:00:38.:00:48.
:00:48.:01:02.

streak with a another victory in Hello, a very good evening to you. A

:01:02.:01:07.

moderate conservative cleric has won Iran's presidential election.

:01:07.:01:11.

Hassan Rowhani secured a clear majority with just over 50% of the

:01:11.:01:14.

vote after promising Iranians greater personal freedom. Tonight,

:01:14.:01:18.

the Foreign Office called on Mr Rowhani to develop a more

:01:18.:01:26.

constructive relationship with the West over years of deadlock -- after

:01:26.:01:28.

years of deadlock over Iran's nuclear programme.

:01:28.:01:33.

People came out nervously at first, and then with greater confidence to

:01:33.:01:38.

celebrate an election which had turned into a referendum on Iran's

:01:38.:01:45.

political system. In the past, when a moderate president was elected,

:01:45.:01:49.

ultraconservative paramilitaries smashed up the celebrations. Not

:01:49.:01:52.

tonight. When the interior minister announced the results, it was pretty

:01:52.:02:01.

sensational. Hassan Rowhani had won outright, getting three times the

:02:01.:02:07.

number of votes of his Nereus conservative rival. And indeed, Mr

:02:07.:02:13.

Rowhani has played a blinder. He was selected because he persuaded the

:02:13.:02:17.

religious authorities that he was also a conservative. Then in the

:02:17.:02:21.

television debate he made some electrifying promises. Political

:02:21.:02:27.

prisoners must be released, he said, and the pressed -- press must be

:02:27.:02:34.

much freer. Above all, he said Iran must re-engage with the West. That

:02:34.:02:42.

gave him his result. It is utterly different from the last presidential

:02:42.:02:47.

election in 2009. Then, convinced they had been robbed of victory,

:02:47.:02:50.

moderate demonstrators paralysed the country for days. Until the police

:02:50.:02:56.

finally emptied the streets by their ferocious tactics. This time, the

:02:56.:03:02.

supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was much more careful.

:03:02.:03:07.

He did not back any of today's candidate so his own prestige was

:03:07.:03:12.

not on the line and he knows that he, and not the elected resident, is

:03:12.:03:17.

the one with the real power. Still, Mr Rowhani's election does represent

:03:17.:03:22.

an important change. If he delivers on what he said, then I think we can

:03:22.:03:27.

quite happily say that the last eight years when we have seen Iran

:03:27.:03:32.

in the grip of some very radical and extremist tendencies in the country

:03:32.:03:37.

is hopefully now coming to an end. But there is no doubt that large

:03:37.:03:39.

numbers of people in Iran are sick of the sanctions which have made

:03:39.:03:48.

them poor. And sick as well of being an extremist pariah state. They

:03:48.:03:51.

voted for normality. Whether they will get it is something very

:03:51.:03:55.

different. John joins me now. How much of a difference to you

:03:55.:04:02.

think this will make to the relationship with the West? I'm sad

:04:02.:04:06.

to say it is always wise to be really cautious way Tehran is

:04:06.:04:12.

concerned. I don't know if you remember that Jack straw held up the

:04:12.:04:19.

hand of friendship to Iran and the government 's bat on it effectively.

:04:19.:04:22.

Barack Obama was humiliated by suggesting it might be a good idea

:04:22.:04:28.

to change. But things are different now. I do think that the religious

:04:28.:04:33.

leadership, although they control all of these things, foreign affairs

:04:33.:04:36.

for instance, nuclear negotiations, there will not be huge amount of

:04:36.:04:41.

immediate change but there is altogether change in the air in

:04:41.:04:50.

Iran. I think ayatollahs Khamenei who is the top man in the country,

:04:50.:04:58.

and elected of course, by the people, but he must realise that it

:04:58.:05:04.

is dangerous to keep push, push, pushing all the time. I think he may

:05:04.:05:10.

well just ease up a little bit and let Hassan Rowhani have at any rate

:05:10.:05:17.

some of the things he has promised he will do. Thank you.

:05:17.:05:21.

Turkish police have stormed a park in the centre of Istanbul, firing

:05:21.:05:25.

water cannon and tear gas in a major operation to clear protesters from

:05:25.:05:30.

Gezi Park, which has been the centre of protesters -- protests in recent

:05:30.:05:40.
:05:40.:05:42.

weeks. James Reynolds's report contains flash photography.

:05:42.:05:48.

This is what the end of the occupation looks like. Tonight,

:05:48.:05:55.

Turkey's riot police raided Gezi Park. They took back the ground held

:05:55.:06:02.

by protesters for the last two macro weeks. Amid tear gas, we filmed the

:06:02.:06:10.

police advance. The police have moved in with tear gas and they are

:06:10.:06:18.

now instruct and everybody to leave the park at once. The protesters

:06:18.:06:24.

abandoned their campsite. Many decided it was too dangerous to stay

:06:24.:06:32.

and fight the police. We do not want this government, a dictator. We are

:06:32.:06:39.

Turkish, you know? Several streets from the park, the protesters

:06:39.:06:44.

pointed us to one injured man. They called for an ambulance. In the

:06:44.:06:54.
:06:54.:06:58.

distance, the police guarded the outskirts of Gezi Park. But that is

:06:58.:07:03.

not how Recep Tayyip Erdogan's supporters see it. Earlier today, in

:07:03.:07:09.

the capital, Ankara, Turkey's Prime Minister addressed the whole who had

:07:09.:07:14.

won three successive elections. My brothers and sisters who are still

:07:14.:07:22.

there, please leave. Taksim Square must be evacuated. Otherwise, this

:07:22.:07:32.
:07:32.:07:36.

country's security forces know how And that is exactly what happened.

:07:36.:07:41.

The Prime Minister have cleared the park. He has won back his ground.

:07:41.:07:50.

But it is not yet clear who has won the fight for the country's support.

:07:50.:07:54.

Here, the Prime Minister has said Britain has taken a positive step

:07:55.:08:03.

towards tanking -- clamping down on tax avoidance and tax evasion. David

:08:03.:08:09.

Cameron has asked the overseas territories to reveal details of

:08:09.:08:16.

their owners. If daylight is the best disinfectant, that is exactly

:08:16.:08:21.

what the Prime Minister wants to shine on what he calls the shadowy

:08:21.:08:23.

world of international business and finance.

:08:23.:08:28.

Hosting the summit with the so-called tax havens, David Cameron

:08:28.:08:35.

called for an end to hidden tax schemes. The way corrupt governments

:08:35.:08:39.

and corrupt companies paid rides is offered through shady companies

:08:39.:08:44.

where you cannot find out who owns what. That is why you need a system

:08:44.:08:51.

to find out who owns what company. And he can point to some progress.

:08:51.:08:58.

Today all the overseas Territories have agreed to be bound by an

:08:58.:09:04.

international summit on tax openness. But Mr Cameron is pushing

:09:04.:09:10.

for even more. At the moment it is unclear who controls or owns

:09:10.:09:15.

companies registered here. The company wants a central -- the

:09:15.:09:19.

government wants a central database which lists who the owner of each

:09:19.:09:24.

company is. It is hoped that transparency will cut down on tax

:09:24.:09:30.

avoiders and boost revenue. But the Prime Minister's plans may face

:09:30.:09:34.

problems. The BBC has spoken to senior officials from so-called tax

:09:34.:09:40.

havens who say they not work. They say the business community has not

:09:40.:09:44.

been consulted and it may push back on the proposals. Others also have

:09:44.:09:51.

concerns. Mr Cameron's idea is embryonic. There is still a lot of

:09:52.:09:56.

work to do. I understand Mr Cameron's plan is just for companies

:09:56.:10:00.

and not for trusts which still leaves a gap in awareness of the

:10:00.:10:06.

beneficial owner of many of the financial entities in the UK.

:10:06.:10:09.

all eyes turned to Northern Ireland. Today there were protests ahead of

:10:09.:10:15.

the G8 which meets there on Monday. Mr Cameron hopes securing more

:10:15.:10:20.

support for openness will help him persuade fellow G8 members to agree

:10:20.:10:26.

on a wider scheme to tackle offshore secrecy. More than 30 people have

:10:26.:10:30.

been rescued or forced to swim to safety when an amphibious tour bus

:10:30.:10:33.

sank in Liverpool's Albert Dock this afternoon.

:10:33.:10:37.

Several people were taken to hospital for treatment, mostly for

:10:37.:10:41.

shock horror but all have been discharged now. It is the second

:10:41.:10:45.

time in three months that one of the yellow vehicles has sunk. A plane

:10:45.:10:49.

travelling between Egypt and the United States has made an emergency

:10:49.:10:53.

landing at Glasgow Prestwick Airport after a passenger found a note on

:10:53.:10:58.

board threatening to set the plane alight.

:10:58.:11:02.

All passengers have been escorted safely off the plane. The Duchess of

:11:02.:11:06.

Cambridge has made her final public appearance before the birth of her

:11:06.:11:11.

baby, celebrating the Queen's official birthday today at the

:11:11.:11:13.

Trooping the Colour parade. The Duke of Edinburgh did not

:11:13.:11:23.

attend. He is still recovering from surgery at a London hospital.

:11:23.:11:29.

Nicholas Witchel reports. A birthday parade without her husband.

:11:29.:11:34.

For only the third time during her reign, the Queen attended Trooping

:11:34.:11:38.

the Colour unattended by the Duke of Edinburgh. His previous absences had

:11:38.:11:43.

been during the 1960s when he was abroad. The birthday parade is an

:11:43.:11:46.

occasion when the entire Royal family gathers. The Duchess of

:11:46.:11:51.

Cambridge travelled to Horse Guards Parade in an open carriage with the

:11:51.:11:55.

Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry. It is the last time Kate is

:11:55.:11:58.

expected to be seen in public before she goes into hospital in the next

:11:58.:12:06.

few weeks to give birth. On horse guards, the Queen was joined on the

:12:06.:12:11.

saluting base by her cousin the Duke of Kent. Prince William and Prince

:12:11.:12:16.

Charles watched on horseback. They saw the colour of the first

:12:16.:12:18.

Battalion Welsh Guards being trooped. Three of the regiment's

:12:18.:12:28.
:12:28.:12:33.

soldiers have been lost in other members of the Royal family

:12:33.:12:43.
:12:43.:12:45.

made their way back to Buckingham Palace by carriage. A 41 gun salute

:12:45.:12:49.

was fired in Green Park and the Queen led her family out onto the

:12:49.:12:54.

palace balcony to watch a fly past by the RAF. A balcony appearance is

:12:54.:12:59.

very much a traditional part of the Royal family's annual routine. It is

:12:59.:13:04.

also a chance to see how very gradually the family is changing.

:13:04.:13:09.

This was the year when the family group was notable for the figure who

:13:09.:13:13.

was not at the Queen's side and for the mother-to-be who is preparing to

:13:14.:13:19.

give birth to a baby who will be third in line for the throne. Today,

:13:19.:13:23.

the family's immediate thoughts were with the absent Duke of Edinburgh.

:13:23.:13:27.

This afternoon, the Queen visited him in hospital. As far as we are

:13:27.:13:35.

aware, the Duke continues to make satisfactory progress.

:13:35.:13:45.
:13:45.:13:48.

Now the sport for today. Thank you, Kate. Good evening. The

:13:48.:13:51.

British and Irish Lions won their penultimate warm up game before the

:13:51.:13:54.

first Test against Australia with an emphatic 47 points to 17 victory

:13:54.:13:57.

over the New South Wales Warratahs. But the victory has again come at a

:13:57.:14:06.

cost with another injury concern. The lines found themselves in

:14:06.:14:09.

unfamiliar territory today receiving instruction from their Australian

:14:09.:14:15.

hosts. -- the Lions. But their team-mates were about to face a

:14:15.:14:20.

different kind of physical challenge. Besides selected to take

:14:20.:14:30.
:14:30.:14:48.

player in Leigh Halfpenny. In a game of ferocious intensity, temperatures

:14:48.:14:54.

briefly flared. The tourists had been accused of sharp raptors in the

:14:54.:15:00.

build-up to this game. Today, they were simply sharp. The only

:15:00.:15:07.

negative, worrying injury to Jamie Roberts. But the Lions have another

:15:07.:15:15.

outstanding player capable of stepping in. With their unbeaten run

:15:15.:15:21.

continuing, it seems the Lions are ready. There is confidence in the

:15:21.:15:25.

squad. We have a good understanding of what we want to do and achieve

:15:25.:15:32.

and we have to make sure we keep our eye on the prize. One more warmup

:15:32.:15:35.

match has to be negotiated but this was perfect preparation for the

:15:35.:15:43.

Lions. This was a statement of intent which will surely have the

:15:43.:15:48.

Wallabies worried. As the Lions injury concerns

:15:48.:15:51.

continue, England's Christian Wade and Brad Barritt have been called up

:15:51.:15:58.

to the squad. They will arrive in Australia on Monday. Wade will be

:15:58.:16:08.
:16:08.:16:10.

flying from Argentina where he's left the England squad. They beat

:16:10.:16:13.

Argentina this evening 44-19. Wales lost to Japan for the first time.

:16:13.:16:18.

23-18 the score. And Scotland had a 17-6 lead over South Africa but lost

:16:18.:16:21.

that match 30 points to 17. Top seed Andy Murray is through to

:16:21.:16:24.

the final of the AeGon Championships at the Queen's Club in London after

:16:24.:16:34.
:16:34.:16:35.

beating France's Jo Wilfred-Tsonga in the semi-finals.

:16:35.:16:41.

England's Luke Donald is now top of the leaderboard at the U.S. Open.

:16:41.:16:50.

Justin Rose and Ian Poulter are third.

:16:50.:16:53.

And Neymar scored a stunning goal in Brazil's 3-nil win over Japan in the

:16:53.:16:57.

Confederations Cup and you can see just how good it was on Match of the

:16:57.:16:59.

Day in a few minutes here on BBC One.

:16:59.:17:09.
:17:09.:17:13.

That is all from the BBC newsroom. gusty winds is the forecast for

:17:14.:17:21.

today. Both are calming down. It is shaping up to be a pretty good day.

:17:21.:17:26.

Wright and sunny spells. The winds will be much lighter. Some lively

:17:26.:17:36.
:17:36.:17:37.

guff is along the south coast at the moment. -- gusts. Most towns and

:17:37.:17:44.

cities will stay in double digits overnight. There is some rain

:17:44.:17:47.

gathering to the south-west. It will stutter and stumble by tomorrow. It

:17:47.:17:52.

could bring rain to Devon and Cornwall. For most places, I think

:17:52.:17:57.

it will be dry. One or two scattered showers developing across northern

:17:57.:18:01.

Britain for the afternoon. Not a lot of sunshine for Devon and Cornwall.

:18:02.:18:05.

We will see some outbreaks of drizzle perhaps infringing into

:18:05.:18:12.

South Wales. The threat of rain across the south-east of England as

:18:12.:18:17.

well. Most places will be dry. With a bit of sunshine poking through and

:18:17.:18:22.
