victorious in Round 1. From Hungary, Maria Celeng triumphed in Round 2.

:00:15.:00:21.

Last night, Olena Tokar, from the Ukraine, reigned supreme. Who will

:00:21.:00:27.

be named as our five finalists? Tonight, we find out. Only 20 made

:00:27.:00:33.

it to Cardiff. They are following winners including Roberto Di Matteo,

:00:33.:00:36.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Angel Cabrera. They came to Cardiff as

:00:36.:00:43.

virtual unknowns, now they're opera superstars. It really launched my

:00:43.:00:49.

career. It's where everything started. We're still counting.

:00:49.:00:55.

here, they face a daunting panel of judges, including the competition's

:00:55.:01:01.

patron, the edge endary soprano, Paolo Di Canio. To have that name

:01:01.:01:05.

attached to yours, I wouldn't mind it. For the winner, it's a launch

:01:05.:01:12.

pad to the world of operatic stardom. Two years ago the young

:01:12.:01:15.

Moldovan soprano, Valentina Nafornita, took the Crown. My sister

:01:15.:01:21.

was calling me. She was asking me, "what, you are the Sing of the World

:01:21.:01:28.

now? You are? I cannot believe it." Who will win this time? By Sunday

:01:28.:01:38.
:01:38.:02:10.

Tonight, the last of the prelip near rounds of Cardiff sin singer. By the

:02:10.:02:14.

end of the evening we will know the names of the five young performers

:02:14.:02:21.

who have made it through to the Sunday's final. We had a great night

:02:21.:02:28.

here yesterday. My guest, Mary King, talked of the "bar being raised."

:02:28.:02:33.

"Things are hotting up" was the view of Nicholas Payne, Chairman of the

:02:33.:02:43.

jury. The deserving winner was a terrific Ukranian soprano. Mary is

:02:43.:02:50.

with me again. Joining me is baritone, Tommi Hakala winner of BBC

:02:50.:02:53.

Cardiff Singer of the World 10 years ago. Welcome back. Did the

:02:53.:02:57.

competition have an immediate impact? It did. It opened an

:02:57.:03:06.

international mark in quite a huge sense. Also that the opera world and

:03:06.:03:11.

music world got interested. Regrets that you entered? Not at all. I'm

:03:11.:03:17.

enjoying still the prize and the trophy. Mary, you said that it will

:03:17.:03:26.

trophy. Mary, you said that it will be a wonderful programme? Yes. It

:03:26.:03:31.

will be very interesting. We have taste, refinement, fire and mystery.

:03:32.:03:36.

Great. Have had three round winners this week. I guess they are tiebl

:03:36.:03:42.

relax tonight. They are here. They with are with Josie. Jamie, you are

:03:42.:03:52.

in the audience, does that mean you are relaxed? Oh, no. I'm excited to

:03:52.:03:55.

sit in the audience and see my colleagues do their best. You have

:03:55.:04:00.

gotten to know the other singers, will you watch as a rival or as a

:04:00.:04:10.
:04:10.:04:28.

friend? Well both maybe a little bit. I'm crossing my fingers very

:04:28.:04:35.

much. I like it. Autumn the best to all three of you tonight. Have one

:04:35.:04:40.

more Round winner to crown. These three have faced our jury and come

:04:40.:04:50.
:04:50.:04:53.

out victorious. Let us mean the important decision makers. Nicholas

:04:53.:04:58.

Payne, Dame Felicity Palmer. We have to say, is this person actually

:04:58.:05:07.

ready to go. Tenor, Neil Schicoff. They have to bring us into their

:05:07.:05:17.
:05:17.:05:18.

world. Casting manage manager Maren Hofmeister. And Paolo Di Canio?

:05:18.:05:28.
:05:28.:05:41.

the moment of the wow factor, you think, ah, they have just nailed it.

:05:42.:05:47.

I like them to take risks. You can call a winner as well. Later in the

:05:47.:05:52.

programme details of how you can vote in the Dame Joan Sutherland

:05:52.:05:58.

Audience Prize. Will your favourite be one of tonight's singers? Let's

:05:58.:06:08.
:06:08.:06:10.

meet them. Ben Johnson, a tenor from England. Daniela Mack a

:06:10.:06:20.
:06:20.:06:21.

mezzo-soprano from Argentina. Jeongcheol Cha from south Korea a

:06:21.:06:27.

bass-baritone. And Romano from Italy a soprano. To start everything off,

:06:27.:06:33.

Michal Partyka a baritone from Poland. Michal Partyka lives in

:06:33.:06:39.

Paris he has been a member of the National Opera since 2009. He has

:06:39.:06:43.

performed all over the world. Singing wasn't his first passion.

:06:43.:06:48.

begin with piano. My mother send me to music school. Then I was too

:06:48.:06:56.

lazy. I had a choice to play tuba object to sing. At the beginning I

:06:56.:07:01.

thought, singing is simple. They too took me to opera studio in Paris.

:07:01.:07:06.

Someone told me there is an addition for this competition. What a

:07:06.:07:12.

surprise when you get the email saying you are in? I had my Italian

:07:12.:07:18.

class. I received email. "You are going to represent Poland" my

:07:19.:07:28.
:07:29.:07:32.

teacher was mamameya. Much water under the bridge since Michal

:07:32.:07:42.
:07:42.:07:44.

Partyka got that email. Now, he is on stage here in Cardiff. He opens

for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013. Tommi and Mary are here. Mary,

:17:20.:17:23.

you have been having Korngold moments this week, was that another?

:17:23.:17:29.

Nearly. Not quite. I love what he does to sing within himself. He

:17:29.:17:35.

tries really brave colour choices, but they don't always come off. We

:17:35.:17:40.

need more resonance at the bottom of the voice, to be honest. Beautiful

:17:40.:17:44.

artistic sensitive things. He doesn't push. It a focussed voice

:17:44.:17:53.

for you a fella baritone He has a beautiful voice. I would like to

:17:53.:17:58.

also hear the body, to get it through the body. The whole body

:17:58.:18:01.

working. Sometimes you got a little clue about that. I would like to

:18:01.:18:06.

hear it more. We will talk about looks later. He looks great? He has

:18:06.:18:14.

wonderful cheek bones. He is very, very slight. Incredibly slight body.

:18:14.:18:19.

He will grow into that voice. go backstage. You Opened with the

:18:19.:18:24.

Mozart. Did you feel the audience appreciating that? A lot. They are

:18:24.:18:29.

amazing. They support me when something doesn't feel so good, you

:18:29.:18:34.

feel there is a good energy. enjoy your performance overall?

:18:34.:18:39.

Yeah. It was a bit difficult. You know, for a show like this it's

:18:39.:18:46.

always great pleasure to sing it. huge pleasure to listen to you, I

:18:46.:18:55.

assure you. Thank you very much. You may have a favourite competitor who

:18:55.:19:00.

may or may not have given the jury pleasure. You can express your

:19:01.:19:06.

support by voting for them in the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize,

:19:06.:19:12.

named after the much-miss missed soprano who was a loyal jury member

:19:12.:19:16.

and later pat Ron of this econvenient. Here are details of how

you can vote for those who appeared in the first convert Round of BBC

rounds throughout the programme. If you have missed any of the

:20:06.:20:10.

competitors or want to refresh your memory, you can catch their

:20:10.:20:14.

performances on the BBC iPlayer. There is an aria from each

:20:14.:20:19.

competitor on our website. Join the discussion on Twitter using the

:20:19.:20:23.

hashtag Cardiff Singer. The A rule change this year means there can be

:20:23.:20:27.

more than one entrant from each country, next our second English

:20:27.:20:37.
:20:37.:20:43.

singer of the competition. Tenor, Music in London and is a young

:20:43.:20:50.

artish at English National Opera. You didn't grow up around classical

:20:50.:20:56.

music, you introduced yourself to it? I heard classical music as a

:20:56.:21:02.

young kid. It got me in my stomach and heart. I thought - what is this?

:21:02.:21:06.

Once you have that rush you never want to let it go. I'm getting a

:21:06.:21:10.

nice picture of a young man in love with classical music. Did that

:21:10.:21:15.

isolate you in anyway? It wasn't always easy, especially as I got

:21:15.:21:18.

older, I found it more difficult to cope with the bullying and things

:21:18.:21:22.

like that. Muse sick a great companion for those sort of

:21:22.:21:30.

situations. I never felt totally isolated in retrospect because I

:21:30.:21:36.

always had music. We have never an English or indeed British winner at

:21:36.:21:43.

Cardiff Singer. Could this be the year things change? It really is

:21:43.:21:53.

time that Benedict settled down. He stage. I will ask my guests about

very contained. A fantastic from the audience here at St David's

:32:03.:32:07.

Hall. He was going to audition for Cardiff Singer two years ago, but

:32:07.:32:12.

managed to break his leg very badly on the way to a rehearsal. He said

:32:12.:32:18.

he wasn't ready then anyway, but feels that 2013 has much more hope

:32:18.:32:28.
:32:28.:32:30.

for him. A lovely tenor sound there? Yes, beautiful voice. Beautiful way

:32:30.:32:35.

of using that, my opinion a little bit lack of support, support

:32:35.:32:38.

connection with the party with the voice. Could bring the most of it

:32:38.:32:46.

out. But very beautiful. It's interesting how he focuses on

:32:46.:32:50.

Italian repertoire? He has a good track record. That is a very big

:32:50.:32:54.

house. You must remember that the orchestra there will be in the pit.

:32:54.:32:58.

They are not on the stage, not fighting the space with you. It is

:32:58.:33:03.

harder to Carrie over the orchestra when they are alongside you.

:33:03.:33:09.

delighted he included that song by Frank Bridge. A brave decision. It

:33:09.:33:15.

starts very quiet? It's an atmosphere song. Personally, I

:33:15.:33:22.

agreed a lot to hear something that is not the every day repertoire.

:33:22.:33:32.
:33:32.:33:33.

us go backstage and join Ben Johnson with Josie. You said to Daniela

:33:33.:33:39.

Mack, "have fun", did you have fun? I think so, yes. What other feelings

:33:39.:33:44.

did you experience up there during your performance? I was quite

:33:44.:33:50.

involved with what I was doing, which I suppose is a good thing.

:33:50.:33:56.

When that happens I can't quite remember what came out. I enjoyed

:33:56.:34:01.

the performance very much. The audience was lovely. The Bridge

:34:01.:34:08.

seemed to go down a treat? It is is a gorgeous piece. I had to do it. I

:34:08.:34:13.

didn't quite sing it as well as I have done. I wanted people to hear

:34:13.:34:20.

it, I think it is so beautiful. did it proud. Thank you very much.

:34:20.:34:27.

Thank you Josie. Now, for more phone numbers. Your chance to vote for

:34:27.:34:33.

:35:44.:35:53.

appear with the San Francisco Opera later this year. Welcome to Cardiff

:35:53.:35:57.

Singer of the World. Thank you.The reason we are ballroom dancing is

:35:57.:36:02.

because you used to teach ballroom dancing? A little bit. I taught

:36:02.:36:07.

beginners, I loved it. I believe you met your husband at one very special

:36:07.:36:14.

ball, didn't you? Cindrella's ball. We were doing a production and he

:36:14.:36:20.

was Prince Charming. I was the leading lady. O, there you both are.

:36:20.:36:26.

What a strikingly handsome couple you are. Will he be in the audience?

:36:26.:36:33.

I don't know. He is so close. He is in the UK. I hope he makes it here.

:36:33.:36:42.

Think her husband is here. He was given a ticket. Daniela Mack begins

by Gluck. Orpheus off to Hades to mezzo-soprano, Daniela Mack,

:48:10.:48:19.

resident now in San Francisco. Performing with the orchestra of

:48:19.:48:26.

Welsh National Opera and conductor Graeme Jenkins. The trouser role,

:48:26.:48:34.

woman performing as a man. What a wonderful audition that was? Shi is

:48:34.:48:39.

fantastic. She is an artist already. It's not all about the singing, it's

:48:39.:48:43.

about the whole thing. To take the stage with that control. Honestly,

:48:43.:48:52.

it brought a tear to my eye. It was just such a bravery, such boldness.

:48:52.:48:57.

Fantastic top to bottom. Fantastic technique. With it all, this spirit,

:48:57.:49:02.

this power and spirit and love to get that music out there. I do think

:49:02.:49:12.

it's worth mention that everybody it to begin with. To take that simple

:49:12.:49:17.

song and make this atmosphere, it was just, you could have heard a pin

:49:17.:49:23.

drop. It was fantastic. I have nothing to add. I enjoyed. That is

:49:23.:49:30.

the way to sing. Let us meet her again. She is backstage. Tremendous

:49:30.:49:34.

audience response there, how do you feel? It feels great to do it in

:49:34.:49:39.

front of an audience. Having practiced those pieces over and all

:49:39.:49:44.

with the piano and by myself and have it with the orchestra it was

:49:44.:49:48.

awesome. You gave your all?We are all here to do that, right? If not

:49:49.:49:54.

here, where else? Thank you very much. Mary is reaching for her

:49:54.:49:59.

tissues here. It's not over until the Fat Lady Sings they used to joke

:49:59.:50:03.

about opera singers, the reality today is different. Mary has been

:50:03.:50:10.

exploring how the look of singers has changed greatly in recent years.

:50:10.:50:14.

30 years ago opera singers came in all shapes and sizes, but the

:50:14.:50:19.

expectation was that the majority of those singers would be large. The

:50:19.:50:22.

common assumption was that the bigger the body, the bigger the

:50:22.:50:32.
:50:32.:50:32.

voice. The voice, primarily, was what mattered. Over the span of BBC

:50:32.:50:36.

Cardiff Singer things have changed. There is now a greater emphasis on

:50:36.:50:46.
:50:46.:50:48.

acting and also on looks. The last two winners have both had movie star

:50:48.:50:56.

glamour. The stars of today must offer even more, with opera now

:50:56.:51:00.

accessible through a multitude of media. This is partly to do with

:51:00.:51:05.

marketing. There are other factors. Theatre and cinema directors have

:51:05.:51:11.

branched out into opera and are demanding more naturalistic and

:51:11.:51:21.
:51:21.:51:31.

consumption, perhaps you shouldn't be 18 stone! The new trend of hi-def

:51:31.:51:37.

anythings, live relays of operas into cinemas has created an even

:51:37.:51:42.

greater demand for photogenic performers. The modern-day singer

:51:42.:51:50.

needs to have a wonderful voice, musicianship and artistry and, above

:51:50.:51:53.

all, an ability to communicate with heart and soul. Only then can they

:51:53.:51:59.

be a true singer of the world. Mary King reporting. Mary, you do believe

:51:59.:52:03.

that singers need to be able to offer the complete package, the

:52:03.:52:08.

voice needs to be good, the dramatic skills have to be there too?

:52:08.:52:12.

Absolutely. You have to look appropriate for the parts you are

:52:12.:52:19.

playing, you have to be intent. Good musician, speak several languages,

:52:19.:52:22.

you have to be able to move and have the right voice for the right part.

:52:22.:52:28.

Yeah. Let us see how our next singer fits into that set of requirements.

:52:28.:52:32.

Like England and Italy, South Korea is represented by two contend they

:52:32.:52:40.

ares week. We have heard a south Korean bass now it's the turn of

:52:40.:52:50.
:52:50.:52:53.

bass-baritone Jeongcheol Cha. JC started studying music in his

:52:53.:53:01.

hometown of Seoul. He is now a student in New York. Did you grow up

:53:01.:53:08.

listening to classical music? What did you listen to? Korean pop.

:53:08.:53:13.

's massive now. How did you move from Korean pop to singing classical

:53:13.:53:23.

music? When I saw my first opera at 18 I was in shock. The music was so

:53:23.:53:31.

beautiful. I just fell in love with music, classical music. Well, JC,

:53:31.:53:38.

all the best in this competition. Jeongcheol Cha brings Scotland to

Fair Maid of Perth. Ralp h sings of Rachmaninov opera Alkeo. "Call me

:03:07.:03:17.
:03:17.:03:18.

JC" he tells those he meets. It's difficult to think of Rachmaninov

:03:18.:03:24.

without remembering Shenyang? Absolutely. What was wonderful is

:03:24.:03:28.

how that last phrase led into the moment with the orchestra.

:03:28.:03:34.

Marvellous. I had a tear in my eye, but in a different place. Were

:03:34.:03:38.

telling me earlier you have been follow following south Korean

:03:38.:03:42.

singers and interested in their background and their approach to

:03:42.:03:48.

performing? Yes. It has to be something like all the different

:03:48.:03:52.

nationalities are depending on the native language. It must be

:03:52.:03:58.

something with the Korean language that is bringing the voice. A lot of

:03:58.:04:03.

Handel this week? Isn't it great. Differently by him? This is

:04:03.:04:08.

marvellous. It has been wonderful tonight to hear people singing this

:04:08.:04:13.

great music, incredibly popular, being done in big houses. You don't

:04:13.:04:21.

only need a tiny voice for Hadel you eat it up with your body. We are

:04:21.:04:25.

getting wonderful singers tonightment we can go backstage now

:04:25.:04:31.

to hear from JC. You knew what you had to do tonight, did you do it?

:04:31.:04:36.

don't know, not really. Really?Just a little... I could be better. I

:04:36.:04:43.

think. Actually, every singer is thinking, yeah. All perfectionists,

:04:43.:04:48.

aren't you? Did you feel how warm the audience were towards you?

:04:48.:04:52.

Actually I couldn't feel the audience really because I was so

keeping me company. I have been joined by Dame Palmer. Have you

:22:25.:22:30.

enjoyed your week? Very enjoyable the whole week. It is pretty

:22:30.:22:34.

relentless. Important do you think the Song Prize is as part of Cardiff

:22:35.:22:43.

Singer of the World? It's important. It's like opera in micro cosim. The

:22:43.:22:46.

requirements for opera are on a bigger scale. They are playing with

:22:46.:22:53.

text, the creating of character in miniature is a very useful tool to

:22:53.:22:58.

transfer to the operatic stage, I think. And, it's a discipline that

:22:58.:23:02.

all singers really have to get. It's a dying discipline, I think. It's

:23:03.:23:12.
:23:13.:23:14.

good that we keep it alive in this competition. We will have 2, 000

:23:14.:23:19.

:26:08.:26:13.

would really like to hear again been fantastic having you back here
