Heightened security in Pakistan as the Taliban vows to take revenge for | :00:00. | :00:20.
the death of their leader. Hakimulla Mehsud was killed by a US drone | :00:21. | :00:23.
strike, sparking fury from Pakistan's government. The | :00:24. | :00:28.
government of Pakistan does not see this drone attack as an attack on an | :00:29. | :00:32.
individual, but as an attack on the peace process. Specialist officers | :00:33. | :00:37.
are called in to end a prison disturbance at Maidstone jail. | :00:38. | :00:40.
Charged with murder, the daughter and son-in-law of an elderly couple | :00:41. | :00:43.
found buried in a garden in Mansfield. Ben Youngs, to Farrell. | :00:44. | :01:00.
And it's a tale of two halves as England come back to beat Australia | :01:01. | :01:13.
at Twickenham. Good evening. The Taliban in | :01:14. | :01:20.
Pakistan has vowed to take revenge for the killing of their leader, | :01:21. | :01:24.
Hakimulla Mehsud. He was targeted yesterday in a suspected US drone | :01:25. | :01:29.
strike. Security forces have been put on high alert and Pakistan's | :01:30. | :01:32.
government has condemned the attack, saying it has destroyed their | :01:33. | :01:35.
attempts to hold peace talks with the militants. Mehsud was killed in | :01:36. | :01:38.
north-western Pakistan, near the Afghan border. From Islamabad, | :01:39. | :01:46.
Richard Galpin has sent this report. The security forces in the capital | :01:47. | :01:50.
and across the country, now on high alert. This is following threats | :01:51. | :01:56.
from the Pakistan Taliban it will launch suicide bombings in | :01:57. | :01:59.
retaliation for the killing of its leader. In these rare pictures of | :02:00. | :02:07.
Hakimullah Mehsud, he fills around with fellow fighters. Rest and | :02:08. | :02:12.
recuperation for a man responsible for hundreds of attacks across | :02:13. | :02:16.
Pakistan, including the shooting of a schoolgirl. In a BBC interview | :02:17. | :02:20.
filmed just weeks before his death, he didn't did the late -- he did | :02:21. | :02:26.
indicate he was potentially interested in peace talks with the | :02:27. | :02:31.
government. We believe in discussions but the government has | :02:32. | :02:36.
taken no serious steps to use -- to support us. The news of his death | :02:37. | :02:41.
may be welcomed by many here who have seen the suffering he has | :02:42. | :02:45.
caused. But there is also anger he was killed just as hope was rising. | :02:46. | :02:56.
Perhaps most angry as this man, the interior minister who was leading | :02:57. | :03:00.
the government's efforts to draw the Pakistan Taliban into peace talks. | :03:01. | :03:06.
First and foremost, the government of Pakistan does not see this drone | :03:07. | :03:09.
attack as an attack on an individual, but as an attack on the | :03:10. | :03:19.
peace process. This is the scale of the violence the people of Pakistan | :03:20. | :03:27.
have been facing as the Taliban's Stewart -- as the Taliban have | :03:28. | :03:30.
pursued a relentless campaign, killing and injuring thousands. The | :03:31. | :03:35.
government believes that peace talks are the best way to stop the | :03:36. | :03:40.
bloodshed. But now the government says the Americans have ruined the | :03:41. | :03:45.
chances of those talks taking place. Today it summoned the US ambassador | :03:46. | :03:50.
to protest. The government is even considering the possibility of | :03:51. | :03:53.
blocking the routes through Pakistan used by NATO to send fuel and other | :03:54. | :03:58.
goods to its forces inside neighbouring Afghanistan. This is | :03:59. | :04:03.
one of the men now being discussed by the Pakistan Taliban as a | :04:04. | :04:06.
potential new leader. Khan Said Sajna. He is thought to be less | :04:07. | :04:12.
hardline than Hakimullah Mehsud. But the death of Hakimullah Mehsud is a | :04:13. | :04:19.
take all -- but the death of Hakimullah Mehsud is a big blow for | :04:20. | :04:23.
the militant movement. Right now they are unlikely to be talking | :04:24. | :04:27.
about peace. Hakimulla Mehsud was set to be a key | :04:28. | :04:31.
player in the peace talks between the Pakistani Taliban and the | :04:32. | :04:33.
government. Our world affairs correspondent, Rajesh Mirchandani, | :04:34. | :04:35.
assesses what his death means for those talks and the already fragile | :04:36. | :04:38.
relationship between Pakistan and the US. | :04:39. | :04:46.
To the Taliban, he was a hero, to the Americans wanted terrorist. | :04:47. | :04:51.
Pakistanis may be glad he is dead but have they lost potential | :04:52. | :04:59.
peacemaker? One day before Pakistan in -- Pakistani officials were to | :05:00. | :05:02.
meet, I'd US drone strike killed Hakimullah Mehsud. Did it also kill | :05:03. | :05:07.
any hopes for peace? The peace talks, in order to bring some sort | :05:08. | :05:14.
of stability to the tribal areas of Pakistan, are crucial. Since 9/ | :05:15. | :05:22.
50,000 Pakistanis have died, mainly in fighting the militants in the | :05:23. | :05:27.
tribal areas. Pakistan is desperate to have peace in its territories. -- | :05:28. | :05:37.
since 9/11. The Pakistanis are angry about how Hakimullah Mehsud was | :05:38. | :05:40.
killed. Four years America refused to even admit that it was using | :05:41. | :05:46.
drones to target its enemies. It has carried out hundreds of strikes in | :05:47. | :05:50.
Pakistan's tribal areas with unmanned aircraft. It is a tactic | :05:51. | :05:54.
that has eliminated some key figures. In 2004, a missile fired | :05:55. | :06:02.
from a drone killed this man. In 2009, Baitullah Mehsud was killed. | :06:03. | :06:13.
And this year, Waliur Rehman was killed in a drone strike. Behind the | :06:14. | :06:19.
smiles in Washington last week, ongoing tensions between the | :06:20. | :06:28.
countries' leaders. Pakistan says America does not respect its | :06:29. | :06:32.
territorial sovereignty. In a troubled region, this is a difficult | :06:33. | :06:37.
and vital relationship. Analysts think it must and will survive the | :06:38. | :06:40.
latest killing of the Taliban leader. The US government does not | :06:41. | :06:45.
want to destabilise the civilian government in Pakistan. The | :06:46. | :06:50.
Pakistani government needs to make sure that the problems in | :06:51. | :06:55.
Afghanistan do not spill over. What will follow this man's death? Peace | :06:56. | :07:02.
or more violence? The American scene negotiations with the Taliban is an | :07:03. | :07:07.
internal matter for Pakistan. -- the Americans say. | :07:08. | :07:13.
The prison service says a disturbance at Maidstone jail in | :07:14. | :07:15.
Kent has been resolved without injury or damage. Specialist | :07:16. | :07:18.
officers were called in to deal with the incident, which involved 40 | :07:19. | :07:22.
inmates. A spokesman for the Prison Officers Association said the | :07:23. | :07:25.
trouble followed changes which have resulted in prisoners having to | :07:26. | :07:28.
spend more time in their cells. Philippa Young reports. | :07:29. | :07:34.
Specially trained prison riot officers were deployed to the jail, | :07:35. | :07:38.
along with local police, fire and ambulance crews. The incident was | :07:39. | :07:42.
contained in one wing which is separated from the others. Maidstone | :07:43. | :07:48.
is a category C men's jail with 600 inmates, are dominantly sex | :07:49. | :07:53.
offenders, but it also takes in a number of foreign nationals with | :07:54. | :07:56.
more than 18 months left to serve under sentence. The landlady who | :07:57. | :08:01.
runs the pub across the road from the prison said she could hear the | :08:02. | :08:06.
disturbance. At 5:15pm, I could hear shouting. I thought it was outside | :08:07. | :08:13.
because it was quite loud. I went to the window and heard it was coming | :08:14. | :08:18.
from the prison. You could hear the prisoners in this blog shouting, | :08:19. | :08:23.
what is going on? They were trying to find out, obviously they had been | :08:24. | :08:28.
locked into their cells. It was like a football crowd. The incident began | :08:29. | :08:35.
around four o'clock this afternoon. It was in one wing and it involved | :08:36. | :08:40.
40 prisoners. The right response plan was put into action. By | :08:41. | :08:47.
6:30pm, the incident was declared over. The prison service said that | :08:48. | :08:52.
no staff or inmates were injured. It is extremely rare. It does not | :08:53. | :08:58.
happen often. Incidents have been on the increase of late and there has | :08:59. | :09:03.
been concern around the service. This is a reflection of this | :09:04. | :09:05.
territory and the cuts being made in the prison service. The Justice | :09:06. | :09:10.
Secretary has said he wants to bring down the cost of prison, his | :09:11. | :09:17.
philosophy, getting more for less. The Prison Officers Association is | :09:18. | :09:21.
blaming spending cuts. Staff cuts mean prisoners spend more time | :09:22. | :09:26.
locked in their cells. At that has set -- at a separate incident in | :09:27. | :09:30.
Warwickshire, around 60 inmates refused to return to their cells. | :09:31. | :09:35.
That has been resolved peacefully. In Maidstone, an investigation is | :09:36. | :09:40.
underway. The prison service has said that those involved will be | :09:41. | :09:45.
dealt with appropriately. Two people have been remanded in | :09:46. | :09:48.
custody after appearing before magistrates in Sheffield charged | :09:49. | :09:51.
with the murder of a Sri Lankan graduate. Thavisha Lakindu Peiris, | :09:52. | :09:56.
who was 25, was stabbed to death during his final shift before | :09:57. | :09:59.
starting a new job as an IT consultant. Shamraze Khan, who is | :10:00. | :10:02.
25, and a 17-year-old boy were remanded in custody to appear before | :10:03. | :10:05.
Sheffield Crown Court later this month. | :10:06. | :10:07.
The daughter and son-in-law of an elderly couple whose remains were | :10:08. | :10:11.
found buried in their back garden in Mansfield three weeks ago have | :10:12. | :10:14.
appeared in court charged with their murders. Susan and Christopher | :10:15. | :10:16.
Edwards were arrested in London on Wednesday. William and Patricia | :10:17. | :10:18.
Wycherley disappeared in 1998. They'd been shot dead. From | :10:19. | :10:26.
Mansfield, Ben Ando reports. Standing side-by-side and flanked by | :10:27. | :10:29.
court guards, fifth and five-year-old Susan Edwards and her | :10:30. | :10:34.
husband, Christopher, 57, are charged jointly with murdering her | :10:35. | :10:36.
parents, William and Patricia Wycherley. During a short hearing | :10:37. | :10:42.
they spoke only to confirm their names and ages and that they | :10:43. | :10:47.
understood the charges. They were arrested on suspicion of murder at | :10:48. | :10:50.
St Pancras railway station on Wednesday. It was exactly three | :10:51. | :10:56.
weeks after police unearthed the bodies of a man and woman bedded in | :10:57. | :11:01.
shallow graves at this addressed in Nottinghamshire. The bodies are | :11:02. | :11:06.
believed to be those of William and Patricia Wycherley. Postmortem test | :11:07. | :11:10.
revealed that both had been shot dead. William and Patricia Wycherley | :11:11. | :11:17.
had him described as private, even reclusive. When they disappeared | :11:18. | :11:21.
from their home 15 years ago, many people assumed that they had moved | :11:22. | :11:26.
away. Their daughter and son-in-law have been reminded in custody and it | :11:27. | :11:29.
will appear again before a Crown Court judge on Monday. -- and they | :11:30. | :11:41.
will appear again. Campaigners seeking the release of a | :11:42. | :11:43.
freelance British journalist detained along with Greenpeace | :11:44. | :11:45.
activists in Russia have been staging a silent protest outside the | :11:46. | :11:48.
Russian embassy in London. Kieron Bryan was one of 30 people arrested | :11:49. | :11:52.
in September by the Russian security forces during a protest against oil | :11:53. | :11:55.
drilling in the Arctic. Strong winds have brought down | :11:56. | :11:58.
electricity lines in South and West Wales, causing power cuts across the | :11:59. | :12:03.
region. Gusts of up to 80mph have damaged buildings and uprooted | :12:04. | :12:06.
trees, and a section of the M4 was closed earlier today when a caravan | :12:07. | :12:09.
overturned. It's been a busy day of sport. Let's | :12:10. | :12:13.
join Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes at the BBC Sport Centre. | :12:14. | :12:19.
Thanks very much, Matthew. Good evening. England celebrated their | :12:20. | :12:23.
ten-year anniversary of winning the Rugby Union World Cup today by | :12:24. | :12:25.
beating Australia again, this time at Twickenham on the opening day of | :12:26. | :12:29.
the autumn internationals. They had to come from behind, though, | :12:30. | :12:32.
eventually winning by 20 points to 13. Patrick Geary reports. | :12:33. | :12:35.
English rugby spent ten years trying to restart a party at left in | :12:36. | :12:41.
Sydney. The men who lifted the World Cup in 2003 were back today, | :12:42. | :12:46.
helpless onlookers, a bit like the current crop when faced with the | :12:47. | :12:50.
likes of this. Australia went in front with the first try of the | :12:51. | :12:55.
game. Their lead was reinforced. The Australians were ahead by seven | :12:56. | :13:01.
points at the break. Taking photos is fine, but the key for England was | :13:02. | :13:07.
taking chances. Into the second half and a ricochet went their way. Chris | :13:08. | :13:13.
Robshaw did the rest. The water tight Australian defence admit | :13:14. | :13:17.
parted again. Owen Farrell picked out the channel and dived into it. | :13:18. | :13:21.
The opposition attempts to reduce the deficit if did. They fell short, | :13:22. | :13:28.
just as they had against the Lions. For England, there is more work to | :13:29. | :13:30.
do. Well, at the Rugby League World Cup, | :13:31. | :13:33.
England put last week's disappointing defeat to Australia | :13:34. | :13:36.
behind them to easily beat Ireland this afternoon. The tournament | :13:37. | :13:42.
co-hosts scored eight tries in the 42-0 victory in Huddersfield. Tim | :13:43. | :13:47.
Hague has the details. It is the price we all want, but to | :13:48. | :13:52.
get closer to it, England needed their first win of the World Cup and | :13:53. | :13:56.
against Ireland, memories of last week's defeat were soon forgotten. | :13:57. | :14:03.
112 seconds gone when Ryan Hall scored the game's first try. It was | :14:04. | :14:08.
not long to wait for a second, in the same corner from the same score. | :14:09. | :14:14.
Tom Briscoe scored two more before a relentless first 20 minutes was | :14:15. | :14:16.
completed with the fifth England try. They are putting a sword | :14:17. | :14:24.
through this Irish team. The sword kept slicing. Two more tries | :14:25. | :14:30.
followed. Kallum Watkins was the grateful recipient. This was the | :14:31. | :14:36.
cherry on a convincing victory. Rangi Chase beg the opposition to | :14:37. | :14:52.
the punch. -- bet the opposition. There is plenty to ponder after a | :14:53. | :14:55.
performance like this. There were plenty of goals in the | :14:56. | :14:58.
Barclays Premier League today. Match Of The Day follows the news on BBC | :14:59. | :15:02.
One, so if you don't want to know who scored them, please divert your | :15:03. | :15:05.
attention for a little while. Arsenal are five points clear at the | :15:06. | :15:09.
top of the table after a 2-0 win over third-placed Liverpool. Santi | :15:10. | :15:12.
Cazorla scored the first, with Aaron Ramsey adding a spectacular second. | :15:13. | :15:15.
Champions Manchester United beat Fulham for their first back-to-back | :15:16. | :15:16.
league victories under David Moyes. Cazorla scored the first, with | :15:17. | :15:21.
Manchester City moved up to fourth after a 7-0 thrashing of Norwich. | :15:22. | :15:24.
Chelsea missed the chance to close the gap on Arsenal, losing away at | :15:25. | :15:28.
Newcastle. And Crystal Palace stay rooted to the bottom of the table | :15:29. | :15:33.
after a defeat at West Brom. Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic | :15:34. | :15:36.
had to come from behind to rescue a point with a 1-1 draw against Dundee | :15:37. | :15:39.
United. St Mirren against Ross County had to be abandoned just | :15:40. | :15:42.
after half-time because of heavy rain. Elsewhere, there were wins for | :15:43. | :15:45.
St Johnstone and Inverness. British cyclist Joanna Rowsell has | :15:46. | :15:48.
won her second gold medal at the Track World Cup in Manchester. One | :15:49. | :15:52.
of the golden girls from London 2012, Rowsell added the 3km | :15:53. | :15:55.
individual pursuit title to the team pursuit gold she won yesterday. And | :15:56. | :16:04.
Mark Webber pipped his four-time world championship-winning team mate | :16:05. | :16:06.
Sebastien Vettel to pole position for tomorrow's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. | :16:07. | :16:10.
And that's the sport. Back to you, Matthew. | :16:11. | :16:12.
A reminder of tonight's main story: Pakistan has accused the United | :16:13. | :16:14.
States of "ambushing" peace talks with the Taliban by killing the | :16:15. | :16:18.
leader of the militant group in a drone strike. You can see more on | :16:19. | :16:21.
that and all of today's other stories on the BBC News Channel. | :16:22. | :16:36.
Good evening. Yet again, strong winds have been causing problems | :16:37. | :16:42.
today. It has been a stormy Saturday afternoon in South Wales. The winds | :16:43. | :16:48.
will ease overnight, but it will still be blustery, with plenty of | :16:49. | :16:53.
showers tomorrow morning. For the next few hours, it will still be | :16:54. | :16:58.
blustery. There is still the risk of gusts of 40 mph, possibly 60 mph in | :16:59. | :17:05.
places. It will be wet in the West of Scotland as temperatures dropped | :17:06. | :17:10.
to six degrees. Sunday sees web and windy weather persisting across the | :17:11. | :17:16.
north-east of the UK. There will be showers across England, but not too | :17:17. | :17:21.
many in the south-east. Even in the West, the showers will tend to use | :17:22. | :17:25.
and the winds will die down a little bit. There will be some showers | :17:26. | :17:32.
coming into western Scotland, and the rain and strong winds will | :17:33. | :17:35.
persist across Caithness and parts of Aberdeenshire. Some showers for | :17:36. | :17:44.
north-west England, but much of Central and the north-east of | :17:45. | :17:46.
England will have blue skies for the afternoon. Temperatures in double | :17:47. | :17:53.
figures. The south-west will be dry for a time before the next batch of | :17:54. | :17:57.
wet weather arrives. The rain | :17:58. | :17:58. |
