Good afternoon from Qunu, where this morning the former South African | :00:23. | :00:26.
president Nelson Mandela was laid to rest. | :00:27. | :00:31.
After a funeral service attended by more than 4,000 people, including | :00:32. | :00:34.
Prince Charles, his body was buried on a hillside close to his family | :00:35. | :00:40.
home. The current president Jacob Zuma said he would miss Mr | :00:41. | :00:43.
Mandela's, smile, laughter and leadership, and that work must | :00:44. | :00:46.
continue to build the South Africa of Mr Mandela's dreams. Our world | :00:47. | :00:58.
affairs editor John Simpson reports. It was in this rolling countryside | :00:59. | :01:02.
that Nelson Mandela's walk to Freedom began. | :01:03. | :01:11.
Buyers own wish -- by his own wish, it is where it ended today. The | :01:12. | :01:22.
ceremony was well practised and highly polished, and had a suitable | :01:23. | :01:28.
grandeur to it. The world was watching. The best equipped and | :01:29. | :01:37.
trained soldiers, sailors and airmen in Africa by some way brought their | :01:38. | :01:41.
one-time commander-in-chief to the funeral ceremony. | :01:42. | :01:53.
The hymns sung throughout the ceremony were once that Mandela | :01:54. | :02:00.
himself particularly loved. Although the funeral has been years in the | :02:01. | :02:05.
planning, the vast temporary auditorium was put up in a matter of | :02:06. | :02:11.
days. The family, which has often been driven with disputes about | :02:12. | :02:15.
money and status, came together for the ceremony. His widow sat close to | :02:16. | :02:26.
Winnie, his former wife, who has been brought back into the fold in | :02:27. | :02:30.
recent months, seemingly less radical than she once was. The | :02:31. | :02:41.
guests were a mixed bunch. African presidents, a cane, Princes. Prince | :02:42. | :02:46.
Charles representing the Queen seemed to get less attention than | :02:47. | :02:50.
Oprah Winfrey. Richard Branson was there. So was Gerry Adams, and so | :02:51. | :02:59.
was former Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who only yesterday seemed to have | :03:00. | :03:06.
been snubbed. Mandela's granddaughter brought out the human | :03:07. | :03:09.
side that people especially loved about him. He was a lot of fun to be | :03:10. | :03:15.
around and he was a great storyteller. He had a great sense of | :03:16. | :03:22.
humour. During the past year, we truly missed hearing his voice. At | :03:23. | :03:28.
dinner, he liked to tell stories about his childhood. He preferred | :03:29. | :03:32.
ones that he would poke fun at himself with. Politicians here often | :03:33. | :03:38.
acknowledge that not enough has been achieved since Mandela came to power | :03:39. | :03:41.
19 years ago. President Jacob Zuma made this pledge. South African | :03:42. | :03:51.
children must grow up in a country that is not only politically free, | :03:52. | :04:00.
but which is also free and safe from violence, free and safe from crime, | :04:01. | :04:05.
re-and safe from poverty, ignorance and disease. Free and save from | :04:06. | :04:19.
indignity. Long speeches had predict to be delayed the programme, but | :04:20. | :04:27.
finally it was time for the burial ceremony. -- had predictably | :04:28. | :04:34.
delayed. It took place away from the cameras | :04:35. | :04:52.
while the South African apples paid its last respect. -- airforce. This | :04:53. | :05:06.
was the grave of the most admired leader on earth who once walked | :05:07. | :05:13.
barefoot on these hills. You've been covering the politics of | :05:14. | :05:18.
this country for more than 30 years. What were your impressions of this | :05:19. | :05:23.
momentous day? I thought it was the best of the new South Africa. It was | :05:24. | :05:30.
relaxed, easy, quite jokey at times. You saw people like resident Jacob | :05:31. | :05:35.
Zuma making jokes with other leaders. It didn't feel crisp, | :05:36. | :05:45.
people looking at their watches and saying, OK, now we need to do | :05:46. | :05:52.
something else. But the bits they needed clear discipline, the | :05:53. | :05:55.
military side of it, were absolutely magnificent. I thought it was very | :05:56. | :06:00.
well done. The only thing that let it down was that, inevitably, there | :06:01. | :06:05.
were some presidents, one or two from elsewhere in Africa, who made | :06:06. | :06:11.
these long, turgid speeches, which did let it down a bit, and delayed | :06:12. | :06:18.
it. That I thought the South African element was magnificent. That is it | :06:19. | :06:26.
from as in Qunu. Now, a look at the rest of the day's news. | :06:27. | :06:32.
Consultants at hospitals in England could lose their right to refuse to | :06:33. | :06:35.
work at weekends as part of proposals to tackle high death rates | :06:36. | :06:38.
for patients treated on Saturdays and Sundays. Hospitals which don't | :06:39. | :06:41.
make the changes will face financial penalties. Our health correspondent, | :06:42. | :06:51.
Dominic Hughes, reports. Providing comprehensive care seven | :06:52. | :06:55.
days a week is an issue the NHS has struggled with, but at Poole | :06:56. | :06:59.
Hospital in Dorset, they seem to have found a way. Elderly patients | :07:00. | :07:04.
get to see a consultant quickly and have access to the support they need | :07:05. | :07:10.
at weekends. NHS leaders believe it is the presence of those senior | :07:11. | :07:13.
doctors that can make a real difference across a hospital. | :07:14. | :07:18.
Firstly, you don't have any appropriate admissions to the | :07:19. | :07:22.
hospital. Secondly, when they are admitted, they get a quick diagnosis | :07:23. | :07:25.
and treatment is started more quickly. That means patients spend | :07:26. | :07:30.
less time in hospital and as a whole the hospital is more efficient. For | :07:31. | :07:35.
the past year, a group of experts has been considering how to make | :07:36. | :07:38.
sure the NHS provides the best care seven days a week. They proposed | :07:39. | :07:43.
removing the right of consultants to reviews working at weekends. Crucial | :07:44. | :07:49.
diagnostic test should also be available seven days a week and a | :07:50. | :07:53.
series of rewards and sanctions, including multi-million pound fines | :07:54. | :07:59.
for hospitals, could encourage the entire system to change. But there | :08:00. | :08:03.
are warnings over how much these plans might cost. This will cost | :08:04. | :08:10.
more money. When not sure how much, possibly between one billion and ?2 | :08:11. | :08:15.
billion. That is a huge challenge. Many hospitals are struggling to | :08:16. | :08:20.
balance their books even now. These plans offer a vision of how | :08:21. | :08:25.
emergency services in England may operate in the future. But the | :08:26. | :08:30.
unanswered questions are where any money will come from and whether | :08:31. | :08:35.
consultants will agree. Detectives investigating the | :08:36. | :08:37.
disappearance of the Oxford teenager Jayden Parkinson have asked the | :08:38. | :08:40.
public not to conduct their own searches for her. Police say they | :08:41. | :08:43.
believe Jayden has been murdered. They are searching a number of areas | :08:44. | :08:46.
near Didcot. She was last seen nearly two weeks ago in Oxford. Two | :08:47. | :08:50.
people have been arrested. The Transport Secretary Patrick | :08:51. | :08:53.
McLoughlin has once again raised the prospect of a third runway at | :08:54. | :08:56.
Heathrow, saying the government hasn't ruled it out. A | :08:57. | :08:58.
government-appointed commission is due to publish its recommendations | :08:59. | :09:07.
on airport expansion this week. China's robot rover has driven off | :09:08. | :09:11.
its landing module and on to the Moon's surface. The robotic vehicle | :09:12. | :09:14.
rolled down a ramp lowered by the lander and on to the volcanic plain | :09:15. | :09:17.
known as Sinus Iridum. The lander will operate there for a year, while | :09:18. | :09:21.
the rover is expected to work for some three months. | :09:22. | :09:28.
Cricket, and the Ashes seem all but lost as Australia ended day three of | :09:29. | :09:31.
the crucial third test in Perth leading England by 369 runs. Once | :09:32. | :09:35.
again, England failed to impress with the bat and were bowled out for | :09:36. | :09:38.
251. Australia then piled on the runs closing on 235-3, as Joe Wilson | :09:39. | :09:51.
reports. Sunday in the park in Perth with | :09:52. | :09:55.
cricket just next door. If they tried hard, England fans could try | :09:56. | :09:58.
to ignore it, although the local paper had already declared the Ashes | :09:59. | :10:07.
one. 251 all out England's latest effort. Stuart Broad was soon | :10:08. | :10:16.
afterwards in hospital with an injured but. A depleted England | :10:17. | :10:19.
attack for Australia's second innings. Chris Rogers added a | :10:20. | :10:26.
dropped catch into this grim cricket cocktail. One should have an out | :10:27. | :10:30.
stumped twice but the wicketkeeper didn't have the ball. No England | :10:31. | :10:38.
player has made a century in this Ashes. David Warner completed his | :10:39. | :10:41.
second of the series with a typical flourish. He was out by the close, | :10:42. | :10:52.
but in here is celebration is run away. Australia are making it look | :10:53. | :11:00.
simple. You can see more on all of today's | :11:01. | :11:04.
stories on the BBC News Channel. The next news on BBC One is at 5.30pm | :11:05. | :11:07.
this afternoon - bye for now. Prepare yourself for a week of | :11:08. | :11:24.
lively weather, all thanks to a strong Jetstream overhead which | :11:25. | :11:27.
itself is being driven by huge temperature once trusts -- contrast | :11:28. | :11:35.
in the Allan Taylor. -- in the Atlantic. Along these ripples that | :11:36. | :11:44.
jet stream buckles and we start to see areas of low pressure developed | :11:45. | :11:53.
will stop --. This will bring the change from sunny conditions to the | :11:54. | :11:56.
wetter conditions we will finish the day with. Locally severe gales in | :11:57. | :12:02.
Scotland. Heavy rain in Northern Ireland which is pushing eastwards, | :12:03. | :12:06.
so expect heavy rain across southern and eastern Scotland. Some parts of | :12:07. | :12:12.
eastern England stay dry. We will lose their hazy sunshine we have at | :12:13. | :12:16.
the moment. Elsewhere, a lot of cloud and occasional rain. Quite | :12:17. | :12:21.
mild in the south, temperatures 13 degrees. Staying mild in the South | :12:22. | :12:25.
will stop most of us will see rain at some point in the night. Cold air | :12:26. | :12:32.
pushes into Scotland and Northern Ireland later, turning showers | :12:33. | :12:35.
wintry on higher ground and a brisk of ice as we start Monday morning. | :12:36. | :12:40.
No such problems for England and Wales, with a mild start again. This | :12:41. | :12:46.
weather front grinds to a halt across East Anglia, so the cloud | :12:47. | :12:51.
lingers. Our rakes of rain on and off. The best of the sunshine to | :12:52. | :12:58.
eastern areas. Some heavy local showers in Scotland and Northern | :12:59. | :13:03.
Ireland. Again, they could turn wintry on higher ground. The weather | :13:04. | :13:09.
front across the South gains energy on Monday into Tuesday morning. Here | :13:10. | :13:14.
we could see up to two inches of rain, so minor flooding to take | :13:15. | :13:18.
those into Tuesday morning. It does clear, and Tuesday has a bit of high | :13:19. | :13:25.
pressure. It will probably be the hype -- the high point of the week. | :13:26. | :13:31.
Some of the rain lingers in Kent and a few showers across the North of | :13:32. | :13:34.
Scotland where it will be quite windy. But not as windy as in the | :13:35. | :13:37.
rest of the week. Strong winds dominate all of us. Into Wednesday | :13:38. | :13:47.
we start of fine bright but that weather front approaches. The rain | :13:48. | :13:54.
is initially heavy in the West but it turns patchy as it moves | :13:55. | :13:58.
eastwards. Later, the winds pick up and more persistent rain starts to | :13:59. | :14:04.
edging. Widespread gales on Wednesday night, and up to 80 miles | :14:05. | :14:11.
an hour possible Northern Ireland and Scotland. Prepare, there could | :14:12. | :14:18.
be some damage and destructor as we go into the Thursday morning | :14:19. | :14:23.
rush-hour will stop --. A very blustery day. We maintain that cold | :14:24. | :14:31.
real Thursday night into Friday. Even with those strong winds, there | :14:32. | :14:34.
is the risk of frost across eastern areas. Predominantly dry and bright. | :14:35. | :14:43.
More and wet and windy weather to take us into the weekend. | :14:44. | :14:44. |
