Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news. | :00:15. | :00:18.
The Glasgow Commonwealth Games is rocked by the resignation of its | :00:18. | :00:21.
Chief Executive. John Scott admits he took gifts and hospitality from | :00:21. | :00:26.
potential suppliers. In other news tonight: eyewitnesses | :00:26. | :00:30.
tell of the last few moments before these teenage girls jumped to their | :00:30. | :00:36.
deaths into the River Clyde. Paying the penalty? Hearts' refusal | :00:36. | :00:39.
to sack this convicted sex offender leads to threats of a boycott by | :00:39. | :00:48.
sponsors, fans and advertisers. And later in the programme: | :00:48. | :00:51.
First an ace and then a royal flush. Andy Murray eases into the last | :00:51. | :01:01.
:01:01. | :01:04. | ||
Their chief-executive of Glasgow's Commonwealth Games has stood down | :01:04. | :01:08.
after admitting he brought the organisation's rules of accepting | :01:08. | :01:12.
gifts and hospitality from potential contractors and suppliers. | :01:12. | :01:15.
The sudden resignation of John Scott is seen as a setback for the | :01:15. | :01:19.
games which will be held in three years. | :01:19. | :01:23.
This was John Scott just a few weeks ago, celebrating the start of | :01:23. | :01:27.
building work at the athletes village. There was no indication | :01:27. | :01:31.
then that anything was wrong. His sudden resignation today was a | :01:31. | :01:36.
shock to many. In a statement, Glasgow 2014 said Mr Scott offered | :01:36. | :01:42.
to resign over an error of judgment. He accepted an offer from a | :01:42. | :01:46.
potential supplier but did not declare it. This was a breach of | :01:47. | :01:52.
Glasgow 2014's policy on gifts and gratuities. It is not known what | :01:52. | :01:58.
the gift was, but police say they are not investigating. All I will | :01:58. | :02:01.
say is that it was significant enough that John Scott was prepared | :02:01. | :02:08.
to step up and resign. He was prepared to admit what he had done. | :02:08. | :02:15.
The host for the 2014 Commonwealth Games will be Glasgow. It was just | :02:16. | :02:19.
months after this announcement that John Scott was appointed. He has | :02:19. | :02:24.
been the public face of the Games, in charge of their delivery and | :02:24. | :02:31.
their defender when costs rose. is some eight years ahead of the | :02:31. | :02:34.
staging of the Games, and when you're going through a big process | :02:34. | :02:37.
clearly you're trying to moderate amount of money invested, because | :02:37. | :02:42.
it is a speculative bet. You have no idea you're going to win. If you | :02:42. | :02:46.
spend huge amounts of money on a bed you don't Secure, you get | :02:46. | :02:52.
criticised. Tonight, Glasgow 2014 is beginning the hunt for a new | :02:52. | :02:58.
executive. The organising committee is adamant the bed is on track. | :02:58. | :03:03.
With three years ago tell the Games begin, they will have to act fast | :03:03. | :03:08.
to ensure John Scott's resignation does not threaten this. | :03:08. | :03:11.
Let's go now to our business editor Douglas Fraser who is at the | :03:11. | :03:20.
Velodrome. First, do we know anything more of what John Scott | :03:20. | :03:24.
accepted? There is very little detail about that, but we | :03:24. | :03:32.
understand a potential Contractor offered some gifting kind worth we | :03:32. | :03:37.
are told several thousand pounds. That was accepted but not declared, | :03:37. | :03:42.
which it should have been according to the rules of the organisation. | :03:43. | :03:47.
We are told normal information is being offered, not so much to be | :03:47. | :03:52.
dead John Scott, whose reputation is damaged and to apparently feels | :03:52. | :03:56.
horrendous, but to protect the potential bidder. We have to a | :03:56. | :04:01.
simmer they're still in the process of bidding. How damaging his John | :04:01. | :04:05.
Scott's resignation to the overall success of their games? Bear in | :04:05. | :04:09.
mind that major sporting events have a pretty bad record recently. | :04:09. | :04:14.
If you look at the hosting of the FIFA World Cup recently, and the | :04:14. | :04:18.
corruption allegations surrounding that, and also the Delhi World Cup | :04:18. | :04:22.
was mired in allegations. They had to get the money handling | :04:22. | :04:27.
absolutely right. More than 5 million is being spent on venues | :04:27. | :04:32.
like this, and at the moment, although this has been dealt with | :04:32. | :04:40.
by the city council, contracts for up accommodation and cleaning and | :04:40. | :04:44.
all of these things, that process is absolutely critical at the | :04:44. | :04:48.
Mollet. The other thing going on just now is ramping up the size of | :04:48. | :04:52.
the organisation. In October, it moved the new headquarters that is | :04:52. | :04:57.
much bigger, and will be in Merchant City. Most weeks they add | :04:57. | :05:01.
more people to the staff, with around 60 now and 100 expected next | :05:01. | :05:08.
year. That is a big increase in the scale of the organisation. | :05:08. | :05:11.
Leadership but that was absolutely critical, and the question is how | :05:11. | :05:16.
the now managed to continue without John's got in place. | :05:16. | :05:20.
Eye witnesses have told of the moments before two teenage girls | :05:20. | :05:24.
threw themselves to the best from the Erskine Bridge. A fatal | :05:24. | :05:27.
accident inquiry into how Neve Lafferty and Georgia Rowe died | :05:27. | :05:30.
heard from a passing motorist who described how he saw them with | :05:30. | :05:36.
their arms around each other and their backs to the water. | :05:36. | :05:42.
Shown to the inquiry today, the CCTV pictures taken of the main | :05:42. | :05:47.
exit in Bishopton. It is just before 7:45pm on an ad girls died. | :05:47. | :05:51.
Neve Lafferty and George are now were the only girls who left the | :05:51. | :05:56.
centre about time. They walked past the barrier and onto the road. | :05:56. | :06:02.
Within one hour, they were on the Erskine Bridge. The inquiry was | :06:02. | :06:07.
told that he was driving on the Erskine Bridge around 8:40pm that | :06:07. | :06:11.
night. He's a two figure sitting on the railings with their backs to | :06:11. | :06:15.
the water. He said the leaned back towards the water. He said it | :06:15. | :06:20.
happened quickly. They were facing the traffic and, he said, it seemed | :06:20. | :06:24.
they put their arms around each other and back they went. He was | :06:24. | :06:29.
asked by the process -- Procurator Fiscal if he saw anything that | :06:29. | :06:33.
would explain it. He said there were not arguing but just leaned | :06:33. | :06:40.
back. This woman was also driving at night. Days later, she | :06:40. | :06:43.
recognised Neve Lafferty from a photograph in a newspaper is one of | :06:43. | :06:53.
:06:53. | :06:56. | ||
She said she made eye-contact with Neve Lafferty. She said there was a | :06:56. | :07:00.
strange expression of arise. She said Neve Lafferty was just a few | :07:00. | :07:06.
feet away and she could see her eyes quite clearly. Beverley | :07:06. | :07:11.
Cotterell was driving back from war: that night. I saw two girls on | :07:11. | :07:14.
the right hand side. They caught my attention because they were not | :07:14. | :07:23.
walking across the bridge. One of the girls actually had like she was | :07:23. | :07:26.
looking over and so she pushed herself up a wee bit. That is what | :07:26. | :07:31.
I saw and what caught my attention. The inquiry also heard today that | :07:31. | :07:37.
in his statement another man witnessed. He said when he saw the | :07:37. | :07:41.
girls, they were holding hands. The inquiry at Paisley Sheriff Court | :07:41. | :07:47.
continues tomorrow. You are watching Reporting Scotland. | :07:47. | :07:55.
Still to come: the show must go on. How Scotland's outdoor Shakespeare | :07:55. | :07:59.
Festival as coping with her underwhelming summer weather. | :07:59. | :08:03.
It has been a great debt has got at Wimbledon. Andy Murray is through | :08:03. | :08:07.
to the next round of the singles, Aziz Jamie Murray and the mixed | :08:07. | :08:13.
doubles and Colin Fleming. And you don and a new day and a | :08:13. | :08:18.
newly for him, and he is feeling good. | :08:18. | :08:22.
Appeals to the Supreme Court in London should only be allowed if | :08:22. | :08:26.
Scotland's highest court permits it. That is the view of a panel of | :08:26. | :08:29.
legal experts appointed by the First Minister to look at the role | :08:29. | :08:33.
of the UK Supreme Court. It follows a number of controversial decisions | :08:33. | :08:39.
taken recently. The SNP Government tonight welcomed the findings. | :08:39. | :08:42.
We welcome the report that gives us parity with other jurisdictions | :08:42. | :08:49.
within the United Kingdom. It also means the ultimate authority as the | :08:49. | :08:54.
Scots scored here in Edinburgh. Joining me now is the Home Affairs | :08:54. | :08:57.
Correspondent Mabel and -- Reevel Alderson. This caused a mighty | :08:57. | :09:00.
river Alex Salmond said the Supreme Court should have no place in the | :09:00. | :09:06.
Scottish legal system. Yes, I was a huge row. A political row, a legal | :09:06. | :09:11.
row up a constitutional row. It follows the second of two very | :09:11. | :09:14.
controversial cases which went to the Supreme Court. That of Nat | :09:14. | :09:19.
Fraser, who was appealing against his conviction for murder. He asked | :09:19. | :09:24.
the Appeal Court in Edinburgh to refer his case to the Supreme Court | :09:24. | :09:30.
on a matter of importance. They refused, so he was then able to go | :09:30. | :09:35.
directly to the Supreme Court did have a here in there anyway. That | :09:35. | :09:38.
is a rout also taken by Luke Mitchell at the moment. He was | :09:38. | :09:42.
convicted of the murder of Jodi Jones. The First Minister is angry | :09:42. | :09:45.
that somehow or other people were able to get round the final court | :09:45. | :09:50.
of Appeal in Scotland and go to the Court in London. What actual | :09:50. | :09:57.
changes would this make? If these changes where enacted, what it | :09:57. | :10:00.
would mean it is she would only be able to go to the Supreme Court in | :10:00. | :10:04.
London if the Appeal Court in Edinburgh said you could. That | :10:04. | :10:09.
would bring us into line with the situation in England and Wales, and | :10:09. | :10:14.
indeed in Northern Ireland. I have to say, these changes, if they were | :10:14. | :10:21.
to be made, would have to be made by the Westminster Parliament. And | :10:21. | :10:29.
a delicious plate Brays, -- and a delicious phrase, what McCluskey | :10:29. | :10:33.
said that the legal plumbing needs to be worked out. | :10:33. | :10:36.
More pressure and Hearts tonight after their decision not to sack | :10:36. | :10:39.
Craig Thomson after he was placed on the sex offenders' register. One | :10:39. | :10:44.
of the club's sponsors has withdrawn his support and a stadium | :10:44. | :10:48.
advertising is setting the same. Fans are threatening a boycott | :10:48. | :10:54.
later this week. John Murray is angry at Hearts. As | :10:54. | :10:59.
the father of two young daughters he is concerned. His company's name | :10:59. | :11:04.
appears on billboards around Tynecastle. It is disgusting and | :11:04. | :11:07.
dead ball and sent a message to the world that this kind of behaviour | :11:07. | :11:12.
is acceptable. It is totally not. Pressure is growing all round on | :11:12. | :11:18.
Hearts. These are some of the club's official sponsors. They say | :11:18. | :11:24.
they're increasingly concerned and today one withdrew their support. | :11:24. | :11:29.
They say they have no choice but to withdraw and say they're extremely | :11:29. | :11:32.
disappointed that our Hearts has handled the situation. Craig | :11:32. | :11:35.
Thomson pleaded guilty this month to lewd and libidinous behaviour | :11:36. | :11:40.
towards two young teenage girls. The club's owner of Vladimir | :11:40. | :11:44.
Romanov decided not to sack him, instead suggesting that may have | :11:44. | :11:49.
been an explanation for his actions. Many Hearts fans are furious. | :11:49. | :11:53.
Supporters' website had been inundated with angry complaints. | :11:53. | :11:57.
Some supporters groups are prepared to go even further. We will be | :11:57. | :12:04.
calling for a boycott. We want to make it clear that this decision is | :12:04. | :12:08.
unacceptable. Within the last hour, Craig Thomson has issued a | :12:08. | :12:12.
statement through his solicitor, asking Hearts fans and the wider | :12:12. | :12:16.
public to respect the judgment of the courts and of Heart of | :12:16. | :12:21.
Midlothian Football Club. Some appear to support his call. It is | :12:21. | :12:25.
not up to Hearts to police the player, 0 to do the job of the | :12:25. | :12:28.
court in deciding whether the player is a danger to the public. | :12:28. | :12:35.
It is up to them to decide whether he is in breach of contract and, | :12:35. | :12:39.
whether he is a not, whether to keep him in employment. Between | :12:39. | :12:44.
sponsorship withdrawal and threat of a fans' boycott, the pressure is | :12:44. | :12:47.
undoubtedly 91 Heart of Midlothian to change its decision. The | :12:47. | :12:52.
question now is whether its owner, Vladimir Romanov, will do so. If he | :12:52. | :12:59.
doesn't, just how much it could cost the club. | :12:59. | :13:03.
Now some of the other stories across Scotland: at 13-year-old boy | :13:03. | :13:05.
has appeared in court charged with murder. | :13:05. | :13:09.
This follows the death of 34-year- old Dawn McKenzie in Hamilton on | :13:09. | :13:14.
Friday evening. The teenager made no plea and was remanded in custody. | :13:14. | :13:18.
A woman has died and two other people have been injured after a | :13:18. | :13:21.
car mounted that it Patten mother off. Police say it appeared the | :13:21. | :13:26.
driver became ill while driving down the state. He hit two parked | :13:26. | :13:29.
cars before staking two pedestrians, one of whom died on the scene. The | :13:29. | :13:38.
driver and another woman are being It is rapidly approaching make- | :13:38. | :13:43.
your-mind-up time for the voters of Inverclyde. They go to the polls | :13:43. | :13:46.
this week to choose a new MP following the death of David Cairns | :13:46. | :13:51.
last month. Our political correspondent has been meeting the | :13:51. | :13:55.
hopefuls as they make a last push in the tightly fought contest. | :13:55. | :13:59.
The circus is in town in more ways than one. On Thursday, the people | :13:59. | :14:03.
of Inverclyde fate for a new Westminster and tea and that means | :14:03. | :14:13.
:14:13. | :14:14. | ||
political hopefuls looking for votes. She has made creating more | :14:14. | :14:20.
jobs in the area a top priority of her campaign. Alex Salmond has an | :14:20. | :14:24.
ambition to be industrialise Scotland and I want to read | :14:24. | :14:28.
industrialise Inverclyde using renewable energy. Traditionally | :14:28. | :14:34.
this is a Labour energy put -- area. The candidate is the council leader. | :14:34. | :14:37.
Ian Mackenzie wants to hold on to his seat by bringing renewable | :14:37. | :14:42.
energy jobs here, too. He says the SNP have not helped deliver them. | :14:42. | :14:47.
Over the last year alone, we bid for the renewable energy jobs only | :14:47. | :14:51.
to find that they went to the east coast, so they tend to be | :14:51. | :14:55.
overlooked this. The Liberal Democrats have lost lots of support | :14:55. | :15:00.
in this area. 20-year-old student said the bridge and it may be young | :15:00. | :15:06.
but she is hopeful of winning them back. -- Sophie Bridger. I think | :15:06. | :15:11.
that as a young person I have a lot to offer because we need more | :15:11. | :15:17.
energy and optimism. Conservatives do not really think | :15:17. | :15:20.
they have a chance of winning but they are aiming for second place. | :15:20. | :15:24.
David Wilson is a councillor whose campaign is increasingly aimed at | :15:24. | :15:28.
the nationalist. I have found on the doorstep people have been | :15:28. | :15:32.
talking about independence because they got a fright after May. They | :15:32. | :15:36.
did not think they were voting for independence, for an SNP with an | :15:36. | :15:40.
overall majority but that is what they have got and they are worried. | :15:40. | :15:44.
The UK Independence Party are standing here, too. Mitch Sorbie is | :15:44. | :15:48.
a nightclub owner hoping to take Westminster by storm. It is vital | :15:48. | :15:53.
we get jobs quickly and we use the money that is getting wasted in | :15:53. | :15:56.
Brussels in the European Union to invest back into Inverclyde, to | :15:56. | :16:03.
help stimulate the jobs market. is season here. They are famously | :16:03. | :16:11.
easy to catch. But there is always the chance of disappointment. -- it | :16:11. | :16:15.
is mackerel season. To move it requires a top-secret | :16:15. | :16:18.
operation and it only comes out of the display cabinet once every five | :16:18. | :16:27.
years. Let's go to Edinburgh Castle who is getting a very rare close up. | :16:27. | :16:32.
Aydin you will agree that his is just the sort of item that every | :16:32. | :16:35.
young girl would love in her dressing up collection. This is the | :16:35. | :16:42.
real deal, made for James the 5th in 15 for two. It has been | :16:42. | :16:46.
intricate leak and carefully cleaned by Richard, the head of | :16:46. | :16:51.
connections here at Historic Scotland. It is incredible here to | :16:51. | :16:56.
think of the famous heads that have worn this ground. It is wonderful. | :16:56. | :17:00.
Mary Queen of Scots. She was only nine months old when she was | :17:00. | :17:05.
crowned but maybe her hand touched it. And Charles II was the last | :17:05. | :17:08.
King of Scots to be crowned with this. It is beautiful to look at. | :17:08. | :17:14.
Tell me about the decorations. has oriental poles, these great big | :17:14. | :17:19.
poles on the top. Scottish freshwater pearls, the little ones | :17:19. | :17:24.
on the top of his cross. This golden Orb with the blue a mammal | :17:24. | :17:31.
and the little gold stars was bought by James in a shopping trip | :17:31. | :17:36.
to Paris in 1537. Perhaps one of the interesting things is that | :17:36. | :17:42.
after the Union of opponents in -- this ground was placed away any to | :17:42. | :17:47.
be discovered by Sir Walter's got 100 years later. But on Friday it | :17:47. | :17:51.
will be carried in procession down from Edinburgh council to Scottish | :17:52. | :17:54.
Parliament and it will replaced in front of Queen Elizabeth as she | :17:54. | :17:59.
carries out her official duties opening Parliament. | :17:59. | :18:03.
Sport now and the Royal thing continues. | :18:03. | :18:07.
The Duke and Duchess of Strathearn watched Andy Murray as he got | :18:07. | :18:10.
through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after a straight-sets win | :18:10. | :18:18.
over Richard Gasquet. He beat him 7-6, 6-3, 6-2. Next for Murray, | :18:18. | :18:23.
Spain's Feliciano Lopez. Andy Murray has his fans. They are | :18:23. | :18:27.
certainly onside. Even the future king was cheering him on. There was | :18:27. | :18:31.
not much to separate the players in the opening set. The rally was at | :18:31. | :18:41.
:18:41. | :18:42. | ||
times long and exciting. But both men were prone to errors. But | :18:42. | :18:48.
Murray recovered from that and took his first set. He won the tie-break | :18:48. | :18:54.
convincingly. Beat Scott was still struggling at times, though, | :18:54. | :18:59.
missing a chance to break Gasquet's serve only in the second set. This | :18:59. | :19:08.
frustration was clear. Eventually, Murray brief found his form. -- | :19:08. | :19:13.
found his form again. He brought to the Frenchman and won his next game | :19:13. | :19:20.
to win the second set 6-3. Losing the first two sets seemed to affect | :19:20. | :19:24.
men. In contrast, the British number one was getting into his | :19:24. | :19:30.
stride. When his opponent did put his shot away here, marron took | :19:30. | :19:38.
advantage. He went 3-2 up. Murray was now in complete control. He won | :19:38. | :19:43.
it again. So no Barry out for marine, much to the delight of Kate | :19:43. | :19:48.
and William. I should have said the Earl and | :19:48. | :19:54.
Countess of Strathearn, of course. Our reporter is at Wimbledon | :19:54. | :20:02.
basking in the sun. Whatever you want to call the | :20:02. | :20:04.
royals, Andy Murray royally entertained them in the royal box. | :20:04. | :20:09.
It was a really good performance. Richard Gasquet, a former top ten | :20:09. | :20:14.
player. He had not lost a set so far this Wimbledon. He lost three | :20:15. | :20:17.
there in Centre Court as Andy Murray was in top form and Top gear. | :20:18. | :20:21.
He was particularly pleased when he came off court that he managed to | :20:22. | :20:28.
get off to a good start. He does not normally win the first set. | :20:28. | :20:32.
was important because conditions were very warm today so if you can | :20:32. | :20:37.
get on top of your opponent early and I managed to get a break in the | :20:37. | :20:41.
second set, did not give up too many break-point opportunities. | :20:41. | :20:46.
Andy Murray is safely through to the quarter-finals on Wednesday, | :20:46. | :20:51.
where he will play Feliciano Lopez of Spain. The good news, Andy | :20:51. | :20:55.
Murray has never lost to him the four times they have played before. | :20:55. | :21:00.
He won two comfortably last year. Jamie Murray, big brother, went | :21:00. | :21:03.
through as well and Colin Fleming is through to the third round in | :21:03. | :21:07.
the doubles for the first time in his career. | :21:07. | :21:10.
Back to work at Rangers today with a new man in charge of football | :21:10. | :21:15.
matters. Ally McCoist has warned other managers he will not welcome | :21:15. | :21:20.
any interest in his current players. He also vowed to add to his squad | :21:20. | :21:24.
as soon as possible. First day in a new job is never | :21:24. | :21:27.
easy but the first task of the day was posing for photographs | :21:27. | :21:34.
alongside the new chief executive. Then, the serious work began. | :21:34. | :21:37.
some think I have always been very excited about and I am looking | :21:37. | :21:44.
forward to the challenges ahead. I am aware it will be a bumpy ride. | :21:44. | :21:47.
Priority number one is adding to the current squad. New faces will | :21:47. | :21:52.
be coming but one old base could also be coming. Carlos Cuellar is | :21:53. | :22:00.
very high in the list. He is a player that we would certainly like | :22:01. | :22:08.
to see come back. There are a lot of things, or water under the | :22:08. | :22:12.
bridge. He learned his trade alongside the most successful | :22:13. | :22:17.
Rangers manager of the modern era. Although he is keen to praise his | :22:17. | :22:24.
former boss, macaws will be his own man. I do not care what anyone says. | :22:24. | :22:30.
The most important thing is that your team wins. So hopefully I will | :22:30. | :22:34.
have a winning team and I can discuss tactics afterwards. So he's | :22:34. | :22:38.
ready for the task in hand but when asked if he will meet anti-ageing | :22:38. | :22:43.
cream to alleviate the stress of the drop... Not just yet. Thanks | :22:43. | :22:52.
for reminding me. He might just needed! | :22:52. | :22:55.

twist. For the first time in a decade, they are performing under | :23:29. | :23:35.

years they deserved a roof. Establishing an outdoor Shakespeare | :23:54. | :23:57.
festival in Scotland was always going to be a challenge and the | :23:57. | :24:01.
company has had to battle hard for funding as well as against the | :24:01. | :24:05.
elements, but for many of the cast who return year after year, that is | :24:05. | :24:11.
part of the attraction. Keeping it going when there is a potential | :24:11. | :24:20.

Quite cool for this time of year. Into tomorrow, it will be a fine, | :25:52. | :25:57.

because it will be dry for many of us and some sunshine once again. | :27:01. | :27:06.
