Good afternoon. In the past half hour, police have been giving more

details of the attacks in Cardiff in which more than a dozen people,

among them children, were victims of a hit-and-run. One woman died in

the incident yesterday. For the very latest, live now to our

correspondent Hywel Griffith. A yes, in the last half-hour, police have

confirmed they believe the driver of this than not only hit people

with his vehicle but got out and assaulted pedestrians.

The details of this case are harrowing. The casualties include

seven children aged from 23 months to seven years. Two adults are also

critically ill in hospital. For a warning that this report contains

children. Flowers have been made at the Place where Karina Menzies was

killed. The 32-year-old was hit by the full force of the van as it

mounted the pavement. Paramedics were unable to revive her. Police

arrested the driver after tracking this white man through the city.

evidence to suggest that the person we have in custody has physically

assaulted people outside of the vehicle. There was a weapon which

we are looking to recover and identified from witness evidence

and we have a suggestion there was a weapon which was used. Officers

have been standing guard outside a hospital where casualties are still

being treated. They include two- year-old Amelia May, thrown from

her pushchair as the van hit her mother. Both survived. It is like I

haven't slept. It goes through my mind that they were both dead. It

was just really shocking. With at least five separate crime scenes,

police investigations are spreading across Cardiff. Many here are

struggling to understand what could have triggered these crimes.

Officers have also appealed for information about a black Renault

Cleo which was seen driving towards the area at about 3:25pm yesterday

but driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway. They believe it

may have been only minutes before the first hit-and-run took place.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man is still being questioned on suspicion

of murder. If A woman and two young children have

died in a house fire in North Wales. The 20-year-old woman, a four-year-

old boy and a two-year-old girl were pronounced dead by

firefighters who were called to the property near Prestatyn. A man and

a 15-month-old baby were taken to hospital. Police have arrested two

people. Detectives are trying to trace a

Leeds United fan who ran onto the pitch last night and slapped the

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper. Chris Kirkland was knocked to the

ground and the fan ran off. It followed violent scenes involving

both sets of fans. The Football Association says it is

investigating. Thousands of Union members are

gathering in central London to protest against the Government's

spending cuts. The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, will address a rally

in Hyde Park later, where some Union leaders are expected to call

for a general strike. Live now to The march has just set off within

the last couple of minutes and we have just been passed by the first

people. There is quite a party atmosphere, as you can hear, but

the message from these people is serious, and that is that the cuts

are too harsh. That is what I am hearing most. I had spoken to

people who have come here from all over the country, many of them

families with young children. Some have taken part in process --

protests like these before but others say it is their first day

and they are here because they are being affected by the cuts and they

want to send a message to the Government. That is why they have

joined this March. They are going to make their way to Hyde Park

where there will be a rally this afternoon. And they will make the

Labour Leader Ed Miliband. He told the TUC today that the Government's

austerity measures have led to a national disaster. Regarding Ed

Miliband speaking at the rally this afternoon, Grant Shapps, the party

chairman, has said you cannot be clear about attending a march which

calls for an end to the austerity. Labour has accused David Cameron of

being weak for not sacking Andrew Mitchell sooner. The chief whip

stepped down last night, saying the row over his confrontation with

Downing Street police last month had made it impossible for him to

fulfil his duties. But he admitted swearing at an officer. He's been

replaced by the former Leader of the House, Sir George Young.

Ceremonies are being held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle

of El Alamein. The fighting between the Allies and the Germans and

Italians is considered to be one of the key turning points of the

Second World War. Veterans have been gathering in Egypt from around

the world. From El Alamein, Jon Leyne reports.
