We are about to put a whole new spin on the world of mobiles.

:00:25.:00:30.

We are at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -

:00:31.:00:33.

the big show devoted to phones, tablets and all things mobile.

:00:34.:00:40.

We're a bit behind schedule, but we're going to get there.

:00:41.:00:46.

Although, if we look a bit distracted, it is

:00:47.:00:48.

because we are preparing for a rather

:00:49.:00:50.

It is not that we are not interested in the floating displays,

:00:51.:00:59.

connected bus stops, flash cars, smart shoes,

:01:00.:01:02.

It is just that we are about to bash out something

:01:03.:01:07.

Last year, we filmed an entire programme in 360 degrees,

:01:08.:01:11.

allowing those watching in virtual reality to look around the fantastic

:01:12.:01:16.

locations simply by turning their heads or their phones

:01:17.:01:18.

You really feel like you have been teleported into the situation.

:01:19.:01:30.

Not only that, but these days, we also have the ability to stream

:01:31.:01:36.

So imagine that, the next time we send a robot to the moon,

:01:37.:01:43.

if it has a 360 camera on board, then we can all put on a pair

:01:44.:01:47.

of goggles and actually feel like we are there, too.

:01:48.:01:50.

And so that is what we are doing today, getting ready to go live

:01:51.:01:54.

Not to the moon, admittedly, but to a place that is still

:01:55.:02:01.

So here we are in the massive Mobile World Congress.

:02:02.:02:08.

Eight enormous halls of madness and noise,

:02:09.:02:10.

as everyone tries to launch their product with maximum

:02:11.:02:13.

But these days this event is not just about mobiles,

:02:14.:02:17.

Since you can use a phone as a VR headset, many companies have opted

:02:18.:02:27.

to up the excitement by strapping people in and hurling them about.

:02:28.:02:32.

Yes, folks, VR can be totally immersive, if you have your

:02:33.:02:35.

And I don't even want to think what kind of experience this

:02:36.:02:41.

But going live in 360 is less about the headset and more

:02:42.:02:49.

about the kind of camera equipment you can and cannot use.

:02:50.:02:54.

You are currently watching me through a Nokia Ozo,

:02:55.:02:58.

which is a professional 360 camera with a professional pricetag

:02:59.:03:09.

to boot - about 45,000 US dollars, or 40,000 euros.

:03:10.:03:12.

It has eight lenses all around the sphere, which means not only can

:03:13.:03:20.

you can see in all directions, but it can also shoot in 3-D

:03:21.:03:23.

because that combination of lenses allows it to process

:03:24.:03:26.

What is really weird is it has this enormous battery pack at the back,

:03:27.:03:31.

which you think would be in shot, but actually this thing has a blind

:03:32.:03:34.

And what they so is they just get that almost-360 view

:03:35.:03:39.

and stretch it around like that.

:03:40.:03:40.

Modern 360 cameras will stitch the scene together themselves

:03:41.:03:43.

in real time, automatically wrapping that weird,

:03:44.:03:45.

warped video into a sphere around your head,

:03:46.:03:47.

and that is what enables them to go live.

:03:48.:03:49.

Now, if you wanted to stream the full 360 view from the Ozo,

:03:50.:03:53.

you are going to need some extract kit.

:03:54.:03:56.

Two dedicated hardware boxes, and an internet upload speed

:03:57.:03:59.

And, at a trade show like this, we are not that lucky.

:04:00.:04:06.

I think we have to accept that it's early days.

:04:07.:04:10.

To get really high-quality, ideally stereoscopic video,

:04:11.:04:13.

so you really can look around and feel a sense of depth,

:04:14.:04:17.

and feel that you're there, is going to take a while.

:04:18.:04:22.

There are bandwidth problems, and just having the equipment that

:04:23.:04:25.

can transmit and that amount of data,

:04:26.:04:27.

the picture gets rendered according to exactly where you're looking.

:04:28.:04:40.

It's going to take a while to get it sorted, but we're starting there.

:04:41.:04:44.

We are going to be doing two lives in 360, testing two different

:04:45.:04:47.

cameras and this is no mean feat because as with last year's 360

:04:48.:04:51.

show, we are coming to this before the manufacturers have

:04:52.:04:53.

So, to get good pictures, good sound, and a decent bit

:04:54.:04:58.

of interaction with the audience, we are having to hack together

:04:59.:05:00.

various bits of kit, and hope no-one trips over

:05:01.:05:03.

My microphone goes into a transmitter, which goes

:05:04.:05:06.

into a receiver, which goes into a box, which plugs into another

:05:07.:05:13.

box, and then we've got, like, a half a mile of ethernet cable,

:05:14.:05:16.

which is going to a network access point, which is hidden

:05:17.:05:19.

The first 360 camera we are using is the Orah 4i -

:05:20.:05:24.

four lenses which between them can shoot the 360 video

:05:25.:05:27.

Although it is important to note that this is the resolution

:05:28.:05:32.

The viewer only sees a part of this as they look around the scene.

:05:33.:05:40.

At the moment, it's not showing us anything that we want.

:05:41.:05:56.

It's a bit blurry, but we're going to get better.

:05:57.:06:04.

It was our very first attempt, so things were bumpy on the run-up

:06:05.:06:08.

We were supposed to go like -15 minutes ago.

:06:09.:06:12.

That said, it seemed to hang together, and viewers on our YouTube

:06:13.:06:17.

360 channel got to find out a bit more about a car that's planning

:06:18.:06:21.

Yes, it has a gas turbine engine from the Typhoon Eurofighter.

:06:22.:06:27.

The gas turbine is for your below 800mph manoeuvres and then

:06:28.:06:44.

the rockets fire you up, give you the kick to over a thousand.

:06:45.:06:49.

Now, streaming such a high-quality picture takes a lot of data,

:06:50.:06:55.

hence we had to use a fat, wired internet

:06:56.:06:57.

connection of about 10 megabits per second.

:06:58.:07:00.

But, for our second attempt, we went commando.

:07:01.:07:02.

The Ricoh Theta S is the camera we used to shoot the 360 helicopter

:07:03.:07:06.

It is a small hand-held stick with two fish-eye lenses.

:07:07.:07:14.

Its full view is only 2K, the same as a normal high-def

:07:15.:07:18.

picture, so the part you see in virtual reality is much lower

:07:19.:07:21.

resolution but that does means it is possible to stream the video

:07:22.:07:24.

live over the mobile network, which is what we did,

:07:25.:07:27.

To give them a taste of what it is like to be so close

:07:28.:07:32.

Very soon, Ricoh is releasing the Theta R which has a few

:07:33.:07:44.

upgrades, including more connectors, expandable storage, and it

:07:45.:07:49.

will do the stitching in the camera itself,

:07:50.:07:51.

rather than needing a computer to do all the grunt work.

:07:52.:07:55.

For now, though, we were pretty happy with our little experiment,

:07:56.:07:59.

and very soon there will almost certainly be more

:08:00.:08:02.

fully integrated kits, to let us go live in 360 with much less bother.

:08:03.:08:06.

When we went to up a glacier and to the Large Hadron Collider

:08:07.:08:09.

to film those in 360, we used six GoPros strapped together

:08:10.:08:12.

We then had to stitch that footage together manually,

:08:13.:08:17.

using a powerful computer and software, and many, many hours.

:08:18.:08:24.

Well, since then, GoPro has released the Omni,

:08:25.:08:26.

which is a case in which six GoPros fit.

:08:27.:08:29.

It has one remote start for all six cameras,

:08:30.:08:31.

which is good, and it also comes with a box that does

:08:32.:08:34.

And in a couple of months' time, GoPro says it is going to release

:08:35.:08:41.

an update which allows you to do that live.

:08:42.:08:43.

And, if you want to create your own 360 videas,

:08:44.:08:46.

this tiny camera by LiFi plugs into your Android phone.

:08:47.:08:49.

The videos are not live, but the stitching is quick,

:08:50.:08:51.

and you can share it easily on your social networks.

:08:52.:09:04.

Right, what else is hot at this year's MWC?

:09:05.:09:07.

Here's Stephen Beckett with a round-up.

:09:08.:09:09.

Incredibly, at a convention with some of the world's biggest

:09:10.:09:12.

phone manufacturers hawking their newest and shiniest devices,

:09:13.:09:14.

this is the phone that everyone is talking about.

:09:15.:09:17.

Finnish start-up HMD Global has resurrected a scintillating piece

:09:18.:09:19.

of nostalgia, with a reboot of its Nokia 3310.

:09:20.:09:22.

HMD licensed the Nokia phone brand at the end of 2016.

:09:23.:09:27.

The close to indestructible handset, with a seemingly infinite battery

:09:28.:09:35.

life, has been given a new lease of life,

:09:36.:09:38.

with modern curves, jazzy colours and, of course,

:09:39.:09:40.

BlackBerry has also gone back to basics with a new flagship phone

:09:41.:09:44.

It has a physical gesture sensitive keyboard that hides a fingerprint

:09:45.:09:48.

And that is not the only slice of nostalgia here at NWC.

:09:49.:09:53.

Samsung is getting in on the action, too, with this classic Norris

:09:54.:09:56.

pencil, although I would not

:09:57.:09:58.

sharpen this particular one because there is quite a lot

:09:59.:10:02.

of digital stuff in the end, to allow

:10:03.:10:04.

Google would much rather you talk to your devices though,

:10:05.:10:08.

It has announced its personal assistant, Google Home,

:10:09.:10:12.

will finally be available for sale outside of the US,

:10:13.:10:14.

and by May, in the UK.

:10:15.:10:16.

And, in another new attempt to dominate the AI market,

:10:17.:10:19.

the company also said it will roll out its voice-activated digital

:10:20.:10:22.

assistant to all android phones running Marshmallow and Nougat.

:10:23.:10:24.

Until now, it has only been available on Goggle's own Pixel

:10:25.:10:27.

That is, apart from Huawai and Lenovo mobiles.

:10:28.:10:30.

Those are set to use Amazon's Alexa instead.

:10:31.:10:34.

Lenovo's upcoming Moto Z will get its assistance smarts

:10:35.:10:37.

through a snap-on back, which they're calling a moto mod.

:10:38.:10:41.

Others, though, are ditching customisation.

:10:42.:10:43.

LG launched its new flagship G6 phone without the modular capability

:10:44.:10:46.

The company say its customers do not fancy forking out for extra parts.

:10:47.:10:56.

The LG G6 also knocks the traditional aspect ratio oyt

:10:57.:11:01.

of the park - the screen is 18x9 - twice as tall as wide.

:11:02.:11:05.

Smartphones have traditionally been 16x9.

:11:06.:11:10.

And that is it for the shortcut of click at NWC in Barcelona. A full

:11:11.:11:21.

version is available online now. And let us know what you think of our

:11:22.:11:25.

attempt at a 360 degrees episode. To be kind. Thank you for watching, see

:11:26.:11:31.

you soon.
