Good afternoon! I'm Jenny and you're watching Newsround live on the CBBC | :00:00. | :00:09.
Channel. Coming up in the next six minutes... | :00:10. | :00:14.
We check out the Japanese island that keeps on growing. | :00:15. | :00:19.
The couple who had a big surprise on holiday. And I am in Canterbury were | :00:20. | :00:25.
these girls are making history. First, the Syrian government and | :00:26. | :00:37.
main opposition have met in the same room, along with world leaders, at | :00:38. | :00:40.
peace talks in Switzerland. The aim of the talks is to try and end | :00:41. | :00:44.
Syria's three-year civil war. The two sides sat face-to-face but | :00:45. | :00:47.
didn't talk directly to each other in the meeting which lasted half an | :00:48. | :00:50.
hour. They're due to meet again later today, where they're expected | :00:51. | :00:54.
to talk about how to help the Syrian people affected by the war. Next - | :00:55. | :01:14.
more heavy rain is on the way this weekend. And it could cause big | :01:15. | :01:17.
problems for areas already affected by the flooding. Things are really | :01:18. | :01:20.
bad in Somerset in the west of England. A massive area has been | :01:21. | :01:24.
underwater for the past three weeks. In this village, families are having | :01:25. | :01:27.
to use boats to get around. The council says it can't deal with it | :01:28. | :01:31.
alone, and could call in the military for help. | :01:32. | :01:34.
Next up - to the little bit of Japan that's popped up out of the sea, and | :01:35. | :01:38.
just keeps growing and growing! When a volcano erupted off the coast of | :01:39. | :01:42.
Japan in November it started to form a mini island - and it's still not | :01:43. | :01:45.
stopped. Take a look at this. When it started scientists thought | :01:46. | :01:47.
it would not last. They thought the tiny island would disappear within | :01:48. | :01:50.
weeks. But they were wrong and a month later it was three times | :01:51. | :01:53.
bigger. The little island even over to the island next door and it has | :01:54. | :01:57.
become so famous people started to think up names. One viewer has | :01:58. | :02:08.
called its would-be island. And you can see why. -- Snoopy island. It is | :02:09. | :02:22.
now so big, Japan is having to rethink the size of its country. And | :02:23. | :02:29.
it is getting bigger. And tennis has a new champion. | :02:30. | :02:32.
China's Li Na has won at the Australian Open for the first time. | :02:33. | :02:35.
The world number four seed beat Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets | :02:36. | :02:38.
in the Women's Singles final. Tomorrow, it's the Men's final, | :02:39. | :02:41.
Spain's Rafa Nadal will meet Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland. | :02:42. | :02:46.
Next up, one of the Premier League's biggest stars has officially swapped | :02:47. | :02:49.
Chelsea for Manchester United for a club record, thought to be ?37 | :02:50. | :02:52.
million. The Spanish midfielder Juan Mata is thought to be having his | :02:53. | :02:55.
medical today, before he officially signs for the team. | :02:56. | :03:02.
Next, for the first time in its long history, a girl's choir has been | :03:03. | :03:04.
created for Canterbury Cathedral. Girls from the surrounding area | :03:05. | :03:07.
auditioned to become members of the new choir and this evening they will | :03:08. | :03:11.
give their first performance at a service in the Cathedral. Nel has | :03:12. | :03:16.
been to see them in rehearsal. Canterbury has been an important | :03:17. | :03:19.
place of worship for the Church of England for more than 1000 years. | :03:20. | :03:22.
It's where the head of the church, the archbishop, is based and lots of | :03:23. | :03:31.
important services are held here. For hundreds of years the boy's | :03:32. | :03:34.
choir has performed at services in the cathedral. Now it's the girl's | :03:35. | :03:41.
turn, these 16 girls have been chosen from local schools to form | :03:42. | :03:45.
the first ever girl's choir. We have to prove that we are as capable as | :03:46. | :03:55.
the boys. I am excited. I am really excited. It is something I will | :03:56. | :04:02.
remember for the rest of my life. This is a very important rehearsal | :04:03. | :04:05.
ahead of their first performance. We are going to have lots of people | :04:06. | :04:10.
coming here to here does. What was it like the first time the girls got | :04:11. | :04:16.
together to practice? We'd knew there were some good quality voices | :04:17. | :04:23.
and I was bowled over. There were nerves, obviously. But nonetheless | :04:24. | :04:29.
they have put 100% into it and have enjoy that. | :04:30. | :04:34.
This choir will now perform in the cathedral on a regular basis. It's | :04:35. | :04:37.
an important change to the history of this amazing building. It is a | :04:38. | :04:40.
landmark occasion in that we are changing the formal singing in the | :04:41. | :04:47.
church. Everything about it is wonderful. | :04:48. | :04:54.
Now, I might not be an expert, but they're sounding pretty good to me. | :04:55. | :05:00.
Next time you're relaxing on your balcony on holiday, don't forget to | :05:01. | :05:03.
look behind you. Keep watching, if you can bear it. This Scottish | :05:04. | :05:06.
couple staying in America somehow didn't notice the hairy visitor in | :05:07. | :05:09.
the background. Luckily the pair - and the bear - were fine after their | :05:10. | :05:16.
adventure. And from bear cubs, to lion cubs! | :05:17. | :05:19.
These little guys are causing a big stir at San Diego Zoo in America. | :05:20. | :05:23.
The six-week-old brother and sister are doing really well, and are | :05:24. | :05:26.
growing up super fast, according to staff there. The pair are now | :05:27. | :05:28.
concentrating on important lion stuff, like learning to climb and | :05:29. | :05:31.
jump. And if you love animal stories, | :05:32. | :05:34.
there's a whole page on the Newsround website... Find out about | :05:35. | :05:37.
a brand new type of dolphin And check out a mysterious beaver in | :05:38. | :05:45.
