An apology from the company that's failed to recruit thousands of

:00:04.:00:10.

security staff for the Olympics. As more troops are drafted in tonight

:00:10.:00:13.

to fill the security gap, questions remain over why the problem wasn't

:00:13.:00:19.

identified earlier. UN observers in Syria say

:00:19.:00:21.

opposition activists and army defectors were targeted in a

:00:21.:00:27.

village where it's claimed a massacre took place.

:00:27.:00:30.

The London to Sheffield rail line is set for a half billion pound

:00:30.:00:34.

upgrade. And from Chelsea to China. Didier

:00:34.:00:44.
:00:44.:00:56.

Drogba says its for the challenge Good evening. The chief executive

:00:56.:00:59.

of the security firm G4S has said he's sorry, disappointed and

:00:59.:01:01.

embarrassed that it's failed to recruit enough security guards for

:01:01.:01:06.

the Olympics. Nick Buckles said the company would meet the cost of

:01:06.:01:10.

deploying thousands of military personnel to replace them. He said

:01:10.:01:13.

that he only found out about the recruitment problems just eight or

:01:13.:01:16.

nine days ago. Tonight, more members of the armed forces have

:01:16.:01:19.

been drafted in to fill the security gap. Richard Lister

:01:19.:01:27.

reports. Arriving at London's excel Centre

:01:27.:01:30.

tonight, some of the thousands of troops brought in to fill the gap

:01:31.:01:36.

in Olympic security. Just days ago, G4S was apparently committed to

:01:36.:01:40.

delivering the civilian staff needed to guard the venues. Now the

:01:40.:01:43.

company is having to pay for military personnel to do the job

:01:43.:01:49.

and facing a loss of up to 50 million. Its chief executive says

:01:49.:01:53.

they underestimate the task. security of the Olympics has always

:01:53.:01:57.

been delivered by a large number of individual elements and we were

:01:57.:02:01.

part of that. Clearly, we can't deliver, and we are very

:02:01.:02:04.

disappointed about that, and embarrassed. And very sorry about

:02:04.:02:10.

it. This is a problem which has been years in the making. When work

:02:10.:02:15.

began under Labour on the Olympic Stadium, there were plans for just

:02:15.:02:18.

10,000 security staff but in 2010, the coalition government

:02:18.:02:21.

commissioned a review of that figure but it was not until last

:02:22.:02:26.

December that it decided to double the number of security staff and

:02:26.:02:31.

the military were asked to supply more than 13,000 personnel but the

:02:31.:02:38.

rest was provided by G4S. Now the company says it can't meet that

:02:38.:02:43.

target the MoD is making up the shortfall, increasing the number of

:02:43.:02:47.

servicemen and women to 17,000, more than are serving in

:02:47.:02:53.

Afghanistan. G4S is still time to provide as many security guards as

:02:53.:02:55.

it can. The Home Office said today the government had contingency

:02:56.:03:00.

plans in place and remains focused on delivering Olympic security. But

:03:00.:03:05.

one of those who signed off on the original Security Plan 8 years ago

:03:05.:03:10.

says there are important questions to be answered. Did G4S go into a

:03:10.:03:14.

kind of denial about their inability to deliver this? What was

:03:14.:03:19.

the oversight from the Home Office? Where did that fail? I hope the

:03:19.:03:23.

process will be subject to the most rigorous parliamentary scrutiny

:03:23.:03:27.

once the Olympic Games are over but now we have got to focus with less

:03:27.:03:31.

than two weeks to go, on making sure they are safe insecure.

:03:31.:03:36.

first of the Olympic athletes are due to ride within days but behind

:03:36.:03:38.

the scenes two parliamentary committees are now gearing up to

:03:38.:03:42.

find out what went wrong with the plan to deliver the biggest

:03:42.:03:46.

security operation in Britain since World War II.

:03:46.:03:50.

Our Political Correspondent Robin Brant is at the Home Office. Robin,

:03:50.:03:53.

there's less than two weeks to the start of the Games. How confindent

:03:53.:04:00.

is the government that these security issues will be resolved?

:04:00.:04:04.

Its top of the pile here because the woman in charge, Theresa May,

:04:04.:04:08.

is the person who has responsibility for delivering

:04:08.:04:11.

security of the Olympic Games but what is clear tonight is there are

:04:11.:04:14.

serious questions about the oversight of this now disastrous

:04:14.:04:18.

contract. She found out a few days ago, Wednesday, about how bad

:04:18.:04:23.

things have gone. The man in charge of G4S said he knew it nine days

:04:23.:04:27.

ago saw there is a gap there. That in spite of the fact the BBC was

:04:27.:04:32.

told meetings were going on every day for the last three weeks to

:04:32.:04:35.

discuss security plans with people from the Home Office, Crowe company

:04:35.:04:41.

and the organising committee at these meetings -- G4S. There is an

:04:41.:04:47.

issue for them to address their. G4S say the officials here have had

:04:47.:04:52.

total visibility about what they had tried to do about being in a

:04:52.:04:55.

transparent process but the Home Office was as surprised as anyone

:04:55.:04:59.

when it was revealed how bad things have gone, so tonight the Labour

:04:59.:05:03.

Party are urging Labour -- Theresa May to go to parliament on Monday

:05:03.:05:09.

to update MPs. A party insider said to me if the officials here had

:05:09.:05:14.

been relying solely on G4S for their assurances, they have been

:05:14.:05:18.

behaving just like patsies. Thank you.

:05:18.:05:21.

In Syria, UN observers today entered the village where

:05:21.:05:23.

opposition activists claim 200 people were massacred in a

:05:23.:05:25.

government assault on Thursday. They have said it appears that

:05:25.:05:28.

opposition activists' and army defectors' houses were targeted in

:05:28.:05:31.

the attack on Tremseh. The Syrian government maintains that it

:05:31.:05:35.

carried out a military operation against what it calls terrorists.

:05:35.:05:38.

Jim Muir reports from Beirut. You may find some of the images in his

:05:38.:05:48.

report distressing. It took them 48 hours to get there

:05:48.:05:52.

but the UN's observers finally made it to Tremseh to try to answer the

:05:52.:05:56.

question, was that a massacre? Clearly, there was a government

:05:56.:06:01.

attack using heavy weapons. That much the Observer saw from afar at

:06:01.:06:09.

the time. The villagers are angry. Look, Kofi Annan, is this your work,

:06:09.:06:15.

this man asks? The people here say the attack was indiscriminate. They

:06:15.:06:19.

came from all directions with tanks and helicopters, bombarded our

:06:19.:06:27.

homes and more than 200 Martyrs were killed, he says. But Syrian

:06:28.:06:32.

state TV gave a totally different picture. Its English-language

:06:32.:06:37.

broadcast said heavily armed rebels and terrorists set up hideouts in

:06:37.:06:40.

the village. The army attack, killing many of them and capturing

:06:40.:06:45.

others who, it said, confessed what they had been up to.

:06:45.:06:50.

TRANSLATION: I'm a resident in Tremseh and my job was to fire

:06:50.:06:55.

brigade video clips and then send them to the internet. But activists

:06:55.:06:58.

have produced a surprisingly little bit here footage to back their

:06:58.:07:02.

claims of a massacre of civilians. They showed the bodies of about 15

:07:02.:07:06.

young men of fighting age. Very different from the massacre two

:07:06.:07:09.

months ago when there were harrowing pictures of dozens of

:07:09.:07:15.

dead children and women. The mass burial of bodies in shrouds

:07:15.:07:19.

apparently mainly adults also seemed to involve far fewer than

:07:19.:07:23.

the 200 who activists said died but the West has seized on their

:07:24.:07:27.

version to press for stronger measures against Syria at the

:07:27.:07:32.

Security Council. The observers will be trying to reconcile all

:07:32.:07:36.

these claims and to determine how many people were killed, who they

:07:36.:07:46.

were, and who was responsible. Massacre or no massacre, in places

:07:46.:07:51.

like this, and many others, where violence rages on day after day,

:07:51.:07:54.

thus lighter towards civil war is moving well ahead of diplomatic

:07:54.:08:04.
:08:04.:08:06.

efforts to halt the carnage. The main rail line from London to

:08:06.:08:10.

Sheffield is to be upgraded as part of a 9 billion programme of

:08:10.:08:12.

government investment. Business leaders have welcomed the plan to

:08:12.:08:14.

electrify the Midland Mainline route, which they say will protect

:08:14.:08:20.

hundreds of jobs. From Sheffield, Danny Savage reports.

:08:20.:08:24.

Monday's announcement on upgrading the railways is thought to be the

:08:24.:08:30.

biggest investment in train travel for generations. Overall, it could

:08:30.:08:37.

be worth 9 billion. Here in Sheffield, the faster service to

:08:37.:08:42.

the capital takes two hours, seven minutes at the moment. A lot longer

:08:42.:08:45.

than the links to some other northern towns and cities. But in a

:08:45.:08:51.

few years' time, these diesels will be replaced with electric trains,

:08:51.:08:54.

more environmentally friendly rolling stock, bring in faster

:08:54.:08:58.

services. The electrification of this, the Midlands Main Line, has

:08:58.:09:04.

been called for by businesses and politicians for years. What we are

:09:04.:09:08.

going to do is attract investors to come up north, see what we have got

:09:08.:09:11.

to offer, and make the necessary investments to make the economy

:09:11.:09:17.

grow. The cost is said to be about 500 million. Some of the money

:09:17.:09:21.

will come from the taxpayer and some of it will come from Network

:09:21.:09:26.

rail borrowing the cash. But there is also concern from some

:09:26.:09:30.

politicians and rail users that train fares will have to rise, too,

:09:30.:09:35.

which would be well above the rate of inflation. But Monday's

:09:35.:09:39.

announcement is not just about the Midland Main Line. It's about other

:09:39.:09:45.

routes, too. And could create jobs in places such as the bombarded a

:09:45.:09:50.

plant in Derby. Speed limits on many rural roads in

:09:50.:09:53.

England could be cut from 60 miles- per-hour to 40 under government

:09:53.:09:58.

proposals aimed at improving road safety. Figures from the Department

:09:58.:10:02.

of Transport show that in 2010 more than two thirds of road deaths in

:10:02.:10:05.

the UK were on rural roads. Under the proposals, local authorities in

:10:05.:10:08.

England would also have greater freedom to introduce 20 mile-per-

:10:08.:10:18.
:10:18.:10:19.

hour limits in urban areas. The latest bad weather has caused

:10:19.:10:22.

more flooding and disruption across parts of England. In Shropshire,

:10:22.:10:25.

emergency workers had to rescue an 81-year-old who had became trapped

:10:25.:10:28.

in her home overnight by rising floodwaters. And in Caxton in

:10:28.:10:30.

Cambridgeshire, drivers abandoned their cars after roads there became

:10:30.:10:35.

impassable. Prolific Hollywood producer Richard

:10:35.:10:38.

Zanuck has died of a heart attack. The 77-year-old was best known for

:10:38.:10:41.

his work on films such as the blockbuster thriller Jaws, the

:10:41.:10:44.

Oscar-winning Driving Miss Daisy and a string of Tim Burton

:10:44.:10:54.
:10:54.:10:55.

fantasies. Peter Bowes has his # The hills are alive with the

:10:55.:11:05.

He made some of the most memorable films. Richard Zanuck was not a

:11:05.:11:08.

household name but his reputation was second to none as a producer.

:11:08.:11:14.

He was the son of Hoyle would -- Hollywood royalty, his father who

:11:14.:11:19.

put it in charge of twentieth- century Fox. At 28 he was the end

:11:19.:11:23.

his studio chief in history. But for much of his career, Richard

:11:23.:11:29.

Zanuck was an independent film- maker. He made Jaws with Steven

:11:29.:11:34.

Spielberg. In a statement, Steven Spielberg said his long-time friend

:11:34.:11:38.

was a cornerstone of the film industry and taught him everything

he knew about producing. You're going to need a bigger boat!

picture at the Oscars. What are you doing? I'm driving you to the store.

:11:58.:12:02.

And his work with Tim Burton produced hit after hit. It's very

:12:02.:12:08.

exciting, I must say, I've made the last four pictures with Tim Burton

:12:08.:12:11.

and it probably the reason I'm still making pictures after all

:12:11.:12:15.

these years, because he hits such an invigorating experience working

:12:15.:12:20.

with Tim. He is such a individualist, and it's always

:12:20.:12:25.

exciting. His sudden death deprives Hollywood of one of its most

revered film makers. Richard Zanuck who died aged 77.

Thanks. London 2012 is less than two weeks away, so atheletes are

medal contenders. Here's Alex South. They came expecting to see

Britain's brightest medal hopes. But one was no where to be seen.

Whilst Americas Christian Taylor was easing to victory on a triple

jumps, Phillips the dough was treating an apology for pulling out

:13:11.:13:16.

of the event citing muscle tightness. Fortunately, the

:13:16.:13:21.

reigning Olympic 400 metre champion put on a show. Gold in Beijing. She

:13:35.:13:36.

Earlier, Goldie Sayers, who is 30 on Monday, gave herself the perfect

:13:36.:13:40.

presents, a new British record and beating the current Olympic

:13:40.:13:47.

champion in the process. Roderick Abbott was unable to continue the

:13:47.:13:50.

form which has seen him rise to third in the world rankings. He

:13:50.:13:55.

finished second but at least avoiding injury unlike Tiffany

:13:55.:14:00.

porter who was inconsolable after pulling up in the hurdles, but says

:14:00.:14:04.

she will be OK for the Olympic Games. Fingers are crossed for her

:14:04.:14:09.

and for the weather to improve. The open top bus parade seemed ill-

:14:09.:14:12.

conceived but the sentiment rang true.

:14:12.:14:16.

Bradley Wiggins set a new record tomorrow. He'll be the first

:14:16.:14:19.

British man in the Tour de France to wear the overall leader's yellow

:14:19.:14:22.

jersey for seven consecutive days breaking the record set by Chris

:14:22.:14:24.

Boardman. In today's 13th stage, victory on Bastille Day was

:14:25.:14:29.

reserved for Germany's Andre Greipel. He clinched it in a

:14:29.:14:31.

dramatic sprint finish. Wiggins finished safely in the bunch,

:14:31.:14:36.

retaining his position as race leader.

:14:36.:14:39.

Leeds Rhinos will play either Warrington or Huddersfield in next

:14:39.:14:41.

month's Challenge Cup final after victory over favourites Wigan in a

:14:41.:14:48.

thrilling semi final at the Galpharm Stadium. Three tries in 11

:14:48.:14:50.

minutes, including this one from Ben Jones-Bishop, put Leeds 16-0

:14:50.:14:56.

ahead. But the Super League leaders kept fighting back. In a first half

:14:56.:15:00.

that produced a total of nine tries, Ben Flower helped Wigan reduce the

:15:00.:15:04.

deficit. A controversial try from Zak Hardaker put Leeds 16 points

:15:04.:15:07.

ahead. Although TV replays subsequently showed a knock on in

:15:07.:15:13.

the build up. Leeds went on to win 39-28 and book their place in the

:15:13.:15:17.

final. British boxing is taking centre

:15:17.:15:22.

stage both in London and in Las Vegas tonight. A heavyweight bout a

:15:22.:15:28.

Upton Park between David Haye and Derick Chisora. Later, Amir Khan

:15:28.:15:31.

steps into the ring in the early hours in America for the light

:15:31.:15:36.

welterweight unification bout with Danny Garcia. So fighting for both

:15:36.:15:41.

the WBC and WBA belts. A tough encounter for confident Khan

:15:41.:15:44.

against the undefeated Garcia, whose last victory earned him that

:15:44.:15:54.

WBC belt. Hundreds of football fans turned

:15:54.:15:56.

out at Shanghai airport to welcome Didier Drogba. The former Chelsea

:15:56.:15:59.

striker's deal with struggling Shanghai Shenhua makes him one of

:15:59.:16:02.

the highest paid footballers in the world. John Sudworth was there and

:16:02.:16:09.

a warning of some flash photography in his report.

:16:09.:16:14.

It's a long way from Chelsea to China, not least in terms of the

:16:14.:16:17.

standard of football. But Didier Drogba's arrival this morning

:16:17.:16:24.

proves one thing. Ambition and money are not in short supply here.

:16:24.:16:27.

For a strike at the very top of his game it may seem like an

:16:27.:16:34.

extraordinary move. His new club would struggle to beat a lower

:16:34.:16:38.

division side on-and-off day, let alone Chelsea, for whom he won this

:16:38.:16:42.

year's Champions' League Trophy with a final kick of the day. And

:16:42.:16:49.

yet, Shanghai have reportedly doubled his salary. Just between

:16:49.:16:55.

you, me and the BBC, are you really being paid at 200,000 a week?

:16:55.:17:01.

Between me and you and the BBC, really I did not come here with the

:17:01.:17:06.

idea of making a lot of money. I came here because it's a completely

:17:06.:17:11.

different challenge than what I've seen in Europe before. His old

:17:11.:17:15.

team-mate Nicolas Anelka is already playing for Shanghai and is not the

:17:15.:17:20.

only club that forking out on foreign talent to gain publicity

:17:20.:17:24.

for the businesses but there may be wider benefits, too. Chinese

:17:24.:17:27.

footballers notoriously corrupt but it's trying to clean up its act

:17:27.:17:32.

with dozens of officials, referees and players convicted of match-

:17:32.:17:38.

fixing in the past few months. The hope is that the arrival of big-

:17:39.:17:47.

name players marks a new era and will help to raise standards.

:17:47.:17:50.

Shanghai has high hopes for Didier Drogba. Its football team is

:17:50.:17:53.

languishing close to the bottom of the league but some fans will fear

:17:53.:17:57.

that all the money in China, and there is a lot of that at the

:17:57.:18:02.

moment, won't be enough to fix the rot at the heart of the game.

:18:02.:18:10.

That's the sport. Back to you, Kate. Thank you very much. The main news

:18:10.:18:18.

tonight: G4S, who has failed to recruit staff of four Olympics has
