They ripped down the Israeli flag and threw it down to the cheering

crowds below. An Israeli official said six members of staff in the

building at the time were released by Egyptian commandos.

He said this was a serious blow to the fabric of peace between Egypt

and Israel. The Israeli ambassador has left

Egypt. This morning the streets are tense but calm.

Under the former Egyptian leader, Hosni Mubarak, who was forced from

office this year, ties with Israel were cold but stable.

But now the 30-year-old peace treaty is being severely tested.

Forces loyal to the new Libyan leadership are engaged in fresh

fighting to oust Colonel Gaddafi's supporters from one of their last

strongholds, the town of Bani Walid. The former rebels have advanced

under heavy fire to within a mile of the town centre. Let's go live

to our correspondent, who is just outside Bani Walid. We've been

allowed to move quite a bit closer to Bani Walid. There's been a lot

of firing around news the air. The rebels lets off rounds in

celebration. But inside the town itself there is heavy fighting

going on. It seems Colonel Gaddafi's forces are putting up

much fiercer resistance than these men hoped or expected. They are

taking mortar and rocket fire constantly. Not many casualties

reported but this is going to be a tough battle between die-hard

Gaddafi loyalists who are holding on in Bani Walid. The hope is the

town will be captured within hours, the men say, but right now that

doesn't look like that is going happen.

There's continued high security in New York and Washington over a

possible bomb threat ahead of the tenth anniversary of the September

11th attacks. In the last hour President Obama has delivered his

weekly address to the nation. Mr Obama talked about the bravery

displayed that day. Ten years ago ordinary Americans showed us the

true meaning of courage when they rushed up the stairwells into those

flames into that cockpit The decade since a new generation has stepped

forward to keep us safe Their memory, in their name, we will

never waiver. We will protect the country we love and pass it safer,

stronger and more prosperous to the next generation.
