A hero's welcome for the French President in Mali but he warns the

:00:05.:00:12.

fight against Islamist militants is not yet over. Francois Hollande

:00:12.:00:16.

tells cheering crowds French troops will stay in the country as long as

:00:16.:00:22.

they're needed. Ahead of a vote on same-sex

:00:22.:00:25.

marriage, the Prime Minister comes under fire from his own MPs for

:00:25.:00:30.

ruling out immediate tax breaks for married couples.

:00:30.:00:33.

The college student stabbed to death and set on fire in an

:00:33.:00:37.

alleyway in Blackpool - a man's being questioned by police.

:00:37.:00:40.

And, in rugby England overpower Scotland to get their Six Nations

:00:40.:00:50.
:00:50.:01:03.

Good evening. The French President, Francois Hollande, has received a

:01:03.:01:06.

rapturous welcome in Timbuktu - six days after French troops helped

:01:06.:01:12.

recapture the northern Mali town from Islamist militants. But Mr

:01:12.:01:15.

Hollande warned that the battle was far from won and said French troops

:01:15.:01:17.

would remain until the West African country's sovereignty could be

:01:17.:01:24.

assured. Our Africa correspondent Andrew Harding has sent this report

:01:24.:01:32.

from Timbuktu. Quite a convoy for the French

:01:32.:01:38.

President arriving here in Timbuktu this morning. First stop, the

:01:38.:01:42.

ancient mosque. Local dignitaries lining up to thank the man whose

:01:42.:01:46.

army liberated their town from months of brutal occupation. Then

:01:46.:01:54.

it's the public's turn. Hollande, they shout, President

:01:54.:01:59.

Hollande is our hero. Just one week ago, no dancing was allowed here,

:01:59.:02:03.

no music. Islamist militants forced women to cover all but their eyes

:02:03.:02:11.

in black. Look at them now. Aren't I beautiful, asks this woman,

:02:11.:02:15.

before we had to do this, we are free, we are we are proud of France,

:02:15.:02:23.

she says. It's been an emotional day in this desert town. Mr

:02:23.:02:26.

Hollande plunging into the crowds. The war has been good for his

:02:26.:02:30.

ratings back home, but there are risks ahead, here in Mali. The

:02:30.:02:35.

French campaign here has been quick, successful and wildly popular but

:02:35.:02:39.

for President Hollande this could be as good as it gets. He now needs

:02:39.:02:45.

an exit strategy but if he moves too quick, misapbls it --

:02:45.:02:50.

mishandles it, Mali could be plunged back into chaos. Today, Mr

:02:50.:02:53.

Hollande tried to strike a balance. He told his troops their job was

:02:53.:02:56.

not yet done here, but he also urged Mali and its neighbours to

:02:56.:03:02.

step up and take a much bigger role. The Islamist militants have

:03:03.:03:06.

withdrawn, for now, but this remains a dangerously fragile

:03:06.:03:13.

nation. David Cameron's been criticised by

:03:13.:03:17.

some of his own MPs for ruling out tax breaks for married couples in

:03:17.:03:20.

the Budget next month. There were reports that the measure would be

:03:20.:03:22.

brought forward to placate backbenchers opposed to the

:03:22.:03:24.

introduction of same-sex marriage in England and Wales - which will

:03:24.:03:27.

be voted on next week. Our political correspondent Carole

:03:27.:03:31.

Walker has more. The Prime Minister believes

:03:31.:03:35.

marriage helps to bind families and communities together. But his plan

:03:35.:03:40.

to extend it to gay couples is proving hugely divisive for his

:03:40.:03:44.

party. Many opponents of the idea want him to do more to support

:03:44.:03:48.

traditional marriages and are disappointed a commitment in the

:03:48.:03:51.

coalition agreement to introduce tax breaks for married couples

:03:51.:03:55.

won't be delivered in the coming Budget. On Tuesday, when the vote

:03:55.:03:58.

comes forward for the redefinition of marriage, I would much rather be

:03:58.:04:03.

voting for a tax measure that put extra money in the pockets of those

:04:03.:04:09.

who need it most, rather than voting for something that wasn't in

:04:09.:04:12.

the manifesto, which is a redefinition of marriage. It's not

:04:12.:04:17.

the priority. The economy's the priority. Edmond Costello resigned

:04:17.:04:21.

as chairman of Somerset and Frome Conservatives over the gay marriage

:04:21.:04:25.

proposals last month and has warned others will follow suit. What, to

:04:25.:04:28.

me, has been proposed is something that the Conservative Party would

:04:28.:04:34.

never, ever have even considered in years gone by. And indeed, the

:04:34.:04:39.

feeling within the party at grass roots and amongst many MPs and

:04:39.:04:44.

officers, has not changed that opinion. They are very, very upset.

:04:44.:04:48.

Some in his party believe David Cameron's being swayed by another

:04:48.:04:52.

relationship, with his coalition partner. Nick Clegg opposes the

:04:52.:04:56.

idea of tax breaks for marriage, sources say the Prime Minister will

:04:56.:05:00.

deliver that pledge later in this parliament whilst this Budget will

:05:00.:05:03.

focus on promoting growth. The Prime Minister believes gay people

:05:03.:05:08.

should have the same rights as others to get married. If we can

:05:08.:05:11.

deliver a Bill which allows people who love each other of the same sex

:05:11.:05:14.

to get married, whilst protecting the freedoms of religious

:05:14.:05:17.

organisations, then that's a good thing to do and there's room in the

:05:17.:05:21.

timetable for it. When the legislation to allow gay couples to

:05:21.:05:25.

marry comes before parliament on Tuesday, David Cameron's likely to

:05:25.:05:29.

win the day with the support of most Labour and Liberal Democrat

:05:29.:05:33.

MPs. But dozens in his own party are poised to vote against the

:05:33.:05:40.

proposals or abstain. It is a free vote. So technically it won't be a

:05:40.:05:42.

rebellion but could further undermine David Cameron's authority

:05:43.:05:49.

over his party. Major food retailers and suppliers

:05:49.:05:51.

are being summoned to an urgent meeting this week after recent

:05:51.:05:55.

incidents of mislabelled or contaminated meat products. In the

:05:55.:05:57.

latest case, the Ministry of Justice said it was suspending a

:05:58.:06:03.

supplier after tests showed pork was found in halal prison food. As

:06:03.:06:05.

Richard Lister reports, the food standards watchdog is now

:06:05.:06:07.

investigating whether any of these products have been distributed

:06:07.:06:16.

elsewhere in the UK. It may not be haute cuisine but

:06:16.:06:20.

prison food is required to meet religious and cultural needs. About

:06:20.:06:24.

12% of prisoners are Muslims who don't eat pork for religious

:06:24.:06:28.

reasons. But tests revealed some halal products supplied to jails

:06:28.:06:33.

did, in fact, contain traces of meat meat from pigs. All prisons in

:06:33.:06:36.

England and Wales have now been told to destroy food stocks from

:06:36.:06:41.

the supplier involved. In a statement, the Justice Minister

:06:41.:06:51.
:06:51.:06:52.

Some prisons as well as schools, hospitals and care homes, are

:06:52.:06:58.

supplied by the 3666 Distribution Company which said it had withdrawn

:06:58.:07:02.

five halal products. The latest discovery comes less than three

:07:02.:07:07.

weeks after tests revealed horse meat in some supermarket

:07:07.:07:10.

beefburgers. The Food Standards Agency says it's up to meat

:07:10.:07:14.

retailers and suppliers to restore faith in their industry. Er consume

:07:14.:07:17.

confidence is at risk and we want the food industries together to

:07:17.:07:21.

step up to the mark on this and to make sure that they can take action,

:07:21.:07:24.

including some of the major retailers have already announced,

:07:24.:07:27.

further testing and routine testing of their products to make sure

:07:27.:07:31.

people can trust that what it says on the label is actually what's in

:07:32.:07:38.

the food. It's not clear whether any of the contaminated halal meat

:07:38.:07:42.

was sold in the high street. The FSA has promised a full report on

:07:42.:07:49.

where it came from and where it ended up.

:07:49.:07:52.

A postmortem examination on a 16- year-old girl who was murdered in

:07:52.:07:55.

Blackpool has found she died as a result of significant stab wounds.

:07:55.:07:58.

Sasha Marsden was found in an alleyway in the South Shore area on

:07:58.:08:04.

Thursday. Police are questioning a 22-year-old man. Ben Ando reports.

:08:04.:08:10.

The alarm was raised when flames were spotted in an allyway behind a

:08:10.:08:15.

row of hotels and guesthouses off the seafront. When residents put

:08:15.:08:20.

out the fire they realised they found a body and called the police.

:08:20.:08:24.

The victim was identified as 16- year-old Sasha Marsden, who was

:08:24.:08:30.

studying childcare at a local college. A specialist crime scene

:08:30.:08:33.

investigators continued their work at the scene, a postmortem

:08:33.:08:37.

investigation has revealed Sasha died of serious stab wounds to her

:08:37.:08:41.

head and face. Police said today that attempts were made to set the

:08:41.:08:45.

body on fire and this was after Sasha died. The results have been

:08:45.:08:48.

shared with the family. And specially trained officers are

:08:49.:08:53.

continuing to support them. Shortly after the body was found, a

:08:53.:08:58.

man aged 22 and a woman of 20 were arrested nearby. The woman has now

:08:58.:09:01.

been released without charge. Detectives have been given more

:09:02.:09:10.

time to question the man. Russia - a long-time ally of the

:09:10.:09:13.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - has, for the first time, held talks

:09:13.:09:16.

with the main Syrian opposition group. The meeting between Russia's

:09:16.:09:18.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Moaz al-Khatib, head of the

:09:18.:09:21.

National Coalition, took place on the sidelines of an international

:09:21.:09:27.

security conference in Munich. Russia says it now wants to stay in

:09:27.:09:32.

regular contact. 23 people - including ten civilians

:09:32.:09:35.

- have been killed in an attack on an army checkpoint in north-west

:09:35.:09:38.

Pakistan. The Pakistan Taliban have claimed responsibility for the

:09:38.:09:41.

attack, saying it was in response to a drone strike last month.

:09:42.:09:50.

Twelve attackers also died. A quarter of a million Twitter

:09:50.:09:53.

users have had their accounts hacked in the latest high-profile

:09:53.:09:55.

internet security breach. The social networking site is warning

:09:55.:09:57.

users that e-mail addresses and other information may have been

:09:57.:10:04.

accessed too. Here's our technology correspondent Rory Cellan Jones.

:10:05.:10:08.

Under cyber attack, some of the biggest names in the American media

:10:08.:10:12.

have been targeted by hackers and now Twitter, with a bigger audience

:10:12.:10:16.

than any of them, says it spotted attempts to breach its defences and

:10:16.:10:21.

get access to its users' personal information. Overnight, a quarter

:10:21.:10:26.

of a million users of the service were sent an e-mail selling --

:10:26.:10:31.

telling them their passwords needed to be changed. In a blog post

:10:31.:10:34.

Twitter said the hackers were sophisticated. This attack was not

:10:34.:10:39.

the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it is an isolated incident.

:10:39.:10:43.

This is what happened when I tried sign into my account this morning,

:10:43.:10:49.

an instruction to reset my password. Now this is only affected a tiny

:10:49.:10:52.

minority of 200 million active users. But the response of the

:10:52.:10:57.

company shows that it sees this as a very serious attack and part of a

:10:57.:11:00.

wider pattern. While the identity of the hackers

:11:00.:11:05.

behind the latest attacks is unclear there's been speculation

:11:05.:11:08.

that the New York Times was singled out because its journalists

:11:08.:11:13.

reported on corruption in China. With governments now engaged in

:11:13.:11:18.

cyber warfare it's far from an amateur affair. Hackers are really

:11:18.:11:21.

up in -- upping their game and companies need to step up to

:11:21.:11:24.

protect themselves because it's not just kids, it's not just people

:11:24.:11:29.

interested in making some money out of you, we are also seeing state-

:11:29.:11:32.

sponsored cyber crime, where other countries are interested in hacking

:11:32.:11:35.

in, maybe even to your business because of the information they

:11:35.:11:38.

might be able to steal. Twitter is emphasising that there's no

:11:38.:11:43.

evidence that the hackers have done real damage, but it's advising

:11:43.:11:48.

users to think about what it calls password hygiene, choosing

:11:48.:11:54.

carefully the codes that keep your online life life secure.

:11:54.:12:04.
:12:04.:12:07.

Time for sport now. Here is Olly Foster at the Sports Centre. U. The

:12:07.:12:12.

Six Nations Championship is up and running. England have retained the

:12:12.:12:15.

Calcutta Cup. They ran in four tries against Scotland, winning 38-

:12:15.:12:18.

18 at Twickenham. But there'll be no Grand Slam for Wales this year

:12:18.:12:21.

after they were beaten by Ireland 30-22 in Cardiff. Here's Joe Wilson.

:12:21.:12:24.

From champions in 2012, to where for Wales? The journey can be rapid

:12:24.:12:31.

from hero to zero. All it took for for Isle was -- Ireland was to get

:12:31.:12:36.

the ball to Zebe. He is already famous for fancy footwork. This was

:12:36.:12:41.

his crucial part in the build-up to Ireland's second try. By half-time

:12:41.:12:45.

they were ahead by 20 points. This may be the last Six Nations for

:12:45.:12:49.

Brian O'Driscoll. He remains of being the King in the right place

:12:49.:12:51.

at the right time. It meant Wales needed something extraordinary.

:12:51.:12:56.

There was a glimmer when they burst through in the second half. Nothing

:12:56.:13:03.

for it but to go for it. Throw the dice, throw the ball. Suddenly it

:13:04.:13:09.

was all Wales. Short-range lunge and try given. The lead down to

:13:09.:13:13.

just eight and that's where it finished. Wales took some pride in

:13:13.:13:18.

the fight but earned nothing in another defeat. We will never give

:13:18.:13:23.

up. A tough match, but we have to pick ourselves up and target some

:13:23.:13:27.

wins now. So to Twickenham where Scotland were trying to defy

:13:28.:13:33.

England and to defy history. Decades past between Scottish wins

:13:33.:13:39.

here and in the current era Scotland recently lost to Tonga but

:13:39.:13:48.

there is a new coach and new talent. England kept their flewency. Ashton

:13:48.:13:51.

squeezed over. England ahead by eight at half-time.

:13:51.:14:01.
:14:01.:14:05.

Here came an England debut, a man named Twelvetrees. England won by

:14:05.:14:08.

20 points in the end. They've enhanced their reputation by a

:14:08.:14:16.

considerable margin. The Women's Six Nations is also

:14:16.:14:20.

under way and England ran in 12 tries to beat Scotland 76-0 in

:14:20.:14:21.

Esher. Italy beat France 13-12 in the

:14:21.:14:26.

other match today. From tries to goals. Lots of late winners and

:14:26.:14:29.

equalisers on Match of the Day after the news tonight, but I've

:14:29.:14:32.

got the results coming up right now if you want to find out what

:14:32.:14:34.

happened in the eight Premier League games today.

:14:34.:14:37.

Manchester United are ten points clear at the top of the table after

:14:37.:14:40.

beating Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage. Wayne Rooney scored the

:14:40.:14:42.

only goal in the second half. Second-placed Manchester City play

:14:42.:14:48.

tomorrow. Bottom side QPR missed a penalty and drew 0-0 at home to

:14:48.:14:51.

Norwich. Arsenal beat Stoke 1-0. Marouane Fellaini scored an

:14:51.:14:53.

equaliser in the 90th minute for Everton against Aston Villa. Moosa

:14:53.:14:55.

Sissoko scored an injury-time winner for Newcastle against

:14:55.:14:58.

Chelsea. Jimmy Kebe scored both goals for Reading as they beat

:14:58.:15:00.

Sunderland. West Ham beat Swansea and Wigan got

:15:00.:15:05.

a last-minute equaliser against Southampton.

:15:05.:15:08.

Dundee United are into the quarter- finals of the Scottish Cup after

:15:08.:15:11.

beating Rangers 3-0 at Tannadice. Hundreds of Rangers fans boycotted

:15:11.:15:14.

the match in protest after Dundee United voted in favour of Rangers

:15:14.:15:16.

relegation to the Third Division following their liquidation last

:15:16.:15:20.

summer. This was their first trip to a Premier League side this

:15:20.:15:26.

season. Johnny Russell scored two of Dundee United's goals as they

:15:26.:15:29.

made it into the last eight. Rangers had two men sent off.

:15:29.:15:32.

Hamilton, Falkirk, Kilmarnock and St Mirren also made it through.

:15:32.:15:37.

That's all the sport tonight. Thank you very much.

:15:37.:15:40.

Finally, if you are looking for a beachfront property with great

:15:40.:15:44.

views and plenty of space you could still have time to put in a bid for

:15:44.:15:47.

Cleethorpes Pier. It went up for auction today, promising a

:15:47.:15:49.

nostalgic buyer the chance to purchase their own piece of seaside

:15:49.:15:57.

history. Andy Gill reports. This is not your crumbling pile of rusting

:15:57.:16:02.

Victorian ironwork. It is a rare chance to own a genuine slice of

:16:02.:16:07.

English seaside history. It's a good location. I would make it into

:16:07.:16:12.

a better restaurant, use it as a view and could attract weddings to

:16:12.:16:16.

it or make it more upper class, rather than a nightclub. It's part

:16:16.:16:23.

of the seaside. You know, like Blackpool. Perhaps the council

:16:23.:16:28.

might buy it, you never know. do what? Leave it as it is.

:16:28.:16:37.

pier opened on August bank holiday in 173, shall -- 1873. The

:16:37.:16:40.

auctioneer says three piers have come up for sale in the past couple

:16:40.:16:45.

of decades. The previous two piers that have been offered on the south

:16:45.:16:49.

coast have been derelict shells. combination of rich history and

:16:49.:16:53.

lots of modern publicity failed to produce a sale tonight. Generations

:16:53.:16:58.

of families who have walked on the pier hold their memories dear but

:16:59.:17:02.

the price of this pier proved too expensive for this generation of

:17:02.:17:09.
