More calls for calm in Belfast. Politicians say they are not giving

:00:09.:00:15.

up in the face of protests about the Union flag.

:00:15.:00:19.

1,000 people attend a rally for peace, demanding an end to the

:00:19.:00:23.

weeks of violence. An eight-year- old British girl is shot dead while

:00:23.:00:32.

on holiday with her family in Jamaica. Former Egyptian President,

:00:32.:00:42.
:00:42.:00:44.

And it's Van Persie again, as Manchester United maintain their

:00:44.:00:54.
:00:54.:01:04.

lead at the top of the Premier Hello. About 1,000 people have

:01:04.:01:08.

attended a peace rally in Belfast n opposition to the continuing

:01:08.:01:11.

violence about the city council's decision to restrict the flying of

:01:11.:01:17.

the Union flag. It comes after 29 police officers were injured when

:01:17.:01:20.

nationalists clashed with loyalists returning from a demonstration last

:01:20.:01:23.

night. Northern Ireland's First Minister has insisted to the

:01:23.:01:28.

political process is the only way forward. Sinn Fein's President,

:01:28.:01:36.

Gerry Adams, says the council's decision must be respected.

:01:36.:01:40.

In one small corner of Belfast this morning, evidence of last night's

:01:40.:01:44.

rioting, including damaged houses in the Catholic Short Strand area.

:01:44.:01:49.

In the city centre, a peace rally outside Belfast City Hall. It was

:01:49.:01:54.

the council's decision last month to fly the Union flag here only on

:01:54.:01:58.

limited days each year which provoked an angry response from

:01:58.:02:02.

some loyalists. The resulting violence has dismayed these people.

:02:02.:02:06.

The majority of people in Northern Ireland think it is shameful.

:02:06.:02:10.

Hopefully, after today, people all over the UK will see that. I came

:02:10.:02:14.

along because we want to show the world it is not two communities, it

:02:14.:02:20.

is one community, with people who are causing trouble on the fringes.

:02:20.:02:24.

It is decimating the economy and tourism as well. I am here to show

:02:24.:02:30.

support for a peaceful solution. Yesterday's violence left more than

:02:30.:02:34.

two dozen police officers injured, as loyalists, who had been

:02:34.:02:38.

demonstrating at city hall, walked past the Short Strand. Both sides

:02:38.:02:42.

blame the other for starting it. Gerry Adams, in the Short Strand

:02:42.:02:46.

today, criticised the police for failing to anticipate what he

:02:46.:02:51.

claimed was deliberate violence. People should not think that the

:02:51.:02:56.

peace process is in jeopardy. It should never be taken for granted.

:02:56.:03:01.

It is irreversible. We will not let a small minority bring us back to

:03:01.:03:10.

the bad old days. The flag in Belfast City Council will not go up

:03:10.:03:14.

because somebody throws a petrol bomb at a policeman. The only way

:03:14.:03:16.

forward is through the political process. We are trying to encourage

:03:17.:03:23.

people to engage in that. Belfast city centre traders say

:03:23.:03:27.

business has suffered. Mainstream politicians are struggling to find

:03:28.:03:32.

the right response. Working class Protestants used to be among core

:03:32.:03:38.

supporters, but many are jobless thanks to the decline of heavy

:03:38.:03:46.

industry. They feel alienated by a process they say benefits Catholics

:03:46.:03:56.
:03:56.:03:56.

and deprives them of their British iddentiti. The DUP, they say, has

:03:56.:04:03.

defied them. The Anglo-Irish agreement. The no-campaign and now

:04:03.:04:08.

the people again - it's all change. Persuading disenchanted loyalists

:04:08.:04:11.

that the traditional parties do have something to offer them may

:04:11.:04:17.

prove a challenge. An eight-year-old British girl has

:04:17.:04:22.

been shot dead while on holiday in Jamaica. Imani Green, from South

:04:22.:04:28.

London, was in a shop in Duncans, a small town on the north coast when

:04:28.:04:32.

a man walked in and opened fire. The head teacher of her school

:04:32.:04:41.

described her as a happy, playful and popular girl.

:04:41.:04:45.

Green was staying in Jamaica with her family. She was shot and killed

:04:45.:04:50.

when a gunman approached a cafe owned by her cousin and opened fire.

:04:50.:04:58.

We heard the gunshot and we ran outside. We started to call Imani.

:04:58.:05:02.

I picked her up off the ground and I realised she was still breathing.

:05:02.:05:08.

I just flagged down one of the cars out there and they drove us to the

:05:08.:05:12.

hospital. Local police say the shooting may have been some kind of

:05:12.:05:16.

revenge attack. No-one has been arrested. It happened in Duncans, a

:05:16.:05:20.

town on the northern coast. It is described as a sleepy back-water.

:05:21.:05:25.

At her home in South London, neighbours said distraught family

:05:25.:05:29.

members had flown out to Jamaica. She attended this primary school

:05:29.:05:33.

nearby. In a statement, the school said that she was a happy and

:05:33.:05:38.

playful child, who was popular with staff and other pupils. It said she

:05:38.:05:41.

suffered from sickle cell anaemia and had been given special

:05:41.:05:44.

permission to travel to Jamaica to benefit from the warmer climate.

:05:44.:05:50.

The school says it is now in the process of contacting the families

:05:50.:05:54.

of other families in her year to tell them of her death and offer

:05:54.:06:00.

them any support they might need. Well, our reporter in Jamaica joins

:06:00.:06:04.

me from quite close to where that shooting happened. And Nick, what

:06:04.:06:10.

are the police saying about any progress in their investigation?

:06:10.:06:15.

The police are staying tight-lipped in response to any motive. Locally

:06:15.:06:21.

people are talking about it. Many don't want to give names, as such,

:06:21.:06:26.

because they are scared of reprisals. They say that something

:06:26.:06:30.

happened - there was a feud locally and a man was being hunted for by a

:06:30.:06:36.

gunman. He came in, didn't know who his target was and didn't want to

:06:36.:06:42.

leave anyone as a witness. Opened fire. As we know, he hit the little

:06:42.:06:46.

girl. Everything in that community are related. They are taking it

:06:47.:06:53.

very, very hard. Thank you. And a man has been charged here

:06:53.:06:58.

with murdering two Big Issue sellers in Birmingham. 32-year-old

:06:58.:07:02.

Wayne Lee Busst, seen here on the left and 31-year-old Ian Watson

:07:02.:07:08.

Gladwish were both killed in the city centre on Friday evening.

:07:08.:07:12.

An Egyptian court has ordered a retrial of the former President,

:07:12.:07:15.

Hosni Mubarak. He won an appeal against the life sentence imposed

:07:15.:07:19.

on him in June for failing to prevent the killing of hundreds of

:07:19.:07:28.

demonstrators during the revolts that forced him from power.

:07:28.:07:36.

It was the briefest of statements from the judge.

:07:36.:07:42.

It was one that led to rapture among Mubarak's supporters in the

:07:42.:07:47.

courthouse. The former President's appeal was

:07:47.:07:51.

accepted and his entire trial will be conducted all over again.

:07:51.:07:56.

TRANSLATION: Thanks to God, our President is innocent. On what

:07:56.:08:00.

justification are they jailing him? If that is the case, we might as

:08:00.:08:08.

well jail the Supreme Court of Armed Forces and mercy.

:08:08.:08:11.

TRANSLATION: There was nothing to prove he killed the protestors. It

:08:11.:08:16.

was the fact he did not kill them. Egyptians could hardly believe

:08:16.:08:20.

their eyes in 2011 when the man who looked untouchable for 30 years

:08:20.:08:25.

appeared in court. For his parts in the deaths of over 800 protestors

:08:25.:08:30.

during the uprising. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

:08:30.:08:34.

For the moment he is here - ill health meant a recent move from

:08:34.:08:38.

jail. More supporters gathered outside, some saying they were

:08:38.:08:44.

waiting to welcome his release. There is the potential a retrial

:08:44.:08:49.

could backfire. This woman certainly hopes so. Her son was

:08:49.:08:54.

shot dead by Mubarak's forces early on in the revolution, on his 26th

:08:54.:09:00.

birthday. I want his sons to be executed, she

:09:00.:09:06.

says, so he feels how we did when our children died. I want him to

:09:06.:09:09.

hang. God willing, that will be his sentence this time. There is the

:09:09.:09:13.

risk of a different outcome. This is still a country where

:09:13.:09:23.
:09:23.:09:39.

people feel they don't get justice. The company which is owned by

:09:39.:09:44.

yaind's Tata Group had a record year in 2012. Its plant already

:09:44.:09:51.

employs 6,000 people, producing the Range Rover Discovery and Defender

:09:51.:09:54.

models. Ed Miliband has warned the Prime Minister that it is the wrong

:09:54.:09:59.

time to call for a referendum on Britain's relationship with the EU.

:09:59.:10:03.

Members of Mr Cameron's party are pushing for him to bring back more

:10:03.:10:07.

powers from Brussels. Let's get more on this from our political

:10:08.:10:11.

correspondent at Westminster. More pressure on the Prime Minister then

:10:11.:10:14.

in advance of his speech about Europe? Yes. As you said, Ed

:10:14.:10:20.

Miliband is making it clear, he believes any talk of a referendum

:10:20.:10:24.

now is a distraction from economic problems. I think David Cameron

:10:24.:10:31.

will pay more attention to a group of Conservative MPs who will set

:10:31.:10:34.

out what powers they believe should be brought back to Britain from

:10:34.:10:38.

Brussels. Like David Cameron, these MPs don't want to leave the EU.

:10:38.:10:42.

There is a danger by setting out the powers they want to renegotiate.

:10:42.:10:45.

If he fails to do so, then I think the smaller number of Conservative

:10:45.:10:50.

MPs who want Britain to leave the EU entirely will be given a boost.

:10:50.:10:55.

It may be a gift to UKIP, who argue there is no middle way, you are

:10:55.:11:00.

either in or you are out. There are other European matters on the radar

:11:00.:11:03.

tonight as well. A few difficulties for the Communities Secretary?

:11:03.:11:08.

is right. A year from now, it will no longer be possible for the

:11:08.:11:15.

Government to limit the number of migrant workers. Mr Pickles asked

:11:15.:11:21.

if he can give us an estimate of how many would come. He said he did

:11:21.:11:29.

not want to trigger a scare story. He said new migrants would bring

:11:29.:11:35.

new pressures. Housing shortage - any influx from Romania and

:11:35.:11:39.

Bulgaria is going to cause problems. It will cause problems not just in

:11:39.:11:48.

terms of the housing market, but also on social housing. It is

:11:48.:11:51.

interesting that his reluctance to discuss the number of migrants who

:11:51.:11:54.

will come here highlights the feeling around Whitehall that

:11:54.:11:58.

issues around immigration should be marked, "Handle with care."

:11:58.:12:03.

Thank you. Six men have been arrested in

:12:03.:12:07.

northern India in connection with another case of gang rape. Police

:12:07.:12:12.

say a 29-year-old woman was abducted from a bus near the

:12:12.:12:16.

northern western city of Amritsar. The rape and murder of a 23-year-

:12:16.:12:22.

old woman in Delhi last month has caused a national outcry.

:12:22.:12:26.

An RAF transport plane has landed in France to help with the

:12:26.:12:30.

country's military operations in Mali. It is the first of two

:12:30.:12:34.

British aircraft which will transport troops and equipment to

:12:34.:12:38.

the state. France is engaged in fierce fighting against Al-Qaeda

:12:38.:12:43.

militants in the north of the country.

:12:43.:12:51.

Britain's involvement in the crisis in Mali began today. A C17 military

:12:51.:12:55.

transport plane flying to France to pick up equipment for French trooms

:12:55.:13:00.

fighting Islam -- troops fighting Islamist rebels. The Government

:13:00.:13:03.

here insisting this is part of a very limited mission.

:13:03.:13:10.

The Prime Minister has made very clear that we will be providing two

:13:10.:13:16.

C17 planes in a support role. He has made very clear that there'll

:13:16.:13:22.

be no combat troops on the ground at all. We have no plans to provide

:13:22.:13:25.

further assistance over and above that which has already been

:13:26.:13:31.

announced. But diplomats clearly felt they needed to respond

:13:31.:13:36.

urgently to France's request for support. Britain, France and other

:13:36.:13:40.

countries have been alarmed by recent advances by the Islamist

:13:40.:13:44.

rebels in Mali, moving from their strongholds in the north towards

:13:44.:13:51.

the capital, to take control of the whole country. The Islamist groups

:13:51.:13:56.

who control much of northern Mali have links with Al-Qaeda. Britain

:13:56.:14:04.

and France say they are a threat to international security. So now, the

:14:04.:14:08.

international community is intervening. France taking the lead,

:14:08.:14:13.

sending hundreds of troops to Mali to support the Government forces.

:14:13.:14:18.

French fighter aircraft are also in action, bombing rebel positions.

:14:18.:14:22.

The overall goal, to stop the Islamists taking control of the

:14:22.:14:29.

country. Let's catch up with all the day's

:14:29.:14:34.

sports news, which comes tonight from the Sports Centre. Thank you.

:14:34.:14:39.

It has been a dramatic afternoon in the Premier League with the two top

:14:39.:14:43.

sides, Manchester United and Manchester City in action. United

:14:43.:14:53.
:14:53.:14:53.

beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford. It is one of sport's spiciest

:14:53.:14:57.

rivalries. The last time Liverpool visiting Manchester United it was

:14:57.:15:00.

about Luis Suarez snubbing a handshake. This time though a

:15:00.:15:03.

different striker set about grabbing the headlines. Robin Van

:15:03.:15:08.

Persie has been A united star of the season. And this is why. He

:15:08.:15:12.

could have had even more to celebrate. His back heal scrambled

:15:12.:15:20.

off the line. After the break, United's dominance reaped rewards.

:15:20.:15:26.

Evra's header - game surely over. Not so. Liverpool's third new

:15:27.:15:30.

signing, Daniel Sturridge pounced and they were back in it. Sturridge

:15:30.:15:37.

might have snatched an equaliser. United weathered the storm.

:15:37.:15:44.

Obviously an important result for us. I think they were inspired with

:15:44.:15:48.

our goal. The supporters were given something to cheer on. They made a

:15:48.:15:53.

feast of it. So a good day for the red half of Manchester. A win which

:15:53.:15:57.

strengthens their position at the top of the table. Now it was up to

:15:57.:16:04.

their closest rivals to try and narrow the gap. Manchester City

:16:04.:16:08.

knew defeat would lead them ten points adrift.

:16:08.:16:12.

That never looked likely. Sure the resulting penalty somehow stayed

:16:12.:16:19.

out. Arsenal did not ride their luck for long. City's advantage

:16:19.:16:23.

hammered home by James Milner as the visitors took control it was 2-

:16:23.:16:30.

0 by the break. Edin Dzeko tapping home City home and dry. There was

:16:30.:16:36.

some late drama. The captain was sent off. A hefty blow for the

:16:36.:16:42.

visitors, but a bigger victory. Leicester drew 15-15 against

:16:42.:16:48.

Ospreys. That leaves them needing to beat Toulouse next weekend to

:16:48.:16:52.

guarantee qualification to the quarter-finals. Ospreys are out of

:16:52.:16:54.

the European competition as are Edinburgh, who were defeated by

:16:54.:17:03.

Munster. Rivalry is always intense.

:17:03.:17:09.

It just takes it up a notch. Ospreys needed a win to stay in the

:17:09.:17:12.

competition. Biggar couldn't have come closer,

:17:12.:17:16.

twice hitting the frame, as Leicester could not deal with the

:17:16.:17:21.

constant press shush. The Welsh side were rewarded for their super

:17:21.:17:28.

or ritty, with a try of real quality. The handling was as good

:17:28.:17:32.

in the stands. Leicester started to turn things

:17:32.:17:36.

around. Two late tries looked to have handed them the victory. They

:17:36.:17:42.

did not count on Walker. The 20- year-old used local knowledge to

:17:42.:17:46.

weave his way through the defence, before setting up a great finish.

:17:46.:17:50.

Biggar could have won the game, but his luck with the boot didn't

:17:50.:17:56.

change. Ospreys out, Leicester need to beat Toulouse next week to

:17:56.:18:00.

guarantee qualification. Edinburgh have blown cold in this competition,

:18:00.:18:04.

which was reflected in the small crowd against Munster. They saw

:18:04.:18:09.

them lose their fifth game in a row. It was not pretty or entertaining.

:18:09.:18:17.

It improved the two-times champion's chances of reaching the

:18:17.:18:24.

knock-out stages. Neil Robertson was forced to fight back, winning

:18:24.:18:27.

6-5 against Ding Junhui in the master's tournament in London.

:18:27.:18:32.

He won the deciding frame with a shot and a 90-break. Robertson is

:18:32.:18:38.

attempting to become the fourth player to win back to back Masters'

:18:38.:18:42.
