Fresh clashes erupt in the Egyptian capital of Cairo as security forces

:00:09.:00:15.

tried to get protesters off the streets. At least two people have

:00:15.:00:21.

been killed as anger rises about the slow pace of reform. We did not

:00:21.:00:26.

expect that we would return to the same place we were in January. We

:00:26.:00:30.

are fighting against the same regime. Nothing changed.

:00:30.:00:35.

A more protests in Syria, but President Assad flowers to continue

:00:35.:00:42.

the crackdown on opponents of his regime. -- swears to continue.

:00:42.:00:48.

The Government warns that there concessions could be withdrawn if

:00:48.:00:58.
:00:58.:01:09.

the public sector strike continues. Good evening. Violent clashes have

:01:09.:01:14.

been continuing in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, as the police and

:01:14.:01:18.

army try to evict thousands of people from Tahrir Square. At least

:01:18.:01:22.

two people were killed today as demonstrators protested at what

:01:22.:01:28.

they see as the slow pace of change since the overthrow of President

:01:28.:01:32.

Mubarak in February. Our correspondent has spent the day in

:01:32.:01:36.

and around Tahrir Square and sense in this report.

:01:36.:01:40.

They are already calling it the second revolution. These Egyptians

:01:40.:01:44.

have lost patience with the military rulers that took over from

:01:44.:01:53.

Hosni Mubarak. So it is back to a battle for the streets. Fora day

:01:53.:01:57.

and a half, the police have been firing volley after volley of tear

:01:57.:02:02.

gas, sending the protesters scurrying for cover. But time and

:02:02.:02:06.

again the demonstrators regained their ground. This is the front

:02:07.:02:10.

line. The police are over there protecting the Interior Ministry

:02:10.:02:14.

and the protesters are battling it out. The air is thick with tear gas.

:02:14.:02:20.

We thought we had seen an end of this. But this crowd is as angry as

:02:20.:02:24.

I have seen them here in Egypt. From the front line, a fleet of

:02:24.:02:27.

motorcycles rushed the injured straight into a makeshift field

:02:27.:02:32.

hospital. Amidst the chaos, they are treating suffocation from tear

:02:32.:02:39.

gas and gunshot wounds. The same doctors in the same space as they

:02:39.:02:44.

used when they were fighting Hosni Mubarak's fighters. We were so

:02:44.:02:48.

proud of our revolution. We did not expect we would return to the same

:02:48.:02:55.

place we were in January. We are fighting against the same regime.

:02:55.:02:59.

Nothing changed. All the time, the crowds were flooding back into

:02:59.:03:03.

Tahrir Square. They are re- establishing the old regime and we

:03:03.:03:08.

don't want the old regime. We don't want Hosni Mubarak. We did the

:03:08.:03:14.

revolution and we are continuing it. Then late in the day, the army came

:03:14.:03:18.

to reinforce the police. They moved back into Tahrir Square, taking

:03:18.:03:25.

control, sometimes brutally. In one corner, protesters and knelt to

:03:25.:03:30.

pray, gesture of defiance that the soldiers respected. By nightfall,

:03:30.:03:36.

the square was almost empty. This is a dangerous moment for the army.

:03:36.:03:40.

In direct conflict, the revolution they vowed to protect. Many

:03:40.:03:44.

Egyptians still support them, but certainly not the thousands still

:03:44.:03:50.

fighting tonight for control of the centre of Cairo. How is it looking

:03:51.:03:57.

now in Tahrir Square? The situation now is that the protesters have

:03:57.:04:01.

taken control yet again of Tahrir Square, despite the best efforts of

:04:01.:04:07.

the police and the army to move them out of here. This poses some

:04:07.:04:11.

big problems for the military rulers. Firstly, can the elections

:04:11.:04:16.

go ahead on November 28th as planned? Parliamentary elections.

:04:16.:04:20.

Both opposition rulers and the Muslim brother for a say they want

:04:20.:04:29.

that to happen but can they allow that to happen? -- Muslim

:04:29.:04:37.

Brotherhood. Most people support the army, but they have alienated

:04:37.:04:40.

many members of society here, including the Muslim Brotherhood

:04:41.:04:47.

and many liberal members. You have to wonder where this will end.

:04:47.:04:51.

Thank you. In Syria, President al-Assad has

:04:51.:04:56.

said that he will not bowed to international pressure to end the

:04:56.:04:59.

crackdown against anti-government protesters there. The Arab League

:04:59.:05:04.

has been trying to end the violence. They have refused to accept Syrian

:05:04.:05:07.

changes to proposals to send in monitors.

:05:07.:05:15.

Damascus yesterday. I unverified video, apparently showing anti-

:05:15.:05:18.

Government protesters being shot by security forces. But military

:05:18.:05:22.

action is justified, according to the Syrian President, because he

:05:22.:05:28.

says they are fighting an armed rebellion. We are not talking about

:05:28.:05:31.

peaceful demonstrations. They are militants. Whenever you have

:05:31.:05:36.

militants, you have killing. The role of the Government is to fight

:05:36.:05:40.

militants in order to restore the stability and to protect this to

:05:40.:05:48.

billions. -- the civilians. There is an insurgency under way in Syria,

:05:48.:05:53.

as demonstrated in this amateur video. It claims to show a military

:05:53.:05:58.

vehicle being destroyed by rebel fighters in the city of Homs last

:05:58.:06:06.

week. Soldiers running for their lives. Again, we cannot

:06:06.:06:10.

independently verified this. Very few foreign journalists are allowed

:06:10.:06:16.

into the country. With the situation deteriorating, Arab

:06:16.:06:19.

leaders are still trying to persuade the Syrian Government to

:06:19.:06:24.

pull its military forces out of the main towns and cities, and to allow

:06:24.:06:27.

in foreign observers. But their latest deadline has again been

:06:27.:06:36.

ignored by Damascus. TRANSLATION: The situation requires slow and

:06:36.:06:46.
:06:46.:06:48.

steady discussion. Not over- reaction and Tahseen us. -- and

:06:48.:06:52.

being hasty. As anti-government protesters take to the streets,

:06:52.:06:56.

every day there is more violence. These demonstrators in Homs are

:06:56.:07:01.

coming under a withering barrage of fire on Friday. Already, according

:07:01.:07:09.

to the United Nations, at least 3500 people have been killed.

:07:10.:07:14.

The transitional Government in Libya says that Colonel Gaddafi's

:07:14.:07:19.

son Saif Al-Islam has been taken to a secure place to begin the process

:07:19.:07:24.

of interrogation. He was captured on Friday and is thought to be held

:07:24.:07:32.

in Zintan. Our correspondent is there. What can you tell us? This

:07:32.:07:37.

is a town in the western mountains. Militia men here captured Saif Al-

:07:37.:07:42.

Islam. Nobody is saying where he is being held but we are told that he

:07:42.:07:46.

is here in a private home, being carefully guarded. I have also been

:07:46.:07:50.

told that Saif Al-Islam has asked for shaving foam so that he can

:07:50.:07:55.

shave off the beard that he group while he was on the run for so long.

:07:55.:08:01.

And he has asked for a mobile phone, which has not been granted. The

:08:01.:08:04.

request for shaving foam has been. The commander of the brigade that

:08:04.:08:11.

captured her and said that when Saif Al-Islam was taken, he acted

:08:11.:08:17.

in a manner that implied he was in control. But he did show some fear.

:08:17.:08:20.

He apparently asked the commander to shoot him dead. The commander

:08:20.:08:26.

said that he refused. They are well aware here of how they will be

:08:26.:08:33.

judged in their treatment of Saif Al-Islam Al Gaddafi and we are

:08:33.:08:35.

hearing that prosecutors should start interrogating and questioning

:08:35.:08:41.

him tonight. Thank you. The Cabinet Office

:08:41.:08:44.

minister has suggested that the Government could withdraw its

:08:44.:08:46.

latest engine offer if millions of public sector workers go on strike

:08:46.:08:56.
:08:56.:08:57.

as planned on November 30th. -- latest pension offer. Unions say

:08:57.:08:59.

that big Government is not negotiating properly and until that

:08:59.:09:06.

changes, the strikes will go ahead. The country's biggest unions, with

:09:06.:09:11.

millions of members, have voted to strike, and civil servants,

:09:11.:09:15.

teachers and NHS workers are set to join the walk out at the end of the

:09:15.:09:23.

month, in protest against plans to changes to public sector pensions.

:09:23.:09:27.

The Cabinet Office minister was asked if offers would be withdrawn

:09:27.:09:32.

if the strike goes ahead. Absolutely. We have made that clear.

:09:32.:09:36.

This offer is not unconditional and we will have the ability to

:09:36.:09:40.

withdraw it. We will protect lower- paid people and be fairer.

:09:40.:09:48.

private the Government has accepted that this strike will go ahead. It

:09:48.:09:53.

is further industrial action that could derail a deal. Government

:09:53.:09:58.

sources stressed that a walk out on November 30th will not mean that

:09:58.:10:01.

the latest engine offer will be taken off the table. Discussions

:10:01.:10:05.

will continue but not indefinitely. Ministers want an agreement reached

:10:05.:10:10.

by the end of the year. So what is the offer? A particular sticking

:10:10.:10:13.

point is that public sector employees would have to pay more

:10:13.:10:17.

for their pensions. The Government would also contribute more as well.

:10:17.:10:21.

Those under 50 would have to work longer before they received their

:10:21.:10:25.

pension. Those within 10 years of retirement would receive the same

:10:25.:10:29.

pension that they are currently two to get. It is this final part of

:10:29.:10:35.

the deal that the Government may revise in the first -- in the event

:10:35.:10:44.

of more strikes. I don't think it is helpful to ratchet up the

:10:44.:10:47.

rhetoric and threaten to withdraw things. We need to sit down and

:10:47.:10:51.

resolve the issues. The two side have been sitting down for a year

:10:51.:10:55.

without a breakthrough. In 10 days' time we are likely to see the

:10:55.:11:04.

biggest strike for regeneration. -- a generation.

:11:04.:11:07.

A group of Church of England bishops has called on the

:11:07.:11:10.

Government to take another look at plans to cap welfare benefits at

:11:10.:11:13.

500 a week. In a letter to the Observer 18 Bishops, including the

:11:13.:11:16.

Bishop of London, warned the reforms could drive more children

:11:16.:11:18.

into poverty, particularly those in large families. The plans are due

:11:19.:11:22.

to be debated in the House of Lords tomorrow. The Government says there

:11:22.:11:25.

are no plans to alter the cap. Three police officers who were

:11:25.:11:27.

stabbed in north-west London yesterday as they tried to arrest a

:11:28.:11:30.

man have undergone surgery. The three constables, along with

:11:30.:11:33.

another officer, were attacked by a man wielding a 12 inch knife

:11:33.:11:36.

outside a butchers in Kingsbury. A 32-year-old man is being held on

:11:36.:11:40.

suspicion of attempted murder. Voting's been taking place in Spain

:11:40.:11:43.

today for national elections that are widely expected to result in

:11:43.:11:47.

the ruling Socialist party being ousted. The vote comes after a week

:11:47.:11:49.

that's seen Spain's borrowing costs reach record levels amid growing

:11:49.:11:54.

concern about the state of its economy. Our Europe Editor Gavin

Hewitt is in Madrid for us this evening. How certain is this result

:12:01.:12:05.

looking? Well, I am outside the People's Party headquarters. You

:12:06.:12:10.

can probably hear the microphones being tested. Some people have

:12:10.:12:15.

already gathered here. Within that centre-right party they expect to

:12:15.:12:22.

emerge as the winners tonight. The party is led by Mariana rejoice.

:12:22.:12:26.

They believe that this street will be full of people celebrating for a

:12:26.:12:30.

party that promised during the election serious and profound

:12:30.:12:36.

austerity cuts. Spain, in recent days, has become part of the centre

:12:36.:12:41.

of the eurozone crisis with its borrowing costs nearing 7%. The

:12:41.:12:45.

markets will be looking very closely at the result here tonight

:12:45.:12:49.

and whether the new Government really has a convincing plan to

:12:49.:12:59.
:12:59.:13:01.

bring down Spanish debt. Thank you. That takes us to the sport.

:13:01.:13:06.

Mid-evening. We start with the latest news from the Barclays

:13:06.:13:11.

Premier League. -- good evening. Liverpool have beaten Chelsea at

:13:11.:13:18.

Stamford Bridge. Liverpool are now level on points with the Londoners.

:13:18.:13:26.

Liverpool and Chelsea have lofty dreams and deep pockets, but

:13:26.:13:31.

niggling seasons so far. Chelsea stumbled in the first half. John

:13:31.:13:36.

Obi Mikel controlled the ball as though we had fallen out of bed.

:13:36.:13:41.

Maxi Rodriguez finished, child's Play. Early in the second half, the

:13:41.:13:44.

Liverpool defence were guilty of slumbering on the job. Florent

:13:44.:13:49.

Malouda crossed to Daniel Sturridge, on as a substitute. He may have

:13:49.:13:54.

been born in Birmingham, but he thinks he can samba. Liverpool

:13:54.:13:57.

could have fallen behind one minute later if it had not been for the

:13:57.:14:01.

brilliance of their goalkeeper, Pepe Reina. Then a former Chelsea

:14:01.:14:06.

player, Glen Johnson, won the game. First Ashley Cole was not met. Then

:14:06.:14:10.

the right back finished like a centre forward. John Terry was left

:14:10.:14:16.

howling. For Chelsea, the unusual pain of back to black Premier

back. Roger Federer has won the opening

:14:27.:14:30.

match of the ATP World Tour finals at the O2 Arena in London. The

:14:30.:14:33.

defending champion is aiming for a record sixth win at the event,

:14:33.:14:36.

which features the top eight players in the world. Today he beat

:14:36.:14:39.

Jo Wilfreid Tsonga in three sets. Rafael Nadal plays Mardy Fish later

:14:39.:14:42.

this evening, while Andy Murray is in action tomorrow.

:14:42.:14:45.

Rugby union now and the Heineken Cup holders Leinster are top of

:14:45.:14:47.

their group after an easy win against Glasgow Warriors. Leinster

:14:47.:14:50.

had already ensured a bonus point win by half time and Isaac Boss

:14:50.:14:53.

rounded off an impressive performance scoring in injury time.

:14:53.:14:56.

38-13 the final score. They now face back-to-back games against

:14:56.:15:00.

Bath in December. And those opponents Bath lie second
