Nelson Mandela, read fighter, resident and prisoner has been | :00:09. | :00:18.
buried in his childhood village. Thousands of dignitaries, | :00:19. | :00:20.
celebrities and old friends paid tribute to the man who led South | :00:21. | :00:33.
Africans out of oppression. You will remain our guiding light, | :00:34. | :00:37.
illuminating the path as we continue the long journey to build the South | :00:38. | :00:45.
Africa of your dreams. The end of a long and remarkable journey - we'll | :00:46. | :00:52.
be looking at his legacy. Also on tonight's programme: The | :00:53. | :00:58.
actor Peter O'Toole - Lawrence of Arabia - has died after a long | :00:59. | :01:05.
illness. Providing round the clock care - | :01:06. | :01:08.
hospitals in England face fines if they fail to provide the same | :01:09. | :01:11.
service at weekends as during the week. | :01:12. | :01:16.
And after his Wimbledon triumph, Andy Murray adds the BBC Sports | :01:17. | :01:19.
Personality of the Year to his trophy cabinet. | :01:20. | :01:42.
Good evening from Qunu, the village behind me where Nelson Mandela grew | :01:43. | :01:48.
up and where he was buried today. 4,500 dignitaries - including Prince | :01:49. | :01:58.
Charles - took part in the ceremony. There were tributes from President | :01:59. | :02:02.
Jacob Zuma, Mandela's granddaughter, and a eulogy from one of his oldest | :02:03. | :02:08.
friends. Our first report tonight is from our world affairs editor John | :02:09. | :02:12.
Simpson. It was in this rolling countryside | :02:13. | :02:17.
that Nelson Mandela's long journey to freedom began. By his own wish, | :02:18. | :02:35.
it is where it ended today. The ceremony was well back test and | :02:36. | :02:40.
highly polished, with a suitable grandeur to it. The world was | :02:41. | :02:50.
watching. The best equipped and trained soldiers, sailors and airmen | :02:51. | :02:53.
in Africa by some weight wrought their one-time commander in chief to | :02:54. | :03:04.
the funeral ceremony. -- by some way brought. The hymns sung throughout | :03:05. | :03:13.
the ceremony were ones Mandela himself particularly loved. Although | :03:14. | :03:16.
the funeral has been years in the planning, the vast temporary | :03:17. | :03:20.
auditorium was put up in a matter of days. The Mandela family, often | :03:21. | :03:27.
driven by disputes about money and status, came together. His widow sat | :03:28. | :03:36.
close to winning and Della, his former wife, who has been brought | :03:37. | :03:40.
back into the fold in recent months, seemingly less radical than | :03:41. | :03:52.
she once was. -- Winnie Mandela. The guests were a mixed bunch. African | :03:53. | :03:58.
Presidents, it came, Princes. Prince Charles, representing the Queen, | :03:59. | :04:03.
seemed to get less attention than Oprah Winfrey. Richard Ranson was | :04:04. | :04:12.
there. So was Gerry Adams, and so was former Archbishop Desmond Tutu, | :04:13. | :04:15.
who, only yesterday, seemed to have been snubbed. A long-term close | :04:16. | :04:25.
friend of Mandela who, as an ANC activist spent 26 years in jail, as | :04:26. | :04:32.
opposed to Mandela's 27, paid his respects. Farewell my dear brother, | :04:33. | :04:44.
my mental, my legal. -- my mentor, my leader. I have lost a brother. My | :04:45. | :04:51.
life is in a void and I don't know who to turn to. Mandela's | :04:52. | :04:59.
granddaughter brought out the human side that people especially loved | :05:00. | :05:05.
about him. He was a lot of fun to be around and a great storyteller. He | :05:06. | :05:09.
had a great sense of humour. During the past year, we truly missed | :05:10. | :05:17.
hearing his voice. At dinner, he liked telling stories about his | :05:18. | :05:22.
childhood. He prepared -- preferred ones poking fun at himself. | :05:23. | :05:28.
Government politicians here often acknowledged not enough has been | :05:29. | :05:31.
achieved since Mandela came to power in 19 years ago. President Jacob | :05:32. | :05:38.
Zuma made this pledge. You will remain our guiding light, | :05:39. | :05:44.
illuminating the path as we continue the long journey to build the South | :05:45. | :05:54.
Africa of your dreams. We shall not say goodbye, because you are not | :05:55. | :06:01.
gone. You will live for ever in our hearts and minds. Long speeches had | :06:02. | :06:13.
predictably delayed the programme. But finally it was time for the | :06:14. | :06:27.
burial ceremony. It took place away from the cameras while the South | :06:28. | :06:31.
African air force paid its last respect. A bugle sounded over the | :06:32. | :06:42.
grave of the most admired leader on Earth, who once went barefoot over | :06:43. | :06:53.
these hills. As Southern African correspondent is | :06:54. | :06:59.
with me. This ceremony was followed VIPs. What did ordinary South | :07:00. | :07:06.
Africans make of it's I was in a village not too far from here where | :07:07. | :07:09.
he was born and the government put up screens to make sure people could | :07:10. | :07:13.
come and see the funeral service. But it was not a large crowd, people | :07:14. | :07:18.
decided to watch it at home because they felt it was a bit impersonal, | :07:19. | :07:23.
and I sensed a bit of resentment and anger because they say the | :07:24. | :07:27.
government did not take the ordinary South Africans into consideration | :07:28. | :07:31.
when this funeral was organised. Thank you. | :07:32. | :07:38.
Nelson Mandela's death has led to a great deal of soul searching about | :07:39. | :07:41.
whether the country has lived up to the ideals he fought for. Our Africa | :07:42. | :07:47.
correspondent has been talking to some of his neighbours here in Qunu. | :07:48. | :07:53.
Across the road from the Mandelas this morning, this family had just | :07:54. | :07:58.
worried that elderly mother who knew Nelson as a boy. Two funerals in a | :07:59. | :08:05.
small village this weekend. But the mood here is one of celebration of | :08:06. | :08:13.
lives well lived. And this is -- I'm feeling happy about this day because | :08:14. | :08:17.
he did a lot to us. We are in freedom because of him. He fought | :08:18. | :08:25.
for us. An air force salute swings over a nearby town, a poor | :08:26. | :08:30.
neighbourhood assembling for a flavour of his funeral. Well, some | :08:31. | :08:39.
people work. Mandela's party the ANC is busy handing out free food. It | :08:40. | :08:43.
seems to be the main attraction. Unemployment here is nearly did the | :08:44. | :08:50.
percent. ANC is Africa, South Africa is ANC. Even without Mandela? | :08:51. | :08:58.
Mandela was an umbrella. It does not mean we cannot survive without him. | :08:59. | :09:04.
But while his face is on the banknotes, the ANC is losing some | :09:05. | :09:09.
ground. This woman was a teacher and has always voted ANC. But not any | :09:10. | :09:14.
more. Everybody wants to grab something from a -- for themselves. | :09:15. | :09:22.
It is corruption. Do you think Nelson Mandela's death will change | :09:23. | :09:28.
that's it is going to be worse. It's not easy to assess the impact of the | :09:29. | :09:33.
week like this. I hacked it will not change anything here. But it has | :09:34. | :09:39.
been an opportunity to reflect on the legacy and the extent to which | :09:40. | :09:48.
this country is living up to it. John Simpson joins us now. Where is | :09:49. | :09:53.
South Africa after these last ten remarkable days? Well, I thought | :09:54. | :10:02.
today showed the new South Africa at its absolute best. It was relaxed, | :10:03. | :10:06.
it was easy, but where discipline and precision was required, it was | :10:07. | :10:12.
there. I thought it did very well. I think President Jacob Zuma has a big | :10:13. | :10:18.
problem now after this last week. On Tuesday, he was booed and that does | :10:19. | :10:25.
seem to have affected his whole red ability and standing. I've heard | :10:26. | :10:31.
people starting to say maybe somebody could challenge his | :10:32. | :10:36.
authority just as he did some time ago. Maybe somebody else will come | :10:37. | :10:45.
up now. There is also a problem for the ANC itself. Just over that Hill | :10:46. | :10:53.
now, sadly, Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders of our time, is | :10:54. | :10:57.
lying in his grave. People are bound to say now, increasingly, all the | :10:58. | :11:05.
past is the past, that was Nelson Mandela's battle. Now, what is the | :11:06. | :11:12.
ANC doing about the future? So, Nelson Mandela's life has come full | :11:13. | :11:17.
circle. He once said the only tribute he wanted was a recognition | :11:18. | :11:21.
he had done his duty. In the last ten days, whether it was resident | :11:22. | :11:27.
bomber's eulogy or millions of small tributes from South Africans, one | :11:28. | :11:31.
thing has shone right through. Behind me is a man who has done | :11:32. | :11:35.
right from his people. That's all from us. Now, the rest of the day's | :11:36. | :11:44.
news. The actor Peter O'Toole, who became | :11:45. | :11:47.
an international star as Lawrence of Arabia, has died in hospital in | :11:48. | :11:50.
London. He was 81 and had been ill for some time. The Irish President | :11:51. | :11:53.
said tonight, "Ireland and the world has lost one of the giants of film | :11:54. | :11:57.
and theatre." Nick Higham looks back at his life. | :11:58. | :12:02.
David lean's epic Lawrence of Arabia. We need a miracle. It turned | :12:03. | :12:13.
a jobbing actor with piercing blue eyes into a global form star, the | :12:14. | :12:20.
ultimate dashing hero. He played Hamlet on stage, posed for IT | :12:21. | :12:26.
photographers and starred in a succession of Hollywood movies. I | :12:27. | :12:36.
want a son. All my Sons are bustards. But the swaggering screen | :12:37. | :12:47.
star was a renowned hell-raiser with his friend Richard Harris. In time, | :12:48. | :12:53.
the drink threatened to destroy his career, and the man himself. A | :12:54. | :12:59.
return to the London stage as Macbeth in 1980 was a fiasco. But by | :13:00. | :13:05.
the time he played the alcoholic journalist Geoffrey Benard, he had | :13:06. | :13:14.
given up the booze. I found myself in bed with Barry. A great jockey. | :13:15. | :13:24.
He ended his career playing versions of himself - frail but still full of | :13:25. | :13:31.
life, as intravenous, when he played an ageing actor. -- as in Venus. | :13:32. | :13:43.
Peter O'Toole, who's died aged 81. Hospitals in England are to face | :13:44. | :13:46.
sanctions if they don't provide the same level of care at weekends as | :13:47. | :13:50.
they do during the rest of the week. The proposals have been confirmed by | :13:51. | :13:53.
the Medical Director of NHS England, Sir Bruce Keogh, following concerns | :13:54. | :13:55.
about higher death rates of patients on Saturdays and Sundays. Jane | :13:56. | :14:02.
Draper reports. The NHS is constantly busy and under | :14:03. | :14:07.
pressure at times. Now, hospitals in England are being told they must | :14:08. | :14:12.
have more senior doctors on wards and run more tests and scans at | :14:13. | :14:18.
weekends. Firstly, you don't have inappropriate admissions to the | :14:19. | :14:21.
hospital. Secondly, when those patients are admitted, they get a | :14:22. | :14:25.
diagnosis quicker and appropriate treatment is started more quickly, | :14:26. | :14:30.
so they spend less time in hospital. The hospital as a whole is | :14:31. | :14:35.
more efficient. Some hospitals, like Poole Hospital, already have more | :14:36. | :14:39.
senior staff working throughout the week. Today's plan recommends | :14:40. | :14:44.
removing the right of consultants to refuse to work at weekends. The | :14:45. | :14:48.
initial focus is on making sure patients with urgent problems are | :14:49. | :14:55.
seen quickly by senior doctors. This is not just about patients admitted | :14:56. | :14:59.
ads emergencies. Ultimately, the NHS is being axed to provide a service | :15:00. | :15:05.
where they work seamlessly seven days a week. Some tough negotiations | :15:06. | :15:12.
with doctors leaders lied ahead. The doctors union agrees seven-day | :15:13. | :15:15.
services are vital, but it will choose for its workers to have a | :15:16. | :15:20.
worklife balance. Already, there are warnings about whether these changes | :15:21. | :15:27.
are affordable. We're not sure how much, probably between ?1 billion | :15:28. | :15:31.
and ?2 billion. That will be a challenge. Many hospitals are | :15:32. | :15:34.
struggling to balance their books even now. The changes begin with | :15:35. | :15:41.
urgent and emergency care. Hospitals who fail to transform their working | :15:42. | :15:44.
patterns will face fines running to millions of pounds. Leaders of the | :15:45. | :15:50.
NHS in England know this is a big challenge, but say patients deserve | :15:51. | :16:00.
nothing less. Syrian activists claim government | :16:01. | :16:03.
air raids have killed 37 people - among them 14 children - in the | :16:04. | :16:06.
northern city of Aleppo. A video, which cannot be independently | :16:07. | :16:08.
verified, appears to show the main square in Aleppo. The city is | :16:09. | :16:11.
divided between government and rebel held areas, with regular air raids | :16:12. | :16:15.
on the rebel districts. About 200,000 protestors have taken | :16:16. | :16:18.
to the streets of the Ukrainian capital Kiev to again demand a | :16:19. | :16:22.
stronger relationship with Europe. But the EU today called off talks | :16:23. | :16:24.
about closer integration, claiming the Ukrainian president wasn't | :16:25. | :16:27.
serious enough about forming closer ties. | :16:28. | :16:35.
Ireland officially emerged from its bailout programme tonight. In a | :16:36. | :16:40.
televised address to the nation, it was acknowledged that despite recent | :16:41. | :16:45.
economic improvements, many people are yet to feel the benefits. | :16:46. | :16:49.
However, he insisted sacrifices made by the public are starting to make a | :16:50. | :16:54.
difference. Now, let's get the support needs. | :16:55. | :17:00.
As you may have seen earlier, Andy Murray has been crowned the BBC | :17:01. | :17:05.
sports personality of the year. The Wimbledon champion received his | :17:06. | :17:10.
award from a tennis legend. Our correspondent reports. This year's | :17:11. | :17:23.
ten won is Andy Murray. -- this year's Sports Personality of the | :17:24. | :17:31.
Year. Now at his training base in Florida, he has won one of sport 's | :17:32. | :17:39.
most famous awards. I couldn't have done it without you. I know | :17:40. | :17:42.
sometimes I'm not the easiest worsened to support. I've had a lot | :17:43. | :17:46.
of pressure on me for a long time so I'm glad I've managed to break | :17:47. | :17:52.
through. After Sir Bradley Wiggins last year, 2013 is once again given | :17:53. | :17:58.
British sport 20 to celebrate, and tonight was a chance to do precisely | :17:59. | :18:05.
that. The prize for team of the year went to the British and Irish and | :18:06. | :18:12.
after the big tree in Australia. Please welcome Sir Alex Ferguson. | :18:13. | :18:19.
One of the ovations of the night went to Sir Alex Ferguson, honoured | :18:20. | :18:24.
for his extraordinary managerial career. A special reward for one of | :18:25. | :18:34.
sport's most special talents. It's been eventful in the Premier | :18:35. | :18:37.
League. If you don't want to know what has happened, leave the room. | :18:38. | :18:44.
Luis Suarez scored twice as Liverpool recorded their biggest win | :18:45. | :18:48.
at White Hart Lane. Manchester United ended a run of four league | :18:49. | :18:53.
games without a win and Norwich drew with Swansea. Australia look set to | :18:54. | :18:59.
reclaim the Ashes after taking complete control of the third test | :19:00. | :19:03.
in Perth. They will resume on day four with a lead of 369 runs. The | :19:04. | :19:08.
tourist bowled out cheaply and Stuart Broad had to go for a scan on | :19:09. | :19:20.
his butt -- his foot. Australia closed with 230 543. Leicester have | :19:21. | :19:27.
kept alive their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the Heineken | :19:28. | :19:32.
Cup. There was a last-minute converted try for the Tigers, who | :19:33. | :19:44.
snatched a 15 height --- 14 win. That's all from us. In a moment on | :19:45. | :19:55.
BBC One, the news where you are, but we leave you now with images of | :19:56. | :19:58.
Nelson Mandela on the day he was laid to rest. Goodnight. | :19:59. | :20:22.
You will remain our guiding light, illuminating the path as we continue | :20:23. | :20:30.
the long journey to build the South Africa of your | :20:31. | :20:31. |
