. Workers work through the rubble of the helicopter crash. The pilot was | :00:12. | :00:21.
David Traill and with him were two police constables, Tony Collins and | :00:22. | :00:30.
Kirsty Nelis. The dead and the injured are remembered at a special | :00:31. | :00:36.
service in Glasgow Cathedral. 12 of the injured are still being treated | :00:37. | :00:40.
in hospital tonight. Also on the programme - cutting the cost of | :00:41. | :00:44.
being green, the Government says it will take ?50 off the average annual | :00:45. | :00:48.
energy bill. Violent clashes in Ukraine tonight, | :00:49. | :00:52.
as demonstrators demand closer links with Europe, not Russia. This is a | :00:53. | :00:59.
scene of absolute chaos. The police are growing stunned. There is... | :01:00. | :01:05.
This is a major political crisis in Ukraine. And the class of 1992 comes | :01:06. | :01:12.
of age. Manchester United's dream team, the focus of a new film. | :01:13. | :01:34.
Police have named t three people on board the helicopter that crashed in | :01:35. | :01:39.
Glasgow on Friday night. They were the pilot, David Traill and two | :01:40. | :01:44.
police officers, Kirsty Nelis and Tony Collins. 12 people are still | :01:45. | :01:48.
being treated in hospital. Three of them are in intensive care. Attempts | :01:49. | :01:52.
to remove the helicopter from the site have been continuing all day. | :01:53. | :01:56.
We'll get the latest now from James Cook, who is in Glasgow tonight. Two | :01:57. | :02:04.
days after this crash now and the pain it has caused is becoming ever | :02:05. | :02:08.
clearer. As you say, police have confirmed that eight people have | :02:09. | :02:12.
died, but they also say that they cannot rule out finding more bodies | :02:13. | :02:19.
in the wreckage. Slowly, gently, inch by inch, the | :02:20. | :02:23.
full impact of this crash is becoming clear. It has left this | :02:24. | :02:27.
city with many questions. And now, the search for answers is beginning. | :02:28. | :02:33.
But first, the merge services have -- emergency services have another | :02:34. | :02:36.
job, they must bring out the dead, including three of their own. So | :02:37. | :02:42.
what is the plan tonight? We have lifted the helicopter probably 18 | :02:43. | :02:46.
inches to two feet today to try to tunnel under. It's secure now on the | :02:47. | :02:51.
end of the crane. It's very, very delicate and painstaking work and | :02:52. | :02:55.
also we have to be very careful not to cause further collapse. The scars | :02:56. | :03:00.
this disaster has left are not just physical. Today, with courage, a | :03:01. | :03:06.
survivor returned to the scene to pay tribute. Craig said his only | :03:07. | :03:09.
memory was waking up and being pulled out by a fireman. I don't | :03:10. | :03:27.
remember anything after that. There was a man next to me. He was dead. | :03:28. | :03:34.
The names and faces of the dead are being made public. Kirsty Nelis was | :03:35. | :03:40.
36, a police constable on the air support unit, who had won an ward | :03:41. | :03:45.
for bravery, so too had PC Tony Collins, who was 43. The pilot, | :03:46. | :03:51.
David Traill also David he had served with the RAF in both Gulf | :03:52. | :03:56.
wars and in the pub, Gary Arthur from Paisley was among the victims. | :03:57. | :04:01.
His daughter said he meant the world to her. At Glasgow Cathedral, they | :04:02. | :04:07.
gathered in sorrow. This city has been shaken, but it's still standing | :04:08. | :04:12.
tall, proud of how ordinary people and the emergency services risked | :04:13. | :04:16.
their lives to help others. We do not end this day in despair of the | :04:17. | :04:29.
losses. But our answer is that we stand defiant and that our great and | :04:30. | :04:38.
vibrant and irrepressible city shall stand together with our suffering | :04:39. | :04:44.
ones. The city is standing together. One candle for each of the dead, | :04:45. | :04:50.
giving some light amid the darkness. Well, two sisters who were in the | :04:51. | :04:54.
pub when the helicopter hit have been telling us how each feared that | :04:55. | :04:59.
the other was dead. Ann Faulds and Nancy primrose were injured, but | :05:00. | :05:02.
they were back home and they've been talking to my colleague about | :05:03. | :05:13.
surviving, when so many did not. When the blast went off I looked and | :05:14. | :05:20.
I seen everything around about me was debris. I looked to the right | :05:21. | :05:26.
and there were bodies. Nancy was blown up in the air and on the | :05:27. | :05:29.
ground. She was a couple of feet away. Those who escaped The Clutha | :05:30. | :05:35.
pub can't help but think what could have beenment both of the sisters | :05:36. | :05:39.
were injured, but they know their survival depended on where they sat | :05:40. | :05:43.
in the bar. There were so many people who just didn't make it out. | :05:44. | :05:51.
All their families lost them and the people went for a night out. We were | :05:52. | :06:03.
lucky. People are still piece together their memories after the | :06:04. | :06:07.
shock of Friday noiT, working out who was in the bR and where. | :06:08. | :06:11.
Relatives rushed to the scene hoping for news, but all the time dreading | :06:12. | :06:16.
what it would be. The phone call that I got was Nancy's not good and | :06:17. | :06:21.
you need to be here. I thought that meant come and see Nancy before she | :06:22. | :06:25.
passes away. It's a horrible thing. There are families still facing | :06:26. | :06:30.
their fears and others are grieving. Today, again, people gathered at the | :06:31. | :06:34.
corner near the pub in part because they didn't know what else they | :06:35. | :06:38.
could do. They watched and prayed as the search operation continued, but | :06:39. | :06:42.
for some, including those who escaped, it was important to at | :06:43. | :06:54.
least come here. It's the families and everybody that was involved. I | :06:55. | :06:59.
feel so lucky to be alive. Us two sisters and we both came out. | :07:00. | :07:04.
Tonight, the search operation still seems to dominate the skyline, but | :07:05. | :07:08.
despite the horror, people are determined to remember. | :07:09. | :07:17.
Investigators are probably examining we are told two theories, either a | :07:18. | :07:21.
failure of both engines, possibly caused by some kind of fuel problem, | :07:22. | :07:25.
or some kind of catastrophic failure, perhaps in the gear box of | :07:26. | :07:29.
the helicopter, but it may be some time before we know for sure. | :07:30. | :07:37.
The Government is promising to reduce the average energy bill by | :07:38. | :07:41.
?50 a year in an effort to quell concerns about rising fuel costs. | :07:42. | :07:45.
Ministers say it will be paid for from general taxation and a further | :07:46. | :07:49.
crackdown on tax avoidance. Labour says the move won't prevent future | :07:50. | :07:53.
energy price rises and will do little to address what it says is a | :07:54. | :08:00.
cost of living crisis. The political temperature has been | :08:01. | :08:04.
rising over fuel costs. Labour's promising a price freeze, while five | :08:05. | :08:09.
of the big six energy companies have announced above-inflation increases | :08:10. | :08:12.
in bills. So, today, the Government attempted to take the wind out of | :08:13. | :08:15.
the opposition's sails. What we are going to do is role back the levies | :08:16. | :08:21.
that -- roll back the levies that are placed on bills and this will | :08:22. | :08:26.
mean that for the average bill payer they'll have ?50 off their bills and | :08:27. | :08:31.
it will help families and we're doing it in the way that Government | :08:32. | :08:35.
can do it. So, to ease the pressure on bills, companies will no longer | :08:36. | :08:39.
have to meet the cost of discounts for low-income households. The | :08:40. | :08:42.
Government will foot the bill, but they say the money will come down | :08:43. | :08:48.
from clamping down on tax evasion, not taxpayers' pockets and allow | :08:49. | :08:56.
companies to roll out home instalation measures. Those who move | :08:57. | :09:00.
house will be eligible to ?1,000 towards a bill. Some in the industry | :09:01. | :09:05.
are not that impressed. Actually, at the moment you can get up to ?1,000 | :09:06. | :09:12.
help if you instale measures. You don't have to move house. You do | :09:13. | :09:16.
have to use certain contractors, but that's already there, if only people | :09:17. | :09:21.
knew about it. Not everyone will get ?50 off. One company, EDF, raised | :09:22. | :09:27.
prices by much less this winter than many. It hasn't made a commitment to | :09:28. | :09:32.
bring prices down. Other companies will make their positions clearer | :09:33. | :09:40.
tomorrow. Under Ed's plan gas and electricity bills will be frozen. | :09:41. | :09:44.
The Government have denounced this as a con, but the opposition say the | :09:45. | :09:48.
Government is using smoke and mirrors to conveal a cosy deal with | :09:49. | :09:52.
the energy companies. Energy prices are going up this winter by ?130. A | :09:53. | :09:59.
?50 cut when they're going up by twice that means people are still | :10:00. | :10:03.
paying more. At the start of the festive season, even the prospect of | :10:04. | :10:09.
some money off didn't fill everyone with Christmas cheer. Too little too | :10:10. | :10:13.
late. Any money of my bill is always good. The Government's been worried | :10:14. | :10:19.
that the outlook has been obscured over the rising bills. The | :10:20. | :10:22.
Chancellor will hope he's done enough today to generate more | :10:23. | :10:25.
positive headlines. We'll speak to Iain Watson now. | :10:26. | :10:29.
You've been looking into this ?50 promise all day. What do you think | :10:30. | :10:33.
in I think at this time of year that any good offer that's around has to | :10:34. | :10:38.
be studied very closely and looked at by the small print. What the | :10:39. | :10:41.
Government is saying is they're enabling companies to reduce the | :10:42. | :10:47.
average bill by ?50. But that will be still in excess of ?1400 for gas | :10:48. | :10:53.
and electricity. N every company is pledging to give a reduction. One | :10:54. | :10:57.
company has said because they kept their increases to a relatively low | :10:58. | :11:00.
level then they're not necessarily going to give customers any money | :11:01. | :11:03.
back. If you're a customer of one of the other big six, don't expect a | :11:04. | :11:09.
Christmas bonus either. Don't expect a cheque in a post. The impact won't | :11:10. | :11:13.
be felt until 2014. The Government thinks it will have a popular | :11:14. | :11:17.
message and it's do what it can to reduce the bit of the bill it | :11:18. | :11:20.
controls. Some will be told by clamping down on bad employers who | :11:21. | :11:24.
avoid national insurance contributions, but Labour think | :11:25. | :11:27.
think message is far simpler and easier to understand, simply freeze | :11:28. | :11:30.
prices this winter, whether the energy companies like it or not. | :11:31. | :11:36.
Thank you. At least four people have been | :11:37. | :11:39.
killed and dozens injured after a New York City commuter train | :11:40. | :11:46.
derailed. Several carriages left the track in the Bronx. The railway | :11:47. | :11:51.
along the Hudson River is ordinarily one of the most pist touresque ways | :11:52. | :11:55.
to enter New York, but earlier this morning it became a scene of death | :11:56. | :12:00.
and chaos. The train left the tracks on a sharp bend, only yards from a | :12:01. | :12:04.
station and yards from the freezing water. The lead carriage came to a | :12:05. | :12:10.
halt just short of the river. The derailment occurred at 7. 20am and | :12:11. | :12:13.
the first emergency crews reached the scene within five minutes. They | :12:14. | :12:17.
had to shatter windows of the toppled carriages to reach | :12:18. | :12:21.
survivors. Eyewitnesses said the train had approached the bend going | :12:22. | :12:25.
unusually fast. It's really scary that something like that could | :12:26. | :12:28.
happen. You wonder what speed they were approaching the turn. From her | :12:29. | :12:34.
apartment high above, Mabel heard the terrifying noise. It felt like a | :12:35. | :12:40.
force, a sound and a big force coming towards you. Very, very | :12:41. | :12:49.
powerful. As well as scouring the woodland for passengers, police | :12:50. | :12:52.
divers searched the waters of the river. The derailment occurred early | :12:53. | :12:57.
on a Sunday morning, on a holiday weekend on a train thankfully that | :12:58. | :13:01.
was only half full with 150 passengers. It this been a week-day | :13:02. | :13:05.
commuter service the authorities say they would have been dealing with a | :13:06. | :13:10.
much more major disaster. Investigators are examining the | :13:11. | :13:15.
track, the signal system, the locomotive's black box recorder too. | :13:16. | :13:18.
They'll also interview the driver, who was injured, but survived this | :13:19. | :13:26.
fatal derailment. There have been mass protests on the | :13:27. | :13:33.
streets of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. Demonstrators claim the | :13:34. | :13:39.
President is intent on strengthening links with Russia. Police use tier | :13:40. | :13:49.
gas against the protesters. -- tear gas against the protesters. This is | :13:50. | :13:53.
what happened when they went to see the President in Kiev today. Riot | :13:54. | :13:59.
police clashed with anti-Government protesters, near the President's | :14:00. | :14:03.
headquarters. The angry crowd tried to push their way through. But they | :14:04. | :14:08.
were forced back. The protesters are calling for revolution. They're | :14:09. | :14:11.
trying to breakthrough the police lines and get to the presidential | :14:12. | :14:15.
administration building over there, but this is a scene of absolute | :14:16. | :14:21.
chaos. The police are throwing stun grenades and there is total... This | :14:22. | :14:25.
is a major political crisis in Ukraine. Earlier, more than 100,000 | :14:26. | :14:34.
people had flooded Kiev to demand political change. They accuse the | :14:35. | :14:39.
authorities of a disastrous U-turn. The Government here has rejected | :14:40. | :14:44.
closer ties with the EU in favour of relations with Russia. Hundreds of | :14:45. | :14:50.
protesters took over Kiev's City Council building. With a quick show | :14:51. | :14:55.
of hands, the Mayor was out. They declared a new administration. Who | :14:56. | :15:01.
is in power tonight in Kiev? The people. The people. People of | :15:02. | :15:06.
Ukraine. One senior Government official said the situation in Kiev | :15:07. | :15:12.
was under control. But today's violence suggests that Ukraine, one | :15:13. | :15:17.
of Europe's biggest countries, is entering a period of huge | :15:18. | :15:25.
uncertainty. Time now for some of the sport. Over | :15:26. | :15:31.
to Karthi at the BBC sport centre. Thank you. There were four Premier | :15:32. | :15:35.
League games as well as Scottish Cup fixtures today, so if you don't want | :15:36. | :15:39.
to know the result please pop out of the room for one moment. Liverpool | :15:40. | :15:43.
failed to reduce Arsenal's lead at the top of the table and are now in | :15:44. | :15:46.
fourth after they were beaten by Hull for the first time 3-1 the | :15:47. | :15:50.
score. Chelsea took advantage of | :15:51. | :15:56.
Liverpool's defeat to move into second thanks to a win against | :15:57. | :15:59.
Southampton. Manchester City moved up to third with a 3-0 win over | :16:00. | :16:03.
Swansea. Tottenham and Manchester United shared the points after a 2-2 | :16:04. | :16:07.
draw. Fulham have sacked Martin Jol after | :16:08. | :16:11.
two-and-a-half years. They've lost six games in a row. They are in 18th | :16:12. | :16:17.
place. Rene Meulensteen will take over. Celtic are through to the | :16:18. | :16:22.
fifth round after thrashing Hearts 7-0. Kris Commons scored a hattrick. | :16:23. | :16:26.
Aberdeen are also through after a 1-0 win over Partick. David deck ham | :16:27. | :16:33.
and Ryan Giggs and their 1992 Manchester United youth team-mates | :16:34. | :16:39.
have taken a trip down memory lane. It's the premiere of a film | :16:40. | :16:44.
documenting their unique success which culminating in them winning | :16:45. | :16:48.
the treble in 1999. There is flash photography in the report. | :16:49. | :16:54.
21 years after they burst on to the scene, the six are now famous faces | :16:55. | :16:58.
and firm friends. On the red carpet to see the premiere of a film | :16:59. | :17:02.
telling the story of their lives in football. All of us were just | :17:03. | :17:07.
wanting to be professional footballers and playing for | :17:08. | :17:09.
Manchester United. That's all we ever wanted. What we did over those | :17:10. | :17:14.
ten or 15 years was something they would never have dreamt off. It was | :17:15. | :17:18.
so special. The class of 1992 tells the story of a group of young men in | :17:19. | :17:25.
Manchester, who went on to define a footballing generation. Just six | :17:26. | :17:30.
young lads who were enjoying life. In our eyes we your just playing | :17:31. | :17:35.
with our mates. I was loving it. They went from being Manchester | :17:36. | :17:39.
United's FA Cup udge side to winning the Champions League and achieving | :17:40. | :17:43.
an unprecedented treble. Six boys who grew up together and then became | :17:44. | :17:49.
friends for life. It was good, because six good lads who loved each | :17:50. | :17:54.
other's company and it went from there. From 12 or 13 right up until | :17:55. | :18:00.
today. While all six are involved in football, playing, coaching and in | :18:01. | :18:04.
the media or in the case of David Beckham, starting work on his new | :18:05. | :18:09.
MLS club and while their story is an unusual as it is inspiring, their | :18:10. | :18:17.
place in British footballing history is guaranteed. Rory McIlroy has won | :18:18. | :18:24.
his first title in 2012 beating Adam Scott on the final hole at Royal | :18:25. | :18:30.
Sydney. He was four shots behind, but an excellent round saw him take | :18:31. | :18:34.
the title by one stroke. That's all your sport. | :18:35. | :18:38.
That's it from us. More | :18:39. | :18:40. |
