Eight people are arrested in the investigation into corrupt payments

to police and public officials. Five journalists from The Sun,

along with a civil servant, a police officer and a member of the

Armed Forces are being questioned. Protests in Greece as the Prime

Minister warns of "catastrophe" if an austerity plan is rejected by

parliament this weekend. And no handshake, no reconciliation,

for Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra in Good evening.

Five journalists at The Sun newspaper have been arrested by

detectives investigating allegations of corrupt payments to

the police. The paper's associate editor and chief reporter are among

those being questioned along with a Surrey police officer. And for the

first time in the investigation, a member of the Armed Forces and a

civil servant have been detained. In one fell swoop this morning, the

police arrested five of the most senior journalists at The Sun. The

deputy editor, Jeff Webster and Jon Kay, picture editor, John Edwards,

Nick Parker and another reporter John Sturgis, two weeks to the day

when other senior figures were arrested by detectives

investigating alleged payments to police officer. The same same

police operation arrested the former Sun and News of the World

editor, Rebekah Brooks and former Downing Street head of

communications, Andy Call con. The Sun's editor had no comment for

the cameras, but released a For months detectives have been

trawling through 300 million News Corporation e-mails. Today's

arrests followed information given to them by the company.

This is a serious moment for the newspaper and I think what will be

critical in the sort of coming days and weeks will be how the public

respond as we begin to understand what the story is underlying the

arrests. The arrests are significant, not

just the sheer number, but the greatest in a single day, but they

include people who are neither journalists or police officers. An

investigation which began with phone hacking is widening in scope.

As well as a serving police officer, a worker from the Ministry of

Defence and a member of the armed forces were arrested. The first

sign that police are looking at other public bodies.

Journalists at The Sun are furious and feel betrayed. The paper's

owner, Rupert mur do, assured staff it will be -- Rupert Murdoch

The Greek Prime Minister has said his country faces "uncontrolled

economic chaos" and a "social explosion" if it fails to accept

the EU's latest austerity plan. Lucas Papademos was appealing to

MPs to support the cuts in a key vote tomorrow following the

resignation of six members of his governing coalition. Mark Lowen

reports from Athens. Once again they converged on the centre of

Athens, several thousand strong, voicing their fury at a fresh

barrage of austerity. A package of cuts that the Cabinet has approved

to secure the bail out money Greece needs to avoid a disastrous default

next month. Tomorrow, Parliament will vote on the measures. Greece's

hour of reckoning is drawing near. Inside Parliament, party leaders

pleaded with their MPs to back the package. Warning of what failure

might bring. TRANSLATION: We are talking about

chaos, my dear colleagues, we are talking the painful consequences

for the country and specifically for those that don't have any money.

For the unemployed, for the middle and lower income classes.

The public mood is darkening. TRANSLATION: We have come here

because all this must stop. I think we can stop the politicians. We can

overthrow them so the Bill won't pass. We don't want their loans or

their money or their debt. We can't afford it.

Those MPs who are in Parliament, all 300 of them, should resign.

They are traiters. The survival of the euro could be

determined by what happens in this building tomorrow evening. If the

austerity package is thrown out, Greece will go bankrupt and might

be forced to leave the euro and the whole European project could start

to unravel. The stakes could not be higher. As tempers flair, Greece

teeters on the edge of financial collapse. Time is short to pull it

Syria's official news agency says gunmen have killed a senior army

officer in the capital, Damascus. It said three men opened fire on

the brigadier general as he left his home and blamed the attack on

what it called "armed terrorists". It came as government forces

renewed their bombardment of the city of Homs. Activists say more

than 400 people have been killed there in the last week. A man has

been arrested in connection with the death of a man in Edinburgh

last month. The body of Maciej Ciania was found

at his flat in the city. Manchester United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson,

has described the Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez, as a "disgrace" after

he refused to shake hands with United's Patrice Evra. Suarez was

playing his first game against United since serving an eight-match

ban for racially abusing Evra. Andy Swiss is at Old Trafford. Yes,

quite an afternoon here at Old Trafford. Luis Suarez and Patrice

Evra face-to-face once more, the big question, would they shake

hands? Well, they didn't with pretty dramatic consequences.

Instead this. Evra had to be restrained after

Luis Suarez's snub. A fiery first- half finished with Luis Suarez at

boiling point. His manager urging for calm and as the players left at

the break, a melee continued down the tunnel, police and stewards had

to intervene. A football match did break out, two

goals for Wayne Rooney put Manchester United in control.

Before Liverpool responded through who else? Luis Suarez. His His goal

counted for little, but his behaviour prompted a furious

response. The history of that club has got

and he does that. In an atmosphere like today, an atmosphere and all

the build-up to the game, the profile that's on the match and he

does that. It is a disgrace to that football club.

Still the rankor continued as the players left the pitch, Evra's

celebrations sparked yet another fracas. The game finishing just as
