Good afternoon. Welcome to the BBC News at One from our Olympic studio.

Thousands of sports fans have been pouring into Olympic venues for the

first full day of the Games. It follows last night's spectacular

opening ceremony watched by some 27 million people in the UK alone and

many more around the world. From the Olympic Park, Clive Myrie

reports. Now it's their time. No heads of

state here, just ordinary people albeit accompanied by a marching

band, entering the Olympic Park for the first time. Positive vibe on

the Tube, everyone's talking to each other asking where are you

going, what have you got tickets for. It's fantastic, I want to cry.

We have been here for a month leading oup the Games, it's a once

in a lifetime experience. estimated 250,000 people are

expected to flood through the gates every single day of the Games. But

it's sobering to remember that on television, this corner of East

London will be the focus of many millions more people around the

world. It's thought one billion people

globally watched the opening party for the Games, 26.9 million of them

here in the UK. It was a vision of Britannia that ruled the airwaves.

It was a ceremony few directors envied taking on after the dazzle

of Beijing but the conseason suss seems to be Danny Boyle waved some

magic chronicling chapters of Britain's past.

There was humour too. Good evening, Mr Bond.

A spoof in which Daniel Craig playing James Bond met the Queen at

Buckingham Palace and then later apparently parachuting with Her

Majesty into the Olympic stadium. It was a moment of invention few

will forget Elizabeth II, the most unlikely of Bond Girls. And to top

off the evening, not one but seven talented young athletes given the

honour of lighting the cauldron. The London Olympics have been given

an almighty start, leaving the Mayor of the City rather pleased

with himself. Just call me jingoistic,

shaufnistic whatever, I think we've knocked the spots off Beijing or

whatever. I'm entitled to that view because I'm the Mayor of the host

City. It was brilliant. The Queen visited the Aquatics Centre centre

at the Olympic Park, the scene she hopes of many a British triumph. At

the same time, there were clearing away the set of last night's

opening ceremony where Danny Boyle told Britain's story. Now it's the

time for GB's athletes to write their own chapters of success.

There are high hopes that Britain's first medal of the Games could come

later today with mark Cavendish aiming for gold in the cycling road

race which is under way right now and Dan Roan is near the finishing

line for us. Thanks, Ben. In around three hours'

time from now, we'll discover whether or not Mark Cavendish can

deliver the gold the country so craves. I'm standing in front of

Buckingham Palace, the finishing line is around 500 yards down the

Mall to my right. Will this prove a stunning backdrop for Mark coven

dish and a win? Will he do what he's done so many times before and

launch a last-minute surge towards the line? We'll discover that

around 4 o'clock this afternoon. Looking good for Team GB with the

support of what he calls a Dream Team, including Bradley Wiggins,

the Tour de France champion, huge support lining the route throughout

West London and the Surrey hills. Cavendish is very much in form, but

this is road race cycling, anything can happen. We have seen stray dogs

across the road and crashes already. There's a break away group of 12

riders who're around six minutes ahead of Mark Cavendish and the

rest of the British riders. Cavendish missed out on a medal in

Beijing? Can pe put it right today? We'll find out in around three

hours' time -- can he put it right today? Swimmers and gymnasts have

been in action this morning and the first gold of twoil has been won

today by the Chinese in the shooting. Here is Andy Swiss with a

round-up of the day's events so far. At 11.20 at Woolwich Barracks,

London's first golden moment. China's Yii becoming the first

champion in the air liefl, the opening triumph on a morning when

so many athletes began their quest for glory -- air rifle. At the

Aquatics Centre, one of the greatest Olympians of all,

America's Michael Phelps, but he had a scare. Despite winning his

heat, his slow time meant he only scraped into the final of the 400

metres medley. There was no such worries for one

of Britain's medal hopes in the pool, Hannah Miley safely through

to tonight's women's final. Meanwhile, the rowing got under way

at Eton dawny and in some style for Glover and Staning, the pair

through to the final in Olympic record time, inspired by the home

crowd. Nothing can prepare us from the world go to the beep at the

finish, the support and the cheers, it was absolutely brilliant.

At Lord's meanwhile, not such good news for Britain's Archers, the

men's team fell at the first hurdle, soundly beaten by Ukraine. This was

a day about the venues, as well as the athletes, as many of London's

most famous locations opened their doors. The entennis was under way

at Wimbledon, at Greenwich Park, the first equestrian action with

the opening day of the dressage. At the north Greenwich Arena,

Britain's men's gymnastics team began their quest for a place many

the finals. All of them will be dreaming of this - a place on top

of the medal podium and the glory of Olympic gold.

In other news, the Army has begun an offensive against rebel fighters

in Syria's second city Aleppo as they try to regain ground lost to

opposition fighters a week ago. The rebels say they are being attacked

by artillery and helicopter gunships, as a Syrian newspaper

said the battle in Aleppo would crush what it called terrorists.

The Chancellor has welcomed a decision here by the ratings agency

Standard & Poors to maintain Britain's triple-A rating. George

Osborne said the decision showed there was confidence that the UK
