.
right time. This is Newsround. Ore and Leah here with everything you | :00:27. | :00:37.
:00:37. | :00:38. | ||
need to know tonight on the way. Will there be an Oscar for Uggie? | :00:38. | :00:41.
And spiders have been spinning something a little complicated. All | :00:41. | :00:45.
that to come, but first to the spectacular splashes of colour in | :00:45. | :00:48.
last night's sky. They're known as the Northern Lights, and for the | :00:48. | :00:54.
first time in ten years, they were seen in parts of northern England. | :00:54. | :00:58.
Powerful rays can interfere with navigation systems, NASA space | :00:58. | :01:08.
:01:08. | :01:11. | ||
crews and o sky systems. Splashes of green, Roads and streaks of | :01:11. | :01:13.
yellows, the earth's atmosphere coming to life. People travel | :01:14. | :01:17.
thousands of miles to catch a glimpse, the closer to the south or | :01:17. | :01:22.
North Pole you are, the better the view and now the latest storm that | :01:22. | :01:26.
causes the Northern Lights is so intense it's pushing the light show | :01:26. | :01:36.
further south. It was spotted in Northern Ireland, northern England. | :01:36. | :01:40.
This is all natural. How it happens is a bit like a science fiction | :01:40. | :01:44.
movie script. Here is the science bit. The sun shoots out a solar | :01:44. | :01:49.
blob like a bag of electrical jelly. It's charged and heading to earth | :01:49. | :01:55.
at about one million miles per hour. When it clashes with the earth's | :01:55. | :01:59.
magnetic shield, it pushes harmless currents that are floating above | :01:59. | :02:01.
earth deeper into the atmosphere around the north and South Pole | :02:01. | :02:06.
which makes the air glow like a flour res sent tube. Loads of | :02:06. | :02:13.
people were out to spot the rare light show -- flur es sent. | :02:13. | :02:19.
I saw this green constant light with an occasional white flicker | :02:19. | :02:23.
and it was quite strange because I wasn't too sure what it was at | :02:23. | :02:26.
first, then I figured out that it was the Northern Lights. Lots of | :02:26. | :02:30.
people are hoping for a repeat and if you weren't lucky enough to spot | :02:30. | :02:34.
anything in the sky, here's the good news - weather experts predict | :02:34. | :02:39.
more solar activity tonight. It's been ten days since the Costa | :02:39. | :02:42.
Concordia struck rocks off the coast of Italy. Rescuers are still | :02:42. | :02:47.
searching for people on board but today they started to remove two | :02:47. | :02:52.
million litres of fuel from the ship. It's a complicated operation | :02:52. | :02:56.
so Nel's been look at how they do it. When the Costa Concordia ran | :02:56. | :03:00.
aground, the main concern was rescuing people. But soon, | :03:00. | :03:05.
attention turned to the 1.9 million litres of oil still on board. If | :03:05. | :03:09.
the oil leaks out, it will have a massive impact on sea life and | :03:09. | :03:12.
plants. Ebs perts are still searching for people on the ship | :03:13. | :03:17.
but say the time's come for the oil to be removed -- experts. A barrier | :03:17. | :03:21.
has been put around the Costa Concordia to soak up any spills, | :03:21. | :03:28.
but how is the rest safely removed? A hole will be drilled into the | :03:28. | :03:32.
valves. They're closed like taps to stop oil getting out. After the | :03:32. | :03:35.
oil's heated, a pipeline is attached to pump it out, but they | :03:35. | :03:39.
need the weather to stay calm to avoid the ship moving. | :03:40. | :03:46.
At this stage, we don't see a big risk in oil spill, but if the | :03:46. | :03:50.
weather deteriorates, nobody can tell what the vessel will do. | :03:50. | :03:54.
Removing oil could take up to four weeks and experts will be keeping a | :03:54. | :03:57.
close eye on the Costa Concordia hoping she doesn't slip off the | :03:57. | :04:03.
rocks and sink all together. Thank you very much. Leah, did you | :04:03. | :04:06.
do cookery at school? Absolutely. The best thing was eating all the | :04:06. | :04:13.
stuff I made. Indeedy. I think we are on the same wavelength there. | :04:13. | :04:17.
Hungry people! Kids at one school in Manchester have been giving | :04:17. | :04:21.
their food away instead of feeding themselves! | :04:21. | :04:25.
This is Manchester Communication Academy. Today is cooking day. I | :04:25. | :04:28.
can already smell it. As well as polishing up their much-needed | :04:28. | :04:32.
skills in the kitchen, there's a bit more to this class. The kids | :04:32. | :04:37.
are making enough food to feed an army. They're not taking their food | :04:37. | :04:41.
home tonight, but to the local homeless shelter. This chicken | :04:41. | :04:45.
casserole is going to help feed the homeless people who otherwise | :04:45. | :04:50.
wouldn't have any food tonight. Chicken casserole tonight followed | :04:50. | :04:54.
by lemon drizzle cakes, made by the kids at this school. After the hard | :04:54. | :05:01.
work, they are ready to deliver. The Mustard Tree is a charity and | :05:01. | :05:05.
there are lots like these around all the cities. Volunteers run | :05:05. | :05:08.
these places and give up their time for free. The food certainly seems | :05:08. | :05:14.
to be going down a treat. How does this food help? It's been a great | :05:14. | :05:21.
help to me. Sometimes cooking for 30-70 people all the time is quite | :05:21. | :05:24.
hectic basically. The homeless people are very good food critics, | :05:24. | :05:28.
so if they didn't like it, they would tell you and I am not joking, | :05:28. | :05:33.
they are very, very graitful for the food -- grateful for the food. | :05:33. | :05:38.
How did the kids feel about helping out? I think it's superb and we | :05:38. | :05:42.
should do it every week. Other schools should do it as well. | :05:42. | :05:46.
been good because they can see what we do at school and it's been our | :05:46. | :05:49.
last lesson and we get the opportunity to come here to see how | :05:49. | :05:54.
happy the people are. The homeless are people too and we can't just | :05:54. | :05:57.
stuff our faces while they are starving. Tonight, these lot have | :05:57. | :06:00.
fed some of the homeless people in Manchester. But there are thousands | :06:00. | :06:04.
of people who don't have a home of their own all across the country | :06:04. | :06:08.
and they're not quite as lucky. These guys want their idea to | :06:08. | :06:12.
spread across all schools but it's certainly gone down well! | :06:12. | :06:16.
Thank you, Hayley. Now, film fans listen up, there's a month to go | :06:16. | :06:20.
until the biggest night of the year, the Oscars. A few hours ago, we | :06:20. | :06:25.
found out who is up for awards. Here is a run-down. This may look | :06:25. | :06:29.
like an awards ceremony. Actually, they are announcing the nominations. | :06:29. | :06:35.
This is the Oscars and for film stars and fanss, who is up for what | :06:35. | :06:40.
is big news. What does he do? a wind-up figure, like a music box. | :06:40. | :06:46.
Leading the way this year is Hugo, the 3D adventure is up for 11 | :06:46. | :06:50.
awards overall, including best film. Another favourite to win big is The | :06:50. | :06:53.
Artist, the silent black-and-white film is in the running for ten | :06:53. | :06:59.
awards, but thousands of people joined an online campaign to get | :06:59. | :07:02.
the dog a Best Actor nomination, but no such luck. | :07:02. | :07:07.
War-horse is also in the running for best film but no nomination for | :07:07. | :07:12.
its four-legged star Joey either. Looks like we'll have to wait | :07:12. | :07:16.
another year before an animal wins an Oscar. I have done battle every | :07:16. | :07:22.
single day of my life... Meryl Streep and George Clooney with | :07:22. | :07:25.
favourites for Best Actress and actor. And it could be a fight | :07:25. | :07:33.
between puss in bots and kung fu panda for best animation -- Puss in | :07:33. | :07:40.
Boots and Kung Fu Panda. It's big! Here is something even | :07:41. | :07:44.
bigger. Would you wear something made by spiders? I wasn't sure | :07:44. | :07:48.
until I saw this. Very good. It's the largest piece of cloth in the | :07:48. | :07:54. |
