Hi, I'm Leah with your morning Newsround. On today's show. Viking

:00:00.:00:11.

warriors take over a town in Scotland... Sort of. And another big

:00:12.:00:15.

freeze hits parts of America. This is Newsround.

:00:16.:00:21.

First, a big education report out this morning says a quarter of young

:00:22.:00:26.

people in poorer countries can't read a single sentence. That's

:00:27.:00:31.

millions of children who can't read or write. The United Nations is now

:00:32.:00:35.

calling on the world's governments to give these kids the chance to go

:00:36.:00:38.

to school. Nel's been looking into it. This girl is 12 and lives in

:00:39.:01:07.

Lahore, Pakistan. She has been studying at this school for the past

:01:08.:01:11.

three years, but doesn't know how much longer she'll be here.

:01:12.:01:17.

TRANSLATION: My father doesn't want me to learn. He thinks it's not a

:01:18.:01:20.

good thing for girls to study. I have to fight in everyday to come to

:01:21.:01:26.

school. That's because in Pakistan, girls are treated very to boys and

:01:27.:01:31.

poor children are treated very differently to rich ones. I've come

:01:32.:01:35.

to a girls school in Manchester. I'm here to meet a girl who studies in

:01:36.:01:39.

the UK but who visits her family in Pakistan every year. She understands

:01:40.:01:44.

how different school life can be in the two countries. Education here is

:01:45.:01:48.

much better. Just the opportunities you can have. Although life is very

:01:49.:01:54.

different, both girls have the same dreams for the future. I want to

:01:55.:01:57.

have the education to have a good job. My dream has always been to be

:01:58.:02:05.

a doctor. Father doesn't think I can do it but I want a job, that's all.

:02:06.:02:09.

And you can see Nel's full report into that over on our website, right

:02:10.:02:13.

now. Next, some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees will be

:02:14.:02:16.

allowed to come and live temporarily in the UK. Deputy Prime Minister

:02:17.:02:19.

Nick Clegg says those most at risk including disabled, the elderly and

:02:20.:02:22.

women and girls will get priority. The Government haven't set a target

:02:23.:02:26.

of how many refugees will come to the UK but expect it to be in the

:02:27.:02:31.

hundreds. In America, more arctic weather has caused chaos in the

:02:32.:02:34.

Midwest, with schools closing, airlines cancelling flights and

:02:35.:02:37.

emergency crews working to dig out major roadways. Many motorists

:02:38.:02:41.

trying to travel spun off the road or slid into snow banks. In Ohio,

:02:42.:02:45.

high winds created "snow rollers", which are coils of snow whipped up

:02:46.:02:52.

by the 40mph gusts. In the normally warm Southern states, a state of

:02:53.:02:55.

emergency has been declared as they prepare for a severe winter storm

:02:56.:02:59.

too. To warmer places and just an hour or so ago, England retained the

:03:00.:03:04.

Women's Ashes in Australia. They needed to win the first Twenty20

:03:05.:03:08.

match to win the series. England won by nine wickets, with captain

:03:09.:03:10.

Charlotte Edwards hitting the winning runs to finish a brilliant

:03:11.:03:15.

innings of 92 not out. The men play their first Twenty20 in Hobart after

:03:16.:03:21.

8am this morning. A big night in the Premier League saw Liverpool smash

:03:22.:03:24.

their local rivals Everton 4-0 in the Merseyside derby. Reds captain

:03:25.:03:27.

Steven Gerrard scored after 20 minutes and Daniel Sturridge

:03:28.:03:30.

followed up with two more before half-time. Man United also won last

:03:31.:03:34.

night, but Arsenal were held to a draw. Luis Suarez picked up a fourth

:03:35.:03:38.

to leave his side in fourth place, and please his manager, Brendan

:03:39.:03:44.

Rogers. The mentality was very focused coming into this game. We

:03:45.:03:49.

understood that could have been implications for our Champions

:03:50.:03:53.

League aspirations. So to go four points clear against one of our

:03:54.:03:56.

rivals was very important. The players coped with that pressure

:03:57.:03:59.

really well. Meanwhile, Premier League leaders Arsenal dropped

:04:00.:04:02.

points in the title race as they were held to a 2-2 draw by

:04:03.:04:05.

Southampton at St Mary's. Adam Lallana scored the equaliser after

:04:06.:04:08.

Arsenal scored two quick second half goals to go 2-1 up. For boss Arsene

:04:09.:04:12.

Wenger it was a simple reaction the the final score. It's a point. We

:04:13.:04:24.

regret I have is that at 2-1, they were quickly caught back to 2-2.

:04:25.:04:28.

Last up, just enough time to show you some amazing pictures of people

:04:29.:04:32.

dressed as Vikings! It was the Up Helly Aa festival in Scotland's

:04:33.:04:35.

Shetland Islands. Every year local people carry torches through the

:04:36.:04:37.

town of Lerwick to celebrate the islands' Viking heritage, before

:04:38.:04:40.

throwing their torches onto a pretend Viking ship to make a big

:04:41.:04:45.

fire. Head to the website to check out more pictures.

:04:46.:04:56.

We've got a gallery of snowy scenes in America, too. Check that out.
