A thousand vessels travel along the River Thames as the Queen's Diamond

:00:04.:00:11.

Jubilee celebrations take to the water. The River pageant, in honour

:00:11.:00:14.

of the Queen's 60-year reign, is the largest to be held in London

:00:14.:00:19.

since the 17th century. The Royal Family were centre stage, joining

:00:19.:00:22.

the procession on a Royal barge decorated with flowers from the

:00:22.:00:29.

Queen's estates. Organisers say more than a million people braved

:00:29.:00:33.

the cold and rain, lining the banks of the river. We all admire the

:00:33.:00:42.

queen. 60 years in the same job, it deserves to be rewarded. It's quite

:00:42.:00:45.

exciting to see her in the driver seat in the boat, it's quite

:00:45.:00:47.

exciting, yes." Our other main story tonight: Around 150 people

:00:47.:00:50.

are feared dead after a plane crashes in a densely populated part

:00:50.:01:00.
:01:00.:01:14.

Good evening. Despite the downpours organisers say more than a million

:01:14.:01:17.

people turned out to witness the Diamond Jubilee river pageant, the

:01:17.:01:22.

biggest spectacle on the Thames for over 300 years. Vessels of every

:01:22.:01:26.

shape and size completed the seven mile long voyage along the river.

:01:26.:01:30.

The Queen and her family took pride of place on the Royal Barge - The

:01:30.:01:33.

Spirit of Chartwell - cheered on by all the well-wishers lining the

:01:33.:01:40.

banks. Our Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell reports. It is

:01:40.:01:43.

the river which has been at the heart of nation's life since London

:01:43.:01:46.

was created and today the Thames provided the setting for this

:01:46.:01:54.

tribute to the nation's monarch. The Queen has seen many spectacular

:01:54.:01:57.

sights in the 60 years of her reign, but never anything quite such as

:01:57.:02:03.

this on the Thames. A flotilla of 1,000 vessel, led on their seven-

:02:03.:02:10.

mile passage by man-powered boats. The flagship Gloriana being helped

:02:10.:02:13.

by the Olympic multi-gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave, and following

:02:13.:02:23.
:02:23.:02:25.

behind, gondolas from Venice and Maori canoeists from New Zealand.

:02:25.:02:28.

The Queen was aboard a river cruiser transformed for the

:02:28.:02:32.

occasion into a Royal Barge. Watching the pageant with her,

:02:32.:02:38.

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Other

:02:38.:02:41.

members of the Royal Family were on other vessels, Princesses Beatrice

:02:41.:02:48.

and Eugenie with their father, the Duke of York. Also on the river the

:02:48.:02:58.
:02:58.:02:58.

Middleton family, mother and father and Kate's sister, Pippa. The

:02:58.:03:02.

flotilla swept down river. Navigating river currents which can

:03:02.:03:05.

often be difficult and dangerous, past the Houses of Parliament and

:03:05.:03:13.

the London Eye. Behind the man- powered vessels came boats of all

:03:13.:03:19.

shapse and sizes with all sorts of cargoes. Among them some of the

:03:19.:03:22.

Dunkirk little ships with their echoes of service and self-

:03:22.:03:32.

sacrifice from the Second World War. And then something you wouldn't

:03:32.:03:36.

really expect to see on the Thames - a horse. A wooden puppet horse to

:03:36.:03:39.

be precise from the award-winning play War Horse on the roof of the

:03:39.:03:42.

National Theatre. Not surprisingly this is something that caught the

:03:42.:03:49.

Queen's eye. By now the man-powered vessels were approaching Tower

:03:49.:03:54.

Bridge. The Royal Barge was making its way rather carefully under the

:03:54.:03:57.

Millennium footbridge, it seemed rather a tight squeeze, as the

:03:57.:04:03.

vessel headed on down river. It's taken nearly three years to plan

:04:03.:04:08.

this. The weather hasn't co- operated, the rain is coming down

:04:08.:04:13.

now. But in a funny kind of a way, it has made the whole event even

:04:13.:04:20.

more British. People quite simply carried on regardless. You know,

:04:20.:04:23.

we're British, we queue in the rain from 6am and stand here watching

:04:23.:04:27.

ships go by and just to support our queen and say thank you or the

:04:27.:04:36.

being aamazing monarch. Votes not boats. Offering a contrary view a

:04:36.:04:38.

group of anti-monarchists, about a hundred gathered to express their

:04:38.:04:47.

opposition to the monarchy. The weather was closing in. The

:04:47.:04:50.

hundreds of thousands who had lined the Thames and manned the boats to

:04:50.:04:52.

show their support and express their gratitude were getting

:04:52.:05:02.
:05:02.:05:05.

drenched. But there was a pageant to conclude and it was finale time.

:05:05.:05:08.

From the river, the London Symphony Orchestra launched into a sea

:05:08.:05:11.

shanty and before long those in the Royal party - one of whom is nearly

:05:11.:05:21.
:05:21.:05:26.

92 - looked a though they wanted to dance a jig! Nobody can deny that

:05:26.:05:30.

it hadn't been quite the show that it might have been at the end, the

:05:30.:05:36.

weather had put paid to that. But the warmth and sentiment that was

:05:36.:05:39.

evident along the River Thames had been really real and it was on a

:05:39.:05:49.

grand scale. The pageant kept calm and carried on and for once it

:05:49.:05:59.

wasn't just Elizabeth The Second who reigned over us. Well London's

:05:59.:06:02.

Battersea Park was just one of the venues where the crowds gathered to

:06:02.:06:06.

join in the celebrations. Hundreds of people queued in the rain to get

:06:06.:06:10.

in. Lorna Gordon spent the day with some of them as they tried to catch

:06:10.:06:18.

a glimpse of the Queen. They queued from early and when the gates open,

:06:18.:06:23.

first a trickle, then a rush of people, keen to secure the best

:06:23.:06:30.

views. Chairs and blankets marking their spots. The Jubilee! It is my

:06:30.:06:35.

third one, I have done the similar ver and gold and we will wait

:06:35.:06:41.

another ten year and do next one. We all admire the Queen. Along the

:06:41.:06:47.

Thames the banks and bridges taken over and then a sea of waving flags

:06:47.:06:57.
:06:57.:06:57.

when the Queen came into sight and cheers. Hip, hip, hooray! It was

:06:57.:07:04.

good seeing all the gold and the guns and that. It made it look cool.

:07:04.:07:09.

It is the first royal occasion I have been to. It must have taken 60

:07:09.:07:16.

years to plan. Such an effort. places the crowd was ten deep.

:07:16.:07:20.

People grabbing any vantage point they could as the boats appeared.

:07:20.:07:25.

It is a three-day plan. We're going to go to Buckingham on Tuesday and

:07:25.:07:31.

see it all. When I saw the Queen, I felt so excited. It is like... I

:07:31.:07:37.

have never seen this before. It is exciting to see her in the driving

:07:37.:07:44.

seat of the boat. It is good. Telescopes and cameras capturing

:07:44.:07:49.

the river pageant. And for those not able to get close to the water,

:07:49.:07:54.

there were other ways of joining in. The Queen has now passed, but there

:07:54.:08:03.

are still hundreds of boats to go and each one gets a cheer. The

:08:03.:08:10.

crowd enthusiastic, good natured and patriotic, an outpouring of

:08:10.:08:18.

affection on the river lined with people joining to salute the queen.

:08:18.:08:21.

The celebrations were not just in London, many thousands held their

:08:21.:08:24.

own street parties across the country. More than 9,500 road

:08:24.:08:26.

closure applications were submitted for England and Wales alone. Our

:08:26.:08:29.

Correspondent Chris Buckler reports from the Big Jubilee Lunch in North

:08:29.:08:39.
:08:39.:08:41.

Yorkshire. Across the UK, it had been planned that think days bring

:08:41.:08:47.

a nation and neighbours together. But to nark queen's Diamond Jubilee,

:08:48.:08:52.

people had to battle. Ow -- but to mark the queen's Diamond Jubilee,

:08:53.:08:57.

people had to bat it will weather. People haven't been put off by the

:08:57.:09:05.

rain. People have been baking fog - - baking for weeks. 60 years ago in

:09:05.:09:14.

York they held a street party. This couple were among the crowd then.

:09:14.:09:19.

And six decades on, they were back in the same place in Honor hour of

:09:19.:09:24.

the same monarch. Coming out and seeing what has gone on in the

:09:24.:09:29.

whole country, it tells people what we're and what we do in Britain.

:09:29.:09:34.

Here as in so many streets, there was an open invitation. This event

:09:34.:09:39.

about the community as well as the monarchy. What do you think of the

:09:39.:09:45.

part Ji? They're having a blast and they look like they're enjoying it.

:09:45.:09:49.

They're a bit wet maybe! People went out of their way to make this

:09:49.:09:55.

day feel special. In this pub in Leicestershire was relaunched as a

:09:55.:10:03.

ship. But big lunches planned for some streets were threatened by the

:10:03.:10:08.

weather. Not that it stopped them in Birmingham. They just moved it

:10:08.:10:11.

indoor. We decided yesterday that the weather was going to be awful

:10:11.:10:16.

and we needed to move in from the street to the house and

:10:16.:10:24.

unfortunately it is my house and here we are! Others made similar

:10:24.:10:29.

decisions. In angle sea what was to have been a beach party was held in

:10:29.:10:34.

the village hall. Although the sun did shine in some places, including

:10:34.:10:39.

in Scotland, where the tables were laid out for people to come

:10:39.:10:43.

together over a Jubilee lunch. In Northern Ireland, many dressed for

:10:44.:10:48.

the occasion. As they re-created the 50s, the decade when the Queen

:10:48.:10:55.

came to the throne. There have been a few strange sights, but people

:10:55.:11:00.

have gone to a huge centre to make today memorable. And the flags may

:11:00.:11:07.

have got a bit wet, but that did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm.

:11:07.:11:10.

People will continue to wo watch the forecast, because the long

:11:10.:11:17.

weekend of events has only just begun. Other news now and a

:11:17.:11:20.

passenger plane in Nigeria has crashed in a densely populated part

:11:20.:11:24.

of the country's largest city Lagos. Around 150 people were on board.

:11:24.:11:27.

Witnesses say they saw the plane strike a building and burst into

:11:27.:11:30.

flames. The Nigerian President has declared three days of national

:11:30.:11:32.

mourning. Our West Africa Correspondent Will Ross has the

:11:32.:11:42.
:11:42.:11:45.

latest. All that is left of the aircraft is this charred wreckage.

:11:45.:11:52.

There were more than 150 people on board. As first feared, none

:11:52.:11:59.

survived. It crashed in a densely pop lated area of Lagos, causing

:11:59.:12:04.

more casualties on the ground. People reported hearing a deafening

:12:04.:12:12.

explosion. The aircraft was coming in to land at Lagos from the

:12:12.:12:22.
:12:22.:12:22.

Nigerian capital Abuja. The company was owned by Danna Air. The airline

:12:22.:12:27.

had built up a good reputation, although last month a similar

:12:27.:12:34.

aircraft made an emergency landing in Lagos, due to a technical fault.

:12:34.:12:39.

Nigeria does not have a good air safety record with three similar

:12:40.:12:43.

disasters in the last decade. While the investigates here continues,

:12:43.:12:48.

the president of Nigeria has called for throw days of national mourning.

:12:48.:12:54.

-- three days of national mourning. David Cameron has defended his

:12:54.:12:56.

refusal to launch an investigation into Jeremy Hunt's handling of News

:12:56.:12:59.

Corporation's bid for BSkyB. Labour insists the Culture Secretary

:12:59.:13:04.

breached the ministerial code, and has called for an inquiry. But

:13:04.:13:07.

speaking on the Andrew Marr show today, the Prime Minister insisted

:13:07.:13:09.

the Culture Secretary had acted wisely and fairly while dealing

:13:09.:13:16.

with the bid. The advice I was given is what mattered was not what

:13:16.:13:20.

Jeremy Hunt had said publikely or privately. But how he was going to

:13:20.:13:26.

conduct himself during the bid. That is how we should judge him.

:13:26.:13:31.

Did he judge this bid wisely? And he did. He took legal adds vice,

:13:31.:13:36.

which he didn't have to and he followed that advice and did many

:13:36.:13:41.

things not in the interests of the Murdochs and that side of things. I

:13:41.:13:44.

think he gave a good account of himself to the inquiry and to

:13:44.:13:49.

Parliament and I think that is the key points. A soldier from 3rd

:13:49.:13:51.

Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment has been killed in Afghanistan. The

:13:51.:13:54.

Ministry of Defence says he was on patrol in the Nahr-e-Saraj district

:13:54.:13:57.

of Helmand Province and came under small arms fire. His family has

:13:57.:14:04.

been informed. In Syria, President Bashar al-Assad says his country is

:14:04.:14:07.

facing a war waged by external forces. Addressing parliament, he

:14:07.:14:10.

denied his Government had anything to do with the Houla massacre in

:14:10.:14:13.

which more than 100 people were killed, saying not even monsters

:14:13.:14:16.

would carry out such an ugly crime. Our Middle East Correspondent, Jim

:14:16.:14:26.
:14:26.:14:27.

Muir, reports. His first public speech since January and since the

:14:27.:14:33.

howl what massacre in which nearly 50 children and more than 30 women

:14:33.:14:40.

were slaughtered. He condemned the killings. TRANSLATION: We will

:14:40.:14:44.

remain ashamed every time we remember howl what and I hope that

:14:44.:14:48.

the massacre will not remain engraved in the minds of the

:14:48.:14:51.

children. But the president insisted that his forces had

:14:51.:14:54.

nothing to do with the massacre. Like all the violence in the

:14:54.:14:59.

country, he blamed it on armed terrorist gangs, carrying out a

:14:59.:15:04.

foreign plot to destroy sir ya, because of its resistance to Israel.

:15:04.:15:10.

We're facing attempts to weaken Syria and to breach its sovereignty,

:15:10.:15:14.

killings and destruction, ignorance. There was nothing in the speech for

:15:14.:15:18.

the peace enswroi, Kofi Annan. He is urging Bashar al-Assad to

:15:18.:15:21.

withdraw his army now. The Americans are looking to Russia to

:15:21.:15:30.

help persuade him. We all have to intensify our efforts to achieve a

:15:30.:15:35.

political transition. And Russia has to be at the table helping that.

:15:35.:15:42.

The Syrian people, want and deserve change. In Tripoli in Lebanon,

:15:42.:15:46.

clashes between pro-and anti-Syrian fabg shuns highlighted Kofi Annan's

:15:46.:15:56.
:15:56.:15:58.

fears that a sectarian civil war Police investigating the death of a

:15:58.:16:01.

15 year old girl in Liverpool have arrested a teenager on suspicion of

:16:01.:16:06.

supplying drugs. Tributes have been paid to Rose Farley who fell ill at

:16:06.:16:09.

a party on Friday evening and died yesterday at Alder Hey Children's

:16:09.:16:18.

Hospital. Fiona Trott reports. Tributes for a teenager whose

:16:18.:16:21.

sudden death has shocked at thousands of people who visited

:16:21.:16:27.

this internet site. Rose Farley was enjoying a night out at the Social

:16:27.:16:32.

Club on Friday. Hours later, she died in hospital. There are reports

:16:32.:16:36.

her drink may have been laced with drugs. We're not ruling anything

:16:36.:16:40.

out at the moment. There has been a post-mortem and the results are

:16:40.:16:44.

pending. It will be some days before we are fully sighted on that.

:16:44.:16:49.

But that is one line of inquiry we are looking up. A few days ago,

:16:49.:16:54.

police in Liverpool were warning people here about a dangerous

:16:54.:16:58.

Ecstasy tablet which was circulating the streets. They've

:16:58.:17:02.

spoken to police in Cambridgeshire and Bournemouth about similar

:17:02.:17:06.

sudden deaths in the past two weeks. It is not yet known if the 15-year-

:17:06.:17:10.

old Rose Farley died from a drug she did not even know she had taken.

:17:10.:17:14.

But it is something which is worrying parents here, and it may

:17:14.:17:19.

encourage people to come forward with information.

:17:19.:17:22.

There's yet more bad news for the England football team struggling

:17:22.:17:25.

with injuries before Euro 2012. This time the defender Gary Cahill

:17:25.:17:29.

has been ruled out of the squad just eight days before their first

:17:29.:17:32.

game against France. The Chelsea player suffered a double fracture

:17:32.:17:37.

of his jaw in last night's 1-0 win over Belgium. England have already

:17:37.:17:41.

lost Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and John Ruddy through injury. But

:17:41.:17:44.

there's better news concerning John Terry who has been given the all-

:17:44.:17:49.

clear following a hamstring problem. That's all from us tonight. In a

:17:49.:17:52.
