Hello, good evening. 18 mile in our winds and heavy rain have again hit | :00:22. | :00:29.
the coast of the south-west of England and West Wales, with | :00:30. | :00:33.
floodwaters rising once more on the Somerset Levels. Tonight, all real | :00:34. | :00:37.
services to want from the West Country are cut off. The train lines | :00:38. | :00:41.
had already been suffering severe disruption. Today, a landslip on | :00:42. | :00:46.
track at Crewkerne and nearby flooding closed them completely. | :00:47. | :00:52.
Chris Buckler is in Somerset for us. The railway lines are the latest | :00:53. | :00:56.
victims of the weather and they will cause huge problems, their closure, | :00:57. | :00:59.
for people here in the West Country, who have already been | :01:00. | :01:04.
facing huge difficulties and the misery is here in Somerset Levels | :01:05. | :01:08.
and in particular you will see that the sandbags and large sandbags are | :01:09. | :01:12.
lined up at the edge of this river. Although it is dark I can tell you | :01:13. | :01:15.
that the water is extremely high. It has been topping over again this | :01:16. | :01:20.
afternoon and that has caused a great deal of concern. But the | :01:21. | :01:24.
weather and the storms have caused problems right across the country, | :01:25. | :01:31.
including on the south coast. Along Britain's coastline the | :01:32. | :01:34.
weather has been making its presence felt. Towns and villages across the | :01:35. | :01:39.
South and West have been on the front line for the force of this | :01:40. | :01:44.
latest storm. The crashing waves are indiscriminate in their assault and | :01:45. | :01:48.
in places like Kingsand in Cornwall, buildings are already | :01:49. | :01:51.
battered and people worried after days of disruption. You can stop the | :01:52. | :01:56.
weather. This is relentless and we have more of it to come. You have to | :01:57. | :02:00.
batten down the hatches and be resilient. Inland the storms are | :02:01. | :02:07.
having a major impact. Landslips and flooding have blocked rail lines | :02:08. | :02:09.
between London and the West Country. The track is barely visible | :02:10. | :02:16.
above the water. I came to catch a train about 4:25pm, no trains, no | :02:17. | :02:23.
ticket office, no replacement bus services. Phone calls just say they | :02:24. | :02:26.
don't know when they are going to have replacement bus service. We are | :02:27. | :02:33.
completely stuck. It is not just the railways. On the Somerset Levels | :02:34. | :02:36.
roads are closed and pathways have been swamped by overflowing rivers | :02:37. | :02:40.
and rain. People have no choice but to wade through water, to rescue | :02:41. | :02:46.
animals from the cut-off village of more than it today. This is not the | :02:47. | :02:50.
first time fields here have flooded, threatening livelihoods and | :02:51. | :02:53.
the farmers' leader says six months ago he wrote to the Prime Minister | :02:54. | :02:57.
to ask for funding to prevent flooding, but his request was | :02:58. | :03:02.
refused. We have ministers coming down, environmental chairman coming | :03:03. | :03:05.
down saying we must learn the lessons. The lesson was there 18 | :03:06. | :03:11.
months ago. Everyone in Somerset new that the rivers would not be fit for | :03:12. | :03:16.
purpose if we had another winter of rain. But the former floods minister | :03:17. | :03:21.
who took that decision says despite the claims of campaign as he was | :03:22. | :03:23.
acting on the best information at the time. If I am honest the | :03:24. | :03:30.
evidence that was prevented -- presented to me was that while it | :03:31. | :03:33.
may have made some difference large parts of the Levels would have | :03:34. | :03:36.
flooded whatever we had done because we have them worst rainfall since | :03:37. | :03:43.
1760. The weather has been exceptional. There are still | :03:44. | :03:45.
hundreds of flood warnings and alerts in place across many | :03:46. | :03:49.
communities. But in Somerset they are struggling to stop the rising | :03:50. | :03:54.
water. Scores of homes are evacuated and sandbags can only do so much to | :03:55. | :04:01.
help against this. Those battling the floods will not | :04:02. | :04:05.
want to hear this, but the latest news from the Environment Agency is | :04:06. | :04:09.
not good. They are talking about yet more bad weather, the potential of | :04:10. | :04:13.
more flooding and once again one of the areas of concern is the Somerset | :04:14. | :04:17.
Levels. They are also worried about the south coast, particularly the | :04:18. | :04:21.
coast of Dorset, so other results as the wind picks up again here people | :04:22. | :04:26.
are taking all they can to try and deal with this, yet more sandbags. | :04:27. | :04:34.
Mark Harper, the Immigration Minister, has resigned from the | :04:35. | :04:37.
government after it emerged he had employed a cleaner who was in the UK | :04:38. | :04:41.
illegally. Mr Harper had been in charge of implementing the | :04:42. | :04:45.
government's immigration reforms. Our political correspondent Iain | :04:46. | :04:49.
Watson is here. Embarrassing, to say the least? It It is embarrassing if | :04:50. | :04:54.
any Immigration Minister resigns because he has employed an illegal | :04:55. | :05:00.
immigrant. He is piloting controversial legislation, which | :05:01. | :05:02.
requires employers to do more to check the immigration status of | :05:03. | :05:06.
their employees, and that is why he left. He said he checked on her | :05:07. | :05:13.
immigration status in 2007, was shown a letter saying she had | :05:14. | :05:18.
indefinite leave to remain and the right to work. On the 20th of | :05:19. | :05:23.
January, with the big Immigration Minister -- with the Immigration | :05:24. | :05:26.
Bill about to be passed, and a couple of days ago his officials | :05:27. | :05:30.
said she did not have the right to remain. A resignation letter was | :05:31. | :05:34.
drawn up and he has gone. The Prime Minister has replied warmly. He said | :05:35. | :05:39.
he recognised that Mark Harper did not do anything wrong, he stuck to | :05:40. | :05:43.
the letter of the law, has been an effective minister, but Labour say | :05:44. | :05:47.
while they respect his decision they think perhaps some aspects of the | :05:48. | :05:51.
Immigration Bill, may have to be revisited. | :05:52. | :05:55.
Princess Cristina Ross Payne, the youngest daughter of King Juan | :05:56. | :06:00.
Carlos, has been questioning court over fraud allegations involving her | :06:01. | :06:04.
husband's business -- Princess Cristina of Spain. The case has | :06:05. | :06:11.
provoked public outrage. From Majorca, Tom Burridge reports. | :06:12. | :06:16.
For the first time ever in Spain, a member of the Royal family arriving | :06:17. | :06:23.
to be questioned in court. Princess Cristina seemed relaxed, but inside | :06:24. | :06:30.
the court she sat opposite a photo of her father, the king, and faced | :06:31. | :06:34.
serious allegations. According to reports, she said she trusted her | :06:35. | :06:38.
husband, who is accused of defrauding millions of euros of | :06:39. | :06:42.
public money. She is suspected of spending some of that money on | :06:43. | :06:46.
personal expenses and this while millions of Spaniards are | :06:47. | :06:52.
unemployed. When they married nearly two decades ago, Spain's Royals were | :06:53. | :06:56.
more popular. But the scandal has damaged Spain's once much loved | :06:57. | :06:59.
modern, whose popularity has been falling. -- monarch. King Juan | :07:00. | :07:06.
Carlos was heavily criticised while hunting effort than -- elephants in | :07:07. | :07:10.
Botswana, when his citizens were suffering a critical moment in the | :07:11. | :07:14.
economic crisis. There is no doubt this scandal has caused significant | :07:15. | :07:17.
damage to the reputation of Spain's Royals. So when the Princess is | :07:18. | :07:22.
answering questions in court, she will not only be defending her | :07:23. | :07:25.
credibility but that of the monarchy in Spain. Tonight, the Princess's | :07:26. | :07:31.
lawyer said she had answered all the questions she could, but this is a | :07:32. | :07:34.
country where corruption scandals are common and some of the Spanish | :07:35. | :07:38.
public have already judged for themselves. | :07:39. | :07:46.
At least two people have been killed and nine injured after falling | :07:47. | :07:49.
boulder hit a train in the French Alps. The accident happened on a | :07:50. | :07:53.
remote stretch of line north of the city of Nice. The rock was described | :07:54. | :07:58.
as the size of a car. Football, the Premier League leaders | :07:59. | :08:04.
Arsenal were thrashed 5-1 by Liverpool this afternoon. Liverpool | :08:05. | :08:07.
complete Lee dominated the game at Anfield, with Arsenal 4-0 down | :08:08. | :08:11.
within 20 minutes. John Watson reports. Unite two teams harbouring | :08:12. | :08:16.
hopes of finishing with silverware this season. Today's contest could | :08:17. | :08:20.
prove a turning point in the Premier League turning -- title race. Steven | :08:21. | :08:26.
Gerrard providing for Martin Skrtel to head in. The pair combined again | :08:27. | :08:31.
and Liverpool were sued two up. It went from bad to worse for the | :08:32. | :08:37.
visitors come Sterling-macro giving Liverpool 3-0 lead. When Daniel | :08:38. | :08:41.
Sturridge made it four, the party started. Nothing for Arsenal Wenger | :08:42. | :08:45.
to celebrate as his title charge studied. When Sterling added a | :08:46. | :08:52.
fifth, it was Liverpool who kept their place in the top four. This | :08:53. | :08:58.
was a masterclass from Liverpool. It is the second weekend of matches | :08:59. | :09:02.
in Rugby union's Six Nations championship. England beat Scotland | :09:03. | :09:07.
20-0 at Murrayfield. Wales suffered a surprise defeat to Ireland. Paddy | :09:08. | :09:14.
Jackson completed the 26 points -3 victory as Wales were outfought and | :09:15. | :09:17.
out thought in every department in Dublin. Great Britain have missed | :09:18. | :09:23.
out on the medals in the first day of competition in the Winter | :09:24. | :09:26.
Olympics in Sochi. Yorkshire's Jamie Nicholls was in silver medal | :09:27. | :09:29.
position after the first round of the snowboard slopestyle final, but | :09:30. | :09:34.
he finished in sixth place following a slight slip off the rails. | :09:35. | :09:38.
