The crowning moment of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, as hundreds

:00:07.:00:17.

of thousands gather at Buckingham Palace. A royal wave from the

:00:17.:00:20.

balcony to the crowds below, and tonight a special message of thanks

:00:20.:00:30.
:00:30.:00:30.

to the nation. The events that I have attended to mark my Diamond

:00:30.:00:35.

Jubilee have been a humbling experience. It has touched me

:00:35.:00:39.

deeply to see so many thousands of families, neighbours and friends

:00:39.:00:43.

celebrating together. A day of processions and pageantry but no

:00:43.:00:49.

Prince Philip by the Queen's side - he remains in hospital tonight. A

:00:49.:00:52.

sea of red, white and blue filled the Mall as well wishers made their

:00:52.:01:02.
:01:02.:01:03.

way to Buckingham Palace. She means everything to us. I love the royal

:01:04.:01:08.

family so I wanted to make the effort and get here, and be part of

:01:08.:01:11.

the celebrations. In the day's other news, a man has

:01:11.:01:14.

died and 15 people are critically ill after an outbreak of

:01:14.:01:17.

Legionnaires' disease in Edinburgh. And Russia and China show a united

:01:17.:01:19.

front on Syria - saying no to foreign intervention despite the

:01:19.:01:29.
:01:29.:01:44.

Good evening. The Queen has said she has been deeply touched by the

:01:44.:01:45.

Diamond Jubilee celebrations and has thanked everyone involved for

:01:46.:01:51.

what she called a humbling experience. The comments, in a

:01:51.:01:54.

special video message, came at the end of four days of festivities

:01:54.:01:58.

which drew hundreds of thousands of well wishers to Buckingham Palace.

:01:58.:02:01.

They came to see the Royal Family on the palace balcony, but Prince

:02:01.:02:04.

Philip was absent - he remains in hospital where he's being treated

:02:04.:02:10.

for an infection. Our first report tonight on the final day of the

:02:10.:02:12.

Queen's Diamond Jubilee is from our royal correspondent Nicholas

:02:12.:02:22.
:02:22.:02:25.

Witchell. It is the sight of Britain celebrating its monarchy,

:02:25.:02:29.

and the 60 year reign of this monarch. Hundreds of thousands of

:02:29.:02:36.

people in the Mall waving and cheering, and a Queen temporarily

:02:36.:02:42.

without the husband to whom she is devoted, but carrying on, and in a

:02:42.:02:46.

broadcast tonight saying how much it meant to her. The events that I

:02:46.:02:50.

have attended to mark my Diamond Jubilee have been a humbling

:02:50.:02:55.

experience. It has touched me deeply to see so many thousands of

:02:55.:02:59.

families, neighbours and friends celebrating together in such a

:02:59.:03:04.

happy atmosphere. She said she hoped people would cherish them

:03:04.:03:09.

memories of the Jubilee. I will continue to treasure and draw

:03:09.:03:12.

inspiration from the kindness shown to me in this country and

:03:12.:03:19.

throughout the Commonwealth. Thank you ball. The absence of the Duke

:03:19.:03:23.

of Edinburgh was not going to diminish her day any more than she

:03:23.:03:27.

was going to let down the many who depended on her to be there. So

:03:27.:03:32.

this morning the Queen travelled from Buckingham Palace accompanied

:03:32.:03:38.

by one of her ladies-in-waiting. She was waving cheerfully to people,

:03:38.:03:48.
:03:48.:03:48.

some of whom had camped out overnight on the Mall. At St Paul's

:03:48.:03:53.

Cathedral, where the Queen's great- great-grandmother Victoria had

:03:53.:03:56.

celebrated her Diamond Jubilee more than a century ago, she was

:03:56.:04:04.

escorted to her seat at the head of the congregation. Today she had

:04:04.:04:08.

Prince Charles beside her, and other members of her immediate

:04:08.:04:15.

family around her. The sermon was trenchant, the Archbishop of can

:04:15.:04:19.

break contrasted financial greed and arrogance with someone who had

:04:19.:04:26.

set an example of something better. -- the Archbishop of Canterbury.

:04:26.:04:33.

The Queen has made her public happy, and all the signs are that she is

:04:33.:04:41.

herself happy, fulfilled, and at home in these encounters. The same

:04:41.:04:48.

of course can manifestly be said of Prince Philip, and our prayers and

:04:48.:04:57.

thoughts are very much with him this morning. A special Dymond

:04:57.:05:02.

quiet drawn from churches across the country sign about wisdom and

:05:02.:05:12.
:05:12.:05:12.

thanks were offered to God. -- a Special Choir. We give you thanks

:05:12.:05:16.

that you have blessed this nation, the realms and territories with

:05:16.:05:23.

Elizabeth, our beloved and glorious Queen. After lunch at Westminster

:05:23.:05:29.

Hall, the ceremonial carriage ride, and who was at that took the seat

:05:29.:05:34.

beside the Queen? Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. A site that

:05:34.:05:39.

would have been unimaginable 10 years ago at the Golden Jubilee. As

:05:39.:05:45.

with any family, times change. In the carriage behind, Prince William

:05:45.:05:50.

and the Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry. By the time the

:05:50.:05:54.

carriages with their cavalry escort had reached Buckingham Palace, the

:05:54.:05:59.

rain was starting to come down. But there was one more element of the

:05:59.:06:03.

day for which the crowds started to move into position. Marshalled by

:06:04.:06:09.

the police, they filled the area around the stage in front of the

:06:09.:06:15.

palace where last night's concert was performed. The palace doors

:06:15.:06:19.

opened and the Queen led a group of the family out onto the balcony.

:06:19.:06:23.

The composition of the group is interesting, much smaller than

:06:23.:06:28.

usual. This would appear to be the inner core group now, minus the

:06:28.:06:34.

Duke of Edinburgh. The family has presented itself to the World This

:06:34.:06:39.

weekend, giving us a sharper sense of how it will look in the future.

:06:39.:06:43.

The Queen still at the centre, but with Prince Charles and his wife,

:06:43.:06:50.

Prince William and his wife, and Prince Harry in close support. No

:06:50.:06:55.

balcony appearances complete without a fly past, no fly-past is

:06:55.:06:59.

complete without the emotional impact of these aircraft. A

:06:59.:07:04.

Lancaster, hurricanes and Spitfires, aircraft from an earlier time whose

:07:04.:07:09.

presence speaks of distinguished service. The Queen recognised them,

:07:09.:07:15.

but then she would. Down below the ground recognised something, too,

:07:15.:07:25.
:07:25.:07:29.

and cheered. The Foot Guards also cheered, and the Red Arrows wrought

:07:29.:07:35.

by overhead. But what has made this occasion special has been a sense

:07:35.:07:40.

of real warmth, feelings that have seemed more generous than they were

:07:40.:07:46.

at the last Jubilee 10 years ago. In the 60th year of her reign, the

:07:46.:07:52.

Diamond Jubilee weekend of Queen Elizabeth II has been celebrated.

:07:52.:07:55.

From St Paul's to Westminster to Buckingham Palace, the streets were,

:07:55.:07:58.

once again today, lined with crowds of well wishers who'd come to pay

:07:58.:08:03.

tribute to the Queen and her 60- year reign. Our correspondent Lorna

:08:03.:08:13.
:08:13.:08:17.

Gordon spent the day with the jubilee crowds. 60 years of service,

:08:17.:08:22.

a four Day celebration, and on the Mall cheering from the crowd for

:08:22.:08:28.

the monarch on her Diamond Jubilee. This is what they had waited for, a

:08:28.:08:33.

formal procession with a mounted escort closely followed by the

:08:33.:08:39.

Queen. I have just finished wiping the tears from my eyes, very

:08:40.:08:49.

emotional. She gave us a wave. Today was ceremonial. For those who

:08:49.:08:54.

had been waiting, it was this and the Royal Family that they had come

:08:54.:09:01.

to see. That is what our country is built on. Without the Queen and the

:09:01.:09:07.

royal family, we wouldn't have a lot. They keep us together. Earlier

:09:07.:09:11.

at St Paul's, a proclamation from the public and a service of

:09:11.:09:20.

thanksgiving. She means everything to us. Basically, I love the Queen

:09:20.:09:24.

and I love the royal family so I wanted to make the effort and get

:09:24.:09:30.

here, and be part of the celebrations. Back on the Mall, the

:09:30.:09:35.

crowds came in, flax still waving as their enthusiasm and excitement

:09:35.:09:39.

increased. There are now hundreds of thousands of people making their

:09:40.:09:46.

way down the Mall wanting to take part in this final day of

:09:46.:09:53.

celebrations. I can see the balcony, it is just amazing. Really

:09:53.:10:02.

fantastic. Then, on that balcony, the Queen appeared. Cameras held

:10:02.:10:07.

high to capture the moment. I saw her and cried, I really didn't

:10:07.:10:12.

think I would. One of the best days of our lives. The Royal Family do

:10:12.:10:19.

so much for us. We love the Royal Family. A fitting finale to an

:10:19.:10:29.

historic occasion. These jubilee celebrations made extra-special by

:10:29.:10:36.

the people here who took part. Hundreds of people joined the Queen

:10:36.:10:38.

and other members of the Royal Family for lunch after being

:10:38.:10:43.

invited to a Diamond Jubilee meal at Westminster Hall. Our

:10:43.:10:46.

correspondent Jeremy Cooke has been speaking to two of the special

:10:46.:10:56.
:10:56.:10:56.

guests about their big day. Pomp and ceremony, a right royal

:10:57.:11:02.

occasion, but this time with the difference. The guests, not lords

:11:02.:11:07.

and ladies, but ordinary people invited to represent trades and

:11:07.:11:12.

professions. So, who are they? An English country garden with a

:11:12.:11:17.

difference. This is brings that high-security prison. Inside the

:11:17.:11:23.

razor wire, the landscape has been transformed under the watchful eye

:11:23.:11:27.

of this gardener. He is getting young offenders to get into

:11:27.:11:32.

gardening, teaching about plans but also about the value of patience

:11:32.:11:42.
:11:42.:11:43.

and hard work. What do you think of him having lunch with the Queen?

:11:43.:11:48.

shows how good a teacher he is. days royal lunch recognises his

:11:48.:11:53.

contribution. I think it is just because of the environment I have

:11:53.:11:57.

been working in. In this prison environment it is a challenging

:11:57.:12:02.

environment, an unusual and different environment.

:12:03.:12:07.

describes herself as an ordinary girl from south London, but she has

:12:07.:12:14.

big plans. She is already a boarder at a school in Surrey thanks to a

:12:14.:12:19.

bursary from the very company, but she is aiming high. The plan is

:12:19.:12:23.

Oxford University. I never thought I would be having lunch with the

:12:23.:12:27.

Queen. Even though there are hundreds of other people, I am

:12:27.:12:32.

there and I will remember this for the rest of my life. If getting

:12:32.:12:36.

invited was not enough, some found themselves sharing a table with

:12:36.:12:43.

royalty. It was amazing. I sat on a table with the Duke of Cambridge.

:12:43.:12:49.

It was definitely an amazing day. won't forget it. I will have to go

:12:49.:12:53.

home and tell the story about a million times but it will be a

:12:53.:12:57.

pleasure to do that. It has been an unforgettable day for the Royal

:12:57.:13:02.

Family, and for thousands who have gathered here, but most of all for

:13:02.:13:12.
:13:12.:13:14.

the select few who were chosen to Our royal correspondent Nicholas

:13:14.:13:18.

Witchell has been reporting on the celebrations throughout the past

:13:18.:13:23.

four days. Lots of tributes to the Queen today, but her thoughts will

:13:23.:13:28.

also have been with Prince Philip. Yes, I am sure they will have been.

:13:29.:13:32.

They will all be disappointed he has not been there for the past

:13:32.:13:38.

couple of days. The Queen did not look distracted today, in fact she

:13:38.:13:42.

looked pretty cheerful. Prince Edward went to see his father this

:13:42.:13:46.

afternoon and said he was much better and in need of a good rest.

:13:46.:13:52.

He said his mother was bearing up, although missing him. I guess in a

:13:52.:13:56.

couple of days Prince Philip will be out and keen to join the Queen

:13:56.:14:01.

for the remaining celebrations in different parts of the country.

:14:01.:14:05.

What have the celebrations told us about the monarchy itself? I would

:14:05.:14:10.

say it is telling us the monarchy is in a very good order. We know

:14:10.:14:15.

that not everybody is a monarchist, but the overwhelming majority would

:14:15.:14:19.

appear to be. There has been real warmth throughout this Diamond

:14:19.:14:24.

Jubilee. It is deeper and pick her up and it was 10 years ago because

:14:24.:14:30.

the family is more together now. It feels more at ease with itself. The

:14:30.:14:36.

public response is in accordance with that. I think also as we saw

:14:36.:14:39.

today the focus increasingly will be on this core group of six to

:14:39.:14:44.

eight members of the royal family. That has implications for Prince

:14:44.:14:51.

William when he decides to remain in the RAF. The public admiration

:14:51.:14:58.

for the Queen's longevity and not just from this country, there was a

:14:58.:15:03.

message from President Obama and the United States. I think it tells

:15:03.:15:06.

us the monarchy is in a stronger position now than it has been

:15:06.:15:12.

perhaps for maybe a generation or more. In other news, a man has died

:15:12.:15:16.

and 15 other people are critically ill in hospital following an

:15:16.:15:21.

outbreak of Legionnaire's disease in Edinburgh. Health officials are

:15:21.:15:25.

urgently trying to establish the source of the infections. James

:15:25.:15:30.

Cook is in Edinburgh. What more can you tell us. Edinburgh Royal

:15:30.:15:34.

Infirmary is on alert tonight as a hospital deals with those confirmed

:15:34.:15:41.

cases and with 15 suspected cases of Legionnaire's disease.

:15:41.:15:43.

Environmental health officers are racing to find the source of the

:15:44.:15:48.

outbreak. Edinburgh is tonight at the centre of what doctors are

:15:48.:15:53.

calling a significant and serious outbreak of disease. For a

:15:53.:15:57.

fortnight it appears the deadly legionnaires bacteria was spewing

:15:57.:16:02.

into the air. The potential area of infection extends to nearly 45

:16:02.:16:07.

square miles. The most likely source is an industrial chimney in

:16:07.:16:11.

the west of the city. 16 have been cleaned and samples sent for

:16:11.:16:14.

analysis, but it could be a week before experts know whether they

:16:14.:16:19.

have got it right. We are not ruling out other sources of

:16:19.:16:26.

infection. We are trying to identify where pieces may travel to

:16:26.:16:29.

and shared leisure facilities and social activities which may point

:16:29.:16:35.

to another source of infection. disease stems from bacteria that

:16:35.:16:40.

causes serious lung infections including pneumonia. It can breed

:16:40.:16:44.

in air-conditioning systems and cooling towers and is contracted by

:16:44.:16:49.

inhaling water droplets containing the bacteria. Locals are concerned.

:16:49.:16:54.

It is quite frightening and what is being done about it? There is

:16:54.:16:59.

definitely a risk and we should be made more aware of it. Many of the

:17:00.:17:05.

patients are in intensive care at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Most of

:17:05.:17:09.

the Confirmed cases are critically ill and almost all live and work in

:17:09.:17:12.

the West of the city. More cases are expected.

:17:13.:17:18.

I have been told the names of some of the place is under investigation.

:17:18.:17:23.

The North British distillery and Burton's foods and a pharmaceutical

:17:23.:17:30.

company. They said they were co- operating with this investigation.

:17:30.:17:34.

A British soldier who was killed in Afghanistan on a mission to rescue

:17:34.:17:39.

an Afghan policeman from insurgents has been named. Private Gregg

:17:39.:17:43.

Thomas Stone from 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment was shot dead on

:17:43.:17:48.

Sunday night. He was 20 and had been in Afghanistan for less than a

:17:48.:17:51.

month. His wife is expecting their first child.

:17:51.:17:56.

A man described by the White House as Al-Qaeda's second in command has

:17:56.:18:01.

been killed in a US missile strike in Pakistan. Abu Yahya al-Libi was

:18:01.:18:05.

targeted in the tribal region of North Waziristan on the border

:18:05.:18:10.

region with Pakistan. Orla Guerin is in Islamabad for us. How

:18:10.:18:15.

significant is this to Al-Qaeda? There is no doubt it is a big blow,

:18:15.:18:20.

the worst blows since the killing of Osama Bin Laden last year. The

:18:20.:18:25.

White House believes it has killed a major enemy of the United States.

:18:26.:18:29.

After Osama Bin Laden was killed, Abu Yahya al-Libi is believed to

:18:29.:18:36.

have moved into the number two slot. The White House is calling him Al-

:18:36.:18:39.

Qaeda's general manager. But in addition to running the day-to-day

:18:39.:18:44.

affairs, he was a planner, a propagandist, a strategic thinker.

:18:44.:18:49.

He is believed to have played a key role in planning attacks against

:18:49.:18:54.

the West and to have been central to Al-Qaeda's attempts to reinvent

:18:54.:18:58.

itself. In the past the organisation has lost a dozen

:18:58.:19:02.

leaders and replace them, but US officials are stressing Abu Yahya

:19:02.:19:07.

al-Libi was particularly versatile and experienced. They say there is

:19:07.:19:11.

no obvious successor to take his place and they believe Al-Qaeda

:19:11.:19:17.

will be Sprackling -- scrambling to fill his vacuum. Syria has declared

:19:17.:19:21.

the ambassadors of several Western countries including Britain as an

:19:21.:19:26.

welcome in the country. It follows the expulsion of Syrian diplomats

:19:26.:19:31.

by governments around the world. China and Russia reiterated their

:19:31.:19:32.

opposition to foreign intervention in Syria.

:19:33.:19:38.

It was Vladimir Putin's first visit to China since swapping back to

:19:38.:19:47.

President of Russia. The mood was reminiscent of cold-war meetings a

:19:47.:19:51.

generation ago as Russia and China once again stand together against

:19:51.:19:56.

the West. Britain, America and France may want a halt to the

:19:56.:20:01.

bloodshed in Syria, but in Beijing it is seen as Western intrusion

:20:01.:20:07.

into the affairs of an ally. TRANSLATION: Both China and Russia

:20:07.:20:12.

are consistently opposed to external intervention in the Syrian

:20:12.:20:14.

situation and oppose regime changed by force.

:20:15.:20:20.

But regime change in Syria is very clearly now on the American agenda.

:20:20.:20:25.

So after what we have seen in the last 10 days, particularly the

:20:25.:20:30.

massacre in Houla, the peace and human dignity will not be possible

:20:30.:20:37.

in Syria without political change. Why are Russia and China still

:20:37.:20:41.

backing President al-Assad? Both believe they have something to lose

:20:41.:20:46.

if he goes. He is their only regional ally, buying 300 million

:20:46.:20:52.

worth of arms a year. China fears intervention in Syria could set a

:20:52.:20:56.

precedent elsewhere. Both countries feel betrayed after being persuaded

:20:56.:21:00.

to vote for resolutions on Libya last year that they did not think

:21:00.:21:06.

would lead to Western intervention. Syria today expelled Britain's

:21:06.:21:10.

ambassador to Damascus, a largely symbolic gestures since he left in

:21:10.:21:15.

March. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue to try and salvage

:21:15.:21:19.

the Kofi Annan peace plan. It is looking hopeless as Russia hardens

:21:19.:21:25.

his position against further action against the regime. Syrian rebels

:21:25.:21:31.

have formally given up a ceasefire anyway. It never really existed.

:21:31.:21:38.

And the stage is set now for a protracted civil war.

:21:38.:21:42.

A Canadian man accused of killing a student and posting a video of the

:21:42.:21:45.

dead online has appeared in court in Germany. Luka Rocco Magnotta,

:21:46.:21:50.

who has been the focus of an international manhunt since fleeing

:21:50.:21:57.

Canada, was arrested by police at an internet cafe in Berlin.

:21:57.:22:01.

The last moments before Luka Rocco Magnotta is arrested. He was caught

:22:01.:22:05.

on camera in an internet cafe in Berlin and recognised by an

:22:06.:22:11.

employee who had seen his picture in the papers. In this flat in

:22:11.:22:15.

Montreal he is alleged to have felt himself killing and dismembering

:22:15.:22:22.

his lover and he put the horrific video on the Internet. A song from

:22:22.:22:27.

the film American Psycho played in the background. Parts of the body

:22:27.:22:32.

were then sent to Canadian politicians. What do the police

:22:32.:22:37.

know about him? 29 year-old Luka Rocco Magnotta was an actor in porn

:22:37.:22:44.

movies. He lived in Montreal with a student, the alleged murder victim.

:22:44.:22:49.

On 26th May, he flew from Montreal to Paris where he is believed to

:22:49.:22:53.

have stayed in this hotel. He travelled by coach to Berlin where

:22:53.:22:58.

he was arrested in the internet cafe yesterday. Someone from the

:22:58.:23:03.

cafe flagged down a police car. It contained police cadets who made

:23:03.:23:08.

the arrest without a struggle. There was no resistance against the

:23:08.:23:13.
