Hello, very good afternoon. Police are questioning the mother of

:00:21.:00:25.

three-year-old Mikaeel Kular after the discovery of a body of a young

:00:26.:00:32.

boy in woodland in Fife. Mikaeel's disappearance in Edinburgh on

:00:33.:00:35.

Thursday sparked a massive police search. This afternoon a body was

:00:36.:00:39.

removed from woods at the rear of a bungalow in the town of Kirkcaldy.

:00:40.:00:43.

Our correspondent, Robert Hall is there. Robert. Tonight, Scotland's

:00:44.:00:47.

First Minister echoed the views of the community in Edinburgh,

:00:48.:00:51.

referring to a harrowing development in a story which touched people's

:00:52.:00:57.

heart. Late this afternoon an ambulance rolled down the road under

:00:58.:01:01.

the trees close to this residential street taking the child's body away.

:01:02.:01:07.

In rain soaked woodland, 20 miles from Mikaeel Kular's home in

:01:08.:01:10.

Edinburgh, the forensic teams move carefully around the discover I ril

:01:11.:01:15.

which dashed the hopes of so many. An investigation into the

:01:16.:01:20.

disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been wide-ranging and fast moving.

:01:21.:01:25.

As a result of these inquiries, I can confirm that we've recovered the

:01:26.:01:35.

body of a young boy in Fife shortly before midnight. Mikaeel's face had

:01:36.:01:44.

become familiar to all of us, the smiling three-year-old who

:01:45.:01:47.

reportedly vanished from his bed. The search for him has ended on a

:01:48.:01:50.

quiet Kirkcaldy housing estate, close to a bungalow which, the BBC

:01:51.:01:56.

understands, belongs to an aunt. Today, the house, and its garden,

:01:57.:02:00.

containing a child's trampoline, have been sealed off. The police

:02:01.:02:04.

activity is concentrated in the wood beyond the garden fence. Mikaeel's

:02:05.:02:12.

mother, 33-year-old, Rosdeep Kular, has been held in police custody. The

:02:13.:02:17.

hunt for her son began, according to senior officers, after she told them

:02:18.:02:21.

he had gone missing. The Kular's live at Ferry Gait Crescent in the

:02:22.:02:25.

east of Edinburgh. Police were alerted at 7.15 am on Thursday

:02:26.:02:30.

morning. By 5.00pm that evening, emergency services, backed by

:02:31.:02:32.

hundreds of volunteers, had begun a search which would last two-days. As

:02:33.:02:38.

darkness fell the police operation moved across the Firth Firth of

:02:39.:02:46.

Forth to Kirkcaldy. At 1.10 am this morning they announced a body had

:02:47.:02:51.

been found. So, so sad. Poor wee boy. Throughout the day families in

:02:52.:02:56.

Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy have been laying flowers in Mikaeel's memory.

:02:57.:03:01.

When I heard the news, it was -- I was devastated that this is what

:03:02.:03:04.

happened. We wanted to come and pay our respects. Myself and it's

:03:05.:03:09.

absolutely heartbreaking. Heartbreaking. Forensic work in and

:03:10.:03:15.

around the house in Kirkcaldy is expected to continue for many hours

:03:16.:03:22.

yet. Rosdeep Kular was formally detained at midnight last night.

:03:23.:03:27.

Under Scottish law there has to be a maximum of 24-hours within which she

:03:28.:03:32.

is either charged or released. Police Scotland say they do hope to

:03:33.:03:35.

provide an update within that time frame. Kate. Robert, thank you. The

:03:36.:03:39.

Senior Conservatives have been paying tribute to Lord McAlpine, the

:03:40.:03:43.

former party treasurer who has died at the age of 71. His family said he

:03:44.:03:48.

passed away peacefully last night at his home in Italy. Lord McAlpine, a

:03:49.:03:51.

close adviser to Margaret Thatcher, was more recently wrongly implicated

:03:52.:03:55.

in a child abuse scandal. Alex Forsyth reports. A towering figure

:03:56.:04:01.

who made a huge contribution to public life. That's how Lord

:04:02.:04:04.

McAlpine has been described in tributes today. He was a powerful

:04:05.:04:10.

player in the Conservative Party as both Deputy Chairman and treasurer.

:04:11.:04:13.

His support of Margaret Thatcher was unwaivering. He was a loyal aide and

:04:14.:04:18.

friend. But former colleagues remember the man, as well as the

:04:19.:04:24.

politician. He was almost renaissance man. He'd done many

:04:25.:04:29.

things and been good at pretty well all of them, industry, commerce, the

:04:30.:04:37.

arts, politics. He was trustworthy. He was funny. Puckish almost in his

:04:38.:04:44.

manner. He made many good friends. Lord McAlpine's longstanding support

:04:45.:04:47.

for the Conservative Party was briefly broken when he backed the

:04:48.:04:53.

eurosceptic referendum group in the 1997 general election. He soon

:04:54.:04:56.

returned to the fold. Over the years, his fundraising expertise

:04:57.:05:01.

raised millions for the party and helped bank roll three successful

:05:02.:05:06.

general elections. In 2012 he was wrongly implicated by the BBC's

:05:07.:05:11.

Newsnight programme in child sex abuse allegations for which he

:05:12.:05:16.

received an apology and substantial damages. Lord McAlpine was known as

:05:17.:05:28.

a cull toured man. A cultured man. Lord McAlpine who has died at the

:05:29.:05:34.

age of 71. The Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, says the party's

:05:35.:05:38.

former Chief Executive, Lord Rennard, should not rejoin the

:05:39.:05:41.

party's group in the House of Lords unless he apologises to women who

:05:42.:05:44.

claim they've been sexually harassed. An internal investigation

:05:45.:05:49.

found the claims were "broadly credible", but could not be proved

:05:50.:05:53.

beyond doubt. Lord Rennard has always denied the allegations. Two

:05:54.:05:59.

Britons are now known to be among the 21 people killed in a suicide

:06:00.:06:02.

bombing in Afghanistan. One of those who died was a Labour Party

:06:03.:06:06.

candidate in the forthcoming European elections. The the bomb was

:06:07.:06:12.

detonated outside a busy restaurant frequented by Westerners in the

:06:13.:06:16.

capital city Kabul. From Kabul, Carolyn Wyatt sent this report. The

:06:17.:06:19.

wreckage of what had been a special place. For Westerners and wealthier

:06:20.:06:23.

Afghan alikes. One of the rare restaurants in this city where they

:06:24.:06:28.

could mix and relax. All that shattered in a heartbeat by a

:06:29.:06:33.

suicide bomber and two attackers armed with AK-47 s they went through

:06:34.:06:37.

the restaurant, shooting dead families and colleagues out for

:06:38.:06:41.

Friday night dinner. Amongst the dead, four of the UN staff here, as

:06:42.:06:45.

well as the Head of the International Monetary Fund in

:06:46.:06:48.

Afghanistan. Today, it was confirmed that one of the British victims was

:06:49.:06:52.

a Labour candidate for the European elections called Del Singh. Today,

:06:53.:06:56.

his friends paid tribute to him and expressed their shock. The other

:06:57.:07:01.

Britton skilled was former soldier, Simon Chase, a father of two from

:07:02.:07:05.

Liverpool. He had settled with his fiancee in Northern Ireland where he

:07:06.:07:09.

worked as a doorman in a bar. The staff that worked with him commented

:07:10.:07:12.

that he was a true gentleman, great friend and had a nature that

:07:13.:07:16.

couldn't see the wrong in anyone. They are obviously very upset today.

:07:17.:07:25.

Security here was seen as tight. The suicide bomber bypassed all of that

:07:26.:07:29.

by simply blowing up the entrance, with it the sense that anywhere in

:07:30.:07:35.

Kabul could be seen as secure. Today, the clearing up began in

:07:36.:07:39.

earnest, neighbours of the restaurant are still in shock. This

:07:40.:07:45.

woman lives in the house opposite. She told me what happened. All of a

:07:46.:07:50.

sudden the blast happened. I screamed. We jumped. There was

:07:51.:07:56.

machine gun, heavy firing. The I was shaking. I hide myself behind the

:07:57.:08:03.

curtain to stay safe, in a safe place. A lot of people has passed

:08:04.:08:09.

away and got killed. I can see the blood outside. So that's sad. It

:08:10.:08:13.

makes me very upset. Hopefully, I'm going to get over it. But it's not

:08:14.:08:18.

eatsy. I knew the owner of the restaurant, I knew the guards. This

:08:19.:08:22.

year, Afghanistan faces elections, then the withdrawal of NATO combat

:08:23.:08:26.

troops. This attack, in the heart of the capital, has again shattered

:08:27.:08:35.

hopes of peace. Now in tennis, Andy Murray has reached the fourth round

:08:36.:08:39.

of the Australian Open after beating Feliciano Lopez in straight-sets. He

:08:40.:08:43.

described the win as a "big step up" as one of the first serious tests to

:08:44.:08:47.

his form after undergoing back surgery. Patrick Geary has more. It

:08:48.:08:54.

might not look it but by Melbourne's recent standards this was a close

:08:55.:08:57.

day, much more pleasant conditions to watch and play tennis. Andy

:08:58.:09:01.

Murray will certainly have felt more at home. It took him a while to

:09:02.:09:05.

calibrate his radar against Feliciano Lopez. The Spaniard could

:09:06.:09:10.

duck out of that, but there was no avoiding Murray in full flow. When

:09:11.:09:14.

if matters he has an uncanny ability to be in the right praise place at

:09:15.:09:18.

the right time. It earned him the first set in the tie-break. The

:09:19.:09:23.

world number 27 was being out witted by the second set he seemed to know

:09:24.:09:28.

his fate. Lopez's serve went again in the first game of the third. The

:09:29.:09:32.

Gulfing class between the players growing as the match went on. By the

:09:33.:09:37.

end Lopez had no answer to Murray, who is yet to lose a set in three

:09:38.:09:43.

matches. Today was a big step up for me. It's the best win I've had since

:09:44.:09:48.

my surgery. I'm happy with that. In the interview room Murray is talking

:09:49.:09:54.

down his chances of winning this Grand Slam. On the court he is

:09:55.:09:58.

suggesting otherwise. There's more throughout the evening on the BBC

:09:59.:10:02.

News Channel, as ever, we are back with the late news at 10.00pm. Now

:10:03.:10:05.

on BBC One, it's time
