One of Scotland's most senior Catholics, the Bishop of Aberdeen,

has apologised amid claims of sexual and physical abuse by monks at a

former boarding school in the Highlands. A BBC investigation,

broadcast on Monday, uncovered evidence of physical violence and

sexual assault by monks at the Fort Augustus Abbey School and its feeder

school. Both schools have since closed. The cases of abuse are now

being investigated by the police. This report from James Shaw.

Fort Augustus Abbey School in the Highlands, until the early '90s,

when it closed, a prestigious Catholic boarding school, run by

Benedictine monks. But for allegations dating back to the 1950s

of physical and sexual abuse by monks, finally brought to light last

week by a BBC Scotland investigation. Five many say they

were raped or sexually abused by one priest. In total, more than 20

former pupils have made allegations against at least ten monks. .

at night. Now Bishop hue Gilbert has told a Scottish newspaper he wants

to apologise for what happened -- Hugh bill Gilbert. He said "I share

the horror and shame. I'm afraid people do horrible things, these

things do happen it is a horrible tale of broken trust and integrity."

He said it was appropriate to say sorry for hurt. For the victims it

may be the start of a process of healing after years of not being

believed. Some of their allegations are already being investigated by

the police. This scandal comes after the resignation of the leader of the

Church in Scotland following allegations of inappropriate sexual

behaviour towards priests. During mass today, Bishop Gilbert said

there was a fundamental need for spiritual renewal in the Church.

A consultation will begin tomorrow, into controversial plans to

introduce a childcare voucher system. Under the scheme, families

with two working parents, earning less than �150,000 each, will be

able to claim back to up �1,200 a year per child. Government says

it'll benefit 2. 5 million working families but critics say it'll

penalise stay at home parents. In Iran, the public inauguration of

cleric roou roou roou is under way. -- -- Cleric Hassan Rouhani. He won

the poll in June promising to put an end to the country's international

isolation and to run the economy. He replaces Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. More

than 20,000 cyclists in one of the biggest events of its kind in the

world are taking place in a 100 mile race in and around the capital.

early this morning from the Olympic Park in Stratford. The cyclists will

go through Surrey, in a route similar to last year's Olympic

event. It was a nail biting start to the Ashes this morning as England's

south-west of the country and also some sunny spells and showers across

the far north of the UK. You can see whether France pushing in from the

south-west, which has been bringing very wet weather to the south. To

the south-east, it is largely dry and fine. There will be sunshine,

temperatures into the mid-20s. It will be continuing to be wet in the

South West, particularly Devon and Cornwall. For Northern England, it

will happen as well. Scotland has not been bad, the wind has been

lighter, which has been good news for the women's golf. Some showers

around and temperatures close to 20 Celsius. Into this evening and

overnight we see the next pulse of heavy rain spreading up from the

south-west, already affecting areas which have seen a lot of rain,

moving north into the Midlands, becoming widespread across much of

England and Wales. Western Scotland and Northern Ireland should remain

dry. It will be mild and muddy tonight. Monday morning, you can see

the tangle of weather fronts across a good portion of England and Wales,

bringing further rain. A rather wet start. Some of that rain will come

into the south-east, which might start drying. For western Scotland

and Northern Ireland, are largely dry day, eventually turning dry air

across the extreme west of Wales. The rain is transferring eastwards.

Relatively warm in the South East. For Monday evening, as the rain

pushes East, we will see some brightness coming towards Wales and

western England. For the rest of this week, it is not looking too

bad. We will see a fair amount of sunshine throughout the week. Some

showers could be heavy and thundery and it will feel quite warm across

central and eastern areas. There is a troublesome low-pressure area,

which will bring some rain. There is high pressure coming from the

south-west. Tuesday will be fine and dry. Variable amounts of cloud, some

sunny spells and showers across western Scotland, Northern Ireland,

perhaps getting into north-west England. Then we see this area of

low pressure across the continent pushing up towards the course of

Wednesday. It threatens to bring some thundery rain towards the

south-east, but another largely fine day with spells of sunshine. Some

showers across the northern half of the UK, they could be slow-moving

and heavy. Temperatures of around 21 degrees. On Wednesday, that thundery

low-pressure pushes north into Scandinavia, and we will be trapped

between two areas of low pressure. It will be a fine day with light

wind. Sunshine across the country. There will be a risk of some showers

in northern and western areas. These could be heavy and thundery.

Temperatures will be close to the low to mid 20s. On Thursday, low
