55 people have been arrested after a night of rioting in North London.

:00:12.:00:17.

Petrol bombs were thrown. Vehicles and buildings set on fire and shops

:00:17.:00:22.

were looted. As local people survey the damage, community and political

:00:22.:00:27.

leaders have condemned the destruction. A community that was

:00:27.:00:31.

already hurting has now had the heart ripped out of it. Emergency

:00:31.:00:37.

talks are held tonight about the debt crisis in the eurozone, amid

:00:37.:00:43.

anxiety about how the morning's markets will react. And - the come-

:00:43.:00:53.
:00:53.:01:06.

back kings as Manchester United Hello. Police, politicians and

:01:06.:01:09.

local people have united in condemning the overnight violence

:01:09.:01:14.

in Tottenham in North London, which injured 29 people, most of them

:01:14.:01:18.

police officers. Rioters set billings on fire, looted shops and

:01:18.:01:23.

attacked the police. 55 people were arrested. The violence broke out

:01:23.:01:26.

following an earlier peaceful protest about the fatal shooting of

:01:26.:01:31.

a local man by police a few days ago. Tonight the Metropolitan force

:01:31.:01:38.

said it has put extra police on the streets of Tottenham.

:01:38.:01:45.

This was Tottenham High Road late last night. At one end, officers in

:01:45.:01:55.
:01:55.:01:56.

riot gear. At the other, the young men they are trying to police.

:01:56.:01:59.

This was the main shopping street - the commercial heart of the

:01:59.:02:06.

community, turned into a battle zone.

:02:06.:02:11.

Bricks, firecrackers and flames filled the Knight Air.

:02:11.:02:19.

-- the night air. Homes and shops were destroyed. More than two dozen

:02:19.:02:24.

police officers were hurt. From a vantage point high in a

:02:24.:02:34.
:02:34.:02:37.

building, running battles could be seen on the street below.

:02:37.:02:40.

This followed a peaceful protest at the death of a man in a police

:02:40.:02:45.

shooting last week. There's no question, the police were targets

:02:45.:02:53.

last night. Here, an empty squad car was attacked before being set

:02:53.:03:00.

ablaze. But there was vandalism and looting too. Targets, seemingly

:03:00.:03:04.

chosen at random. Even several hours after the violence began, at

:03:04.:03:10.

first light the looting went on, apparently unhindered. Here people

:03:10.:03:14.

made off with clothing. Today, police rejected claims they had

:03:14.:03:19.

been slow to catch up we vents and had not been prepared enough for

:03:19.:03:22.

the earlier protest. We kept a dignified response to that, to

:03:22.:03:28.

allow that protest to take place. However, once that extreme violence,

:03:28.:03:33.

and it was violence that could not be anticipated on that scale,

:03:33.:03:37.

occurred, we moved the appropriate level of resource s in.

:03:37.:03:40.

residents picked through the wreckage of their neighbourhood,

:03:40.:03:43.

the Government today praised the police and said the rioters would

:03:43.:03:50.

feel the full force of the law. The looting and vandalism drew anger

:03:50.:03:58.

from the local MP. The vast majority of people in

:03:58.:04:02.

Tottenham reject what has happened here last night. A community that

:04:02.:04:06.

was already hurting has now had the heart ripped out of it. And some

:04:06.:04:10.

members of the community have been left homeless too. When you look at

:04:10.:04:14.

the building now, there's no floors in there. It's like three levels

:04:14.:04:20.

and there's no floors. All my stuff has gone. Electrical goods can be

:04:20.:04:26.

replaced. I have my kid's stuff in there, photos of my girls and my

:04:26.:04:31.

boys. I don't know what to say. Last night, Tottenham paid a heavy

:04:31.:04:37.

price. It is one of London's poorest areas and can ill afford

:04:37.:04:43.

the damage this has done. This evening, the family of the man

:04:43.:04:47.

shot by police on Thursday, Mark Duggan, said they did not condone

:04:47.:04:51.

the rioting. The circumstances surrounding his death are being

:04:51.:04:54.

investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Our

:04:54.:04:58.

home affairs correspondent looks at how that shooting led to last

:04:58.:05:04.

night's riots. The scene at the fatal shooting which led to a

:05:04.:05:09.

protest march, which led to a riot. On Thursday, a man travelling in a

:05:09.:05:16.

minicab was shot in an arrest operation. An unpolice firearm was

:05:16.:05:18.

recovered from the scene. For police to open fire they must

:05:19.:05:24.

believe there is an imminent threat. The man they shot is Mark Duggan.

:05:24.:05:31.

His death is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints

:05:31.:05:37.

Commission. Speculation that Mark Duggan was executed in an execution

:05:37.:05:42.

style, involving shots to the head are uncategorically untrue. The

:05:42.:05:47.

IPCC is not only investigating the actions of the officer firing the

:05:47.:05:50.

shots, but the planning, decision- making and implementation of the

:05:50.:05:56.

police operation. It was from the Broadwater Farm

:05:56.:06:00.

estate in Tottenham that yesterday's protest march set off.

:06:00.:06:05.

Many here knew Mark Duggan. They killed him, you know. Because they

:06:05.:06:10.

are a law unto themselves they could say all this in the paper,

:06:10.:06:14.

saying he was this, he was that. I don't see my friend being in a car

:06:14.:06:19.

and being surrounded by armed police and he's going to jump out

:06:19.:06:24.

and open fire on armed police. How does that make sense? 26 years ago,

:06:24.:06:27.

Broadwater Farm became the most infamous estate in the country.

:06:27.:06:33.

Then, as now, it was a death which led to disturbances. This woman

:06:33.:06:38.

died as police who had arrested her son searched her home N the riots

:06:38.:06:44.

that followed a Metropolitan police officer, Constable Keith Blakelock,

:06:44.:06:48.

was murdered. People who have lived here a long time are upset that now

:06:48.:06:52.

it is back in the news again for negative reasons. Most won't go on

:06:53.:06:57.

camera. Events of the past few days have sparked a debate about the

:06:57.:06:59.

wider issues here. Like relationships between locals and

:06:59.:07:07.

The police have not communicated directly with the youth here. It

:07:07.:07:11.

has caused the problem today. They feel they have no word, no voice.

:07:11.:07:18.

The voice they think that is good is smashing up things. So they see

:07:19.:07:24.

their voice get heard. There is anger at outsiders who are said to

:07:24.:07:27.

have come in for mob violence. There are people I have never seen

:07:28.:07:34.

in my life. I believe there were anarchists in there as well.

:07:34.:07:39.

family of the dead man say they do not condone what happened last

:07:39.:07:45.

night in his name. They have appealed for an end to the violence.

:07:45.:07:51.

Our correspondent is in Tottenham. What is the scene there tonight?

:07:51.:07:55.

Well, a very subdued atmosphere here in Tottenham tonight.

:07:55.:07:59.

Residents still coming to terms with the rioting which caused such

:07:59.:08:03.

devastation to the high street. That high street is still sealed

:08:03.:08:09.

off. Half a mile of it is a crime scene. You can see the burnt-out

:08:09.:08:14.

police cars which were attacked last night in the background there.

:08:14.:08:18.

There has been disturbances in Enfield, with altercations between

:08:19.:08:23.

protestors and riot police. A number of arrests made, although

:08:23.:08:28.

nothing on the scale of last night. Now, we don't know that's anything

:08:29.:08:35.

to do with the Mark Duggan incident or copycat violence. Meanwhile,

:08:35.:08:39.

investigations continuing here. The question for community leaders and

:08:39.:08:46.

politicians is, was this a case of a peaceful protest being hijacked

:08:46.:08:49.

by fundamental elements? It is something which will take weeks,

:08:49.:08:53.

days, months of calm reflection to answer.

:08:53.:08:57.

Now, the rest of the day's news. And in the last few hours,

:08:57.:09:01.

emergency talks have been held in advance of the opening of the

:09:01.:09:04.

financial markets T discussions follow the downgrading of America's

:09:04.:09:08.

credit rating on Friday and the continuing instability in the

:09:08.:09:12.

eurozone. We can get the latest from our business correspondent.

:09:12.:09:17.

Not long since that ECB meeting. One of the key meeting, I think,

:09:17.:09:21.

broke up? A lot happening. Let's start with the meeting. There was a

:09:21.:09:27.

conference call to discuss Italy and Spain. The cost of borrowing

:09:27.:09:30.

for Italy and Spain rose to dangerous levels. They are very

:09:30.:09:34.

concerned that due to the size of Italy and Spain they need to get it

:09:34.:09:40.

down. That is why they want to buy up Italian and Spanish bonds. That

:09:40.:09:43.

was resisted by Germany. What we are learning in the past half an

:09:43.:09:48.

hour is indeed the ECB will intervene in the markets and buy up

:09:48.:09:52.

Spanish and Italian bonds. That is according to sources. It does

:09:52.:09:57.

appear to be a change for ECB stance. The other big thing is

:09:57.:10:03.

there will be a conference called G7 Finance Ministers, that includes

:10:03.:10:08.

George Osborne. He is eight hours behind us. The Japanese Finance

:10:08.:10:13.

Minister is a few hours ahead of it thaism are meeting to discuss not -

:10:13.:10:22.

- they are meeting to discuss the downgrading of triple-A.

:10:22.:10:28.

The first markets are open, any suggestions? Last week 1.5

:10:28.:10:31.

trillion was wiped off shares. A lot of people have beated breath to

:10:31.:10:36.

see what will happen. We don't know whether the markets will shrug off

:10:36.:10:40.

this downgrade. The very early indications from New Zealand

:10:40.:10:45.

trading is that the US dollar has hit an all-time low against the

:10:45.:10:52.

Swiss franc. Speculation of the FTSE opening

:10:52.:10:56.

down 2-3%. Opposition activists in Syria say more than 75 people have

:10:56.:11:00.

been killed in two towns as tanks and trooped moved against

:11:00.:11:04.

protestors. In Deir al-Zour n the north-east of the country, it is

:11:04.:11:07.

reported 50 people died when soldiers stormed the city after

:11:07.:11:13.

dawn. Amateur video, which cannot be verified, shows plumes of smoke

:11:13.:11:17.

and the sound of explosions. The Government denies shelling the city.

:11:17.:11:20.

The NATO-led forces in Afghanistan say four of their soldiers have

:11:20.:11:24.

been killed in two separate attacks. Two French soldiers died and five

:11:24.:11:28.

were wounded when they came under fire from insurgents north of Kabul.

:11:28.:11:32.

The two others were killed in the south of the country. Their

:11:32.:11:37.

nationalities have not been disclosed. An investigation is

:11:37.:11:41.

underway in Afghanistan, into the crash yesterday of a US Chinook

:11:41.:11:44.

helicopter, which the Taliban claims to have shot down. 38 people

:11:44.:11:50.

were killed. More than half of them were members of an elite Special

:11:50.:11:55.

Forces unit, the Navy SEALs. It is reported they were called in to

:11:55.:12:00.

help other troops who were under fire. It is likely to increase the

:12:00.:12:04.

pressure on President Obama on his Afghanistan policy.

:12:04.:12:09.

The first pictures of some of the 22 elite Navy SEALs killed in

:12:10.:12:14.

Saturday's helicopter crash. They volunteered to fight, but in their

:12:14.:12:18.

home communities there's a mood of shock and disbelief. It's the

:12:18.:12:22.

biggest single loss of life in the history of US Special Forces.

:12:22.:12:28.

loss of any one of those is tragic, but for such a large group together,

:12:28.:12:35.

that's a tough one to take. It's horrible. It is. It is... You cry.

:12:35.:12:39.

I don't know what else to do. It is sad. It is thought their helicopter,

:12:39.:12:44.

like this one, was brought down by a Taliban rocket during a raid on

:12:44.:12:48.

insurgents in these mountains. This is an area where Afghan forces were

:12:48.:12:54.

supposed to have taken over. The Americans are already beginning to

:12:54.:12:57.

head home. With 10,000 troops ordered to leave by President Obama

:12:57.:13:02.

before the end of this year. We are going to have to address the

:13:02.:13:07.

problem that is created. Out there is the perception Afghanistan and

:13:07.:13:11.

other parts of that part of the world, that America is withdrawing.

:13:11.:13:16.

That can't be good. That is a minority view. Most Americans want

:13:16.:13:21.

their troops out now. Returning to the White House, with his family,

:13:21.:13:26.

Barack Obama was trying his best to look relaxed. The week ahead could

:13:26.:13:31.

be one of his most challenging yet. Bracing himself for the fallout

:13:31.:13:35.

after the downgrade the last thing he needs is more bad news from

:13:35.:13:41.

Afghanistan. The fact it is members of the US Navy sales, the same unit

:13:41.:13:44.

which killed Osama Bin Laden has taken some of the shine off what

:13:44.:13:50.

Americans see one of the few successes of his presidency.

:13:50.:13:59.

Now, we can catch up with all the day's sport news. The Community

:13:59.:14:04.

Shield may be regarded as a meaningless match, but Manchester

:14:04.:14:08.

United came from two down to beat Manchester City at Wembley. Their

:14:08.:14:15.

winner came in injury time. The volume turned up for the

:14:15.:14:21.

noiseiest of neighbours. Wembley rocking. Like most concerts,

:14:21.:14:25.

finding personal space was tough, until Jolean Lescott located a spot,

:14:25.:14:30.

with devastating effect. It was a goal few had seen coming. The same

:14:30.:14:37.

could be said for their second. This arguably, the best moment of

:14:37.:14:43.

Edin Dzeko's with City. His team were not stunned though.

:14:43.:14:48.

Another new recruit, Ashley Young set up Chris Smalling for the

:14:48.:14:57.

comeback. Beaten by Barcelona pulled off a Catalan... They were

:14:58.:15:02.

set to hold on for penalties until the ultimate moment of confusion

:15:02.:15:08.

with a minute left. Nani knew what he was doing.

:15:08.:15:14.

So much for just being preseason, and proof again that Manchester --

:15:14.:15:18.

pre-season and proof again that Manchester don't know when they are

:15:18.:15:23.

beaten. City looking over the fence. West Ham have started life in the

:15:23.:15:27.

championship with defeat at home to Cardiff City after their relegation

:15:27.:15:31.

the Hammers are favourites to go back up. They dominated the match

:15:31.:15:35.

but could not score. Cardiff stole it in injury time. Kenny Miller

:15:35.:15:40.

with their injury-time winner. Two games in the Scottish Premier

:15:40.:15:45.

League today. Motherwell are top of the table after beating Hearts 1-0.

:15:45.:15:55.

That was the score at Pittodrie. Anthony Stokes scored the only goal

:15:55.:16:01.

mid-way through the second half to make it two out of two for Celtic.

:16:01.:16:07.

Rugby league's challenge cup final will be between Wigan Warriors and

:16:07.:16:11.

Leeds Rhinos. Castleford were minutes away from Wembley. The

:16:11.:16:15.

Rhinos beat them in extra time. Castleford tigers thought this was

:16:15.:16:18.

the try that could get them to Wembley for the first time in 19

:16:18.:16:28.
:16:28.:16:33.

Leeds were left playing catch, and failing.

:16:33.:16:38.

Tigers were 8-2 up into the final ten minutes. The defence that held

:16:38.:16:45.

so firm let them down. Watkin's try not good enough by itself. They

:16:45.:16:55.
:16:55.:16:56.

needed this kick to level the He's missed it. In extra time, the

:16:56.:17:03.

first points win the match. A high tackle gave Sinfield at kick at

:17:04.:17:09.

goal. Rhinos, winners up last year, are

:17:09.:17:14.

on their way back to Wembley. It's been a great weekend for British

:17:14.:17:16.

triathlete after Helen Jenkins's victory yesterday. Alistair

:17:16.:17:23.

Brownlee won today. It is his third win after five events of the World

:17:23.:17:28.

Triathlon Series. This will be on the same course used for next

:17:28.:17:32.

year's Olympics. After the swim and bike ride Brownlee took complete

:17:32.:17:37.

control in the 10km run and was able to enjoy the home support. His

:17:37.:17:42.

brother was third. The atmosphere was incredible.

:17:42.:17:46.

There is a part of the course way out in London. People were around

:17:47.:17:49.

there. The last bit here was incredible. There were thousands of

:17:49.:17:53.
