Good afternoon. I'm Ricky, and on today's Newsround: More parts of the | :00:00. | :00:08.
country are under water as the rain just keeps on coming. | :00:09. | :00:11.
And the glow-in-the-dark technique that could help protect the world's | :00:12. | :00:12.
most endangered frogs. Stay tuned. First then, floods continue to cause | :00:13. | :00:23.
massive problems in parts of the UK, and for some people, the nightmare | :00:24. | :00:27.
is just getting worse. 14 flood warnings are in place throughout | :00:28. | :00:29.
England, which means flooding is expected. The area worst hit is | :00:30. | :00:37.
south-west England. It's particularly bad for people in the | :00:38. | :00:40.
county of Somerset, where huge amounts of water are having to be | :00:41. | :00:43.
pumped off the land and into rivers to drain away. Many people there are | :00:44. | :00:47.
still coming to terms with the flooding at the start of the year, | :00:48. | :00:51.
and more rain is forecast over the coming days. | :00:52. | :00:53.
We want to hear if you've been affected by the flooding. Have you | :00:54. | :00:57.
had trouble getting to and from school, or are there flood waters | :00:58. | :01:00.
near your house? Head online and let us know. | :01:01. | :01:02.
Next, services have taken place across the world today as part of | :01:03. | :01:05.
National Holocaust Memorial Day. It's to remember the six million | :01:06. | :01:08.
Jews and other people killed by the German Nazi party during the Second | :01:09. | :01:12.
World War, over 70 years ago. Ayshah's been finding out what it | :01:13. | :01:18.
all means. It's never easy to think about the | :01:19. | :01:22.
events of World War Two, but it is important to understand what | :01:23. | :01:25.
happened and make sure it is never forgotten. During the war, Germany | :01:26. | :01:28.
was ruled by the Nazis, a racist government led by Adolf Hitler. He | :01:29. | :01:31.
believed people from certain religions or races were inferior and | :01:32. | :01:36.
wanted to get rid of them. In what has become known as the Holocaust, | :01:37. | :01:39.
he had millions of people sent to special prisons called concentration | :01:40. | :01:44.
camps. Families were split up, there was little food, extremely hard, | :01:45. | :01:47.
physical work, and many, many people were killed there. It's estimated | :01:48. | :01:53.
seven out of ten Jews from across Europe died. But thousands of | :01:54. | :01:59.
children did manage to escape Nazi Germany and were sent to the UK for | :02:00. | :02:12.
safety. Today is a mark of respect for all victims of the Holocaust, as | :02:13. | :02:15.
well as victims of other mass killings around the world. Here at | :02:16. | :02:18.
the Imperial War Museum North, they're running special events for | :02:19. | :02:23.
Holocaust Memorial Day. Learning about terrible things that happened | :02:24. | :02:25.
in history, like the Holocaust, helps us to try to prevent them from | :02:26. | :02:31.
happening again. Well, let's speak to someone who can | :02:32. | :02:35.
tell us a bit more about this. With me now is Jack. He works with the | :02:36. | :02:39.
Holocaust Education Trust and teaches kids about what happened. | :02:40. | :02:41.
Jack, welcome to Newsround. Thanks for coming in. Why is it important | :02:42. | :02:49.
to remember the holocaust nowadays? Well, it was always stressed to me, | :02:50. | :02:54.
from a young age, how important the Holocaust was. At our trust, we | :02:55. | :03:00.
believe we have to give the 6 million Jews their humanity back. I | :03:01. | :03:06.
learning about the Holocaust, we can help to prevent such atrocities in | :03:07. | :03:10.
the future. When we see pictures like this, it is hard to imagine | :03:11. | :03:14.
things like this could happen. You have a personal connection to this. | :03:15. | :03:20.
Your grandad managed to escape. What was his story? He was able to come | :03:21. | :03:25.
over from his home in the Czech Republic when he was 10-year sold. | :03:26. | :03:31.
He couldn't speak any English. Unfortunately, his mother and two | :03:32. | :03:36.
sisters were not as lucky. How do children react to these kind of | :03:37. | :03:42.
stories? Whilst Holocaust education is becoming more and more broad, | :03:43. | :03:47.
children especially don't know as much about it. By listening to | :03:48. | :03:52.
survivors, they will. Thank you for coming in. | :03:53. | :03:54.
And if you want to know more, there's plenty of information over | :03:55. | :03:57.
on our website about this, as well as help and advice if there's | :03:58. | :04:01.
anything in the news that upsets you. | :04:02. | :04:03.
Next to outer space, where China's moon rover, Yutu, has hit a spot of | :04:04. | :04:07.
trouble. Jade Rabbit, as it's also known, has experienced mechanical | :04:08. | :04:09.
problems. The rover arrived on the moon's surface in December and was | :04:10. | :04:12.
expected to operate for three months, to carry out experiments on | :04:13. | :04:16.
the moon's soil. Now the Chinese space agency are having to organise | :04:17. | :04:19.
repairs - from back here on Earth! Now, time for some glow-in-the-dark | :04:20. | :04:21.
frogs. Check this out. Conservationists at Chester Zoo have | :04:22. | :04:25.
come up with a way to keep an eye on critically-endangered frogs by | :04:26. | :04:28.
injecting them with a harmless fluorescent substance, making them | :04:29. | :04:31.
glow. Experts say they hope the tracking technique can be used to | :04:32. | :04:35.
help species that are most at risk. Last up - fancy wading through | :04:36. | :04:38.
freezing muddy water before crawling under barbed wire? No? Me neither. | :04:39. | :04:43.
But some people love it. The weekend saw the annual Tough Guy race in the | :04:44. | :04:46.
West Midlands, where thousands of competitors had to scramble their | :04:47. | :04:49.
way around 200 obstacles. Head to the website to see a gallery of how | :04:50. | :04:54.
they got on! That's all we've got time for. We | :04:55. | :04:58.
are back later on this evening. See you then. | :04:59. | :05:00. |
