It's Monday 26th November. I'm Leah. And I'm Hayley, and we've got a | :00:08. | :00:11.
packed show for you this afternoon live from Newsround HQ in Salford. | :00:11. | :00:15.
Coming up. Wet and getting wetter. We'll | :00:15. | :00:23.
update you on the floods as the rain heads north. And I meant | :00:23. | :00:27.
Staffordshire by the River Trent which has burst its banks. Water | :00:27. | :00:33.
levels are continuing to rise. You tell us who you think should be | :00:33. | :00:36.
Sports Personality of the year. And McWho? We give the boys a | :00:36. | :00:46.
:00:46. | :00:55. | ||
memory test. This is Newsround. But first, to the bad weather that | :00:55. | :01:00.
just keeps on battering Britain. It's moving north, to the north | :01:00. | :01:03.
east of England and North Wales. Parts of the country are braced for | :01:03. | :01:05.
even more flooding as heavy rain continues to fall on ground that's | :01:05. | :01:10.
already soaked through. In the south west, many roads are | :01:10. | :01:13.
still blocked. Emergency services have been working non stop to | :01:13. | :01:19.
rescue people who'd got trapped. One family in Wiltshire said there | :01:19. | :01:25.
was nothing they could do to stop the water pouring into their house. | :01:25. | :01:30.
All we could do is stand and watch. And just mark the position of the | :01:30. | :01:36.
flood water to see if it was coming up or going down. When eventually | :01:36. | :01:43.
it did came in it came through the floor. And while some people are | :01:43. | :01:46.
mopping up in their homes, for others, the threat of floods has | :01:46. | :01:48.
not yet passed. The Environment Agency is the part of the | :01:48. | :01:51.
government that deals with flooding. They've put in place nearly 200 | :01:51. | :01:53.
flood warnings, where a flood is definitely expected, telling people | :01:53. | :01:57.
to take action. And nearly 300 flood alerts, telling people to | :01:57. | :02:01.
prepare, just in case. Ricky's been in Burton-upon-Trent | :02:01. | :02:04.
in Staffordshire, which has a flood warning in place, to see how people | :02:04. | :02:12.
are trying to protect themselves from the threat of rising water. | :02:12. | :02:17.
People here are on alert and are expecting heavy rain tonight. The | :02:17. | :02:21.
kind of whether it that can cause serious damage. A flood alert has | :02:21. | :02:26.
been issued in Burton-upon-Trent and a more serious flood warning | :02:26. | :02:30.
has been issued along the side of the River Trent, one of the major | :02:30. | :02:35.
rivers in England. That means river levels have been increasing and are | :02:35. | :02:39.
showing no signs of slowing down. Thousands of people here must | :02:39. | :02:43.
prepare themselves for the possibility of a flat. Water from | :02:43. | :02:47.
the River Trent has spilled onto the pavement and that is why the | :02:47. | :02:52.
Environment Agency have put flood defences in place. These are metal | :02:52. | :02:57.
fences which. The water from travelling any further. In the | :02:57. | :03:02.
distance you can see some park benches submerged in water. Been | :03:02. | :03:07.
prepared is essential. Today I watch a team of specialists put in | :03:07. | :03:11.
a barriers to make sure the water is contained. Instruments are | :03:11. | :03:16.
located on all rivers around the country and are measuring water | :03:16. | :03:20.
levels all the time. They set off alarms when they get to a level | :03:20. | :03:25.
which is starting to cause a problem. We always see people | :03:25. | :03:29.
putting the sandbags outside their homes. Where can people get these? | :03:29. | :03:33.
You can get them in the shops or perhaps from the local council. But | :03:33. | :03:40.
if not you can just fill up a shopping bag with soil from the | :03:40. | :03:45.
garden. Emergency services are urging people to be careful and not | :03:45. | :03:49.
risk their lives and to only travel if necessary. All the people here | :03:49. | :03:53.
can do is wait for the rain to pass and hope it does not cause too much | :03:53. | :03:58.
damage. Well, if heavy rain is coming your | :03:58. | :04:00.
way, it's best to be prepared so that you can help protect | :04:00. | :04:03.
yourselves, your pets and your homes. So head over to the | :04:03. | :04:06.
Newsround website for our top five tips on keeping safe in the floods. | :04:06. | :04:09.
Don't miss it! Leah, what was your sporting | :04:09. | :04:17.
highlight of 2012? Wiggo becoming the first British winner of the | :04:17. | :04:22.
Tour de France? That was pretty cool. How about Murray's first | :04:22. | :04:24.
major tennis title, and all those Olympic and Paralympic golds. Those | :04:24. | :04:29.
too. There's no doubting it has been an incredible year of sport. | :04:29. | :04:32.
And tonight the nominations for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year | :04:32. | :04:36.
award will be announced. I've been finding out who you guys think | :04:36. | :04:43.
should be in with a shout of winning. | :04:43. | :04:46.
Every year it won a sexual athlete is crowned BBC Sports personality | :04:46. | :04:56.
:04:56. | :04:58. | ||
of the year. -- a special athlete. It is going to be a tough choice. | :04:58. | :05:01.
Among the 12 contenders are three strong favourites. We have the | :05:01. | :05:10.
golden girl, Jessica Ennis. Long distance runner Mo Farah and of | :05:10. | :05:14.
course Bradley Wiggins. Who do you think should wind Sports | :05:14. | :05:19.
personality of the year? I think Jessica Ennis because she's really | :05:19. | :05:25.
fast. I think Mo Farah because he's good fun and the fastest runner in | :05:25. | :05:31.
Britain. Who do you think should win? I think it should the Andy | :05:31. | :05:40.
Murray because he has been going for years. I think the Paralympic | :05:41. | :05:44.
athletes should get the chance because they worked so well this | :05:44. | :05:52.
year. Do you remember last year, we had no women voted in a shortlist | :05:52. | :05:59.
for the award. Do you think it will be different this year? I do. They | :05:59. | :06:07.
have been amazing. Nicola Adams has done well in boxing. She got | :06:07. | :06:12.
mentioned a lot. These guys all over the want to win but we will | :06:12. | :06:16.
find out for sure who will make the shortlist tonight at 7 o'clock. We | :06:16. | :06:26.
:06:26. | :06:26. | ||
will find out the names of the 12 finalists at 7 o'clock. All day on | :06:26. | :06:30.
the website we have been asking you to get in touch with who you think | :06:30. | :06:40.
:06:40. | :06:51. | ||
should definitely make the shortlist. We had a lot of comments. | :06:51. | :06:53.
Emma in Greater Manchester says, "Wiggo definitely, he is so | :06:53. | :06:56.
inspiring and everyone loves his side burns! Wiggins all the way!" | :06:56. | :06:59.
But Will, all the way from Malaysia, says, "It's got to be Mo Farah, I | :06:59. | :07:02.
mean how awesome is he? He's just too cool, imagine GB without him - | :07:02. | :07:12.
pretty glum!" Let's talk showbiz now. So, one of them won Strictly, | :07:12. | :07:16.
another won I'm a Celebrity and now McFly have a new album out! Yes, | :07:16. | :07:20.
it's a busy time for the boys. And to make matters worse, we hit them | :07:20. | :07:24.
with a Newsround memory test! Serves them right for calling their | :07:24. | :07:34.
