Good afternoon. At least three people are understood

to have died and dozens more have been injured after a police

helicopter crashed into the roof of a pub in Glasgow last night. Around

120 people were in the pub at the time, with three people in the

aircraft. Firefighters are looking for anyone still trapped in the

building. Our Scotland correspondent James Cook is at the scene.

Yes, it has been an extraordinary night in Glasgow. A very difficult

night for the people of this city, not least the relatives and friends

of people who were inside that pub that night when the helicopter came

down. More than 12 hours after what happened, the full extent of the

disaster is not clear. The pub was packed, the band was

playing, just another Friday night in the Clutha Vaults. The music was

so loud that no one inside heard the helicopter come down until it was

too late. Suddenly heard a very loud anger. The ceiling had fallen onto

the bar, or the central bit of the pub. -- suddenly heard a very loud

bang. That is when I thought wings were serious, but if I might ignite,

so I ran outside. dozens, then hundreds, of police, firefighters

and paramedics came to the scene. But before they arrived, the people

of Glasgow risked their lives to help. They had no training but did

not hesitate. People formed a little bit of a human chain, side-by-side

with each other, to help pull injured people out. There is blood

on your shirt. It is not mine. As night wore on, some hope.

Firefighters said they had made contact with some trapped survivors.

It is five hours since the helicopter crashed and difficult,

detailed and rescue operation is taking place. Specialist teams have

been drafted in from all over Scotland as they try to bring people

out of this pub alive. That for one man, watching and waiting all night

for news of his father, no comfort. I know my dad was in there. Me and

my family have checked everywhere, we know he was in there. That

helicopter has hit it right at the bit where he sits. By dawn, the

sense of urgency seem to have left. It no longer looked like a rescue

operation as police confirmed that it least one people had died. -- at

least one person. It will take some time to complete

the surge of the building and assess how we begin the investigation. Is

anyone still alive within the pub? We can't say definitively, but you

have heard everyone stressed that it is still a rescue operation.

Scotland's First Minister seems to catch the nation's mood. This is a

black day for Glasgow and Scotland, but it is also St Andrew's Day, a

day we can take pride and courage in we respond to adversity and tragedy.

The BBC understands at least three people have definitely been killed.

Police say they are only confirming the deaths one by one as they are

bringing the bodies out. They have issued a helpline number is for

anybody can serve and about relatives or friends who might have

been in the pub, the number is 0800 092 0410.

Well I'm joined now by our transport correspondent Richard Westcott. So

what will investigators be looking at? It is very early days, we need

to be wary about speculating. I think there will be an early focus

on the engines, you don't have much time, it is a

busy and built-up area. Very speculative. Interestingly, I don't

believe there is a black box in this kind of helicopter, we can't use

flight data recorders, but investigators can look at the data

and find out what has happened. We should find out fairly soon, or at

least get some indication, about what has happened. Thank you.

Detectives say they've identified a man whose body was discovered in a

well in a Surrey village earlier this month. They have named him as

Damian Chlywka, a 32-year-old Polish national who came to the UK five

years ago. His remains were found in Warlingham earlier this month. A

murder inquiry was launched and nine people have been questioned.

The senior Conservative MP Tim Yeo has been dropped by his local party

as their candidate for the next general election. Mr Yeo has been

the MP for South Suffolk since 1983. He was recently cleared by the

Parliamentary standards commissioner over accusations he had broken

A controversial badger culling operation in Gloucestershire came to

an end at midday today, three weeks earlier than scheduled. The plan was

to kill 70% of the badger population in the area to halt the spread of

tuberculosis in cattle. But marksmen have managed to kill only half that

number. That is the news this afternoon. The
